The outcome depends on local rules, plant choice, climate, soil, establishment watering and the care you can realistically provide.
What changes when you replace nature-strip lawn with a garden?
A nature strip (also called a verge) is the strip between a property and the road or kerb. It may be public land, and the council’s rules determine what residents can plant or change. The comparison is not simply “thirsty lawn versus effortless garden”: each option has different water needs, tasks and habitat value.

Nature strip garden vs lawn: water use
A planting designed with species suited to local conditions may need less routine watering than a lawn, but “native” by itself does not guarantee low water use. Sun and shade, soil, exposure, plant selection, establishment and watering habits all affect demand. The ACT Government advises using only as much water as plants need (ACT Government nature-strip guidance).

There is no defensible universal percentage for water saved by replacing a nature-strip lawn. A 2021 Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub study of 22 self-nominated verge gardens in Perth found that two-thirds received regular summer watering. It did not measure water volumes or compare the gardens with lawns, so it cannot establish which used less water (Perth verge-garden study, February 2021).

Nature strip garden vs lawn: maintenance
Replacing turf can reduce mowing, edging and other lawn-specific tasks, but garden care is not maintenance-free. Garden beds may require weeding, pruning, watering while plants establish or during dry periods, and replenishing mulch. The Perth study describes participants shifting from regular lawn care to less regular garden-bed tasks; it does not establish a universal reduction in total hours.
YourHome lists mowing, weeding, edging and fertilising among lawn tasks, while council guidance notes that appropriate planting can reduce mowing and maintenance needs. The practical benefit is often less frequent mowing, not the elimination of work.

Nature strip garden vs lawn: wildlife benefits
A diverse planting with flowering plants and varied structure can offer food and shelter that a closely mown grass strip provides in limited amounts. A University of Melbourne study reported that, in Merri-bek, Melbourne, native habitat gardens were associated with seven times higher insect abundance and approximately double the species richness of conventional grass-covered nature strips. Bees showed the strongest response and were associated with flower abundance and plant diversity. These are results from the study’s setting, not guaranteed outcomes for every verge or planting design (University of Melbourne, September 2026).
As lead author and University of Melbourne researcher Dr Philippa Bell put it: “Like us, insects need food and shelter to survive and thrive. Traditional lawn nature strips offer little in the way of shelter and frequently mown lawns rarely allow plants to flower.”

How to choose and plant for your nature strip
- Check your council’s rules first. Requirements differ by area and may cover permits, plant height, sightlines, access, bins, street trees and underground services. Darebin requires a planting permit; Camden publishes its own nature-strip garden requirements. Check the current rules for your council before digging or planting (City of Darebin: Nature strip planting; Camden Council: Nature Strip Gardens information sheet, 2026).
- Match plants to the actual site. Consider sun or shade, soil, heat and exposure, then choose plants appropriate to those conditions. Where available and suitable, locally indigenous species are a stronger choice than a generic “native” label: Darebin says local indigenous plants are better adapted to local conditions, need less maintenance and support local wildlife. Avoid environmental weeds.
- Decide whether you want a garden bed or a mown look. For a lawn-like appearance with different ecology, Monash identifies weeping grass (Microlaena stipoides) as an indigenous, drought-tolerant lawn alternative that can be mown once established and provides wildlife habitat. Confirm its local suitability and whether your council permits it (City of Monash: Options for modifying a nature strip).
- Keep the surface permeable. ACT guidance links hardy, low-growing plants with water infiltration. Monash warns that impermeable surfaces can reduce absorption and worsen runoff and heat; hard paving or synthetic turf may also be restricted by local rules. Check before installing either.
- Plan for establishment and ongoing care. Allow for watering as plants establish, and for weeding, pruning and periodic mulch replenishment. Choose a planting style that fits the time and water you can provide.
Which option fits your priorities?
| Priority | What the evidence supports | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Less mowing | Appropriate plants can reduce mowing and lawn-specific tasks. | Garden beds still need care, and total hours saved are not established for every site. |
| Lower water use | Locally suitable plants can be selected for local conditions. | No exact nature-strip water saving is established; establishment and summer watering matter. |
| More wildlife habitat | Diverse flowering habitat gardens were associated with higher insect abundance and species richness in the Merri-bek study. | Results vary with location and planting; the study’s reported effect sizes are not a universal guarantee. |
| A mown appearance | Weeping grass is a council-documented lawn-like option in Monash. | Check that it suits your locality and is permitted by your council. |

The water-use evidence cited here includes a 2021 study of 22 self-nominated verge gardens in Perth, which did not quantify garden water use or compare it with lawn. The wildlife figures come from a September 2026 University of Melbourne report on a study in Merri-bek, Melbourne; neither finding should be treated as a national measurement. Government and council guidance describes local planting considerations and requirements, which can differ between jurisdictions.
