To compare an options-implied earnings move with a bank stock’s history, divide the at-the-money call-and-put straddle by the share price, then compare that percentage with consistently measured absolute moves from prior earnings reports. The comparison is valid only when the option expiry, quote timestamp, report timing and stock-price window are defined the same way for every observation.
What this comparison actually measures
An at-the-money (ATM) straddle combines one call and one put at the strike nearest the stock price. Because the two options represent movement in either direction, their combined premium is a market-priced estimate of event magnitude, not a forecast of whether the bank stock will rise or fall.

“It tells you how big a move the market is pricing in, in either direction. It does not tell you which way the stock will go, and it is not a promise that the stock will move that much.” — OptionsPro Academy, reviewed October 9, 2026.

Your historical benchmark must measure the same type of movement: the percentage change from a defined pre-announcement close to the defined post-announcement close. Keep the signed return for direction, but use its absolute value when asking whether the realized move exceeded the implied threshold.

Define the event before collecting prices
Record whether the report is before the open or after the close
The announcement clock determines which two stock closes belong in the calculation. A before-open report is released before trading begins, so the relevant reaction ends at that day’s close. An after-close report is released after the session, so the reaction ends at the next session’s close.
Record the scheduled date and timing for the current report and every historical report. If a company changes its release time, treat the timing as an event-level field rather than assuming all quarters follow the same pattern.
Use one expiry rule throughout
Select the first listed option expiration on or after each report date. Apply that rule to the current chain and to every historical observation. A weekly option that expires before the announcement cannot capture the event; an expiry several weeks later may include additional post-earnings risk.
Check the selected expiration’s calendar for other scheduled catalysts. An investor day, court ruling or central-bank decision inside the same expiry can add premium that is not specific to earnings. Dombey Capital highlights these overlapping events as a reason to annotate or exclude an observation rather than treating the entire premium as an earnings forecast.
Choose the nearest strike and document liquidity
Identify the strike nearest the stock price at the capture time. Record the call and put bid, ask and the price convention you use. A bid/ask midpoint is usually more reproducible than an isolated last trade, but a documented mark can also be used when the chain supplies one. Preserve the timestamp, spot price, strike, expiration, open interest and volume when available so another reader can audit the selection.
Calculate the current implied percentage move
Raw straddle method
Use unrounded inputs in the calculation:
implied_move_pct = (ATM_call_mid + ATM_put_mid) / spot_price × 100
If the stock is at 100, the nearest-strike call midpoint is 3.10 and the put midpoint is 2.90, the straddle costs 6.00. The raw implied move is 6.0%.

| Input | Illustrative value |
|---|---|
| Spot price | 100.00 |
| ATM call premium | 3.10 |
| ATM put premium | 2.90 |
| Straddle premium | 6.00 |
| Implied percentage move | 6.0% |
| Price band from the raw straddle | 94.00 to 106.00 |
The corresponding band is calculated as spot_price × (1 ± implied_move_pct). In this example, 100 × (1 − 0.06) is 94 and 100 × (1 + 0.06) is 106. This arithmetic is illustrative, not a quoted market observation.
Do not silently apply a one-standard-deviation adjustment
Some services convert the straddle into an estimated one-standard-deviation range. OptionsMovement publishes expected move = (ATM straddle price / stock price) × 1.2533. That convention produces a different percentage from the raw straddle. State explicitly which convention you use and never compare an adjusted range with an unadjusted historical threshold.
Align historical capture and reaction closes
Alphanume describes the convention as “priced at the close before, measured at the close after.” Apply it as follows:
| Report timing | Capture price and option chain | Reaction price |
|---|---|---|
| Before the open | Prior trading session’s close | Report day’s close |
| After the close | Report day’s close | Next trading session’s close |
For the current implied move, capture the spot and option premiums at the same close that precedes the announcement under this convention. For each past report, use the corresponding close pair. Intraday snapshots, an earlier session or a weekly option spanning extra events are different measurements; label them instead of mixing them into a strict sample.
Measure every historical earnings reaction
Calculate absolute and signed returns
For each report, calculate:
absolute_move_pct = abs(reaction_close / capture_close − 1) × 100
Also retain the signed return:
signed_move_pct = (reaction_close / capture_close − 1) × 100
The absolute value answers “how large was the reaction?” The signed value preserves whether the stock rose or fell, which is essential for a separate directional analysis. Do not replace the signed series with absolute values in your raw event ledger.

Keep one row per report
A practical event record contains:
- Report date and before-open or after-close timing.
- Capture close, reaction close and their timestamps.
- Signed and absolute percentage moves.
- Spot price, nearest strike, expiration and call/put premiums used for any implied-move calculation.
- Bid, ask or mark convention, plus open interest and volume when available.
- Notes on acquisitions, capital raises, regulatory actions, major credit-loss disclosures, rate shocks or overlapping scheduled catalysts.
Keeping every report visible prevents a single memorable quarter from becoming an unexamined benchmark.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a history that can answer the question
Use more than a convenient handful when possible
PrintEarnings uses the average absolute move from the last eight earnings reports as one benchmark. Eight observations can be a useful minimum display, but a larger uninterrupted history gives the median and tail estimates more stability. Show the individual observations and state the exact number of reports, date range and any exclusions.
Do not hide contaminated events
A large move caused by a bank acquisition, emergency capital raise, regulatory action, unusually large credit-loss disclosure or exceptional rate move may still be a real post-earnings return, but it is not a clean measure of ordinary earnings sensitivity. Keep the observation in the ledger, mark the confounder and present results with and without the flagged event only if both calculations are shown clearly.
There is no universal bank adjustment factor established for these events. The named stock’s own event history is the appropriate baseline, with annotations explaining why an outlier may not repeat.
Summarize the historical distribution
For the absolute-move column, calculate and display:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Mean: the arithmetic average, which moves materially when a crisis-like event is included.
- Range: the smallest and largest observed absolute moves.
- Percentiles: for example, the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles to show the distribution’s center and spread.
- Exceedance count: the number of historical absolute moves greater than the current implied percentage.
- Exceedance share: that count divided by the number of usable reports.
Use a strict greater-than test for “exceeded.” If a historical move exactly equals the implied threshold, report it as equal rather than exceeding it. Preserve enough decimal precision in calculations to avoid changing the result through early rounding.
Compare magnitude and direction on separate axes
A straddle answers only the magnitude question. Direction requires independent evidence such as earnings expectations, guidance, balance-sheet news, interest-rate conditions or identifiable order flow. Present the two questions separately:

| Axis | What to compare | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing magnitude | Current implied move versus historical median, mean and percentile range | Relatively rich or cheap event-volatility pricing |
| Direction | Fundamental, news or flow evidence for an upside or downside bias | Directional view, clearly separate from the straddle result |
| Event-window quality | Clean window, extra expiry days or overlapping catalyst | Confidence in how specifically the number represents earnings |
If the implied move is above the selected history’s median or mean, options are pricing a larger event than those observations did. That is a statement about relative event-volatility pricing, not a short recommendation. If it is below the median or mean, the pricing is relatively cheaper than the selected history, not a long recommendation.
An implied move near the upper tail deserves a different risk discussion from one near the center, even when both exceed the mean. The exceedance share tells you how often the stock historically cleared today’s threshold; it does not predict the sign of the next move.
Worked comparison with a hypothetical bank stock
Assume the current stock price is 100 and the ATM straddle implies 6.0%. Suppose eight clean historical absolute moves are 3.2%, 4.1%, 4.8%, 5.0%, 5.7%, 6.4%, 8.2% and 11.0%. The median is the average of the fourth and fifth observations, or 5.35%. The current 6.0% implied move is above that median. Four historical moves—6.4%, 8.2% and 11.0%, plus no others above 6.0%—actually exceed it, so the exceedance count is 3 of 8, or 37.5%.
The example illustrates why the mean and median can differ: the 11.0% observation pulls the mean upward, while the median stays closer to the typical event. In a published analysis, calculate these statistics from the actual event ledger and show the dates and annotations behind each value.
Bank-stock controls that matter most
Rates and credit news
Bank shares can react to a sharp rate move, deposit-cost surprise, credit-loss disclosure or capital announcement at the same time as earnings. Annotate those events so readers can distinguish an earnings response from a broader repricing of the bank’s balance sheet or the financial sector.
Corporate and regulatory events
Acquisitions, capital raises, enforcement actions and court or regulatory decisions can dominate the post-report move. If one is inside the selected option expiry, identify it before interpreting the straddle as an earnings-only estimate.
Liquidity and strike selection
Wide bid/ask spreads make a midpoint less reliable. Prefer a liquid strike near spot, retain the quoted spread and timestamp, and explain any use of a mark instead of a midpoint. A stale last trade can understate or overstate the premium even when the displayed strike looks appropriate.
Best Value
Common errors and how to correct them
Using the wrong close for an after-close report
Measuring an after-close announcement from the prior day’s close to that same day’s close misses the reaction session. Capture at the announcement day’s close and measure at the next session’s close.
Mixing expiries
Comparing a current weekly option with historical monthly options changes the amount of time and event exposure in the premium. Apply the first-expiry-on-or-after-report rule consistently.
Switching quote conventions
Using a midpoint today, a last trade for one quarter and a vendor mark for another makes the implied series difficult to audit. Choose one convention, record it and flag exceptions.

Reporting only an average
An average can conceal whether the current threshold sits in the center or at the tail of the distribution. Include the median, percentile range, minimum, maximum and exceedance share.
Treating magnitude as direction
A 6% straddle does not imply a 6% gain or a 6% loss. Keep directional evidence in a separate section and retain signed historical returns for that purpose.
A repeatable calculation workflow
- Confirm the earnings date and classify the release as before the open or after the close.
- Set the capture and reaction closes using the timing table.
- Select the first listed expiry on or after the report date.
- Find the strike nearest spot and record call and put bid, ask, midpoint or mark, timestamp, open interest and volume.
- Compute the raw straddle and divide by spot for the implied percentage move; state any one-standard-deviation convention separately.
- For every prior report, capture the correctly timed close pair and calculate signed and absolute returns.
- Annotate overlapping catalysts and bank-specific confounders without silently deleting observations.
- Calculate median, mean, percentiles, range, exceedance count and exceedance share.
- Present magnitude pricing, directional evidence and event-window quality as separate judgments.
- Round only for display and retain the unrounded inputs and formulas in the audit record.
What the result can and cannot tell you
This method estimates how much movement the options market is charging for around a specified event and shows how that threshold compares with the stock’s own measured history. It cannot establish that the option premium is mispriced, guarantee that the next move will stay inside the band or identify its direction.
Expiry contamination, quote illiquidity, changing market regimes and one-off bank events can all weaken the comparison. A transparent event ledger, consistent timing and explicit annotations make those limitations visible instead of disguising them as precision.
