How to Compare Smartphone Battery Life Beyond Battery Capacity

Compare phones by measured runtime on the tasks you use, under the same test method. Battery capacity is useful context, but not a standalone prediction of how long a phone lasts.

To compare smartphone battery life, compare measured runtime on the same kinds of tasks and under the same test method—not just the battery’s advertised mAh. Capacity is one factor; workload, screen settings, network conditions, software, and hardware efficiency also affect how long a phone lasts.

Start with the tasks you actually do

A phone’s runtime can vary across calls, web browsing, video streaming, gaming, camera use, and idle time. A model that lasts longer during video playback may not lead in gaming or calls. Choose results that match your routine: compare video tests if you stream often, gaming tests if you play demanding games, or a combined score for a varied mix.

Combined scores are useful for broad comparisons, but their assumed activity mix matters. Check the individual results too: an aggregate can hide a weak workload that is important to you.

Compare results made with the same method

Test publishers use different brightness levels, tasks, networks, and calculations. Their runtime figures are not automatically interchangeable. For a fair ranking, compare phones tested by the same publisher using the same protocol. Treat comparisons across publishers as approximate unless their methods are demonstrably aligned.

GSMArena Battery Life Test 2.0

GSMArena introduced Battery Life Test 2.0 in November 2023. It measures calls over 4G/VoLTE, interactive web browsing, YouTube video streaming, and a repeated 3D game, then combines them into an adjustable Active Use Score. The default mix gives slightly more weight to web and video, and the score estimates continuous active use rather than including idle periods. Its methodology specifies 200-nit brightness for screen-on tests, Wi-Fi connected, airplane mode enabled, Bluetooth off, location services on, and volume at 15%; the call test uses a 4G network. See GSMArena’s Battery Life Test 2.0 methodology and its announcement of the change from the former Endurance Rating.

Android Authority battery testing

Android Authority describes automated tests for web browsing, video playback, camera capture, video recording, video calls, and graphics-benchmark data. Its method calibrates displays to 300 nits, drains 7% of the battery per task, and extrapolates maximum hours from the result. That is a different protocol from GSMArena’s; compare each publisher’s figures within its own method rather than treating their runtimes as direct equivalents. Details are in Android Authority’s battery-life testing methodology.

Do not mix old and new score generations

GSMArena’s former Endurance Rating and Battery Life Test 2.0’s Active Use Score use different assumptions. The newer score excludes standby, so an old rating and a newer score are not like-for-like. GSMArena explains the transition in its Battery Life Test 2.0 announcement.

Read the protocol before trusting a runtime figure

Brightness, network environment, background processes, ambient temperature and light, refresh-rate settings, and the chosen task mix can all change results. Controlled tests are most useful as comparisons between phones tested under the same conditions, not as promises of your exact screen-on time or number of days.

GSMArena notes that people may not reproduce its runtimes at home because network conditions, background processes, ambient temperature, and available light affect battery life. See its methodology article for the test conditions.

Use mAh as context, not a runtime forecast

Battery capacity helps explain a result, but it does not tell you how efficiently a phone uses energy. Hardware and software both influence efficiency, so a larger mAh figure does not by itself establish which phone will last longer. The IEA 4E EDNA mobile-device study discusses normalizing endurance by battery capacity as one contextual way to consider efficiency; endurance per mAh is not a complete measure of phone quality or a substitute for workload-specific runtime. See the IEA 4E EDNA mobile-device study.

Make a practical shortlist

  1. Pick the workloads. Decide whether calls, browsing, video, gaming, or a mixed day best represents your use.
  2. Choose one test publisher. Compare phones measured with the same method; avoid treating different publishers’ figures as exact equivalents.
  3. Check the score’s assumptions. Look at brightness, network and device settings, activity weighting, and whether standby is included.
  4. Inspect the component results. Make sure the phone does not have a weakness in a task you rely on.
  5. Then consider capacity. Use mAh to add context to measured runtime, not to predict runtime on its own.
  6. Allow for real-world variation. Your settings, reception, background activity, and activity pattern may differ from the lab’s.

Why your own phone may drain faster

Personal runtime is useful for diagnosing your phone, but it is not a controlled way to rank different models. Apple identifies high brightness, background activity, weak or absent mobile coverage, app behavior, connectivity, and battery capacity as factors that affect battery life. Google likewise recommends reducing brightness, limiting apps with high battery use, and using Battery Saver; navigation, tethering, streaming, GPS, graphics-heavy games, and heat can also increase drain. Guidance and settings vary by device and software version. See Apple’s iPhone battery guidance and Google’s Android battery-saving guidance.

  • Check which apps and activities are using the most power.
  • Reduce brightness or use an available battery-saving mode when runtime matters more than some features.
  • Consider whether weak cellular coverage or power-intensive use explains a short day.
  • Use battery-health information, where available, to distinguish heavy current use from a battery that has lost capacity.
