The better investment is the one whose future cash flows justify its price under assumptions you can defend. Meta currently has the largest and most profitable business of the three on reported 2025 results; Netflix combines strong growth with a 29.5% operating margin; Tesla has substantial cash and long-term software and energy ambitions, but its 2025 revenue and net income fell. Those facts describe starting points, not future returns.
Compare the companies in this order: business durability, growth and operating leverage, cash generation after reinvestment, balance-sheet capacity, valuation at one synchronized market price, and risks that could invalidate your assumptions. Their financial statements are not directly interchangeable: advertising, vehicle manufacturing and subscription content have different costs, capital needs and accounting.

Start with the businesses, not the ticker symbols
Meta, Tesla and Netflix all attract growth investors, but they monetize different assets. Meta sells targeted advertising across its Family of Apps and is funding artificial-intelligence infrastructure and Reality Labs. Tesla sells vehicles, energy products and services while presenting autonomy, software and fleet-based profits as future opportunities. Netflix sells streaming entertainment, increasingly supplemented by advertising, and must continually finance and amortize content.

Why revenue quality matters
Advertising revenue can scale rapidly once a platform has users, but it is sensitive to economic cycles, privacy rules, measurement changes and advertiser demand. Vehicle revenue requires factories, inventory, logistics, warranties and continual price competition. Streaming revenue is recurring, yet customers can cancel and the company must replace or renew a large content slate. A dollar of revenue therefore does not have the same incremental margin or durability at each company.
Compare the reported 2025 performance
The following numbers are historical results for the year ended December 31, 2025. They are not forecasts and should not be read as a promise that the same growth or margins will continue.

Meta: scale and profitability with a large investment bill
Meta produced $200.966 billion of revenue and $83.276 billion of operating income in 2025, with net income of $60.46 billion. Revenue rose 22% from 2024. Family of Apps supplied almost all reported revenue, while Reality Labs produced only $2.207 billion and lost $19.193 billion at the operating level. That combination gives Meta exceptional current earnings power but also creates a real question: will AI infrastructure and Reality Labs eventually earn returns above their cost of capital, or will they remain a permanent drag?

Tesla: weaker reported results despite positive cash generation
Tesla’s 2025 revenue was $94.83 billion, and net income attributable to common stockholders was $3.79 billion, $3.30 billion lower than in 2024. Operating cash flow remained positive at $14.75 billion. The decline means an investor must separate today’s automotive economics from the value assigned to energy, autonomy, software and fleet services. Those future businesses may become important, but their prospective contribution should be modeled rather than counted as current profit.

Netflix: growth and operating leverage
Netflix revenue increased 16% to $45.183 billion. Operating income rose 28% to $13.327 billion, producing a 29.5% operating margin, while net income reached $10.981 billion. The faster growth in operating income than revenue indicates operating leverage in 2025. It does not eliminate the need to fund content: additions to content assets were $17.097 billion, a figure that must be considered alongside cash generation and amortization.
Measure cash after the investment required to grow
Accounting earnings are not the same as distributable cash. For each company, identify operating cash flow, capital expenditures, content or infrastructure investment, working-capital movements and any unusual items. Then decide whether the spending is maintenance, growth or a mixture.
| Cash-flow item (2025) | Meta | Tesla | Netflix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | $115.80 billion | $14.75 billion | $10.149 billion |
| Reported free cash flow | $43.59 billion | Not provided as a comparable figure | Not provided as a comparable figure |
| Capital expenditure or content investment | AI and other capital spending is material; use the filing’s cash-flow reconciliation | $8.53 billion of capital expenditures | $17.097 billion additions to content assets |
Meta’s $115.80 billion of operating cash flow converted to $43.59 billion of free cash flow in its earnings materials. The gap reflects substantial investment, including AI capacity. Tesla’s $14.75 billion of operating cash flow against $8.53 billion of capital expenditures leaves less cash before other investments than the headline operating-cash figure suggests. Netflix’s $10.149 billion of operating cash flow must be viewed with its $17.097 billion of content additions; content spending is essential to retaining and attracting viewers, but the accounting timing differs from the cash payment.

Normalize the accounting before comparing multiples
- For Meta, test several AI infrastructure spending paths and assign a useful life and depreciation profile rather than assuming every dollar immediately produces revenue.
- For Tesla, distinguish factory and tooling investment from discretionary autonomy or computing expenditure, and model vehicle gross-margin changes separately from software revenue.
- For Netflix, reconcile content cash payments with content-asset amortization. A year with high content additions can depress free cash flow even when reported operating income is strong.
Use at least a three-to-five-year normalized cash-flow estimate. A single year can be distorted by a production cycle, a major data-center build-out, a content-spending shift or working-capital timing.

Check balance-sheet resilience and funding capacity
A strong balance sheet can finance a downturn or a strategic investment without issuing stock at an unfavorable price. A weak or highly committed balance sheet can turn a temporary slowdown into a permanent dilution or spending cut.
Tesla’s disclosed liquidity
Tesla ended 2025 with $44.06 billion in cash and investments. Compare that amount with debt maturities, purchase commitments, factory expansion and expected capital expenditure. Cash is not automatically excess cash if it is needed for inventory, construction, regulatory requirements or a planned product program.
Meta’s liquidity and commitments
Meta’s filing discloses cash, marketable securities, debt and non-marketable investments. Review those categories together rather than using cash alone. AI infrastructure commitments and Reality Labs losses can absorb liquidity even when the consolidated income statement remains highly profitable.
Netflix’s content-heavy funding model
Netflix carries significant content assets and contractual commitments. Examine the timing of content payments, amortization, licensing obligations and debt. The relevant question is whether recurring operating cash flow can fund a competitive content slate while preserving flexibility for downturns and strategic investments.

For all three companies, calculate net cash or net debt from the latest filing and list material contractual commitments. Do not treat marketable securities, restricted cash and operating cash as interchangeable.
Value each company with a synchronized market snapshot
A valuation comparison is invalid if prices and share counts come from different dates. Immediately before making the comparison, record the closing share price for Meta, Tesla and Netflix from the same trading session, the diluted weighted-average share count from the latest filing, and the latest balance-sheet cash and debt. Use the same currency and fiscal-period convention.
Core multiples
- Forward P/E: current share price divided by next-12-month diluted earnings per share. State whose earnings estimate you use and the date of the estimate.
- Enterprise value to EBIT: equity value plus debt and other claims, minus cash and cash equivalents, divided by a normalized operating-income measure. This is useful when capital structures differ.
- Price to free cash flow: equity value divided by normalized free cash flow. For Netflix, define how content additions enter free cash flow; for Meta, specify the AI-capex treatment; for Tesla, specify whether autonomy investment is growth or maintenance.
The reported historical results do not include a synchronized price snapshot, so they cannot support a claim that one of the three is currently the cheapest. A low multiple can reflect deteriorating economics, while a high multiple can be reasonable if future cash flows are both large and durable.

Build a scenario-based discounted-cash-flow model
- Set a base year using the latest reported revenue, operating income, taxes, depreciation, working capital and investment.
- Create bear, base and bull cases with explicit revenue growth, operating margin, tax rate, reinvestment and terminal growth assumptions.
- Discount unlevered free cash flow at a rate consistent with the company’s business and financial risk.
- Calculate terminal value with a conservative perpetual-growth rate or an exit multiple, then test both methods.
- Subtract net debt and other claims and divide by diluted shares.
- Probability-weight the cases and compare the resulting value with the synchronized share price.
Company-specific assumptions to stress-test
Meta: advertising durability versus AI and Reality Labs spending
In a Meta model, vary ad impressions, price per ad, user engagement, privacy-related targeting limits and the economic cycle. Then model AI infrastructure spending, depreciation and resulting efficiency or monetization benefits. Keep Reality Labs separate: its $2.207 billion of 2025 revenue and $19.193 billion operating loss should not be blended into the high-margin advertising engine without an explicit improvement path. A credible bull case needs a mechanism and timetable for that improvement; a bear case should allow continued losses and slower advertising growth.
Best Value
Tesla: present vehicle economics versus optionality
For Tesla, start with deliveries, average selling prices, automotive gross margin, incentives, warranty costs, energy growth and services. Model price cuts and factory utilization explicitly. Add separate probability-weighted cases for autonomy and software monetization instead of assigning them full value today. Include the $8.53 billion 2025 capital-expenditure base and test higher spending if new factories, computing or fleet services require it. A scenario can be attractive only if the probability-adjusted software and energy contribution outweighs the risk of weaker vehicle demand and margins.
Netflix: subscriber alternatives, advertising and content economics
Netflix discontinued reporting membership numbers and average monthly revenue per paying membership, stating: During the year ended December 31, 2025, we discontinued the reporting of membership numbers, including average paying memberships and average monthly revenue per paying membership, focusing instead on revenue and operating margin as the primary financial metrics that we believe best represent our business performance.
Use revenue growth, operating margin, engagement or other disclosed operating indicators instead of assuming a subscriber count that is no longer reported. Stress-test pricing, advertising revenue, foreign exchange, content availability, content amortization and the $17.097 billion of 2025 content additions. A durable bull case requires both continued demand and disciplined content returns.
Map risks to portfolio role
| Company | Material risks | Portfolio question |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Advertising cyclicality; privacy and regulatory constraints; AI infrastructure cost; Reality Labs losses | Can the core advertising cash engine fund investment while maintaining returns above the cost of capital? |
| Tesla | Vehicle demand and pricing; manufacturing execution; competition; regulatory exposure; gap between automotive results and AI/software expectations | How much of the valuation depends on future businesses that are not yet producing comparable profit? |
| Netflix | Competition for attention; content cost and availability; foreign exchange; pricing elasticity; advertising execution | Can content investment sustain growth and margins without requiring excessive cash or debt? |
Portfolio role follows risk tolerance and time horizon. A shareholder seeking current scale and cash generation may prefer a business whose valuation can be supported by established earnings. An investor willing to accept wider outcomes may assign more weight to Tesla’s autonomy and energy scenarios, but should cap the position if a single optimistic outcome dominates the thesis. Netflix may suit an investor focused on recurring consumer revenue and operating leverage who accepts content and attention risk. None of these roles removes the need for diversification.
A repeatable comparison workflow
- Set the decision date. Record the same-day prices, exchange rates, diluted shares and latest filings for all three companies.
- Write a one-page business thesis. Identify the customer, revenue driver, major cost, reinvestment requirement and competitive advantage for each company.
- Reconcile 2025 results. Enter revenue, operating income, net income, operating cash flow and investment figures without mixing fiscal periods.
- Normalize cash flow. Separate maintenance from growth spending and document treatment of AI infrastructure, factories, energy projects and content.
- Build three scenarios. Use explicit assumptions for growth, margins, reinvestment, discount rate and terminal value.
- Calculate valuation ranges. Compare forward P/E, EV/EBIT and price/free cash flow with the probability-weighted DCF.
- Run failure tests. Reduce growth, compress margins, increase capital spending, raise the discount rate and delay any software or advertising milestone.
- Choose position size. Match the size to downside in the bear case, correlation with existing holdings, time horizon and ability to tolerate drawdowns.
- Define review triggers. Examples include sustained margin deterioration, cash flow below the model, a major balance-sheet commitment, regulatory change or evidence that a promised new revenue stream is not monetizing.
Common comparison mistakes
- Ranking by revenue alone: Meta’s $200.966 billion includes a different cost structure from Tesla’s manufacturing revenue and Netflix’s content-funded revenue.
- Using earnings without reinvestment: Netflix content additions and Tesla capital expenditures consume cash; Meta’s AI build-out can do the same.
- Capitalizing optionality as certainty: Autonomy, new software products, advertising expansion and Reality Labs should be probability-weighted milestones, not automatic value.
- Mixing dates: A price from one quarter and earnings from another can create a false bargain or an overstated premium.
- Ignoring dilution and commitments: Use diluted shares and include debt, leases, purchase obligations and content commitments where material.
- Assuming historical growth repeats: Meta’s 22% revenue growth, Netflix’s 16% growth and Tesla’s decline are observations from 2025, not forecasts.
- Treating a multiple as a verdict: A multiple is an output of expected growth, margins, risk and reinvestment; it is not a substitute for those assumptions.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Meta enters the comparison with the greatest reported 2025 revenue and operating income, alongside material AI and Reality Labs investment. Netflix delivered the clearest combination of reported growth, operating leverage and cash generation, but its content model requires continual spending. Tesla maintained positive operating cash flow and a large cash-and-investments balance while reporting lower revenue and net income, leaving more of its long-term valuation dependent on execution and future businesses.
Those facts can inform a valuation model, but they cannot identify the best investment without a current price and your assumptions about growth, margins, reinvestment and risk. The defensible choice is the company whose probability-weighted cash flows still offer a margin of safety after you stress the thesis—not the company with the most exciting narrative or the lowest headline multiple.
