Use n8n to decide when a check runs and what happens next; use a browser runtime to capture the page and a visual-comparison tool to compare that image with a saved baseline. The practical workflow is Schedule Trigger → capture → save image and metadata → compare → notify or review. The example below uses Playwright for capture and comparison, with n8n orchestrating the run.
What n8n does—and what it does not
n8n provides scheduling and workflow coordination. A browser such as Playwright renders the site and takes the screenshot; a visual test compares the new image with a reference image. These are separate responsibilities, even when the browser script is launched by an n8n workflow.

The architecture here is an implementation pattern, not a verified, prebuilt n8n template. You can run the browser script on a machine or container you operate, or arrange for a suitable hosted browser service to perform the capture. Choose based on where you can control the browser environment, store baselines, and access the results.
Build the recurring comparison
1. Create a Playwright screenshot check
Playwright Test can create a reference screenshot on its first run and compare subsequent runs against it. Install Playwright Test in the environment that will run the check, then create a test such as:
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its approved baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {
fullPage: true,
maxDiffPixels: 100,
});
});
Replace the example URL with the page you want to monitor. The viewport, page readiness condition, and allowed pixel difference are choices for your own site, not universal defaults. The first run creates a baseline; subsequent runs compare against it. Playwright documents screenshot matching and its first-run reference behavior at Visual comparisons.
Run the test once to generate the reference image, inspect it, and store it where later runs can access it. Keep that baseline with the test project or in another versioned, backed-up location. Do not let an unreviewed difference silently replace the approved reference.

2. Schedule the check in n8n
- Add a Schedule Trigger node and choose a fixed interval or a custom Cron schedule. Set the intended workflow timezone in the workflow settings; if no workflow timezone is configured, n8n uses the instance timezone. n8n documents America/New York as the default for self-hosted instances; n8n Cloud attempts to detect the owner’s timezone and falls back to GMT. See n8n Schedule Trigger documentation.
- Connect a step that launches the Playwright check in the environment where Playwright and its browser are installed. The exact node or integration depends on your n8n deployment and how you expose that runtime; do not assume a generic n8n instance has a browser or project files available.
- Capture the command’s exit status and output. Treat a failed browser run as a capture or test failure, not as evidence that the page visually changed.
- On a successful comparison, route a detected difference to a notification or human-review step. Preserve the screenshot and run details so the reviewer can inspect what changed.
- Save and publish the workflow. n8n’s Schedule Trigger runs only when the workflow is saved and published.
3. Keep a useful record for each run
For troubleshooting and review, record the target URL, capture time and timezone, browser/runtime details, baseline identifier, test result, and location of the resulting screenshot. Separating capture failures from visual differences avoids alerts that imply a page changed when the browser never produced a valid image.

Keep the rendering environment stable
Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other environmental factors. Playwright’s guidance is direct: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See Playwright visual comparisons. Keep the browser and OS consistent and use the same viewport, fonts, and capture settings for baseline generation and scheduled runs.

Handle changing parts of the page deliberately
Ads, timestamps, personalized content, animations, and rotating modules can create differences unrelated to the change you care about. Prefer stable test data or a predictable capture time where possible. If a region is irrelevant to the check, Playwright’s stylePath option can apply CSS that hides volatile elements during screenshot comparison; use a narrowly scoped rule so a meaningful layout change is not hidden along with noise. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison options.
Choose a tolerance and review baseline changes
maxDiffPixels controls how many differing pixels Playwright permits. Set it deliberately: a larger tolerance may suppress small rendering noise, but can also let a real change pass unnoticed. It is a comparison threshold, not proof that a difference is harmless. When a change is intentional, inspect it and update the reference with --update-snapshots; do not make automatic baseline updates the routine response to every alert. The available controls and update flow are described in Playwright visual comparisons.

Choose where n8n and the browser run
n8n offers Cloud and self-hosted setup choices. The schedule-and-compare pattern can use either, but browser execution, baseline access, and workflow connectivity need to be planned for the deployment you select. The cited setup documentation does not establish that one option is always cheaper, safer, or more reliable than the other; check current terms and operational requirements before choosing. See n8n hosting documentation.
If the browser runs separately from n8n, make the handoff explicit: n8n must be able to start or request the capture, receive its outcome, and access the image or comparison result. Confirm that the chosen runtime can retain or retrieve the baseline between scheduled executions.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The schedule does not run: confirm the workflow is saved and published, then check the workflow timezone and the instance timezone fallback. A timezone mismatch can shift an apparently correct schedule.
- The check reports a failure instead of a diff: inspect the browser command’s exit status and logs, then verify the browser runtime, target URL, and access to the project and baseline. Route capture errors separately from visual-difference alerts.
- Every run reports changes: compare browser/OS versions, headless mode, viewport, fonts, and capture timing with the baseline environment. Investigate animated or personalized regions and hide only irrelevant dynamic content.
- A real change is missed: review whether the tolerance is too permissive or whether CSS used to hide volatile content also masks relevant elements. Re-run with a stricter threshold and inspect the captured image.
- A workflow run failed and needs inspection: n8n documents execution history tools for examining runs and retrying failures, but its execution-history page was unavailable at the cited URL. Check the current n8n interface and documentation for the controls in your edition rather than relying on an assumed menu path. See n8n execution documentation.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request, and its response reports whether the page was clean or why it was not billable. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, and known newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. It also has an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents.
Example using cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details):

Frequently asked questions
Can n8n compare the screenshots by itself?
This workflow uses n8n for scheduling and routing; the Playwright test performs the screenshot comparison against its reference.
Can I compare a full page rather than just the viewport?
Yes. The example enables Playwright’s fullPage screenshot option so the check covers the full page.
