To keep smart gadgets from interrupting work, rest, or sleep, first identify which apps send the alerts, turn off notifications that can wait, and schedule a quiet mode with explicit exceptions for calls, reminders, and important smart-home alerts. Then test the setup: Focus and Do Not Disturb settings vary by device, app, and operating-system version.
Find the alerts that are breaking your routine
For a day or two, notice which notifications interrupt an activity and whether you actually need to act on them right away. On Android, Digital Wellbeing can show screen time, how often apps are opened, and notification counts by app, helping you spot likely sources. Start with the alerts that can wait: promotional messages, social updates, news, and routine status notifications. Turn them off in the relevant app or device notification settings, while keeping genuinely time-sensitive alerts available. Reducing notifications at their source means you do not have to rely on a quiet mode to sort every alert correctly.
Schedule quiet periods and choose exceptions
Use a built-in Focus, Do Not Disturb, or equivalent mode for predictable periods such as focused work and sleep. Choose realistic start and end times, and adjust the schedule when your routine changes. Before relying on the mode, review its allowed people, apps, calls, and reminders; do not assume its default exceptions match what you need.

Android
Android Digital Wellbeing includes Focus mode, which pauses selected apps and their notifications, and Bedtime mode, which can be scheduled. Google describes Focus mode this way: “When Focus mode is on, you can’t use these apps and won’t get notifications from them.” Android Modes, including Do Not Disturb, provide additional controls for when and how notifications arrive. Menu labels and available steps vary by device, and Google says some instructions for Modes apply only to Android 14 or later. Check your phone’s settings if the paths or labels differ. iPhone
In Settings, open Focus and choose the Focus you use, such as Do Not Disturb. Review which people and apps are allowed, and customize the screens associated with that Focus if useful. If you use the same Focus across devices, check that its behavior on each one suits your routine. Apple’s iPhone Focus guide describes these controls.

Windows
Windows Do Not Disturb can be scheduled for chosen times or activities. You can also set priority notifications for calls, reminders, and selected apps, so you can quiet less important alerts without silencing everything you have chosen to keep. If you depend on notifications from a camera, doorbell, alarm, or other smart-home app, check that each alert you care about still arrives while your quiet mode is active. A user discussion in r/smarthome describes sleep or Do Not Disturb settings suppressing smart-home app alerts. That is an anecdotal report, not evidence that every device or app behaves that way, so test your own setup rather than assuming either outcome.

Choose a safe, practical way to trigger an expected notification, such as a test alert in the app if it offers one. Confirm that it reaches the device you expect during the quiet period. If it does not, adjust the app’s notification settings or the mode’s allowed apps and exceptions, then test again.

After trying the schedule for several days, check whether it reduced interruptions without blocking anything you needed. If an important alert was missed, revise its exception or change the schedule rather than abandoning all notification controls. Recheck after changing phones, apps, or operating-system settings, since the available controls and labels are platform- and version-specific.
