How to Compare Gaming Mouse Sensor Accuracy, Polling Rate, and Latency

A useful mouse comparison looks beyond maximum CPI and polling rate. Learn what tracking, report frequency, and latency tests measure—and when their results are comparable.

Compare measured performance under matching test conditions—not just a mouse’s maximum CPI or polling-rate number. CPI tells you the sensitivity setting; polling rate tells you how often the mouse reports data; latency describes how long a specific input takes to reach a defined point. None alone proves that a mouse will track better or feel faster in your setup.

What sensor accuracy means—and what CPI tells you

CPI means counts per inch: the number of movement counts reported as the mouse travels one physical inch. Manufacturers and users often call this setting DPI. A higher maximum CPI means a mouse offers a higher sensitivity setting; it does not show whether the sensor’s actual movement matches that setting or tracks consistently.

For a meaningful sensor comparison, look for measured CPI deviation from the selected value and consistency across movement speeds and settings. Tracking errors and lift-off behavior can also matter. Treat sensor latency as a separate measurement, not as another name for CPI accuracy. RTINGS describes CPI and sensor latency as distinct tests in its standardized mouse-testing methodology.

Keep manufacturer claims in context. In its January 28, 2021 announcement for the Viper 8KHz, Razer said its Focus+ Optical Sensor had “99.6% resolution accuracy.” That is Razer’s claim about a named product, not an independent cross-brand score or a guarantee of accuracy in every setup. Razer’s launch announcement also lists maximum CPI and other product specifications; those figures should not be mistaken for a complete tracking test.

What polling rate measures

Polling rate is how frequently a mouse reports data to the PC. At 1,000 Hz, it reports 1,000 times per second. Razer’s January 2021 explanation says its 8,000 Hz mode can report up to eight times as often as 1,000 Hz. The corresponding theoretical report interval falls from 1 millisecond to 0.125 milliseconds. That is a comparison of reporting cadence—not a claim that total click-to-screen latency falls by the same amount or that every player will notice a benefit. Razer’s explanation of HyperPolling is specific to its technology and product claims.

Why a higher rate may not help in practice

The PC and game must handle the reports. Razer’s HyperPolling guidance notes that some older game engines may not handle high-rate devices well and that a CPU-bound PC may not have resources to process 8,000 reports per second. Razer recommends lowering the rate in some games that struggle with high-rate devices.

Wireless power use is another practical consideration. Logitech says its G mice dynamically vary report rate with usage conditions to save battery. Its support guidance also warns that browser-based tests and third-party tools can show lower or fluctuating readings; Logitech says its mice may be capable of approximately 4 kHz or 8 kHz depending on PC capability. These points apply to Logitech’s support context, not every brand or mouse. Logitech’s report-rate testing guidance explains the limitations.

What latency numbers do—and do not—tell you

Latency needs a defined event and measurement boundary. Click latency might start at switch actuation and end when a USB analyzer receives the input, or it might be measured later in the chain. Sensor or motion latency concerns movement input instead of a click. End-to-end latency can include the mouse, connection, host processing, game, rendering, and display. A number without its start point, endpoint, connection mode, settings, and method cannot establish which mouse is faster in a full gaming setup.

  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver

RTINGS says it uses a Beagle 480 USB analyzer to intercept input and explicitly says its measurements are not end-to-end latency. Razer’s technology page describes controlled click-response measurements using its own framing, including electrical actuation through host receipt or frame reflection. These results have different boundaries unless the methods are shown to align. Read the method alongside any latency figure: RTINGS’ testing methodology and Razer’s HyperPolling page.

For a fair comparison, match the event being measured, start and end points, wired or wireless mode, polling setting, firmware and configuration, and test equipment or a validated equivalent. Prefer repeatable results that show an average or distribution and its spread over a single best-case number.

Axis What to compare Questions to ask
CPI and tracking Measured CPI deviation, consistency across speeds and settings, tracking errors, and lift-off behavior Is this an independent measurement or only a specification? Was the same method used for both mice?
Sensor latency The measured value and the event and endpoint used Does the test isolate sensor-to-host timing, or include the PC, game, and display?
Polling rate Supported settings and verified behavior at the chosen rate Was the rate checked with an instrumented or standalone test, or a browser tool? Can the PC and game process it?
Click latency Matched actuation-to-receipt method and reported results Are start and end points, connection mode, and switch or debounce settings the same?
Real-use trade-offs Wired or wireless mode, battery behavior, compatibility, and configuration Does the selected rate affect battery use or cause problems in the game or system?
Evidence quality Independent standardized testing versus a manufacturer specification Were models tested under the same bench version and conditions?

Standardized tests make side-by-side review more useful, but archived scores are not automatically interchangeable when a test method changes. RTINGS says its products may remain on older test benches after methodology updates. Its DeathAdder Essential versus G502 HERO comparison illustrates separate CPI, click-latency, and sensor-latency dimensions; the page also shows differing methodology versions for the models. Its model-specific conclusions should not be generalized to all Razer or Logitech mice.

How to make the buying decision

  1. Check tracking evidence first. Separate measured CPI deviation and tracking consistency from the maximum CPI printed on the specification sheet.
  2. Compare latency only across aligned tests. Confirm the event, endpoints, connection mode, settings, and test method before treating one result as lower than another.
  3. Choose a polling rate your setup can use. Consider the game, CPU load, and—on wireless mice—battery behavior. A browser polling test alone may not verify the mouse’s actual report rate.
  4. Check the test version and date. A shared review site is not enough if the products were assessed on different benches or under different methods.

When tracking is adequate, prefer comparable, repeatable latency evidence and a configuration that works in your games over the largest maximum CPI or polling-rate figure. The evidence cited here does not establish one universally best mouse or a benefit every player will perceive from a higher rate.
