The cheapest advertised price is not always the cheapest fill-up. To find the best deal, search the same location and fuel grade in more than one price tool, match cash and credit conditions, check when each listing was updated, account for membership or access restrictions, and add the fuel cost of any detour. GasBuddy is useful for sorting nearby stations, AAA Fuel Price Finder adds broad coverage and route estimates, and EIA and AAA averages provide context rather than a guaranteed neighborhood price.
Use this workflow: identify the exact pump you need, compare regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel or E85 consistently, record the posted price and update age, calculate the effective cost including extra miles, then verify the winning price at the station or by phone.

What to compare before choosing a station
A meaningful comparison has more than one number. Record each candidate station’s:
- Fuel grade: regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel or E85.
- Posted cents per gallon for cash and for credit or debit, if they differ.
- Price-listing age or last-update time.
- Street address and whether the station is actually on your route.
- Membership, payment, fleet-card or warehouse-club requirements.
- Access restrictions, such as a private lot, toll road or club membership.
- Distance and driving time from your route, not just straight-line distance.
- Any verified loyalty or cash-back discount that applies to this exact purchase.
National and state averages are useful for spotting an unusual local price, but they cannot identify the least expensive pump in your neighborhood. Prices can change during the day and can differ by grade, payment method and station access.

Which tools give you the most useful local information?
| Tool | What it provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| GasBuddy | Search by city or ZIP code; roughly 50 nearby stations can be sorted by price, distance, or a combination of distance and price. Fuel-type and payment-mode filters expose cash prices. | Crowd-sourced listings can be stale. Costco and Sam’s Club may disappear when filters are active, so clear filters and inspect the map when necessary. |
| AAA Fuel Price Finder | A finder covering more than 100,000 stations, with directions and trip fuel-cost estimates. | Its daily averages and estimates are context, not a promise that a particular local pump has that price. |
| U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) | A weekly, tax-included benchmark for comparing broad market conditions. | It does not identify the cheapest station on a specific street or route. |
| Waze and similar navigation apps | Route-aware station locations and, where available, community-reported prices. | Community reports may be out of date, so confirm a large apparent saving. |
Using two local finders is more reliable than relying on a single list. Search the same city, ZIP code or route in GasBuddy and AAA, then use a navigation app to check whether the station adds a meaningful detour.
Step-by-step method for finding the lowest effective cost
1. Define the purchase precisely
Start with the amount and grade you actually need. If your vehicle requires premium, a regular-gas listing is irrelevant even when it looks dramatically cheaper. Select diesel or E85 only when your vehicle is designed for it. Decide whether you will pay cash, debit or credit; a cash-only price cannot be compared directly with a credit price.
Enter the same city, ZIP code or planned route in both local search tools. Keep the search time visible in your notes because a result from the morning may no longer represent the pump price in the afternoon.
2. Search GasBuddy and sort for the decision you are making
GasBuddy’s results can be sorted by price, distance, or distance and price. Sorting only by price answers the narrow question of which listing is lowest; sorting by distance shows the practical options near you. A combined sort helps produce a shortlist, but you still need to calculate the detour for the final candidates.
Set the fuel type and payment mode first. GasBuddy documents a cash-price toggle, so a cash result should not be treated as a credit price. If a station you expect is missing, clear filters and inspect the map. Warehouse-club stations such as Costco and Sam’s Club may be hidden by filters, and access may require membership.
3. Run the identical search in AAA Fuel Price Finder
AAA’s finder covers more than 100,000 stations and can provide directions and trip fuel-cost estimates. Use it to cross-check the short list from GasBuddy and to see whether the station is on the route you intend to drive. When two sources disagree, do not automatically choose the lower number; compare the listing ages, fuel grade, payment condition and exact address.
4. Capture the details in a small comparison table
Write down each candidate before driving. A simple record prevents a low price for one grade or payment type from being mistaken for a low price for your purchase.

The table is a worksheet, not a claim that either example station has a particular price. Replace each cell with the current information shown for your location.
5. Check freshness and confirm outliers
Prices submitted by users can be delayed, mistyped or left unchanged after a station updates its sign. A difference of one or two cents per gallon is often too small to justify a long diversion, and a very large difference deserves confirmation. Call the station if its phone number is available, look for the price on the roadside sign, or verify it at the pump before authorizing a fill.
When calling, ask for the exact grade and payment price. Some stations advertise a cash price on the street sign while charging more at the register for a card transaction. Ask whether the lower price requires a loyalty account, a particular app, a membership card or a limit on gallons.
6. Calculate the cost of the detour
Compare total trip cost, not just cents per gallon. Use:
effective cost = (gallons purchased × posted price) + (detour gallons × value per gallon of detour fuel) − verified discount
Estimate detour gallons as:
detour gallons = extra miles ÷ your vehicle’s realistic miles per gallon
For a conservative comparison, value the detour fuel at the candidate station’s posted price. If your route would have used fuel anyway, count only the extra miles caused by the stop. Include both directions when the station requires you to leave the route and return.

7. Apply discounts only after comparing the undiscounted prices
First determine which station is cheapest before rewards. Then subtract only a discount you have verified for this purchase, payment method and location. AAA’s fuel-price page says eligible members save at least 5 cents per gallon on every Shell fill-up through Fuel Rewards; eligibility and terms still need to be checked before relying on that saving. Do not treat an advertised reward as cash in hand when it requires enrollment, a linked payment method, a minimum purchase or a limited redemption period.

At the station, compare the pump display with the price you recorded. Confirm the grade, cash or credit column and any membership prompt. If the price is materially different, recalculate before starting the transaction. A lower sign price that is unavailable for your payment method is not a lower price for you.
How to interpret the major price sources
GasBuddy: detailed nearby listings
GasBuddy is designed for local discovery. Its city and ZIP searches can expose about 50 nearby stations and let you sort by price, distance, or both. Fuel-type and payment-mode filters help narrow results, while the cash-price toggle distinguishes a cash offer from a card offer.
That detail comes with a freshness trade-off: listings are crowd sourced and may not update immediately. Treat the time stamp as part of the price. If the cheapest entry is old and the next option is current, the apparently higher listing may be the safer choice. Clear filters when a known station is absent; Costco and Sam’s Club can be hidden by an overly narrow filter, and their access rules may make the displayed price unavailable to you.
AAA Fuel Price Finder: coverage and route context
AAA’s finder covers more than 100,000 stations and adds directions and trip fuel-cost estimates. Its methodology page states:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Every day up to 120,000 stations are surveyed in cooperation with WEX, Inc.for unmatched statistical reliability.”
The survey scale supports broad daily averages, but an average is not a guarantee for an individual pump. Use the finder to cross-check a local listing and to understand the driving cost of reaching it.

EIA: a weekly benchmark
The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes a weekly, tax-included benchmark. For the week of 2026-10-12, U.S. all-grade gasoline averaged $4.471 per gallon. That figure is a national reference for that week, not a local quote and not a forecast of what your station will charge. Use it to put a local result in context, while making the station-level decision from current local listings and the pump.
AAA’s current dashboard average
AAA’s dashboard reported regular gasoline at an average of $4.2988 per gallon on 2026-10-18. The date matters: this is a snapshot of the average on that day, not a guaranteed price for a particular city, station or fuel grade. It can help explain whether a local listing looks broadly high or low, but it should not replace a local search.

Navigation apps can be convenient when you are already planning a route. Waze and similar services may show stations along the route and community-reported prices. Because those reports can be out of date, use them to identify candidates, then verify the price and payment condition with a current listing, phone call or pump display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much does a detour change the result?
Suppose you need 12 gallons. Station A lists regular fuel at $4.09 and is on your route. Station B lists $4.06 but requires an eight-mile round trip. At 25 miles per gallon, the detour uses 0.32 gallon. The apparent pump saving is:
12 × ($4.09 − $4.06) = $0.36
Valuing the detour fuel at $4.06, the extra driving costs:
0.32 × $4.06 = $1.30
Before any verified reward, Station B is therefore about $0.94 more expensive overall. If the detour is only one mile, the calculation may reverse. If you are already passing the station, the extra-mile term may be zero. Use your vehicle’s normal real-world fuel economy rather than an optimistic laboratory figure, and include traffic or a toll when it materially changes the route.

Cash, credit, memberships and access restrictions
Cash versus credit
Many stations display separate cash and card prices. Compare the price for the payment method you will actually use, including any card fee or cash withdrawal cost. A cash price is not a discount you can claim after paying by credit.
Warehouse-club access
Club stations may post attractive prices but require a valid membership card. If a listing is visible only after clearing a filter, confirm that you can enter and pay there. A station behind a membership gate is not a usable alternative for a nonmember, regardless of its headline price.
Loyalty and payment-linked rewards
Rewards can change the ranking only after their conditions are verified. Check the eligible station, fuel grade, payment method, enrollment requirement, redemption limit and expiration date. Subtract the reward from the gallons you will buy; do not subtract it from the entire trip cost or assume it covers detour fuel unless the program says so.

Roadside and access costs
A station on a toll road, inside a restricted facility or reachable only through a paid parking area may add costs that are invisible in a cents-per-gallon list. Add those costs to the effective-cost calculation or exclude the station as inaccessible.
What to do when apps disagree
- Confirm that both results use the same grade.
- Confirm cash versus credit or debit.
- Check whether one listing is a club or member price.
- Compare the update time and address.
- Open the map and verify that both pins represent the same station.
- Call or inspect the roadside sign when the difference is large.
- Use the current pump price as the final authority before filling.
Do not average conflicting app prices. A mean of two stale numbers is still stale. Choose the listing with the clearest conditions and most recent confirmation, even when it is not the lowest number shown in an older report.
A repeatable routine for regular drivers
Before leaving
- Note your fuel grade, payment method and approximate gallons needed.
- Search the same ZIP code or route in GasBuddy and AAA.
- Clear filters if expected stations are missing.
- Shortlist two or three stations with current-looking prices.
- Calculate each station’s effective cost, including detour miles and verified rewards.
During the trip
- Use route directions to avoid turning a short detour into a longer one.
- Recheck a low listing if traffic, construction or a route change adds miles.
- At the station, verify the pump’s grade and payment price before authorizing fuel.
After the purchase
- Record the final price and whether it was cash, credit or a member price.
- Note any reward actually applied, rather than the reward advertised.
- Use the result as a local reference for your next trip, while remembering that prices can change during the day.
Common mistakes that make a cheap listing expensive
- Comparing different grades: A premium price cannot be judged against regular.
- Mixing payment prices: Cash and credit columns may differ by several cents.
- Ignoring update age: A stale crowd report can be lower than the current pump.
- Sorting only by price: The first result may require a costly detour.
- Forgetting round-trip miles: Count the distance away from and back to your route.
- Assuming membership: Club prices may not be available to every driver.
- Using averages as local quotes: EIA and AAA averages describe broad conditions, not a specific pump.
- Counting an unverified reward: A promotion may require eligibility or a particular payment path.
- Failing to confirm a large gap: An unusual difference can indicate a stale or incorrectly entered listing.
Decision rule
Choose the station with the lowest verified effective cost for your actual grade and payment method. If two options are within a few cents after detour fuel, choose the one with the newer confirmation and easier access. If one station is materially cheaper even after adding the detour, follow the route only when the extra time, tolls and access conditions are acceptable. This approach turns a headline price into the amount you really spend to complete the fill-up.
