The PS5 Pro is not automatically better in every game. A fair comparison uses the same game update, display, HDR and in-game settings on both consoles, then checks five things: internal resolution and reconstruction, frame-rate behavior, ray tracing, image quality and available modes. Also identify whether the game has a developer-made PS5 Pro Enhanced patch, only benefits from Game Boost, or has no documented Pro-specific upgrade.
Sony says Enhanced features are available only in selected PS5 games and differ by title. The label is therefore a useful filter, not a universal promise of native 4K, 60 frames per second or identical features in every game.

What “PS5 Pro Enhanced” actually means
A PS5 Pro Enhanced game includes a patch or game update made to use the console’s additional graphics capability. The developer chooses which settings to raise: resolution, ray-tracing quality, lighting, texture filtering, foliage density, frame-rate targets or some combination. Two Enhanced games can therefore deliver very different upgrades.
Keep that label separate from PS5 Pro Game Boost. Game Boost is a console-level compatibility feature. Sony says it can stabilize or improve supported PS4 and PS5 games and applies to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. It does not mean the developer created a new Pro rendering mode. A game can benefit from Game Boost without appearing in an Enhanced-games list.

Three support categories to record
| Category | What it means | What you can claim |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro Enhanced patch | The developer supplied a Pro-specific rendering mode or visual update. | Describe the documented mode and its trade-offs. Do not generalize it to other games. |
| Game Boost | The console applies compatibility or performance behavior without a bespoke Pro mode. | Report improvements only when the game or Sony documents them, or label independent measurements as measurements. |
| No documented enhancement | No official Pro-specific change has been identified. | Do not infer a visible upgrade from the hardware specification alone. |
At launch, PlayStation listed more than 50 Enhanced games, including Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Stellar Blade and The Last of Us titles. Sony’s hardware announcement also cited Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Demon’s Souls and Gran Turismo 7 as sample Enhanced games. The catalog and features can change with later patches, so check the current game notes before testing.
Why the Pro can improve a game
Sony’s 2024 hardware figures describe the available headroom: 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering than the current PS5. Sony also says ray tracing can run at more than twice the speed and highlights its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) AI-driven upscaling. These are console capabilities, not guaranteed results for every title.
| Hardware capability reported by Sony | How it can appear in a game | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 67% more GPU compute units | More complex lighting, higher internal resolution or denser effects at a similar frame-rate target. | The developer must allocate the extra performance; unused headroom is not visible. |
| 28% faster memory | More bandwidth for resolution, textures, effects and scene detail. | Benefits depend on the game engine and its memory budget. |
| Up to 45% faster rendering | Higher-quality settings while retaining a performance-oriented target. | “Up to” is a peak platform claim, not a result every game reaches. |
| More than double the ray-tracing speed | Reflections, shadows or global illumination can be added or made more accurate. | Ray tracing may still be limited to selected surfaces, modes or scenes. |
| PSSR | A lower internal render can be reconstructed to a sharper output image. | PSSR is reconstruction, not proof that the game rendered every pixel at native 4K. |
Use a controlled comparison instead of a side-by-side guess
Visual memory is unreliable, and a later game patch can change the result. Follow the same procedure for both consoles.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute1. Lock the test conditions
- Install the same game version and all available updates on the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro. Do not compare a launch build on one console with a patched build on the other.
- Use the same display input, picture preset, HDR setting, resolution output and HDMI mode. Disable automatic picture processing that differs between inputs.
- Match in-game settings: graphics mode, motion blur, film grain, depth of field, field of view, camera distance and any performance or quality toggles.
- Record whether variable refresh rate (VRR) is enabled. Test both consoles with the same VRR state; otherwise a display can conceal frame-rate dips on one system.
- Use the same area, save file and camera route. A busy city scene can expose differences that an empty corridor cannot.
2. Identify the support type before judging the picture
Check the game’s update notes, the in-game graphics menu and the developer’s announcement. Write down “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” “Game Boost” or “no documented enhancement.” This prevents a hardware assumption from being presented as a confirmed feature.
3. Capture the five visual axes
- Resolution and reconstruction: Is the game rendering at a fixed or dynamic internal resolution? Does it use PSSR or another scaler? Is the stated output 4K, or is 4K only the reconstructed display signal?
- Frame rate: What is the target, what range is observed in the same scene, and does VRR hide short dips? A 60-fps target is not the same as a locked 60 fps.
- Ray tracing: Look separately at reflections, shadows and global illumination. An update may improve one category while leaving the others unchanged.
- Image quality: Inspect fine foliage, hair, thin wires, distant geometry, texture filtering, shimmering and motion clarity. Resolution alone does not describe all of these.
- Mode trade-off: Does the Pro combine a fidelity mode with a performance mode, or does it simply raise one setting while keeping the same compromise?
4. Describe what changes and what does not
A useful result states the gain in player terms and names the remaining compromise. For example: “The Pro mode keeps the 60-fps target while rendering at a higher internal resolution and using PSSR, so distant detail is cleaner without switching to the 30-fps fidelity mode.” Do not call that native 4K unless the developer explicitly says the internal render is native 4K.
How to interpret resolution and PSSR
Output resolution is the signal sent to the display; internal resolution is the number of pixels the game actually renders before reconstruction. A game can output a 4K signal while rendering internally at a lower, dynamic resolution. PSSR analyzes the rendered image and reconstructs additional detail. That can improve edges, foliage and distant objects, but it remains an upscaling process.
Naughty Dog gives a concrete example for its PS5 Pro modes: the game renders at 1440p, upscales to 4K with PSSR and targets 60 fps. That wording supports “1440p rendered, 4K reconstructed,” not “native 4K at 60 fps.” When comparing another title, use its developer’s stated numbers rather than borrowing Naughty Dog’s figures.

Reconstruction artifacts can appear as shimmer on foliage, crawling on thin geometry or softness during a fast camera pan. A still screenshot may hide those differences.
How to compare frame rate fairly
Use the same target and scene on both systems. A 30-fps fidelity mode and a 60-fps performance mode answer different questions; comparing one against the other does not establish a Pro advantage. Note whether the frame rate is capped, unlocked or variable, and whether the display’s VRR range masks dips.
If a developer says “60-fps target,” report it as a target. Only call it locked or stable when a documented measurement supports that wording. Sony’s platform material does not provide a universal frame-rate table for every game, so game-specific measured results must be labeled as measurements by the tester who made them.
Ray tracing can be the biggest visible upgrade
The Pro’s additional ray-tracing capability can improve reflections, shadows or global illumination without increasing the nominal output resolution. Compare a window reflection, a wet street, a mirror, contact shadows and indirect light in the same scene. Check whether the effect is present across the whole game or only in a selected mode.

Hogwarts Legacy illustrates this type of upgrade. WB Games Avalanche says its Pro update raises the quality of the Performance and Fidelity modes, uses PSSR on all visual modes and adds ray-traced reflections and shadows. That is a mode-and-effects improvement; it does not establish a universal resolution or frame-rate result for every scene.
Examples of different Pro strategies
Balanced resolution and frame rate: Naughty Dog
Naughty Dog says each supported game receives a Pro-specific enhanced rendering mode that renders at 1440p, upscales to 4K through PSSR and maintains a 60-fps target. The practical comparison is therefore against the standard PS5’s own 60-fps mode: inspect whether the Pro image retains more distant detail and cleaner edges while keeping the same performance goal.
One mode combining two compromises: Insomniac
Insomniac says Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 add a default Performance Pro mode. It combines the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features of Fidelity mode with the 60-fps speed of Performance mode. Verify the exact game menu and update version because this description applies to those named games, not to every Insomniac or PS5 title.
Higher-quality existing modes: Avalanche
Avalanche’s description of Hogwarts Legacy emphasizes crisper, richer, higher-resolution graphics, PSSR in all visual modes and additional ray-traced reflections and shadows. Here the question is not simply “Does it reach 4K?” but “Which settings become better in each mode, and what frame-rate target remains?”

| Question | Standard PS5 baseline | PS5 Pro comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Same frame-rate target | Record image quality and stability at the chosen 30- or 60-fps mode. | Check whether the Pro delivers sharper reconstruction, more detail or fewer dips at that same target. |
| Similar visual settings | Use the closest matching Performance or Fidelity mode. | Check whether the Pro raises resolution, effects or scene detail without changing the target. |
| Ray tracing | Record which reflections, shadows or lighting effects are enabled. | Check the same surfaces and whether the effect is broader or more accurate. |
| Display requirement | A 4K display helps reveal resolution differences; a 60-Hz screen still shows 30-versus-60-fps differences. | A 120-Hz display is needed to see a 120-Hz mode at its full refresh rate. |
| Patch dependency | Runs the standard PS5 build and its available modes. | Major gains usually require a developer patch; Game Boost is a separate case. |
| Total cost | Existing console and display may be sufficient. | PS5 Pro launched at a $699.99 USD MSRP in 2024; add the cost of a suitable display and, for physical-media owners, the optional PS5 Pro-compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. |
The $699.99 figure is the launch MSRP reported by Sony in 2024, not a current retailer price. Verify current console, display and disc-drive pricing before making a purchase decision.
Does a 120Hz TV make a difference?
Not for every enhancement. A 60Hz display can still show sharper reconstruction, improved ray-traced reflections, better shadows and the perceptual difference between 30 and 60 fps. A 120Hz-capable display matters when a game offers a 120Hz or high-frame-rate mode; without it, the screen cannot present that mode at its full refresh rate.
Sony describes 60Hz and 120Hz output in relation to the connected TV. For resolution and ray-tracing comparisons, use a 4K display. Match the TV’s HDMI input, enhanced-format setting, HDR and VRR configuration on both consoles so the display is not an uncontrolled variable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you need for a reliable home test
- The same digital or disc game license and identical update version on both consoles.
- A 4K display for examining reconstructed detail and ray-tracing effects.
- A 120Hz-capable display only if the title offers a 120Hz or high-frame-rate mode you want to evaluate.
- The same HDMI cable class, input, HDR format, VRR state and TV picture preset.
- A way to record observations or video, with the scene, mode and console written in each note.
For physical-media owners, Sony offers a PS5 Pro-compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive as an optional accessory. Whether it is worthwhile depends on how much of your library is on disc; current availability and pricing should be checked separately.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Calling reconstructed 4K “native 4K”
Problem: The console outputs a 4K signal, but the game renders internally at a lower or dynamic resolution.
Fix: State the internal render and reconstruction method when the developer provides them. Use “4K output” or “4K reconstructed with PSSR,” not “native 4K,” unless native rendering is documented.
Assuming every Enhanced game has the same upgrade
Problem: The Enhanced badge is treated as a fixed specification.
Fix: List the title’s actual mode, target, effects and patch notes. Sony explicitly says features vary by game.

Mixing Game Boost with an Enhanced patch
Problem: A compatibility improvement is presented as a developer-created Pro mode.
Fix: Label Game Boost separately and explain whether a bespoke patch exists.
Comparing different game builds
Problem: One console runs an old build and the other has a later visual update.
Fix: Update both systems, record the build or patch number and repeat the test after any major update.
Letting VRR hide an instability difference
Problem: VRR makes both versions look smooth even when one fluctuates more.
Fix: Record VRR status and, where possible, observe or measure frame-time behavior rather than relying only on perceived smoothness.
Using a different TV mode for each console
Problem: One HDMI input applies sharpening, HDR or motion processing that the other does not.
Fix: Match input settings and disable extra processing that is not part of the game.

How to decide whether the upgrade matters to you
- Choose the Pro’s advantage when you value image quality at 60 fps: look for a patched mode that combines a higher-quality image with a performance target, such as the modes described by Naughty Dog or Insomniac.
- Prioritize ray tracing when reflections and lighting matter most: inspect whether the specific game adds or improves those effects, as Avalanche reports for Hogwarts Legacy.
- Do not buy for a badge alone: confirm that your frequently played games have documented Pro modes or meaningful Game Boost behavior.
- Budget for the whole setup: the console’s $699.99 USD 2024 launch MSRP is only one component; a 4K display, a 120Hz display for high-frame-rate modes and an optional disc drive can change the total.
- Use your display realistically: a 60Hz 4K TV can reveal many image-quality gains, while 120Hz is necessary for full-refresh 120Hz gameplay.
What Sony’s PSSR claims establish
Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 and PS5 Pro, describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. Sony says it had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 titles on PS5 Pro by 2026. “Effective resolution” describes the reconstructed result; it should not be read as a claim that every one of those games renders natively at 4K.
The practical test is therefore title-specific: identify the internal render, observe reconstruction during motion, and compare the same scene at the same frame-rate target. PSSR can be a major part of the upgrade, but its visible quality depends on the game’s implementation and the version of the upscaling technology included in that update.
Bottom line for a fair verdict
The PS5 Pro’s hardware headroom is substantial, but its value appears selectively through developer decisions. Compare identical builds and settings, separate Enhanced patches from Game Boost, and report resolution, reconstruction, frame rate, ray tracing and image quality as separate measurements. The strongest upgrades let a game retain a performance-oriented target while improving clarity or effects; others may offer only a cleaner image, stronger ray tracing or no documented change at all. A 4K screen helps reveal most of these differences, while a 120Hz screen is specifically needed for 120Hz modes.
