The fairest answer to “Which is cheapest?” is not a chain-wide ranking. Build one fixed basket at nearby Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart and Aldi stores, compare identical quantities by unit price, and record the lowest price you can actually redeem after each store’s loyalty requirements. Then add channel fees, substitution risk and travel time. A single sale item can be cheapest at one chain while your complete trip costs less somewhere else.
Use a local basket, not a headline price
Grocery prices vary by store, date, inventory, package size and promotion. Kroger explicitly says prices and promotions may vary by location; some offers require a Shopper’s Card, and third-party delivery pricing can differ from in-store pricing (Kroger shopping and app information). Albertsons, Walmart and Aldi also change assortments and offers by market. A national “cheapest supermarket” claim therefore cannot predict your checkout total.

Choose one nearby location for each chain and one comparison date. Shop or check all four as close together in time as possible. Save screenshots or write down the displayed price, package size, promotion condition and whether the item is in stock. If you compare stores on different days, a sale can make the result look like a permanent price difference when it is only a timing difference.

Set up a comparable basket
Keep the list fixed
Start with the items you routinely buy, such as milk, eggs, bread, rice, chicken, produce, canned goods and coffee. A basket of 20 to 40 frequently purchased items is usually more informative than checking one advertised loss leader. Do not add an item at one store merely because it is on sale there; mark it unavailable if an equivalent cannot be found.

Match brand, grade and package
For branded goods, use the same brand, flavor, formulation and package size at every chain. For private-label comparisons, record the tier: basic, organic, cage-free, premium or another meaningful quality level. A conventional one-pound product and an organic 12-ounce product are not comparable simply because both are labeled “the store brand.”
Some Aldi products have different package sizes or no direct brand equivalent. In those cases, compare ingredients, grade, count and usable quantity rather than forcing a brand match. Keep a separate column explaining the substitution so you know whether a lower price reflects a genuinely different product.
Record both regular and redeemable prices
For every basket line, capture two numbers:
- Standard price: the shelf or online price before a loyalty discount, clipped coupon or temporary sale.
- Shopper price: the lowest amount that this shopper can obtain under clearly stated conditions, such as a free loyalty account, digital coupon, quantity minimum or advertised sale.
Do not count a discount that requires an account you will not open, a coupon you cannot clip, or a quantity you will not purchase. Write the condition beside the number. A “two for” offer may require buying two units; a personalized coupon may appear only for a logged-in account; and a fuel or points reward may reduce a later purchase rather than today’s receipt.
Kroger
Kroger’s digital weekly ad supports list building, weekly deals, personalized coupons and Shopper’s Card savings. Its digital-coupon information says coupons can be used in stores, for pickup and for delivery, but the chain also notes that local prices and promotions differ and that offers may not carry over to Instacart orders (Kroger weekly ad and digital coupons; Kroger mobile-app and shopping details). When recording a Kroger price, specify whether the figure is for an account holder, whether a coupon was clipped, and whether the source was the store, Kroger pickup or a marketplace order.
Albertsons
The Albertsons app combines item lookup, list tools, deals and coupons. Albertsons for U is free and provides personalized deals, Points and grocery or fuel rewards; clipped offers apply when the member account is used (Albertsons mobile apps; Albertsons for U FAQ). Record a clipped offer separately from the shelf price and note whether Points are an immediate discount or a future reward. If an offer is personalized, another shopper may not receive the same price.

Walmart
Walmart describes its U.S. strategy as Every Day Low Prices, intended to make ordinary prices more predictable (Walmart Every Day Low Prices). Walmart’s U.S. store policy matches an identical price advertised on Walmart.com, subject to the policy’s conditions; Walmart.com generally does not match a competitor’s price (Walmart price-match policy). When comparing Walmart, identify whether you are using the in-store shelf price, Walmart.com price, pickup price or delivery price. A website price-match rule does not make a local competitor’s advertised price relevant to your Walmart total.
Aldi
The official Aldi app lists current offers and savings (Aldi mobile app). Aldi’s assortment and package sizes often differ from the other chains, so unit price, ingredient list, grade and net weight matter more than matching a brand name. If an Aldi item is a seasonal or limited-time product, label it as such instead of treating it as a permanently available equivalent.
Normalize every item to a common unit
Sticker prices are misleading when package sizes differ. Use the unit printed on the package or shelf tag and calculate a common measure:
- Price per ounce: total item price ÷ net ounces.
- Price per pound: total item price ÷ pounds.
- Price per count: total item price ÷ number of pieces, rolls, pods or servings.
- Price per liter: total item price ÷ liters.
For example, if one package costs $X and contains Y ounces, the normalized price is $X ÷ Y per ounce. Multiply that result by a shared reference size when you want an apples-to-apples basket line. Keep at least two decimal places during the calculation and round only the displayed result.
Weighted items need a final weight
Produce, meat, seafood, deli goods and bakery items sold by weight can change between the estimate and checkout. Use the fulfilled weight and final charge, not an online estimate. Aldi’s help information warns that weighted-item totals can vary at checkout (Aldi weighted-item and online-order information). If the final weight is unavailable before you decide, record an estimated range and mark the line as uncertain rather than presenting it as an exact comparison.

Keep online costs outside the shelf-price column
Compare merchandise first, then add the costs of obtaining it. Pickup and delivery can introduce service fees, delivery fees, order minimums, tips, substitutions and different promotional rules. Aldi’s online-order guidance notes that some in-store sales or promotions may not apply online and that retailer pricing-policy labels identify exceptions (Aldi online pricing guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCreate separate columns for:
- item subtotal before discounts;
- loyalty, coupon and sale reductions;
- pickup or delivery fee;
- service fee, tip and any small-order charge;
- tax, where applicable;
- substitution or out-of-stock adjustment.
Do not hide a $0 delivery promotion or a membership fee inside the item price. If a subscription waives fees, show the subscription cost for the period you are evaluating. For a store visit, include fuel or transit cost only in the trip comparison, not in the unit price.
Use a worksheet that exposes the trade-offs
A spreadsheet prevents memory and coupon errors. Use one row per product and columns such as these:
| Column | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Item | Specific product and flavor |
| Required size | Shared ounces, pounds, count or liters |
| Quality tier | Basic, organic, premium or other grade |
| Store | Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart or Aldi location |
| Standard price | Price before redeemable discounts |
| Redeemable price | Price after the shopper’s eligible sale or coupon |
| Unit price | Redeemable price divided by net quantity |
| Condition | Card, coupon, quantity threshold or other requirement |
| Availability | In stock, limited, substituted or unavailable |
| Channel | In store, pickup, retailer delivery or marketplace |
| Extra cost | Fee, minimum-order effect or substitution adjustment |
Sum the comparable redeemable prices for each store. Then make a second total that adds channel fees and a third that includes the cost of an extra trip. Keeping these totals separate shows whether a low shelf-price basket remains low after fulfillment costs.
Compare the whole basket before switching stores
Calculate the basket gap
For each chain, subtract the lowest complete comparable basket from that store’s total. Also calculate the percentage gap: (store total − lowest total) ÷ lowest total × 100. Use the same price type in every column—either all standard prices or all prices available to the same shopper. Mixing a sale price at one chain with a regular price at another exaggerates the difference.

Account for unavailable items
If one store lacks an item, choose a predeclared substitute with the same quality tier or remove that line from every store’s comparison. Never assign a zero price to an unavailable product. Track the number and value of substitutions because a nominally cheap store may create extra stops or force a more expensive replacement.
Decide whether a second trip pays
Compare the basket saving with additional driving time, fuel, parking, transit fares and the likelihood that a sale will end before you arrive. Set your own minimum saving for a second stop. A store that is $4 cheaper but requires a separate 30-minute trip may not beat a one-stop option; the worksheet lets you apply your personal trade-off rather than a universal rule.
What published price evidence can and cannot tell you
A June 2024 online grocery pricing study reported Kroger at a 5.3% premium to Walmart and Albertsons/Safeway at about a 21.6% premium to Walmart. The study did not fully capture loyalty rewards, fuel rewards or personalized promotions, so these are directional basket results, not promises about your local checkout total (June 2024 online grocery pricing study).
| Reported comparison | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Kroger: 5.3% above Walmart | Directional online-basket premium in that study; local coupons and store prices can change the result. |
| Albertsons/Safeway: approximately 21.6% above Walmart | Directional study result combining those banners; it is not a guaranteed Albertsons store total. |
| Aldi relative position | Not established by the cited study; compare your local Aldi basket directly, especially where package sizes differ. |
Walmart’s statements about predictable budgeting describe the company’s positioning, not an independent finding. Treat any chain’s marketing language as context and let your dated, local worksheet determine your decision.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Comparing unlike package sizes
Symptom: A 24-count package appears cheaper than a 12-count package only because the sticker total is lower. Fix: divide by count or net weight and compare the normalized figure.
Using a loyalty price that the shopper cannot redeem
Symptom: The spreadsheet shows a clipped coupon or member-only price without an account. Fix: record the standard price and the condition beside the lower price; use the lower figure only when the shopper is eligible.

Mixing online and in-store prices
Symptom: One chain’s marketplace price is compared with another chain’s shelf tag. Fix: run separate in-store, pickup and delivery comparisons, then add fees and minimums.
Ignoring weighted-item adjustments
Symptom: The online estimate is treated as the final meat or produce charge. Fix: replace it with the fulfilled weight and receipt amount, or show a range until the order is complete.
Counting future rewards as instant savings
Symptom: Points or fuel rewards are subtracted from today’s basket even though they can be used only later. Fix: show the receipt subtotal and future-reward value in separate columns, with expiration or redemption conditions.
Assuming the cheapest item means the cheapest trip
Symptom: Several sale items lead to a second store visit that costs more than the savings. Fix: compare complete baskets and include travel and time in the final decision.
A repeatable checklist
- Pick one nearby Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart and Aldi location and a single comparison date.
- Freeze a list with exact brands, sizes and quality tiers; document approved substitutes.
- Check each retailer’s app or website and capture standard and redeemable prices.
- Write every coupon, loyalty account, quantity threshold and reward condition beside its price.
- Convert each item to price per ounce, pound, count or liter.
- Use final fulfilled weights for weighted goods.
- Separate in-store, pickup, delivery and marketplace prices.
- Add fees, minimum-order effects, substitutions and travel costs after merchandise totals.
- Compare complete baskets, not isolated deals, and save the worksheet for the next shopping cycle.
Bottom line
The dependable way to compare Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart and Aldi is a dated, local, unit-normalized basket with two price columns: the ordinary price and the lowest price you can actually redeem. Published studies can provide direction, but changing assortments, loyalty offers, online fees and weighted-item adjustments decide what you will really pay. Repeating the same worksheet each shopping cycle turns a one-time guess into a useful personal price history.
