Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Compare a MacBook Pro and a Windows laptop by running the same workload under the same conditions—not by lining up two headline battery-hour claims. Match screen luminance, network and power settings, prepare both systems equally, and repeat each test. Report browsing, video, streaming, or mixed-use results separately: each runtime describes only the workload and setup that produced it.
Why battery-life figures are hard to compare
Battery runtime changes with what a laptop is doing. Full-screen playback of a local video, for example, can use less power than interactive browsing because the computer does not need to maintain the same network activity and background work. Streaming adds a network connection; mixed productivity involves a different combination of apps and activity. A result from one workload cannot fairly stand in for another.

Manufacturer estimates also reflect particular test setups. Microsoft Surface disclosures, for instance, describe claims based on different combinations of mixed active use, Modern Standby, web browsing, and local video playback. Treat those as distinct tests, not directly comparable rankings. Check each claim’s workload, brightness, wireless state, software version, configuration, and whether standby time is included. Microsoft’s Surface test disclosures include examples from different dates and settings; the test conditions matter as much as the stated hours.

1. Pick the workload you actually care about
For general mobile work, choose a repeatable browsing or mixed-productivity routine. If you mostly watch video, test video playback separately. Do not compare one laptop’s local-video runtime with another’s browsing runtime. Microsoft’s Windows guidance distinguishes local video playback from connected, interactive use because the former minimizes activity from software and devices not needed for playback. Microsoft’s Windows battery measurement guidance explains the controlled measurement approach.

2. Match screen luminance, not slider percentages
Set each display to the same measured luminance. A brightness slider at 50% on one screen does not establish that it is as bright as another screen at 50%. Microsoft Learn describes 150 nits as a widely used baseline for comparability; another target is reasonable if it is disclosed and used consistently. Disable adaptive brightness for a repeatable lab-style test, or leave it enabled on both laptops if the goal is to reflect default real-world use, and state which choice you made. Microsoft’s measurement guidance recommends recording the brightness method and relevant display settings.
A luminance meter is optional if you want to recreate a controlled comparison; it is not a prerequisite for ordinary buyers. Microsoft lists colorimeters capable of measuring display luminance, including the Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro. See the measurement guidance and equipment notes.

3. Align or record display differences
Where practical, set refresh rates consistently and keep HDR and keyboard backlighting aligned. Record panel technology, display size, refresh rate, HDR state, and automatic-brightness behavior. Some differences cannot be eliminated between models, but documenting them helps readers understand the comparison. Microsoft advises keeping refresh rates consistent or recording them.

For a connected-use test, leave internet access enabled and use the same Wi-Fi conditions. Record each laptop’s power mode, Bluetooth and cellular state, keyboard backlight, volume, ambient temperature, and placement. Network state and power policy can affect runtime, so an offline test on one machine should not be compared with a Wi-Fi test on the other.

5. Prepare both systems before the first run
Install operating-system, driver, firmware, and app updates first. Then allow background maintenance, synchronization, antivirus scans, and indexing to finish. Keep software and settings unchanged between repeated runs. Otherwise, one laptop’s update or scan could consume energy that has nothing to do with the intended workload.
6. Repeat the test and show the variation
Run the same number of trials on each laptop. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance recommends at least three runs within a week and sets a target coefficient of variation below 5% for its measurement workflow. Those are Microsoft’s stated targets, not a universal standard. Report the number of runs and the variability, and say whether runtime came from a complete battery rundown or an extrapolation from a shorter battery window.

What to include in a useful comparison
A concise test record lets readers judge whether the result applies to their own use. Include the following for each laptop and workload:
| What to report | Details |
|---|---|
| Exact device | Model, processor, memory, storage, display size and type, refresh rate, and battery configuration |
| Workload | Browsing, streaming, local video, mixed productivity, or another specifically named task |
| Display | Measured luminance, adaptive-brightness state, refresh rate, HDR state, and keyboard lighting |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi conditions, whether internet access was enabled, and Bluetooth or cellular state |
| Power and software | Power mode, operating-system and app versions, and update or background-activity status |
| Measurement | Starting and ending battery levels, full rundown or extrapolation, number of runs, and variability |
How to interpret the result
Keep separate results for browsing, streaming, local video, and mixed productivity rather than collapsing unlike tests into one battery-life score. A runtime is evidence about the tested configuration and workload, not a guaranteed prediction for every owner. Independent results can also use different procedures: RTINGS says its battery tests are run once and that its results are best read as standardized model comparisons, not precise estimates for every browsing or gaming workload. RTINGS explains its battery-test approach and limitations.
There is no basis here for claiming that MacBook Pro laptops categorically last longer—or less long—than Windows laptops. A meaningful model-to-model conclusion requires the exact configurations and comparable workload conditions. Microsoft Surface examples illustrate the importance of retaining the test description: its January 2025 web-browsing examples used 150 nits and Wi-Fi, while the Surface Laptop 6 for Business mixed active-use example was conducted in February 2024 using browsing across eight websites, productivity apps, idle applications, 150-nit brightness, and Wi-Fi. These are not equivalent to continuous video playback or to each other. Microsoft’s Surface disclosures provide the model-specific descriptions.
