There is no single formula for a video game’s launch price. Publishers weigh the experience they expect to sell, comparable games, audience expectations, regional markets, and plans for later discounts. Rising production and operating costs can be part of the explanation for a price increase, but they do not by themselves determine what every game costs.
What determines a game’s launch price?
Steamworks’ developer guidance offers a practical checklist rather than a pricing equation. It advises developers to consider how long players may spend with a game, its replayability and multiplayer features, whether it launches in Early Access, the prices of comparable games, and future promotions. It also emphasizes market research, customer expectations, and the value players receive. Steamworks pricing documentation

In effect, a publisher is estimating what its intended audience may pay for this particular experience, then positioning it against relevant alternatives. A long campaign, multiplayer mode, or high production budget may inform that decision, but none mechanically dictates a price. Whether a game feels worth its price is ultimately a buyer’s judgment.

How to compare two games’ prices
Compare like with like: expected time to play, replayability, multiplayer offering, and the prices of genuinely similar games. Also check whether you are looking at the price for your own region and whether you are willing to wait for a promotion. More hours do not automatically make one game better value; the experience and your preferences matter too.

Why do video game prices rise?
One reason publishers cite is the cost of making games and running the business. In a 2022 GameSpot report about Microsoft’s planned move to US$70 for major first-party releases in 2023, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said the company faced an “increased cost basis” and described the change as “the cost basis of building those games and ensuring we can run the business in the right way for our customers.” Those comments explain Microsoft’s stated reasoning for that particular decision; they do not establish that costs alone cause every increase.
The European Commission’s European Media Industry Outlook (2025) also discusses rising costs for AAA development and publishing, including efforts to meet player expectations and fund substantial launch promotion. Its selected examples and estimates are evidence about the cases it examines, not a universal budget or cost figure for all games.

Prices are a business decision, not a cost-plus rule
A publisher’s expenses matter, but the final price also depends on the intended audience, competing games, regional pricing, and release plans. The available examples do not establish a reliable industry-wide average development budget or a rule mapping a game’s cost directly to its launch price.
Why can prices differ by country?
A straight conversion from US dollars or euros is not the only way to set a regional price. Steam lets developers choose prices by currency and region, with conversion approaches based on exchange rates, local purchasing power, or multiple factors—including purchasing power and the expected cost of comparable entertainment. As a result, the same game need not cost the equivalent amount in every market. Regional price differences can reflect local economic conditions as well as currency movements; they are not necessarily evidence that a publisher applied a single exchange-rate calculation.
Why are new games more expensive than older games?
A launch price is only one point in a game’s commercial life. Publishers may lower prices later to reach buyers who would not pay the initial amount, while continuing to earn sales from older titles.

Capcom’s 2025 integrated report describes its own general approach: launching games around US$60–70, then reducing prices as market value changes, in some cases to US$10 or US$5. Capcom says it aims to maximize sales and profit over five years, typically recovers development costs within one to two years, and continues earning from catalog sales. It also reports that catalog titles accounted for more than 70% of its annual unit sales. These are Capcom-specific figures and practices, not industry-wide norms.

Waiting can be a reasonable way to pay less if you do not need to play at launch, but neither the timing nor size of a future discount is guaranteed. Boston Consulting Group’s 2025 report says about 65% of surveyed gamers use tactics such as waiting for discounts. That is a survey result with the report’s scope, not a universal rate for all players or regions. Boston Consulting Group, 2025

The same report estimates that premium game prices have declined by about 1% a year in inflation-adjusted terms over the past two decades. It also discusses tiered prices, release windowing, discount timing, and subscriptions as possible ways to serve different budgets and willingness to pay. Earlier console prices were shaped in part by physical formats. A 2012 historical article from Game Developer argues that cartridge manufacturing costs helped sustain high prices in earlier console generations, while the shift to CD-ROM reduced media costs. That is historical context, not evidence of present-day prices or a current market average.
Today’s launch prices vary by game, publisher, territory, edition, and release strategy. No current universal AAA price or single cost-based formula captures those differences.
