How to Compare Handheld Gaming PC GPUs by Real-World Performance

The fastest handheld GPU is not determined by compute-unit count or a single FPS number. Compare handhelds with the same rendered resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, graphics API, frame cap, firmware and driver state, then measure sustained average FPS, 1% and 0.1% lows, and frame-time consistency on both battery and wall power. A Ryzen Z1 Extreme handheld has a higher power ceiling than a Steam Deck OLED, but that advantage can disappear in a particular game or power mode—and a higher average can feel worse when frame-time spikes are severe.

The practical method is to treat each handheld as a complete platform: GPU architecture, configurable wattage, cooling, shared memory, software and display all affect the result. The measurements below show why conditional conclusions are more useful than a universal ranking.

What “real-world GPU performance” means on a handheld

A handheld gaming PC does not run its GPU at one fixed desktop-style specification. The processor and graphics engine share a limited power budget, and that budget changes with the selected performance profile, battery charge, charger, firmware, temperature and fan behavior. The same chip can therefore produce very different frame rates in a quiet battery mode and a plugged-in high-power mode.

Real-world comparison means measuring the performance a player can sustain during a game, not quoting a theoretical peak. A useful result includes:

  • Average FPS: the broad throughput measure, useful for seeing whether a setting is near a 30, 40 or 60 FPS target.
  • 1% and 0.1% lows: the slower portions of the run that expose hitching and traversal stutter hidden by the average.
  • Frame-time behavior: the time each frame takes to render. Evenly spaced 20 ms frames feel much better than a nominally similar average interrupted by 40–110 ms spikes.
  • Sustainability: whether the result holds after the APU, cooling system and battery have reached their operating limits.

A 120 Hz screen does not make a game run at 120 FPS. The panel can refresh that often, but the GPU must still render each frame, and an integrated GPU may be limited to a lower, steadier target.

Specs that indicate potential—but cannot replace testing

Compute units and graphics architecture

Compute-unit count and graphics architecture describe the engine’s potential. In the GamersNexus specification table, the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go use RDNA3 graphics with 12 compute units and a 2.7 GHz GPU clock. The Steam Deck OLED uses RDNA2 graphics with 8 compute units and a 1.6 GHz GPU clock. Those figures suggest an advantage for the RDNA3 systems, but only when the APU is allowed enough power and the game can use the extra throughput.

Configurable power is the key variable

AMD lists the Ryzen Z1 Extreme as an 8-core, 16-thread Zen 4 processor with boost clocks up to 5.1 GHz, a default TDP of 28 W and a configurable TDP range of 9–30 W. The GamersNexus table lists the Ally and Legion Go at 9–30 W of APU power, while the Steam Deck OLED is listed at 4–15 W. A 30 W profile can deliver substantially more GPU performance than a 15 W profile, but it also consumes energy faster and places greater demands on cooling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare a 30 W plugged-in Turbo result with a 15 W battery result and call it a chip-to-chip victory. Report each power condition separately. The power ceiling is part of the product experience, not a footnote.

Battery capacity is not runtime

The same GamersNexus table lists a 50 Wh battery for Steam Deck OLED and 40 Wh for the ROG Ally. Capacity alone cannot predict play time: a larger battery may be offset by a less efficient high-power mode, a brighter or higher-resolution display, background software or a demanding game. Runtime must be measured alongside the selected wattage and game workload. Battery runtime, noise and surface temperature were not stated for every device in the measurements summarized here, so they should be recorded in a complete comparison rather than inferred from capacity.

How to run a fair handheld GPU test

Use one repeatable procedure for every device. GamersNexus used 1280×720 because that resolution was natively supported by both the Ally and Deck, updated firmware and software with first-party tools, and discarded unusually high first passes that were not representative after thermal and power limits engaged.

  1. Prepare the software. Update the operating system, GPU driver, game and handheld firmware using the device’s first-party update path. Record the exact versions and date.
  2. Choose a common output and render resolution. Start with 1280×720 when every device supports it. If a panel uses another native resolution, also test a practical 720p or 800p mode and label the output clearly.
  3. Lock the graphics workload. Use the same preset, texture quality, shadows, ray-tracing setting, field of view and frame cap. Do not leave an automatic quality mode active on one device and a fixed preset on another.
  4. Match the upscaler. Record whether the game is rendering natively or using FSR, RSR or another scaler, including the mode such as Quality or Balanced. Upscaling can change GPU load dramatically.
  5. Keep the graphics API consistent. Use the same Vulkan or DirectX mode where the game offers a choice. If a device requires a different API for stability, report that as a compatibility difference rather than mixing the results silently.
  6. Control power input. Run a battery test at a defined charge level and a separate wall-power test with the same performance profile. Label the device’s wattage setting, such as a battery Performance mode or a plugged-in 30 W/Turbo mode.
  7. Use a repeatable route. Prefer a built-in benchmark or a saved route through the same level. Let the device warm up, discard the first pass if it is unusually high, and run enough passes to reveal repeatable stutter.
  8. Capture more than the average. Save average FPS, 1% and 0.1% lows and a frame-time plot. Note fan behavior, noise, surface temperature, battery state and whether the clocks or wattage changed during the run.

Which metrics should decide the comparison?

Metric What it tells you How to use it
Average FPS Overall rendering throughput Check whether the system can sustain your target, but do not treat it as a complete verdict.
1% low Performance during slower sections Compare it with the average to identify frequent dips during combat or traversal.
0.1% low The worst repeatable portion of the run Use it to expose severe hitching that a rounded average hides.
Frame-time plot Whether frames arrive evenly Look for long spikes, repeated oscillation and pauses rather than one isolated outlier.
Power draw and profile The energy required for the result Separate battery and charger measurements; a faster result at twice the wattage is not an efficiency win.
Runtime, temperature and noise Whether the performance is practical to carry and play Record them beside FPS. A short-lived, loud mode may be unsuitable for portable use.

What controlled game results actually show

The following results come from tests with fixed settings and should be read as examples of behavior, not as a permanent ranking. Different driver, firmware and game versions can move the numbers.

Game and settings Device Average result Low or frame-time result
Red Dead Redemption 2, 1280×720, Vulkan Steam Deck LCD 49.7 FPS 0.1% low of 26 FPS
Red Dead Redemption 2, 1280×720, Vulkan Steam Deck OLED 53 FPS, about 7% above the LCD result Not stated in the cited result
Red Dead Redemption 2, 1280×720, Vulkan Ryzen Z1 Extreme handheld Effectively tied with Steam Deck OLED in the retest Not stated in the cited result
Dying Light 2, 1280×720, Low, FSR Quality Steam Deck OLED 45.8 FPS Not stated in the cited result
Dying Light 2, 1280×720, Low, FSR Quality ROG Ally Z1 Extreme 48 FPS Much worse lows; frame-time spikes approached 40–110 ms
Cyberpunk 2077, 1280×720, Low, FSR 2.1 Quality Steam Deck LCD 44 FPS Not stated in the cited result
Cyberpunk 2077, 1280×720, Low, FSR 2.1 Quality Steam Deck OLED 44.6 FPS Not stated in the cited result
Resident Evil 4, 1280×720 Steam Deck OLED 28.6 FPS Stable lows in the cited comparison
Resident Evil 4, 1280×720 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme 30.4 FPS Stable lows in the cited comparison

These results illustrate three important points. First, the larger power envelope does not guarantee a lead in every title: the Z1 Extreme system was effectively tied with Steam Deck OLED in the Red Dead Redemption 2 retest. Second, a small average advantage can be undermined by poor pacing, as in Dying Light 2 on the Ally. Third, some games show a modest but usable advantage for the higher-power system while maintaining stable lows, as in Resident Evil 4.

Additional measurements at other power and resolution settings

Tom’s Hardware measured the ROG Ally at 720p with 47 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 40 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, 50 FPS in Borderlands 3 and 54 FPS in Forza Horizon 5. Its plugged-in Turbo mode raised several results substantially. Those figures are useful only with their associated profile; they should not be merged with a battery-mode chart.

Tom’s Guide measured the Lenovo Legion Go at 1080p with 23 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, 41 FPS in Dirt 5 and 23 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. In Doom Eternal, the device produced 15–20 FPS at 2560×1600, 30–45 FPS at 1920×1200 with a 30 W TDP, and results in the mid-70s at 1280×800. The large spread comes primarily from rendered-pixel count and power setting, demonstrating why resolution must be printed next to every FPS number.

Why resolution and upscaling can reverse the ranking

Rendering at 1080p requires substantially more pixel work than 720p; 1600p is a still heavier load. An integrated GPU can look competitive at 720p yet fall sharply at a panel’s maximum resolution. The Legion Go measurements show this directly: Doom Eternal moved from 15–20 FPS at 2560×1600 to 30–45 FPS at 1920×1200 with a 30 W setting, then to the mid-70s at 1280×800.

Upscaling changes the internal render resolution while preserving a higher output resolution. FSR Quality, for example, can make a 720p-class internal workload appear on a larger output. Because every vendor and game exposes different scaling controls, write both the output resolution and scaler mode in the result title. “1080p” by itself is ambiguous when one test is native and another is upscaled from 720p.

Frame pacing matters more than a one-number win

Human perception is sensitive to irregular delivery. If most frames arrive quickly but a few take 40–110 ms, the game can hitch during camera movement or combat even when the average looks favorable. GamersNexus described the Ally’s Dying Light 2 result this way: its average may have been higher at 48 FPS, but the lows were terrible.

Use a frame-time graph to distinguish a stable cap from oscillation. A device that holds a consistent 30 or 40 FPS can feel smoother than one that swings between 25 and 60 FPS. When comparing two modes, prioritize the one whose 0.1% low and frame-time trace remain acceptable after the warm-up period.

Software, memory and driver variables

Handheld APUs use shared system memory rather than a separate desktop graphics-memory pool. Memory speed and allocation, operating-system overhead, shader compilation and driver maturity can all influence a run. A result from one game API is not a universal statement about another API.

Keep the driver and firmware version in the test record. If a game receives a patch, rerun both devices rather than updating only one. Avoid combining an older SteamOS or Windows result with a newer driver result and presenting the collection as a single-generation ranking.

Battery, cooling and acoustics belong in the GPU verdict

A high-wattage mode can deliver the best FPS while plugged in, but it may drain a battery quickly and increase fan noise or surface temperature. Conversely, a lower-power mode may sacrifice peak FPS yet provide a steadier session and longer play time. Measure runtime with a defined game, brightness, audio level, frame cap and power profile; otherwise “battery life” comparisons are not reproducible.

Record whether the charger is connected, the battery percentage at the start and end, fan behavior and any thermal throttling. If clocks or wattage fall after several minutes, use the sustained value rather than the launch number. The first pass can be unusually fast before temperature and power limits engage, which is why repeatable tests discard that nonrepresentative pass.

Choose the right comparison for your use case

If you mostly play plugged in

Compare the highest sustained profile each handheld can maintain, commonly around the 30 W ceiling on Z1 Extreme systems, and report noise and temperature beside FPS. Test at the display’s practical resolution rather than assuming maximum resolution is worthwhile. A higher-power profile is most useful when the game remains smooth and the cooling system can hold it.

If you play mainly on battery

Use the same battery Performance profile on every device and measure runtime as well as frame pacing. A lower-power handheld can be the better portable choice if it delivers a stable target without rapidly exhausting its battery. Capacity in watt-hours is context, not a runtime guarantee.

If you want a stable console-like experience

Prioritize 1% and 0.1% lows, frame-time graphs and a consistent frame cap. The Dying Light 2 result demonstrates why a nominal average lead is not enough. Verify that the chosen game holds its target after the device warms up.

If you play older or lighter games

Resolution may be less restrictive, so test native output as well as a lower internal resolution. The Z1 Extreme’s extra headroom may be visible, but do not assume every title scales with the additional compute units; API, engine and driver behavior still determine the outcome.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

  • Mixing resolutions: Put the rendered and output resolutions in every chart row.
  • Mixing power states: Separate battery, charger Performance and 30 W/Turbo measurements.
  • Using averages alone: Add 1% and 0.1% lows plus a frame-time plot.
  • Comparing different upscalers: Match the scaler and quality mode, or label the difference as a setting advantage.
  • Ignoring warm-up: Run repeated passes after the device reaches steady temperature.
  • Assuming a larger battery is automatically better: Pair watt-hours with measured runtime under the same workload.
  • Treating a panel refresh rate as GPU speed: Report the actual rendered FPS; refresh rate only describes the display’s capability.
  • Declaring a permanent winner from one game: Test several engines and APIs, then explain where each platform leads.

AMD’s own benchmark claims need their configuration attached

AMD Labs tested the Ryzen Z1 Extreme in an ASUS ROG Ally in April 2023 across nine selected games at low settings. The tests used 1080p output upscaled from a 720p render with Radeon Super Resolution, and AMD states that the results are configuration dependent. Those conditions can be useful for reproducing the claim, but they are not interchangeable with native 1080p, a different scaler, a later driver or a different power profile.

Bottom line

Compare handheld GPUs by sustained, matched gameplay: identical resolution and quality settings, the same scaler and API, documented firmware and drivers, separate battery and wall-power runs, and averages reported with 1%/0.1% lows and frame-time behavior. Ryzen Z1 Extreme handhelds offer the higher 9–30 W power ceiling and RDNA3 hardware, while Steam Deck OLED operates in a lower 4–15 W envelope yet can match or exceed them in particular games and deliver smoother pacing in specific modes. The meaningful winner is the handheld that meets your target frame rate consistently at a power, noise and runtime level you will actually use.
