There is no single temperature or visit length that makes a beach trip safe for every child: consider the local heat advisory, humidity, shade, the child’s age and health, activity, and how easily you can take cooling breaks. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says a heat index of 90°F or higher can pose significant health risk; that is general heat-health guidance, not a beach-specific go/no-go cutoff. Check the AAP’s extreme-heat guidance and local conditions before deciding.
Decide whether to go, shorten the visit, or stay home
Check the forecast and local heat advisories on the day of the outing. The AAP recommends considering a short beach or pool visit—or staying indoors—when it is very hot. A long stay should not be treated as safe just because you bring sunscreen, an umbrella, or plenty of gear.

Before leaving, consider whether you can provide reliable shade and cooling breaks, whether the child can drink appropriately for their age, and whether you can leave promptly if they feel unwell. Young children are especially vulnerable to heat, and they may not recognize or tell an adult that they need a break. For a child with a medical condition or an individualized heat-safety plan, ask their clinician what precautions to take. The CDC also notes that young children may need additional actions on hot days: CDC guidance on heat and children.
Reduce heat and sun exposure at the beach
Plan cooling breaks and offer fluids
Keep water available and offer frequent sips before a child asks. Take regular rest breaks in shade and shorten the outing if cooling off becomes difficult. For infants younger than six months, do not give water: the AAP advises offering additional breast milk to breastfed infants or additional formula to formula-fed infants. See the AAP’s beach-safety guidance.

Use several layers of sun protection
The AAP recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen labeled SPF 15 or 30, applied before beach exposure and reapplied every two hours or after the child leaves the water. Sunscreen does not prevent heat illness and should not be treated as a guarantee against sunburn. Add a rash guard or other protective clothing, a hat, and shade. An umbrella alone does not provide enough UV protection. For babies younger than six months, prioritize covering clothing and shade; sunscreen can cause skin reactions in this age group, so follow the AAP’s infant guidance.
Protect feet and secure shade
Hot sand can burn children’s feet, so use protective footwear. Secure an umbrella so it cannot blow away. Beach debris, lightning, changing weather, and holes in the sand can create additional hazards; leave the beach if conditions become unsafe.

What to do if a child becomes unwell
- Move the child out of the heat. Get them to a cool, shaded or indoor place and stop beach activity.
- Seek emergency medical care for severe signs. Confusion, unresponsiveness, or other severe symptoms may signal an emergency. Do not delay emergency help to try home treatment.
- Contact the child’s pediatrician promptly if concerning symptoms do not improve quickly in a cool environment. Follow medical advice, especially if the child has a health condition or symptoms worsen.
The AAP describes heat stroke as a medical emergency. When in doubt about severe symptoms, call your local emergency number.

A child who seems comfortable in the heat can still be at risk in or near water. Maintain close adult supervision around the water throughout the visit; shade and cooling breaks do not replace water supervision.
