A European Union A–E class, an iFixit score out of 10, and France’s earlier 1–10 index measure different things, so they cannot be converted into a reliable shared ranking. For a useful buying decision, check the scorecard’s repair criteria, then look closely at the parts you are most likely to need replaced.
Which repairability scores can you compare?
Start by identifying the system behind each score. A score is an assessment under a particular method, not a universal measure of how easy or inexpensive a phone will be to repair. The systems below use different scales and scopes.

In particular, do not turn an EU letter into a guessed number, or rank it directly against an iFixit or French score. A high result in one system does not establish what the same phone would score under another method.

The methods answer different questions. iFixit focuses on self-repair, while the Joint Research Centre (JRC) method assesses compliance with EU ecodesign requirements and explicitly considers both consumers and professional repairers. Their priority parts, repair agents, weights, repair aspects, and time horizons differ. Both methods consider design, spare parts, and repair information; the JRC approach also considers software updates over time. A gap between scores can therefore reflect different criteria rather than a faulty assessment.

Even scores from the same provider need context. iFixit says its rubric changes as technologies and design trends evolve, and that older scores may not compare directly with scores under later criteria. Compare models assessed under the same version when possible; otherwise, read the versioned scorecards and explain the difference rather than treating the numbers as like-for-like.
How to compare candidate phones step by step
- Confirm the exact model and market. Check the full model name and the country where you will buy and repair it. For a covered phone placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025 onward, begin with its energy label and the linked EPREL model details.
- Match the scoring systems. Compare EU classes with EU classes, or iFixit scores with iFixit scores. Do not translate between scales or combine them into an average.
- Match scorecard versions and dates. For iFixit, note the version linked from each model’s listing. If the versions differ, treat the scores as less directly comparable and inspect the specific criteria behind each result.
- Choose the repairs that matter to you. For many buyers, that means checking the screen, battery, charging port, and back-cover or enclosure. JRC priority parts also include cameras and buttons. For a foldable, consider the hinge and the added screen-repair complexity separately.
- Follow the repair path. Check how the phone opens, whether heat or adhesive is involved, which tools and fasteners are needed, whether another fragile component must be removed first, and how the device is reassembled. A repair that starts easily may still be difficult to complete.
- Verify parts, instructions, and software requirements. Look for manufacturer or endorsed-supplier parts and instructions in your region. Check whether a replacement needs software calibration or parts pairing, and whether the required software access is available. A physically installed part may not complete a functional repair if required software access is unavailable.
- Compare ownership factors outside the repairability score. Check actual local parts and repair prices, availability, software-support period, warranty, battery information, drop resistance, and water or dust protection. No single repairability score settles all of these questions.
What the EU label and rules tell you—and what they do not
The EU energy label keeps repairability separate from other product information. Its repairability letter is not a proxy for battery endurance, resistance to repeated falls, ingress protection, or energy efficiency. Compare those label fields separately if they matter to your purchase.

For covered products, European Commission guidance says batteries must withstand at least 800 charge/discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of their initial capacity. That is a minimum requirement for covered products, not a measured result for a particular phone.
The same guidance describes obligations concerning disassembly and repair, critical spare-parts availability within 5–10 working days and for seven years after the model’s last placement on the EU market, and OS upgrades for at least five years from the end of placement of the last unit. These obligations do not establish that a particular part is in stock today, that a local repairer can obtain it, or that the repair will be affordable.

What current iFixit examples show
iFixit’s 2025 score page illustrates why a headline score is only a starting point. Its Fairphone 6 entry describes adhesive-free screen and battery repairs that take only a few minutes, easy disassembly, modularity, and the availability of Fairphone parts and instructions. Those are iFixit’s assessments of that model, not independent laboratory results.
For the Pixel 10, iFixit says screen repairs are prioritized and that other parts sit beneath back glass that does not require heat to remove. It also describes battery and charging-port repair as easier than on earlier models, notes that adhesive secures many components, and points to Google parts and instructions. These model-specific details can help a buyer understand what a score means in practice; check the live listing and its linked scorecard before relying on them.

iFixit’s 2025 entries for the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro describe Apple parts and instructions alongside complications from multiple screw types and adhesive. Its entries for the Nothing Phone 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 describe different trade-offs, including difficult openings, screen-repair challenges, limited parts or instructions, and foldable complexity. A score comparison is most useful when it leads you to the relevant model entry and repair details, rather than ending at the number.
How to make the final choice
If two phones remain close, compare them on the same-system score and version, the screen and battery repair paths, access to parts and instructions, local repair cost and availability, software support and any parts-pairing restrictions, and separate durability measures such as drop resistance, ingress protection, and battery endurance. Give more weight to the repair you are most likely to need than to a small difference between aggregate scores.
