How to Compare IT Companies Using Quarterly Results, Margins and Deal Wins

The most reliable comparison does not crown the company with the fastest quarterly growth or the biggest contract announcement. It separates six questions: how fast revenue is growing, how profitable that revenue is, whether new demand is arriving, how much of that demand is contracted for future periods, whether management delivers against its guidance, and whether earnings turn into cash. Build the comparison on the same fiscal-period, currency, accounting and consolidation basis, then read the metrics together.

Start by normalizing every company’s reporting basis

A comparison can be wrong before any arithmetic if the underlying periods and definitions differ. Create a source sheet for each company and record the fiscal-quarter end date, reporting currency, whether growth is reported or constant-currency, whether it is organic or includes acquisitions, and whether each figure is consolidated or segment-level.

Match fiscal periods, not just quarter labels

“Q4” is not automatically the same three-month period for every issuer. One company may end its fiscal quarter in June while another reports a calendar quarter ending in March. Put the exact end date beside every number and label any mismatch. A seasonal business can look stronger or weaker simply because its quarter captures a different selling period.

Separate reported, constant-currency and organic growth

Reported growth includes foreign-exchange movements and acquired revenue. Constant-currency growth attempts to remove exchange-rate effects. Organic growth generally excludes acquisitions, although the exact definition is company-specific. Keep the three measures in separate columns rather than selecting whichever produces the most favorable ranking.

Keep consolidated and segment data distinct

A segment’s margin or book-to-bill can move sharply while the consolidated company appears stable. Do not compare a business segment at one company with total-company results at another. Record the scope beside each metric and preserve the company’s stated definition.

Assess revenue quality before celebrating growth

Collect year-over-year growth, sequential growth and the revenue mix. Growth tells you what happened; mix helps explain whether it is durable.

Use both year-over-year and sequential changes

Year-over-year growth controls for much of the normal seasonal pattern, while sequential growth shows the latest momentum. A simple calculation is (current-period revenue − prior-period revenue) ÷ prior-period revenue. Cite the period and basis in the same row so that reported and constant-currency figures are not mixed.

Break revenue into economically different streams

  • Products versus services: Product shipments can be lumpy, while managed services may be recognized over a contract term.
  • Subscription versus project work: Subscription revenue is usually more recurring; project revenue depends more on new starts and completion timing.
  • Geography: Regional demand and currency exposure can produce different growth rates inside one company.
  • Acquisition contribution: Acquired sales can raise reported growth without proving that the legacy business is accelerating.

Example: growth and orders answer different questions

Cisco’s Q4 FY2026 release reported $17.3 billion of revenue, up 18% year over year. The same release disclosed product orders up 35% year over year and $4 billion of artificial-intelligence-infrastructure orders during the quarter, alongside GAAP and non-GAAP operating-margin figures. Revenue describes sales recognized in that quarter; orders describe demand entering the pipeline. Keep those observations separate rather than treating the order increase as additional Q4 revenue.

Compare margins only on a like-for-like basis

Margin comparisons are meaningful only when the numerator, denominator, accounting basis and scope match. Record gross margin and operating margin, their direction from the prior period, and the items that caused the change.

Do not mix GAAP and non-GAAP

Use GAAP with GAAP and non-GAAP with non-GAAP. Non-GAAP operating income may exclude stock compensation, amortization, restructuring or other items. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission noted in 2025 that companies can calculate similarly titled non-GAAP measures differently. A non-GAAP margin is therefore not interchangeable with another company’s non-GAAP margin unless the exclusions have been reviewed.

Calculate and explain the margin

Operating margin is operating income ÷ revenue. Alongside the percentage, keep a bridge of restructuring, acquisition costs, foreign exchange, utilization, wage inflation and business mix. A one-quarter change without that bridge is a description, not an explanation.

Read acquisition effects in the guidance

ServiceNow said an acquisition was expected to create approximately a 75-basis-point FY2026 operating-margin headwind and approximately a 125-basis-point headwind in Q2 2026. That disclosure illustrates why a lower reported margin may reflect purchase-accounting or integration effects rather than deterioration in the underlying delivery model. Label the estimate as management’s stated impact and distinguish it from an observed result.

Use basis-point movement

One basis point equals 0.01 percentage point. Expressing a change in basis points prevents confusion between, for example, a margin moving from 20% to 19% (a 100-basis-point decline) and a 1% relative decline in operating income.

Treat deal wins as leading indicators, not revenue

Bookings, orders, total contract value (TCV) and large-deal announcements show demand entering the commercial funnel. They do not, by themselves, show when revenue will be recognized, how profitable the work will be, or how much cash it will generate.

Capture the definition and size of each deal metric

Record total bookings, large-deal bookings, TCV, product orders and any company-defined order measure in separate rows. Note whether the figure is gross contract value, annualized value, or an amount expected to be recognized as revenue. Also record contract duration, recurring content, customer concentration and implementation conditions when disclosed.

Example: Wipro’s bookings and margin

Wipro reported total bookings of $3,455 million and large-deal bookings of $1,440 million in Q4 FY2026, while reporting an IT-services operating margin of 17.3%. The booking figures indicate the scale of signed demand; the margin indicates profitability for the reported IT-services business. Neither number proves that all of those bookings will become the next quarter’s revenue at a 17.3% margin.

Why a large contract may take time to reach revenue

Recognition can be delayed by implementation milestones, customer acceptance, phased deployment, regulatory approvals, cancellation clauses or the contract’s multi-year term. A recurring contract may contribute a modest amount each quarter for years. Ask management how much is expected to start within the next 12 months and how much is contingent on delivery milestones.

Test conversion with book-to-bill and segment data

Book-to-bill compares bookings with revenue over a stated period, using the issuer’s definition. A ratio above 1.0x generally means bookings exceeded recognized revenue for that period; below 1.0x means the reverse. It is a directional indicator, not a guarantee of future growth.

Use segment book-to-bill to find divergence

DXC Technology reported FY2026 segment book-to-bill of 1.10x for Consulting and Engineering Services, 0.94x for Global Infrastructure Services and 0.76x for Insurance. The corresponding segment margins were 10.3%, 6.8% and 10.1%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DXC FY2026 segment Book-to-bill Segment margin How to read it
Consulting and Engineering Services 1.10x 10.3% Bookings exceeded recognized revenue; examine backlog conversion and delivery capacity.
Global Infrastructure Services 0.94x 6.8% Bookings were below recognized revenue; investigate whether the gap is seasonal or persistent.
Insurance 0.76x 10.1% Bookings trailed revenue materially; assess renewal timing, demand and contract run-off.

This example shows why consolidated stability can conceal different demand trajectories. Compare each segment with its own prior periods and with the company’s stated scope before drawing a ranking.

Measure forward visibility

Current-quarter revenue is backward-looking. Visibility metrics indicate how much future revenue is already contracted or likely to recur.

Backlog and remaining performance obligations

Backlog represents contracted work not yet recognized, but definitions vary. Check the expected timing, cancellation rights and whether hardware, pass-through costs or subcontractor work are included. A large backlog with distant delivery dates provides less near-term visibility than a smaller backlog scheduled for the next two quarters.

Current remaining performance obligations and recurring revenue

cRPO, subscription revenue and renewal or retention rates can show the portion expected to recur or be recognized soon. ServiceNow reported cRPO growth and provided subscription-revenue guidance; capture both the growth rate and the period covered by the guidance. Do not compare cRPO with another company’s total backlog without checking the definitions.

Contract duration and concentration

Longer contracts can improve planning but may include pricing concessions or termination provisions. Ask whether one customer or a small group accounts for a large share of bookings. Concentrated wins can create impressive headline growth and substantial downside if a project is delayed.

Use disclosed TCV and bookings together

HCLTech’s investor materials highlight bookings and total contract value from new deal wins. TCV helps describe the multi-period economic size of a win, while bookings may reflect the company’s recognition convention. Record the two separately and look for the expected revenue ramp.

Score execution through guidance and estimates

Management guidance is a forecast that can be tested. At each quarter, save the prior guidance range, the actual result and the new outlook.

Build a guidance-accuracy log

  1. Copy the original revenue, margin and cash-flow guidance, including the date and whether it was reported or constant-currency.
  2. Record the midpoint as well as the range.
  3. Enter the actual result using the same definition.
  4. Calculate the variance from the midpoint and mark whether the company raised, maintained or cut its outlook.
  5. Note the stated cause of any variance, such as demand timing, foreign exchange, utilization or an acquisition.

Repeated beats can indicate conservative forecasting, while repeated misses may indicate execution or visibility problems. A single beat or miss is not enough to establish a pattern.

Check whether earnings become cash

Operating cash flow tests earnings quality because it captures collections, working-capital movements and cash costs. Compare operating cash flow with net income and revenue, and inspect unusual changes in receivables, payables and contract assets.

Cash-conversion calculations

Cash conversion relative to earnings is operating cash flow ÷ net income. Operating-cash-flow margin is operating cash flow ÷ revenue. Use the same period and currency for both numerator and denominator. A ratio above 100% can reflect strong collections or favorable working-capital timing; a ratio below 100% can reflect investment in receivables or other timing effects.

Wipro example

Wipro reported Q4 FY2026 operating cash flow equal to 90.1% of net income and FY2026 operating cash flow equal to 112.6% of net income. The quarterly and full-year figures answer different questions: one captures a three-month cash cycle, while the other smooths some timing effects. Preserve both rather than replacing the annual result with the latest quarter.

Use a six-axis comparison scorecard

Axis Collect Interpretation
Growth Year-over-year and sequential revenue; reported, constant-currency and organic growth Separate demand from foreign exchange, acquisitions and timing.
Margin Gross and operating margin; GAAP/non-GAAP label; bridge items Compare like with like and explain one-offs.
Deal quality Total bookings, large-deal bookings, TCV, orders and book-to-bill Assess size, duration, recurring content, concentration and conversion.
Visibility Backlog, cRPO, renewal or retention measures and contract duration Higher visibility can offset slower current-quarter growth.
Execution Guidance versus actual results and estimate revisions Repeated beats or misses reveal forecasting quality.
Cash quality Operating cash flow, free-cash-flow margin and cash conversion Test whether reported earnings become cash.

Score each axis only after preserving the definitions. A simple ordinal scale such as 1 to 5 is useful for organizing judgment, but the score is not an objective valuation model. Write a one-sentence rationale and the source period beside every score.

A practical quarterly workflow

  1. Set the comparison date: List each fiscal-quarter end and flag mismatches.
  2. Normalize units: Convert currencies only when necessary, disclose the conversion date or rate, and retain the original reported amount.
  3. Fill the revenue block: Enter total revenue, year-over-year growth, sequential growth and the product, service, subscription, project, geographic and acquisition mix.
  4. Fill the margin block: Enter GAAP gross and operating margins, then the comparable non-GAAP figures in separate columns.
  5. Document the bridge: Add restructuring, acquisition, foreign-exchange, utilization and mix effects.
  6. Fill the demand block: Enter bookings, large-deal bookings, orders, TCV and book-to-bill with definitions and durations.
  7. Test visibility: Add backlog, cRPO, recurring revenue and renewal or retention measures, including expected recognition timing.
  8. Test execution: Compare the previous guidance range with actual revenue, margin and cash flow.
  9. Test cash quality: Calculate operating-cash-flow margin and operating cash flow divided by net income, then inspect working-capital movements.
  10. Write the conclusion: State which company leads on each axis, what evidence supports that lead and which unresolved risk could change it.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Ranking on revenue growth alone

Correct it by adding mix, margin, bookings, visibility and cash. Fast growth funded by low-margin projects is a different proposition from slower recurring growth with strong cash conversion.

Calling a contract announcement revenue

Correct it by recording the booking separately, then finding the expected start date, duration, recurring share and revenue-recognition pattern.

Comparing a GAAP margin with a non-GAAP margin

Correct it by creating separate columns and listing exclusions. If the reconciliation is unavailable, mark the comparison as not established rather than estimating.

Ignoring foreign exchange and acquisitions

Correct it by showing reported, constant-currency and organic growth side by side and explaining which one management emphasizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a consolidated book-to-bill to explain a segment

Correct it by matching the scope and period. Segment data can reveal demand changes that a company-wide ratio hides.

Assuming a backlog is risk-free

Correct it by checking cancellation rights, customer concentration, delivery milestones, margin assumptions and the portion scheduled for the next year.

Taking one quarter of cash flow as a permanent trend

Correct it by reviewing several quarters and the full year, then separating operating performance from working-capital timing.

How to decide which company is stronger

Use a balanced verdict rather than a single winner. The strongest current operator is usually the one whose revenue growth is supported by healthy margins, whose bookings convert into backlog and revenue, whose guidance is credible and whose cash conversion is consistent. A company with slower reported growth can still rank higher when its growth is more recurring, its visibility is better and its earnings quality is stronger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write the final comparison in this order: first state the period and basis, then identify the revenue leader, margin leader, demand leader and visibility leader, and finally explain execution and cash. If the leaders differ by axis, say so explicitly. That is more informative than forcing every metric into one composite ranking.
