When scientists call the Solar System “unstable,” they do not mean that the planets are about to fly apart. They mean that gravity can slowly change planetary orbits, and that over very long periods some possible paths could lead to close encounters or collisions. The motion is also chaotic: tiny differences in starting conditions can eventually make precise predictions diverge. Chaos limits long-range certainty; it is not a countdown to catastrophe.
What “unstable” means—and what it does not
Planets continually tug on one another through gravity, so their orbits are not perfectly fixed. Over time, those interactions can alter an orbit’s shape or orientation. In the most consequential possible cases, an orbit may change enough to permit a close encounter or collision.

In this context, “unstable” describes possible physical changes in the system’s future. “Chaotic” describes a limit on predictability: small differences in the initial conditions can grow until two modeled trajectories no longer agree closely. A system can be chaotic while remaining orderly for a very long time. As a 2001 review in Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics puts it, “The solar system is not stable; it is just old!” In context, the line refers to dynamical chaos and the survival of the present system—not imminent collapse.

Why planetary orbits can change
Each planet’s motion is shaped by the gravitational pulls of the others. Resonances can reinforce orbital changes; overlapping resonances are one recognized source of chaos. Secular resonances are among the mechanisms discussed for the inner Solar System, but no single mechanism accounts for every possible instability. The same review also discusses chaotic routes by which small bodies can be delivered through the Solar System.

How predictable are the planets?
The timescale depends on what is being predicted. The 2001 review says planetary trajectories can be predicted for hundreds of thousands of years, while precise prediction becomes fundamentally harder over much longer spans. That is a broad statement about trajectories, not a guarantee of identical accuracy for every planet or observable.
A 2023 study in Physical Review X reports a Lyapunov time of about five million years for chaotic variations in the inner planets. A Lyapunov time characterizes how quickly nearby modeled paths diverge; it is not the time until an orbit becomes dangerous or a collision occurs. The same study describes the inner planets as remarkably stable over billions of years. The two findings are compatible: long-term precision can be lost without rapid physical disruption.

What long-term outcomes have been estimated?
One widely discussed scenario involves Mercury. If its orbital eccentricity grows sufficiently, it could have a close encounter with Venus or plunge into the Sun. A 2020 Nature Reviews Physics research highlight summarizes numerical simulations as estimating about a 1% chance of this Mercury-related outcome over the Sun’s remaining five billion years.
That figure is an estimated fraction of modeled trajectories, not a prediction that the event will happen, a schedule for it, or a claim that every model gives exactly the same result. It describes an extremely long-term possibility, not a near-term threat.

Do not confuse today’s Solar System with its formation
“Instability” is also used when discussing young planetary systems, where intersecting orbits can lead to collisions, inward migration, or ejection. NASA’s planetary-dynamics overview describes such behavior in young systems. For our own Solar System, NASA’s formation and evolution chapter describes a particularly turbulent interval about 50–500 million years after the Sun formed. That is an account of early formation, not evidence that the present-day planets are nearing disruption.

How to read claims about Solar System instability
- Check the timescale. A statement about millions or billions of years does not imply a hazard in the foreseeable future.
- Check what “instability” means. It might refer to altered eccentricity or inclination, a close encounter, a collision, ejection, or simply loss of predictive precision.
- Separate probability from prediction. A percentage across simulated paths is not a forecast that one specific path will occur.
- Check the scope. Findings about the inner planets, small bodies, early formation, or other planetary systems are not interchangeable.
