To find which handheld gaming PC delivers more performance per watt, compare frame rates with measured power draw under the same game, scene, resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, power profile, software, and test duration. Calculate average FPS divided by watts, and show the raw measurements alongside the ratio. A chip’s TDP limit or a handheld’s selected power mode is not the same as measured power for the whole device.
What performance per watt tells you—and what it does not
For a gaming test, the basic efficiency calculation is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Performance per watt = average frames per second (FPS) ÷ measured power in watts (W)

If a handheld averages 60 FPS while drawing 20 W at the measurement point, that result is 3 FPS/W. But the ratio is meaningful only if the FPS and power figures describe the same run and the same test boundary. A measurement at the battery, USB-C input, or another point can produce different readings; identify which one you used.

FPS/W is a way to compare efficiency for a defined workload, not a universal score for a handheld. A result in one game, scene, or settings combination does not establish which device is most efficient across every game. It also does not replace average FPS, frame-time consistency, battery capacity, or runtime: each answers a different question.
Match the test before comparing devices
Different games and settings can change the ranking. To make a comparison useful, hold the workload constant and publish the configuration for every result. At minimum, record:

- Game title, game version, and benchmark scene or repeatable route.
- Resolution, graphics preset, upscaling and frame-generation settings, and frame cap.
- Power profile, operating system, driver, and firmware versions.
- Test duration, whether the handheld was on battery or AC, and how power was measured.
- Average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time data, and measured watts from the same run.
Test several representative games rather than treating a single result as a category-wide verdict. Review suites are not automatically comparable: publications may use different games, scenes, settings, and methods. Do not combine unrelated review numbers into one leaderboard without explaining those differences.

- Efficiency at a target frame rate: Measure how many watts each device needs to sustain the same FPS in the same workload.
- Performance at a fixed power level: Compare FPS at the same measured system-power target, where practical.
- Battery life in a particular game: Run a named game and configuration on battery and report measured runtime. This is a practical-use result, not an FPS/W score.
- Plugged-in performance: Compare performance on AC and state the power profile and test conditions; do not assume battery results apply.
These comparisons answer related but distinct questions. A device can be more efficient in one workload without being the better fit for a different game, target frame rate, or software configuration.
Keep power modes, measured draw, and battery life separate
A selected power mode describes a configured operating limit or profile; it does not, by itself, tell you the whole device’s measured consumption. For example, ASUS lists the ROG Ally X at 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo, with 30W available when connected to AC. Its product page also lists an 80Wh battery and a 65W USB-C AC adapter. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent evidence that the Ally X is more efficient than another handheld. ASUS ROG Ally X specifications.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Battery capacity, measured power, and runtime should be reported as separate facts. A larger battery can extend runtime without proving that the APU or whole device is more efficient. Similarly, FPS/W alone does not tell you how long a handheld will run on its battery.

In a specific test described as 15W, The Verge reported that the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Lenovo Legion Go S each produced 66 FPS, while estimated battery runtimes were about 3.9 hours and 2.3 hours, respectively. Those figures illustrate that equal FPS in a reported condition and different estimated runtimes are separate observations. They are results from that review’s particular test, not a prediction for every game or current software setup. The Verge’s MSI Claw 8 AI+ review.

Other reviews use different devices and suites. Tom’s Hardware describes a 15W mode on the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ as targeting 30 FPS and compares that model across its review suite. PC Gamer reports that its MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ led its standard handheld benchmark suite in most tests, with an exception. Neither result should be conflated with the Claw 8 AI+ test above or treated as an independently standardized ranking of all handhelds. - Select representative games. Name each game version and use a repeatable benchmark scene or route.
- Fix the settings. Use the same resolution, graphics settings, upscaling, frame generation, and frame cap for every device.
- Record software and operating conditions. Note OS, drivers, firmware, power profile, test duration, and whether the run was on battery or AC.
- Measure power consistently. Use the same measurement point and method for each device, and state whether watts mean battery-side, USB-C input, or another boundary.
- Capture multiple performance measures. Record average FPS and 1% lows or frame-time data alongside measured watts and, for battery tests, runtime.
- Calculate and show the ratio. Divide FPS by watts only for compatible, matched runs. Publish the raw FPS and watt figures so readers can check the calculation.
- Explain the tradeoffs. Note compatibility or quality differences that matter to the games and target frame rate being tested.
- Put the details with the results. Date the test and include the game build, OS, driver, firmware, power profile, and measurement method beside each table or result.
How to read a comparison without overclaiming
- Prefer matched tests over isolated numbers from different review suites.
- Check that a stated wattage is measured draw rather than just a chip limit or mode label.
- Look for average FPS and frame-time information, not only a ratio.
- Read battery capacity and measured runtime as separate measures from FPS/W.
- Treat review-suite leaders as leaders under that publication’s tests, not universal winners.
There is no portfolio-wide standardized performance-per-watt statistic in the cited sources, so a single current market-wide winner cannot be established from those reviews. ASUS also cautions that its results can vary by configuration and change as the platform and drivers mature. ASUS ROG Ally X specifications and performance notes.
