Choose an HDD by matching its capacity, workload rating, interface, format and cooling needs to the exact NAS, server or storage system it will run in. Then build backups as separate, recoverable copies—not as another partition or a redundant array—and test that you can restore them.
Start with the data you need to keep and recover
Estimate today’s data, expected growth and retention period before comparing drive capacities. Include snapshots and version history, spare capacity, and the space consumed by your redundancy scheme. A drive’s advertised capacity is raw capacity: the space available to store files will be lower after RAID or erasure-coding overhead, filesystem metadata, hot spares and reserved free space.

Match the drive to the work. A mostly sequential backup or archive workload differs from random-access applications, sustained multi-user service or a mixed workload. Seagate lists dense RAID or erasure-coded storage, enterprise backup and restore, distributed file systems, high-bay-count NAS and archiving among Exos applications; that range of uses does not mean every Exos model suits every system or workload. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify compatibility for the exact drive model
Do this before choosing on price per terabyte. Drives with the same capacity are not necessarily interchangeable. Check the precise model against the storage system’s supported capacity, interface, sector format, recording technology, controller and firmware, backplane, operating system and enclosure cooling. Also check any manufacturer qualification list and the relevant model datasheet; product families can include models with different specifications.
#1 Best Overall

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For example, Seagate’s support listing includes the Exos 32TB model ST32000NM004K and states a five-year limited warranty. Treat it as an example to investigate, not a universal recommendation: availability, regional warranty coverage and compatibility with a particular NAS or controller need to be confirmed. Compare total cost, not just raw capacity
Calculate cost per usable terabyte after redundancy and reserves, and consider how many supported bays are needed. A higher-capacity drive may reduce bay, rack-space and enclosure needs, but purchase price is only part of deployment cost. Include power, cooling, controller or enclosure requirements, support, replacement logistics and the time required to restore data.

Seagate’s 2025 Exos datasheet describes capacity up to 32TB in a 3.5-inch form factor and presents high areal density as a way to increase capacity within that footprint. These are manufacturer statements about the family, not proof that every model or system configuration supports 32TB. Compare them with your system’s measured constraints and actual quotes. Workload ratings, warranty terms, field statistics and a replacement plan answer different questions. None guarantees how long a particular drive will last. In particular, MTBF is a statistical rating, not a promised service life for an individual unit.

Western Digital lists its Ultrastar DC HC690 at up to 32TB, with a 550TB/year workload rating, up to 2.5 million hours MTBF and a five-year limited warranty. Independent fleet data can add operational context, but it is not a forecast for your deployment. Backblaze reported a 1.36% annualized failure rate for 2025 across 344,196 qualifying drives and 30 models in its monitored fleet. Its population, operating practices and model mix affect the result, so do not apply the fleet-wide number as the expected failure rate for a specific drive in a different environment. Backblaze’s separate Q1 2025 report said its overall lifetime AFR was 1.31% at that point. This is a lifetime measure from an earlier report, not the 2025 annual rate. Backblaze Drive Stats for Q1 2025
Build backups around recovery, not just drive count
RAID or erasure coding can help keep a storage service available when a drive fails, but an array is not a separate backup. A complete design keeps backup copies distinct from primary data and considers the failure domains that could affect both, such as accidental deletion, corruption, malware, equipment damage or site loss.

For removable HDD backups, CISA advises disconnecting the media after backup and physically securing it. A drive that stays connected and writable remains exposed to events that affect the primary system; rolling backups can also carry corruption or malware forward. CISA’s guidance discusses the physical-control and security benefits of removable media. CISA ransomware guide
An offsite copy can address a different failure domain. Backblaze describes a 3-2-1 arrangement using an external drive and online backup as an example. Backblaze sells backup and storage products, so treat that as its explanation of the approach rather than an independent endorsement of a particular service. Backblaze explanation of the 3-2-1 backup strategy
Set recovery-point and recovery-time objectives: how much recent work you can afford to lose and how long restoration may take. Document the recovery steps, protect credentials and encryption keys, monitor backup jobs and periodically test a restore. A backup is only useful if you can access it and recover the data you need.
Quick Recap
Use this selection checklist
- Size for current data, growth, retention, versioning, redundancy and reserved free space.
- Classify the workload as archive or backup, random access, sustained multi-user service or mixed use.
- Confirm exact-model support for capacity, interface, sector format, recording method, controller, firmware, operating system and cooling.
- Compare cost per usable terabyte and supported bay, including power, cooling, support and restoration costs.
- Use model-specific specifications and appropriately qualified field data; plan monitoring and replacements rather than assuming reliability ratings prevent failure.
- Keep distinct backup copies, use an offsite copy where the risk warrants it, disconnect and secure removable media, and prove restoration works.
