Find which layer timed out before changing a limit: n8n’s overall workflow timeout, an HTTP request, or the browser/screenshot operation may each have separate controls. In n8n, check the failed execution and the workflow’s Settings → Timeout Workflow → Timeout After setting; then inspect the failing node or screenshot service’s own timeout. A larger workflow limit helps only when the workflow is being stopped by that limit—it does not fix a slow or stuck step.
Identify what timed out
Open the failed execution and note the node where it stopped, the exact error, elapsed time, n8n version, whether the instance is Cloud or self-hosted, and how the screenshot is taken. That information distinguishes a workflow-level cutoff from a request or browser failure. The title alone does not identify the node, screenshot implementation, or applicable timeout value.

Timeout controls have different scopes. n8n’s workflow setting governs the execution as a whole. An HTTP Request node or a browser/screenshot tool may have its own request, navigation, or page-load behavior. A reverse proxy or webhook may also have limits, but the n8n settings described here do not establish that those controls share a value.
| What stopped | Where to investigate | What a change affects |
|---|---|---|
| The whole workflow after a duration limit | Workflow Settings; for self-hosted instances, execution timeout environment variables | How long n8n permits the workflow execution to run |
| An HTTP Request node | The node’s request configuration and error; n8n documents Retry on Fail and batching among its options | Request behavior and handling of failures or rate limiting; these options are not themselves a timeout increase |
| A browser or screenshot operation | The specific node or external screenshot service documentation | That tool’s own navigation, page-load, or request behavior |
Do not assume that changing the workflow setting changes an outbound request or browser action’s timeout. The exact screenshot node and error are not specified here, so there is no responsible universal browser-timeout value to prescribe.

Check the workflow timeout in n8n
- Open the workflow in n8n and go to Settings → Timeout Workflow.
- Inspect Timeout After and compare its duration with the elapsed time shown in the failed execution.
- If the execution stopped at that configured duration, decide whether the workflow should reasonably need more time. Increase the limit only when the workflow’s actual work justifies it, then run a representative screenshot execution and inspect the result.
n8n documents a plan-specific maximum for Cloud users, so an account’s available limit depends on its plan. Do not assume a Cloud workflow can use an arbitrary duration.
For self-hosted n8n, check instance limits separately
For self-hosted installations, n8n documents two environment variables: EXECUTIONS_TIMEOUT sets the default workflow timeout in seconds, and EXECUTIONS_TIMEOUT_MAX sets the maximum per-workflow execution time. Review the environment actually used by the running instance, along with the documentation for your deployed n8n version, before changing either value.
| Variable or example | Meaning in n8n’s documentation |
|---|---|
EXECUTIONS_TIMEOUT default: -1 |
The documented default value for the instance’s default workflow timeout; confirm behavior for the version you run. |
EXECUTIONS_TIMEOUT=3600 |
n8n’s example of a one-hour default timeout, in seconds—not a recommendation for every workflow. |
EXECUTIONS_TIMEOUT_MAX=7200 |
n8n’s example of a two-hour per-workflow maximum, in seconds—not a general target. |
These instance-level variables and the workflow editor’s per-workflow setting are separate controls. A workflow-specific choice cannot necessarily exceed the instance maximum, and a suitable instance default does not prove that a particular node has enough time to complete. Their defaults and behavior can vary with version and configuration.
Cancellation may not be immediate
n8n documents different timeout handling by execution mode. For executions in the main process, the soft timeout takes effect after the current node finishes. For executions in their own process, n8n first attempts a soft timeout and then kills the process after waiting one fifth of the configured timeout duration. A timeout therefore does not always mean the current operation is interrupted at that exact instant.

If the failing step is an HTTP Request node
Read the node’s error and inspect its request and response behavior before changing workflow duration. n8n documents Retry on Fail and batching as options relevant to failures or rate-limiting scenarios. Use them only when they match the observed problem: retries do not guarantee that a slow or unresponsive website will recover, and neither option changes the workflow timeout value.
- If the request fails quickly, investigate the returned error and the endpoint’s response rather than assuming the workflow duration is too short.
- If the request is rate-limited, consider whether batching and retry behavior suit the endpoint’s limits.
- If the request appears stuck, check the node’s own request behavior and the service’s documentation; do not infer its timeout from the workflow setting.
If the failing step is a browser or screenshot action
Find the exact screenshot implementation—an n8n node, browser automation integration, or external screenshot API—and consult its documentation for its own navigation, page-load, or request timeout. Those settings are not established by n8n’s workflow timeout documentation. Also check whether the target page is slow, blocked, or waiting on resources that the screenshot tool expects.
If the workflow does not need a locally managed browser, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server that can be called from an n8n HTTP Request step. Its response includes page-verdict and billing headers; the service says bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. This is an alternative implementation, not a setting that changes n8n’s timeout controls.

Call ScreenshotNeo’s API with one GET request. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your access key and, if needed, change the target URL. In n8n, configure an HTTP Request node to make a GET request to the endpoint with the same query parameters, and handle the response as a binary image if you want to save or pass the screenshot on.

n8n Help Center cautions that “A timeout is a safeguard, not a performance fix.” Increasing the limit will not resolve memory pressure, oversized payloads, inefficient queries, or unnecessary processing. Before allowing a workflow to run longer, identify whether it is doing slow or excessive work and whether it is handling more data than necessary.
- Check for large screenshot files or payloads being passed through multiple nodes.
- Look for avoidable processing or inefficient queries around the screenshot step.
- Separate a slow target page or unresponsive external service from a workflow that is simply performing too much work.
Verify the change with a real execution
- Use a representative target page and run the workflow again.
- Inspect the new execution to see whether it completes and which node took the time.
- If it still fails, compare the new error and elapsed time with the original, then investigate the responsible node or service’s own controls.
A timeout is not fixed merely because a larger value was saved; verify that the actual workflow completes successfully.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing “Timeout After” change the screenshot node’s timeout?
No. It controls the overall workflow duration. Check the screenshot node or service documentation for its own timeout controls.
Why did a workflow with a longer timeout still fail?
The failing operation may have its own limit or error, or the workflow may be affected by memory pressure, oversized payloads, inefficient queries, or unnecessary processing.
