The most reliable way to compare mega-cap technology stocks is to align the same price date, fiscal period, share-count basis, and currency, then evaluate valuation alongside growth quality, free-cash-flow generation, reinvestment needs, and balance-sheet risk. A low P/E or price-to-free-cash-flow ratio is not automatically cheap when growth is slowing, capital spending is surging, or dilution is absorbing the benefit of higher earnings.
This guide gives you a repeatable process for comparing companies such as Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and NVIDIA without mixing reported results with forecasts or treating different business models as interchangeable.

Start by defining the comparison correctly
Write down the peer set before looking at multiples. “Mega-cap technology” can include diversified software, cloud, advertising, e-commerce, semiconductor, and hardware businesses. Those models have different margins, depreciation patterns, working-capital cycles, and capital requirements. A comparison is useful only after you state which companies qualify and why.
Choose a fixed date and price source
Record the market close date and time zone for every share price. Market prices, enterprise values, analyst estimates, and rankings change daily. A table that combines one company’s price from Monday with another’s price from Friday is not a same-date comparison. Save the closing price, currency, and whether you use a split-adjusted price.

Align fiscal years and currencies
Use each company’s reported fiscal period, and label it explicitly. Microsoft’s fiscal year ends in June, while Amazon and Alphabet report calendar-year periods; NVIDIA uses its own fiscal calendar. You can compare the latest annual periods, but you must show the end date beside every figure rather than calling them all “2025” without qualification.
Convert currencies consistently when necessary, and identify the conversion date and rate. Do not combine a trailing twelve-month denominator with a fiscal-year denominator unless the table labels the difference.
Use primary filings as the accounting baseline
Annual reports and SEC filings provide audited revenue, operating income, net income, cash from operations, capital expenditures, debt, cash, share counts, and stock-based compensation. Relevant filings include Microsoft’s 2025 Annual Report, its 2025 Form 10-K, Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K, Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K, and NVIDIA’s annual-report archive. Use a separately timestamped market-data source for prices and consensus estimates.
Build a valuation set that uses matching denominators
Valuation answers “what is the market paying for a defined stream of profits or cash?” It does not answer whether that stream is durable. Calculate several measures and attach the period and share-count convention to every number.
Trailing and forward P/E
Trailing P/E equals the share price divided by diluted earnings per share for the latest completed period. Forward P/E uses an estimate, so record the estimate provider, publication date, fiscal year, and whether it is a consensus mean or another statistic. Never put trailing P/E and forward P/E in one unlabeled column.
P/E is most informative for profitable companies with comparable accounting and business mixes. It can mislead when one company has a temporary tax benefit, restructuring charge, acquisition-related amortization, or unusually high investment spending. If earnings are negative or unusually depressed, mark P/E as not meaningful rather than forcing a number.

Enterprise-value multiples
Enterprise value generally starts with equity value, adds debt and other debt-like claims, and subtracts cash and cash equivalents. EV/EBITDA can make companies with different leverage or depreciation schedules more comparable, but EBITDA excludes capital expenditures and can overstate cash available to owners in infrastructure-heavy businesses. State which debt, lease liabilities, and cash items you include.

Price-to-free-cash-flow
Price-to-free-cash-flow (P/FCF) divides equity value by free cash flow attributable to common shareholders. Define free cash flow as cash from operations minus capital expenditures, and specify whether the cash-flow period is a fiscal year or trailing twelve months. This multiple is useful when cash generation is central, but it is sensitive to working-capital swings, acquisition payments, and the timing of large data-center or factory investments.
Valuation worksheet
| Measure | Formula | Period and qualification to record | Common distortion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailing P/E | price ÷ diluted EPS |
Latest completed fiscal year or trailing twelve months; market-close date and diluted share basis | One-time gains, charges, or tax effects |
| Forward P/E | price ÷ forecast EPS |
Forecast fiscal year, estimate date, source, and currency | Estimate revisions and differing fiscal calendars |
| EV/EBITDA | enterprise value ÷ EBITDA |
Same period for EV and EBITDA; list debt, leases, and cash treatment | Ignores capex and can flatter capital-intensive firms |
| P/FCF | equity value ÷ (cash from operations − capex) |
Same cash-flow period, share-count convention, and price date | Working capital, acquisitions, and investment cycles |
Measure growth over several years, not one headline rate
Collect at least three years of revenue and operating-income or EPS history. Calculate compound annual growth rate only when the start and end periods are comparable. A single year can be distorted by a low prior-year base, a product launch, foreign-exchange movement, an acquisition, or a divestiture.
Separate revenue growth from profit growth
Revenue can rise while EPS falls if margins contract, stock-based compensation increases, taxes normalize, or investment spending accelerates. Conversely, EPS can grow faster than revenue through operating leverage, buybacks, or a lower tax rate. Keep revenue, operating income, net income, diluted EPS, and diluted share count in separate rows.
Explain the source of growth
- Volume: more users, subscriptions, units, transactions, or workloads.
- Pricing and mix: higher prices or a shift toward premium products and services.
- Acquisitions: acquired revenue and any purchase-accounting effects.
- Foreign exchange: reported growth that differs from constant-currency growth.
- Product cycle: a new platform, chip generation, cloud service, or advertising format.
Use management’s segment disclosures to identify which factors drove growth, but distinguish reported facts from management’s expectations. A durable comparison asks whether the driver can persist and what investment it requires.

Analyze free cash flow from the cash-flow statement
Begin with cash from operations (CFO), then subtract capital expenditures (capex): FCF = CFO − capex. Use the cash-flow statement rather than assuming net income equals cash. Calculate both free-cash-flow margin (FCF ÷ revenue) and conversion from net income (FCF ÷ net income), and explain unusual movements.

Microsoft fiscal 2025 example
Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 annual report states that cash from operations increased $17.6 billion to $136.2 billion for the fiscal year. The same filing reports $72.6 billion of cash used in investing and a $20.1 billion increase in additions to property and equipment. These are fiscal-2025 figures, not a general estimate of Microsoft’s ongoing annual cash flow; verify the exact capex line and period in the annual report and Form 10-K before calculating a multiple.
Inspect the quality of cash generation
- Working capital: receivables, payables, inventory, and deferred revenue can temporarily lift or depress CFO.
- Stock-based compensation: it is added back in CFO but represents economic dilution; compare the expense with share-count growth and repurchases.
- Acquisitions: acquisition payments are investing cash outflows and are not included in a simple capex subtraction.
- Capital intensity: separate maintenance capex from expansion capex when the filing provides enough detail, while acknowledging that the split is often estimated.
- Debt issuance and repayments: financing cash flow can fund investment without improving underlying FCF.
A company can report rising CFO while FCF stagnates if data-center, manufacturing, or network investment grows faster. That is not automatically negative: judge whether the spending is likely to earn an attractive return and whether the balance sheet can support it.
Compare reinvestment and the durability of the growth engine
Record capex as a percentage of revenue and research-and-development (R&D) expense as a percentage of revenue. High capex may depress current FCF while building capacity for future cloud, artificial-intelligence, semiconductor, or logistics demand. Low capex can indicate an asset-light model, but it can also reflect underinvestment.

- Is capacity being added ahead of signed demand, or in response to existing utilization?
- How quickly could capex be reduced if growth slowed?
- Do depreciation and amortization reflect the useful life of the assets?
- Does the company disclose customer concentration or dependence on a small number of large buyers?
- Is R&D producing products that defend pricing power, or merely maintaining an existing platform?
Nasdaq’s discussion of AI-related capital expenditure provides cross-company context, but aggregate index figures are not substitutes for any company’s accounting results; use the Nasdaq research only as context alongside each issuer’s filing.
Check the balance sheet and per-share capital returns
Calculate net cash or net debt using a clearly defined set of cash, investments, debt, and lease obligations. Review maturities, interest expense, and access to liquidity. A cash-rich company can sustain investment or buybacks during a downturn; a highly leveraged company may have less flexibility even when EBITDA is strong.
Account for dilution and buybacks
Track basic and diluted shares over at least three years. Stock-based compensation can make reported earnings growth look stronger than per-share value creation if the share count expands. Buybacks can offset dilution or reduce shares, but the price paid matters: repurchasing heavily at an elevated valuation may destroy value even when EPS rises.

Include dividends and acquisition spending
Record dividends, repurchases, acquisitions, and debt issuance in a capital-allocation table. A company that produces strong FCF but spends most of it on acquisitions has a different risk profile from one returning cash to shareholders. Evaluate the returns and integration record rather than treating either policy as automatically superior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a scorecard instead of a single “cheapest” ranking
Score each company on the same definitions and attach a written explanation. A simple five-category scorecard can expose why a low multiple may be justified or why a premium may be durable.
| Category | What to measure | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Valuation | Trailing and forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, P/FCF | Lower is attractive only with comparable periods, quality, and risk |
| Growth quality | Three-year revenue and operating-income/EPS growth; driver mix | Prefer repeatable, diversified growth over a one-time base effect |
| Cash generation | FCF growth, FCF margin, and FCF-to-net-income conversion | Check working capital, SBC, acquisitions, and capex timing |
| Reinvestment | Capex and R&D intensity; expected return on new capacity | High spending can be productive or value-destructive |
| Financial resilience | Net cash/debt, maturities, dilution, buybacks, dividends | Resilience matters when growth or margins weaken |
| Durability and risk | Competition, customer concentration, regulation, product cycles | Long-lived advantages can justify a valuation premium |
Run sensitivity tests before reaching a conclusion
Do not present one precise fair value as if it were certain. Recalculate the comparison under at least three cases:
- Lower growth: reduce revenue and operating-income growth assumptions and observe the effect on forward P/E and FCF.
- Higher discount rate: apply a higher required return to long-duration cash flows; premium-valued stocks are usually more sensitive.
- Weaker margins: model higher cloud, semiconductor, logistics, or support costs and test whether FCF still covers investment and shareholder returns.
Show which companies remain attractive across cases rather than selecting the winner from a single optimistic forecast. If a conclusion changes dramatically with a small assumption shift, describe it as valuation-sensitive.
A repeatable comparison workflow
- Set the scope: name the companies, market-close date, currency, fiscal periods, and share-count convention.
- Download filings: collect the latest annual reports and 10-K filings, plus the preceding two years for trend analysis.
- Normalize accounting: classify continuing operations, exceptional items, acquisitions, leases, and stock compensation consistently.
- Build the operating sheet: enter revenue, operating income, net income, diluted EPS, diluted shares, CFO, capex, FCF, R&D, and debt.
- Calculate multiples: use the same price date and denominator period; label trailing versus forward values.
- Explain growth: identify volume, pricing, mix, acquisitions, FX, and product-cycle effects.
- Assess reinvestment: compare capex and R&D intensity with capacity, utilization, competitive position, and customer concentration.
- Assess capital allocation: review maturities, net cash/debt, dilution, buybacks, dividends, acquisitions, and debt issuance.
- Run sensitivities: test lower growth, higher discount rates, and weaker margins.
- Write the conclusion: state which valuation is most defensible, what could invalidate it, and which facts require a fresh update.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mixing fiscal periods
Problem: comparing a calendar-year company’s 2025 revenue with Microsoft’s year ended June 30, 2025 as though the periods were identical. Fix: display each period-end date and use trailing twelve-month figures only when calculated consistently.

Best Value
Treating EBITDA as cash flow
Problem: ignoring the capex required to maintain or expand infrastructure. Fix: pair EV/EBITDA with FCF, capex intensity, and asset life.
Ignoring dilution
Problem: celebrating EPS growth while diluted shares rise materially. Fix: track per-share results, SBC, and repurchases together.
Calling a low multiple a bargain
Problem: overlooking slowing growth, concentration, regulatory exposure, or a capital-intensive transition. Fix: require a durability explanation and test weaker-margin and lower-growth cases.

What a finished comparison should tell the reader
A strong comparison does not merely name the lowest P/E. It shows whether the denominator is comparable, how revenue and profit have grown over several years, how much cash remains after capex, what reinvestment is buying, whether dilution offsets buybacks, and how the result changes under adverse assumptions. That evidence lets readers decide whether a premium reflects durable growth or whether a discount compensates for genuine risk.
