How to Compare MBA Programs’ Employment Reports and Salary Outcomes

MBA employment rates and salary medians are useful only when their cohorts, denominators, timing and compensation definitions line up. Here’s what to check before comparing schools.

Compare MBA employment reports only after aligning what they measure: the graduating class, timing, population, job outcome, salary unit and compensation definition. An overall salary median or employment percentage is not a universal ranking; it is a school-reported snapshot whose meaning depends on its denominator and the career mix behind it.

Start by aligning the cohort and measurement date

Record the graduating class and when outcomes were measured. A report may cover full-time hiring a set period after graduation, while another section may describe internships for the next class. Those figures answer different questions and should not be compared as if they describe the same outcome.

For example, Stanford GSB reports full-time hiring for its MBA Class of 2025 three months after graduation. Wharton’s 2025 Career Report gives full-time outcomes for the Class of 2025 and internship figures for the Class of 2026. Wharton reports a $185,000 median annual full-time salary for the Class of 2025 and a $10,416 median monthly internship salary for the Class of 2026; the internship figure is monthly pay for a different cohort, not an annual full-time salary. Read the denominator behind each employment percentage

Employment rates can refer to job seekers, survey respondents, or all graduates. Before comparing percentages, identify the group used as the denominator and distinguish offers from acceptances. Also note students not seeking employment and graduates whose outcomes were not reported.

#1 Best Overall

Wharton’s 2024 report separates students seeking employment, offers, acceptances, students not seeking employment, and students not responding. Its report says data is collected and reported in accordance with MBA Career Service and Employer Alliance standards. That statement describes Wharton’s reporting approach; it does not make every school’s headline percentage automatically comparable. Wharton’s report archive and current report provide an example of the fields to inspect.

Check coverage, nonresponse and suppressed categories

A strong response rate can make reported outcomes more representative of the relevant group, but respondents are still not necessarily the whole class. Check how many graduates are included, how many did not respond, and whether any categories are omitted or suppressed.

Wharton states that it does not list compensation for categories reported by less than 1% of students seeking employment. A missing salary category therefore does not mean the category had no graduates or that its compensation was zero; the report has chosen not to display that figure.

Compare the same kind of compensation

Use median base salary against median base salary, and check whether each amount is annual or monthly. A base-salary median is not total compensation: bonuses, equity, options, carried interest and other pay may be treated separately or excluded.

Wharton specifies that its median base salary is for one year only and excludes discretionary bonuses, options and carried interest in partnerships. Do not read its $185,000 Class of 2025 median as a guaranteed total package or as a measure of every graduate’s pay. Wharton’s report provides its compensation definition alongside the salary data.

Compare outcomes for the career you actually want

An overall median can conceal differences in the kinds of jobs graduates take. Compare industry and function distributions as well as their corresponding salaries; use location and work-authorization information when reported and relevant to your plans. A school with more graduates entering a high-paying field may have a higher overall median even if the figures within your target function tell a different story.

Wharton reports salary and graduate shares by industry and function, as well as employment location information. Stanford’s Class of 2025 page also reports that 16% of the class pursued their own ventures, illustrating why employment outcomes may include paths that do not fit neatly into a conventional salary comparison. Read each school’s own categories rather than assuming labels are identical.

Use several years for context, not a shortcut to a ranking

A single graduating class reflects that cohort’s hiring conditions. Historical reports can help show whether outcomes have moved over time, but only if cohorts, categories and definitions remain sufficiently consistent. Wharton’s archive lists reports from 1999 through 2024 and links its 2025 report. Review the archive and individual reports before treating a sequence as a like-for-like trend.

Schools publish these figures, and the reported results should be understood as school-reported outcomes rather than independent verification of each graduate’s result. Differences in definitions or coverage can make apparently precise year-to-year comparisons misleading.

Keep placement and salary separate from return on investment

Employment reports show selected career and pay outcomes; they do not by themselves calculate whether an MBA is financially worthwhile for a particular person. A personal ROI assessment also depends on tuition, living costs, foregone earnings, financing costs, location, career goals and uncertainty in reported outcomes. Treat the report as one input to that decision, not as a personalized forecast.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Cohort and timing: graduating class, full-time versus internship, and measurement point after graduation.
  • Population and denominator: all graduates, job seekers or respondents; identify nonrespondents and students not seeking work.
  • Outcome: offers and acceptances are different measures; note the denominator used for each rate.
  • Coverage: response rate, excluded or suppressed categories, and report definitions.
  • Pay measure: median base salary versus total compensation, annual versus monthly units, and treatment of bonuses, equity and other pay.
  • Career fit: industry, function, location and work authorization where reported.
  • Trend consistency: compare multiple years only after checking that category definitions and methods remain comparable.

For a quick reality check on headline figures, Stanford reports that 90% of its Class of 2025 job seekers secured offers within three months of graduation and 81% accepted an offer. These are distinct outcomes for job seekers, not percentages of all graduates. They should not be ranked directly against a Wharton salary figure or treated as a school-versus-school comparison: the schools report different measures and use their own report definitions. Stanford’s report page and Wharton’s report are the primary sources for those school-specific figures.
