The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask gives Link 72 in-game hours—three days—before time runs out. You can reset the clock early by playing the Song of Time, returning to the first day at 6:00 a.m. while keeping selected progress. The reset is not a full save of the world: some items and records persist, while many events, resources and dungeon states begin again.
How the three-day countdown works
Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 manual describes a 72-hour countdown. Each day is 24 in-game hours; if all three days pass, the game ends. Nintendo’s 3DS manual describes the same three-day cycle. Nintendo’s Majora’s Mask 3D manual states, “Time flows continuously during the game.”

The countdown does not run during every moment of play. What pauses it depends on the edition: the Nintendo 64 manual says conversations and pressing START stop time. The 3DS manual also identifies certain subscreens, including the Bombers’ Notebook and Item Screen, as pause conditions. Treat those as edition-specific descriptions rather than assuming every pause behavior is identical.

Playing the Song of Time on the Ocarina of Time sends Link back to dawn on the first day, at 6:00 a.m. Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 manual describes the return this way: “When you play the song, Link will pass through a time vortex to return to 6:00 a.m. on the first day.” The song also saves selected progress; it does not preserve every action or resource from the cycle.

This means you do not have to finish the entire adventure in one uninterrupted three-day run. The cycle is a limit on how long the current version of the world continues, not a requirement to complete the whole game before resetting.
What stays and what resets
The manuals describe the same broad distinction: Link’s lasting progress can carry forward, while cycle-specific world state is undone. The Nintendo 64 manual gives a more detailed inventory of what is saved and what is lost:

The 3DS manual summarizes the reset differently: dungeons and events return to their initial status, and rupees and some collected items are lost. Its description supports the general distinction between persistent progress and cycle-specific state, but does not provide the same full saved-versus-unsaved list as the Nintendo 64 manual. Avoid treating every item-level detail in the N64 list as confirmed for 3DS based on that shorter description alone.

Practical way to think about a reset
- Keep moving through the current cycle when you are working on a temporary event, puzzle, or dungeon task.
- Use the Song of Time when you want to restart the clock and preserve selected progress rather than letting the three days expire.
- Check what you are carrying first. The Nintendo 64 manual specifically distinguishes banked rupees from wallet rupees and saved major items from consumable quantities.
- Expect events and dungeon progress to restart. The 3DS manual explicitly says dungeons and events return to their initial status; the N64 manual lists several specific unsaved tasks and dungeon resources.
How the manuals differ by edition
The core rule is consistent across the Nintendo 64 and 3DS manuals: three days pass, and the Song of Time returns Link to the first dawn while preserving some progress. Their pause descriptions and detail about reset consequences are not worded identically. The N64 manual supplies a more extensive list of saved and unsaved items; the 3DS manual names the Bombers’ Notebook and Item Screen among pause conditions and describes lost rupees and some items in broader terms.
