How to Compare Technology-Sector ETFs by Fees, Holdings, and Performance

The right way to compare technology-sector ETFs is to compare like with like: the index each fund follows, the same expense-ratio measure, current holdings and concentration, and NAV total returns over identical periods. A low fee alone does not make one fund better. For example, XLK and VGT both provide U.S. technology exposure, yet they follow different indexes and represent different opportunity sets.

The practical process below shows what to collect, how to normalize it, and how to interpret the differences without mixing dates, return definitions, or risk levels.

What a “technology ETF” actually represents

“Technology ETF” is a category label, not a standard portfolio specification. Each fund’s index provider decides which industries qualify, whether companies outside the information-technology sector are included, how large a company must be to enter the index, and how constituent weights are calculated.

XLK seeks to track the Technology Select Sector Index. Its objective, as stated in the 2025 SEC summary prospectus, is to provide investment results that, before expenses, correspond generally to the price and yield performance of publicly traded equity securities of companies in that index. The index is a large-cap technology slice of the S&P 500.

VGT seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index. That benchmark covers a broader investable-market universe than an S&P 500 sector slice and can include large-, mid- and small-cap companies. The different rules can lead to different holdings, weights, volatility and returns even when both funds are described as technology ETFs.

Always read the current prospectus or index methodology before comparing two funds. A company may be classified as information technology by one methodology and placed in another sector, or excluded entirely, by another.

Step 1: Confirm the index and sector definition

Read the fund objective

Start with the objective, not the ticker symbol. Record the exact benchmark name, whether the fund uses full replication or sampling, and how often the index rebalances. The benchmark determines what “technology” means in that product.

Check eligibility and exclusions

Review the methodology for industry classification, minimum market capitalization, liquidity screens, foreign-listing rules and diversification limits. The 25/50 designation in VGT’s benchmark refers to diversification constraints that limit the weight of large constituents at scheduled rebalances; it does not mean the fund holds only 25 or 50 stocks.

Identify sector boundary effects

Some businesses that consumers regard as technology may be classified elsewhere. Payment networks, internet retailers, communication platforms and conglomerates can fall outside a particular technology index. Conversely, a sector index may include companies whose revenue mix is not obvious from the name. Comparing index rules explains these differences better than comparing labels.

Step 2: Normalize fees instead of chasing the smallest number

Use the same fee definition and date

State Street Global Advisors lists XLK’s gross expense ratio at 0.08% in 2026. Vanguard lists VGT’s expense ratio at 0.09% in 2025. These figures are separated by one basis point, or 0.01 percentage point, and come from different issuer dates. Confirm the current figures before trading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Gross” means the stated operating expenses before any contractual waiver or reimbursement. If one issuer reports a net expense ratio and another reports a gross ratio, the numbers are not directly comparable. Record waivers, their expiration dates and any acquired-fund fees when the prospectus lists them.

Translate the ratio into dollars

At a constant $10,000 balance, a 0.08% annual expense ratio represents approximately $8 in operating expenses and 0.09% represents approximately $9, before the effects of changing assets, compounding and portfolio performance. The fund does not normally send you a separate bill; expenses are deducted from net assets and reflected in NAV.

That one-dollar illustration is not a forecast of your account cost. Your average balance, deposits, withdrawals and the fund’s daily NAV determine the actual amount. Trading commissions, bid-ask spread and tax costs can exceed a one-basis-point fee difference.

Evaluate fee-related trade-offs

  • Compare the expense ratio with tracking difference: a fund can have a low stated fee but lag its index more than expected because of transaction costs, sampling, withholding taxes or cash drag.
  • Include the spread paid when buying or selling. A liquid fund with a slightly higher expense ratio can be cheaper to implement than a thinly traded alternative.
  • Check whether securities lending revenue offsets part of operating expenses and how the issuer reports that effect.

Step 3: Inspect holdings breadth and concentration

Look beyond the number of securities

A fund can own hundreds of securities while the largest few determine most of the result. Review the complete holdings file, the weight of the top 10 and top 25 positions, and the percentage in the smallest holdings. Also note whether the index is equal-weighted, float-cap weighted or subject to explicit caps.

Broadcom 4.5%
Oracle 2.4%
Palantir 2.0%
Cisco 1.4%
AMD 1.3%
IBM 1.3%
Salesforce 1.1%

Those ten positions represented 57.9% of net assets in that snapshot. The percentage is a dated observation, not a permanent portfolio rule; market movements and rebalancing change it. A high top-ten share means company-specific events, valuation changes or an industry cycle can dominate the ETF’s return.

Measure overlap with your other funds

Concentration is not limited to one ETF. If a retirement account already owns a broad U.S. index fund, compare its technology weights with the sector ETF’s holdings. Adding a technology fund may increase exposure to the same mega-cap companies rather than diversify it. Use look-through weights for the entire portfolio, not just the ETF’s security count.

Step 4: Compare market-cap mix and sector breadth

Record the percentage in large-, mid- and small-cap companies from each fund’s current fact sheet. XLK’s S&P 500 sector construction makes it predominantly large-cap. VGT’s MSCI investable-market benchmark reaches more of the U.S. technology company universe, so its size mix can include meaningful mid- and small-cap exposure.

Size exposure affects the way a fund behaves. Large-cap companies may have more established revenue, deeper liquidity and greater representation in broad-market indexes. Smaller companies can add growth potential but often have wider spreads, less predictable earnings and larger drawdowns. Neither mix is inherently superior; it answers a different portfolio need.

Also compare subsector weights such as semiconductors, software, hardware, systems and services. Two funds can have similar top holdings but different exposure to less prominent subsectors. Because weights change, save the fact-sheet date beside every percentage in your worksheet.

Step 5: Compare performance on identical terms

Use NAV total returns first

For a fair fund-to-fund comparison, use total returns calculated from NAV for the same one-, three-, five- and ten-year periods ending on the same date. Total return should include reinvested distributions. Do not compare one fund’s calendar-year return with another fund’s trailing return.

State Street notes that ETF shares trade at market prices that can differ from NAV. A market-price return reflects what investors could have received in exchange trading; a NAV return reflects the portfolio’s per-share value. Mixing the two can create an apparent advantage that is actually a premium, discount or timing difference.

Annualize multi-year returns

Convert cumulative returns to annualized returns with the formula (ending value / starting value)^(1 / years) - 1. For example, a five-year period must be expressed as a five-year compound annual growth rate, not divided by five. Use the same day-count convention and distribution treatment for both funds.

Add risk statistics

  • Volatility: annualized standard deviation of periodic total returns, calculated over the same observation window.
  • Maximum drawdown: the largest peak-to-trough decline in the selected period, with the recovery time noted where available.
  • Downside capture: how the ETF behaved during broad-market or technology-sector declines, if the data source provides it.
  • Tracking difference: the fund’s return minus the benchmark’s return over the same period. A negative result larger than the stated expense ratio deserves investigation.

Past performance describes what happened under a particular valuation, interest-rate and earnings environment. It does not predict future results. A recent lead may reflect a temporary concentration in a fast-rising subsector rather than a durable advantage.

Step 6: Account for trading and implementation

Bid-ask spread

The spread is the difference between the best displayed buy and sell prices. Treat it as an immediate implementation cost: a $100.00 offer and a $99.98 bid imply a two-cent spread before commissions. Check the typical spread during normal market hours, not only the quote at a quiet moment. Spreads can widen near the open, close and during market stress.

Assets and trading volume

Assets under management and average daily volume are useful liquidity indicators, but neither guarantees a good execution price. An ETF holding highly liquid underlying stocks can trade efficiently even when its own volume is modest, while a high-volume fund can still experience volatility. Use limit orders when the spread or underlying holdings are less liquid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Premiums, discounts and creation-redemption mechanics

Compare the ETF’s market price with NAV. Persistent premiums or discounts can signal underlying-market constraints, foreign-market time zones or temporary demand imbalances. They also explain why a market-price return may differ from the NAV return shown in the issuer’s performance table.

Tracking quality

Review the annual tracking difference and the reasons given for deviations. Index rebalances, corporate actions, cash holdings, transaction costs, sampling and securities-lending results can all affect realized tracking. A small fee advantage is less meaningful if implementation consistently produces a larger lag.

Step 7: Include taxes in the comparison

Tax results depend on your country, account type, holding period and personal tax bracket, so a fund’s pretax ranking is not a complete after-tax ranking. In a taxable U.S. account, examine the history and composition of capital-gains distributions, ordinary income and qualified-dividend distributions. In a tax-advantaged account, those immediate distribution differences may matter less, although withdrawal rules still apply.

ETFs often use in-kind creation and redemption transactions that can reduce the need to sell appreciated securities inside the portfolio, but this is not a promise that a fund will never distribute capital gains. Check each fund’s annual tax documents and distribution calendar. Do not assume that two funds with similar holdings create identical tax bills; turnover, rebalancing and the timing of sales can differ.

How XLK and VGT differ in a practical decision

If your priority is… What to examine Relevant distinction
A narrowly defined large-cap technology slice Index eligibility, S&P 500 membership and subsector weights XLK follows the Technology Select Sector Index, a sector slice of the S&P 500.
Broader U.S. information-technology coverage Mid- and small-cap weights, security count and concentration VGT follows an MSCI investable-market information-technology index.
The lowest stated operating cost Same-date gross or net expense ratio The cited figures are 0.08% for XLK and 0.09% for VGT, only a 0.01-point difference.
Less dependence on a few companies Top-10 and top-25 weights, plus overlap with your other funds VGT’s top ten totaled 57.9% in the September 30, 2025 fact sheet; obtain the current XLK figure before deciding.
Evidence of superior execution Same-period NAV tracking difference, spread and liquidity Compare realized implementation, not just the prospectus fee.

This is a framework, not a recommendation. The better choice depends on whether you want a concentrated large-cap sector allocation or a broader information-technology universe and how either position fits your existing portfolio.

A repeatable worksheet and review process

  1. Set the as-of date. Use issuer documents published as close as possible to the date of your decision, and write that date beside every observation.
  2. Copy the benchmark objective. Record the exact index, eligible market, classification standard, weighting limits and rebalance schedule.
  3. Normalize fees. Label each ratio gross or net, note waivers, and convert the percentage into an approximate annual dollar cost for your expected average balance.
  4. Download holdings. Capture the complete list, top-10 and top-25 percentages, sector or subsector weights, and large-, mid- and small-cap allocations.
  5. Calculate overlap. Compare the ETF’s largest positions with your other funds so you know your portfolio-level exposure.
  6. Build a matched return table. Use NAV total returns for one, three, five and ten years with one common ending date. Add annualized return, volatility, maximum drawdown and tracking difference.
  7. Check implementation. Observe normal bid-ask spreads, average volume, assets, premiums or discounts and the liquidity of the underlying holdings.
  8. Review taxes. For taxable accounts, inspect prior distributions and expected turnover; for tax-advantaged accounts, consider the account’s withdrawal rules.
  9. Write the decision rule. State in one sentence what would make you choose the fund: broader coverage, lower total implementation cost, lower concentration or a specific portfolio role.
  10. Schedule a refresh. Recheck fees, holdings, concentration, index documents and tracking data after major rebalances or at least annually.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Ranking by ticker or name: replace the label with the actual index methodology.
  • Comparing stale fees: put the issuer and publication year next to every expense ratio.
  • Mixing gross and net ratios: use one definition or explain the adjustment.
  • Assuming more holdings means diversification: inspect the percentage held by the largest positions.
  • Using market-price returns for one fund and NAV returns for another: select one return basis for both.
  • Comparing different end dates: align the final trading day and distribution treatment.
  • Treating recent outperformance as a forecast: pair returns with volatility, drawdown and concentration data.
  • Ignoring portfolio overlap: measure exposure across all accounts, not just inside the ETF.
  • Neglecting trading costs: include spread, commissions where applicable, premium or discount and likely order size.
  • Forgetting sector risk: a technology allocation can fall sharply when the sector’s valuations, earnings expectations or regulation change.

Why sector-ETF risk can exceed broad-market risk

Vanguard’s 2025 fund disclosure states: “Sector ETF products are subject to sector risks and non-diversification risks, which may result in performance fluctuations that are more extreme than fluctuations in the overall stock market.” That warning applies even when an ETF owns many securities, because all of them share a sector exposure and the largest positions may carry substantial weights.

Before buying, decide how much of your total portfolio can be exposed to one sector, one industry group or a handful of companies. Use the ETF’s drawdown history as a stress reference, not as a promise about the next decline. A broad-market holding, cash reserve and other asset classes may play a different stabilizing role than a second technology ETF with overlapping constituents.

Bottom line for comparing technology ETFs

Compare the index first, then normalize the fee, holdings, concentration, market-cap mix, matched NAV returns and implementation costs. The cited XLK and VGT expense ratios differ by only 0.01 percentage point, while their index scopes and portfolio construction can differ much more. VGT’s 57.9% top-ten concentration in the September 30, 2025 snapshot shows why security weights matter more than a simple holdings count. A disciplined, same-date worksheet will reveal whether a fund’s apparent advantage comes from genuine exposure and execution or from an unfair comparison.
