Start by confirming each company’s products, reporting segments, geography and end markets. Then align fiscal periods, currency and accounting scope before comparing growth, margins, returns, leverage, cash conversion and valuation. A low P/E is only one input: it can describe a slow-growing, low-return or highly cyclical business rather than a bargain.
What you are actually comparing
The words plywood, cement and glass describe materials, not standardized stock-market categories. A plywood company may also sell fibreboard, veneers or other interior products. A cement producer may operate ready-mix concrete plants, mines, grinding units and logistics businesses. A glass maker may combine automotive glass, float glass, architectural products, coating and fabrication. Read the latest annual report, segment note and quarterly presentation before placing a company in a peer set.

The first question is therefore not “Which stock has the lowest multiple?” It is “Which economic exposure am I buying?” Demand, input costs, asset intensity and balance-sheet risk differ materially across the three groups.

Normalize the data before comparing companies
Cross-sector rankings become misleading when one company is measured on a consolidated annual basis and another on a different quarter, currency or segment. Use this sequence for every candidate.

- Map the business. Record products, reporting segments, subsidiaries, geographic markets and major customers. Separate manufacturing from distribution and unrelated businesses.
- Set the same period. Use the same fiscal year-end where possible. If fiscal years differ, disclose the mismatch and avoid treating the figures as a synchronized cycle snapshot. Compare year-over-year quarters rather than isolated sequential quarters when seasonality matters.
- Use one accounting scope. Compare consolidated with consolidated, or standalone with standalone. Check whether a metric is a segment result, continuing operation, or total company figure.
- Align currency and units. Convert currencies consistently and retain the original currency in your worksheet. Keep crore, million and billion units distinct until the conversion is checked.
- Separate reported and calculated numbers. Label issuer-reported revenue, profit, debt and cash flow separately from ratios you calculate. Preserve definitions such as gross debt versus net debt and average versus period-end equity.
- Record the measurement date. Market prices and multiples change daily. Put the exchange close or quote date beside every valuation figure.
Issuer filings and exchange disclosures are reported measurements, not independently harmonized estimates. Revenue is not profit; a segment result is not net income; and a company-specific margin is not a sector benchmark. Annual reports, quarterly result presentations and filing notes are the best places to verify definitions and management commentary.
The financial metrics that matter most
1. Revenue, volume and price/mix growth
Start with the source of growth. Revenue can rise because a company sold more units, charged higher prices, shifted toward premium products, acquired a business or benefited from currency movements. For each company, collect reported revenue growth and, when disclosed, physical volume, realization and mix.
- Plywood: track board or veneer volume, average realization, premium-product share, dealer expansion and utilization.
- Cement: track dispatch volume, realization per tonne, regional mix, kiln utilization and premium or blended-cement share.
- Glass: track automotive and architectural volumes, price/mix, capacity utilization and specialty-glass contribution.
Revenue growth without volume or realization context can conceal margin pressure. A price increase that merely offsets resin, fuel or freight inflation is different from sustainable volume growth.
2. EBITDA, operating and net margins
Use EBITDA or operating margin to see how effectively the company converts sales into operating earnings, then use net margin to capture depreciation, interest and tax. Calculate each from the same scope and period:
EBITDA margin = EBITDA ÷ revenue × 100Operating margin = operating profit ÷ revenue × 100Net margin = net profit ÷ revenue × 100
Read margins alongside the cost structure. Wood and resin can move sharply for plywood. Cement profitability is exposed to fuel, electricity, freight and regional pricing. Glass furnaces consume substantial energy, while fabrication yield, breakage and customer mix affect realized margins. A margin peak during unusually favorable input prices should not be treated as a normal run rate.
Check whether management reports one-off gains, impairment, restructuring, inventory effects or exceptional costs. A clean comparison may require separating recurring operating performance from those items, while retaining the statutory result for a complete record.

3. ROE, ROCE and the quality of returns
Return on equity (ROE) shows profit generated on shareholders’ average equity. Return on capital employed (ROCE) tests operating profit against the capital tied up in the business and is particularly useful for asset-heavy cement and glass operations. A common calculation is ROCE = EBIT ÷ average capital employed × 100; use the company’s disclosed definition when it differs.
Recommended Free Tools
Interpret returns with leverage and asset age. Debt can lift ROE while increasing financial risk, and a new kiln or furnace may depress ROCE before utilization improves. Compare a multi-year trend rather than one unusually strong or weak year. Also ask whether reported equity is distorted by goodwill, revaluation or large accumulated losses.
4. Leverage, interest cover and liquidity
Debt-to-equity is a useful starting point, but it is not sufficient across sectors. Add net debt/EBITDA, interest cover, lease liabilities, debt maturities, cash balances and committed facilities.
- Debt-to-equity: indicates debt relative to book equity, but can be distorted by equity size and accounting adjustments.
- Net debt/EBITDA: relates debt after cash to operating earnings and is useful for comparing expansion-heavy producers.
- Interest cover: tests how comfortably operating earnings pay finance costs; examine its direction through the cycle.
- Liquidity: review near-term maturities, covenant headroom, working-capital needs and the ability to fund maintenance capex.
Cement expansion debt can become burdensome if regional prices weaken. Glass companies may face large furnace-rebuild or project obligations. Plywood businesses can appear lightly indebted while tying up significant cash in inventory and dealer receivables.
5. Operating cash flow, capex and cash conversion
Profit does not automatically become cash. Compare operating cash flow (OCF) with net profit and with capital expenditure. A practical set of checks is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
OCF conversion = operating cash flow ÷ net profitFree cash flow before financing = operating cash flow − capital expenditure- Review working-capital movements in inventory, receivables and payables.
Maintenance capex and growth capex have different implications. A furnace rebuild or kiln expansion may depress free cash flow for several years but protect future capacity. Conversely, persistently weak OCF despite accounting profit can signal inventory accumulation, slow collections or low-quality earnings.

6. Valuation: P/E, EV/EBITDA and P/B in context
P/E compares the share price with earnings per share. EV/EBITDA includes debt and cash in the enterprise value and can be more informative when leverage differs. Price-to-book (P/B) is useful when asset values and returns on equity are central, but book values may not reflect replacement cost or the economic value of brands and distribution.
Use at least three reference points:
- the company’s own historical range across a full cycle;
- peer multiples for businesses with similar products, geography, leverage and returns;
- the growth, margin and return profile that could justify the multiple.
A low P/E can reflect weak earnings quality, high debt, a cyclical peak in profits, low ROE or an expected downturn. A high P/E can reflect stronger growth, scarcity value or premium returns, but it also leaves less room for disappointment. Never rank a plywood, cement and glass stock solely by the cheapest multiple.

The illustration shows why a single-ratio screen is inadequate. Nuvoco had the lowest P/E and debt-to-equity in this dated set, yet its ROE was also the lowest. Greenply showed the highest ROE and the fastest FY26 revenue growth among the three, while Asahi India Glass traded at the highest P/E and had a stronger Q1 growth rate than its FY26 rate. Those observations do not establish which stock is superior: they identify the questions that require further work on margins, ROCE, cash-flow durability, debt maturities and segment outlook.
Do not merge these figures with older global glass disclosures or with companies reporting different fiscal periods. The period, geography, currency and accounting scope must remain attached to every number.
Sector economics that explain the ratios
Plywood: commodity exposure and working capital
Plywood manufacturers face wood-fibre or veneer availability, resin prices, labour and freight. Product differentiation, premium grades and dealer reach can support realizations, but commodity panels remain exposed to short-term supply and demand.

For a plywood stock, check how quickly input costs can be passed through, whether inventory is rising faster than sales, and whether growth comes from owned manufacturing or lower-margin distribution. Capacity additions can lower utilization before demand catches up.
Cement: freight, fuel and regional pricing
Cement is heavy and expensive to transport, so regional market share, freight distance and plant location matter. Limestone access, fuel, electricity, gypsum or other additives and maintenance shutdowns influence cost per tonne. A company can report volume growth while margins fall if fuel and freight rise faster than realizations.
Examine kiln and grinding utilization, premium-product mix, capacity additions, integrated versus grinding-only capacity, and expansion debt. Infrastructure and housing demand can support volumes, but regional oversupply can weaken prices even when the national construction story looks strong.
Glass: energy, furnaces and customer concentration
Glass furnaces require continuous, energy-intensive operation. Energy prices, raw-material costs, furnace efficiency, coating or fabrication yield and breakage affect margins. Automotive glass demand follows vehicle production and model launches; architectural glass follows construction and project timing. Specialty products may improve mix but can concentrate sales among a small number of customers.
Track furnace age, rebuild schedules, utilization, project ramp-up costs and customer concentration. A shutdown or rebuild can reduce returns before the new asset reaches normal output.
Best Value
Cycle, capacity and reporting risks
- Demand cycles: housing, infrastructure, vehicles and renovation can turn at different times. Do not assume a construction recovery benefits all three sectors equally.
- Input shocks: fuel, electricity, wood, resin, limestone-related costs and freight can compress margins before selling prices adjust.
- Capacity additions: new boards, kilns, grinding units or furnaces may dilute utilization and returns during commissioning.
- Maintenance outages: planned shutdowns can make a single quarter look weak even when the full-year economics are intact.
- Seasonality: compare year-over-year quarters and then confirm the annual trend; one quarter is not a cycle verdict.
- Commodity pricing: plywood and other commodity products can reprice rapidly as supply and demand expectations change.
- Market volatility: share prices, P/E and EV multiples can move independently of the latest operating result.
A repeatable worksheet and decision process
Build the operating sheet
- Enter the latest annual and quarterly revenue, volume, realization and segment data, preserving the reporting period.
- Calculate EBITDA, operating and net margins from the same consolidated or standalone scope.
- Record ROE and calculate ROCE using the issuer’s stated definition or a clearly documented formula.
- Enter gross debt, cash, lease liabilities, net debt, interest expense and maturities.
- Enter OCF, capex and working-capital changes; calculate cash conversion and free cash flow before financing.
- Record the share price date, market capitalization, P/E, EV/EBITDA and P/B, then compare each with peer and historical ranges.
Score quality before valuation
Use a simple traffic-light or ranking system for growth quality, margin stability, returns, leverage, cash conversion and governance or disclosure quality. Treat valuation as the final overlay, not the first filter. A company that is slightly more expensive but generates durable cash and superior returns may carry less downside than a nominally cheap, heavily cyclical peer.
Write an explicit investment case and disconfirming evidence
- State the operating driver: volume, price, mix, utilization or cost reduction.
- State the financial proof: improving margins, ROCE, OCF conversion or declining leverage.
- State the valuation assumption: which multiple or earnings path is required.
- List what would invalidate the case, such as weaker demand, input inflation, a delayed project, rising debt or lost customer concentration.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Choosing the lowest P/E
Why it fails: earnings may be temporarily elevated, returns may be weak, or debt and cycle risk may be underpriced.
Fix: pair P/E with growth, ROE or ROCE, margin history, leverage and cash flow.
Mixing fiscal periods and geographies
Why it fails: a favorable quarter in one region can be compared with a weak quarter elsewhere or with a different stage of the construction cycle.
Fix: align periods and disclose every mismatch.
Comparing consolidated revenue with a segment result
Why it fails: intercompany sales, different cost allocations and unrelated businesses distort the comparison.
Fix: match reporting scope and read segment notes.
Ignoring capex in asset-heavy businesses
Why it fails: EBITDA can look healthy while maintenance or rebuild spending consumes cash.
Fix: compare OCF less capex and inspect the capex pipeline.
Treating one quarter as a trend
Why it fails: weather, shutdowns, seasonality and inventory timing can overwhelm underlying demand.
Fix: use year-over-year comparisons and a full-year series.
Using a peer multiple without checking business mix
Why it fails: automotive glass, architectural glass, ready-mix concrete and premium plywood have different customers and economics.
Fix: compare the relevant segment, then adjust for mix, geography, leverage and returns.
Filing-refresh checklist
- Read the latest annual report, quarterly result presentation and segment notes.
- Confirm fiscal year, quarter, currency, units and consolidated or standalone scope.
- Refresh price, market capitalization and valuation multiples using the latest exchange or issuer data.
- Reconcile revenue, profit, debt and OCF to the financial statements.
- Check volume, realization, utilization, premium mix and input-cost commentary.
- Review capex commitments, maintenance or furnace-rebuild schedules, maturities and covenant headroom.
- Compare year-over-year quarters and the multi-year trend before drawing a conclusion.
- Use a regulated exchange or broker screener for execution data, and verify any displayed ratio against the issuer filing.
The practical conclusion is a disciplined sequence: identify the true business exposure, normalize the accounting, test operating quality and cash generation, assess balance-sheet risk, and only then decide whether the valuation compensates for the cycle. That process makes plywood, cement and glass stocks comparable without pretending they are the same business.
