1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart every comparison with each company’s reported GAAP diluted net income and diluted EPS for the same period. Then rebuild the company’s adjusted-earnings reconciliation line by line, including tax and diluted-share effects, and apply one consistent inclusion policy to every peer. GAAP is the common accounting anchor; adjusted earnings are issuer-defined, non-GAAP supplements rather than a universal standard.
The comparison is reliable only when the periods, continuing-operations basis, currency, share denominator, tax treatment and adjustment definitions match. A recurring charge does not become non-recurring because management labels it “one-time,” and a non-cash charge can still represent a real economic cost.

What GAAP and adjusted earnings actually measure
GAAP is the common starting point
GAAP net income and diluted EPS are prepared under the applicable accounting standards and are the closest common basis across S&P 500 companies. Capture the exact figures from the company’s filing, including whether the statement covers continuing operations, includes noncontrolling interests, and reports basic or diluted shares. For profitability and trend analysis, GAAP keeps costs that affect the reported income statement and the balance sheet in view.

Adjusted earnings are a company-defined view
“Adjusted earnings,” “adjusted net income” and “adjusted diluted EPS” do not have one prescribed definition. Each issuer chooses the items it removes and the labels it uses. Federal Signal, for example, describes adjusted net income and adjusted diluted EPS as measures intended to remove items management considers unrepresentative and to improve comparability across periods. That objective may be reasonable, but the definition still has to be examined rather than accepted as a standardized metric.
One issuer may remove acquisition costs and stock-based compensation while another leaves one or both in its adjusted result. Two companies can therefore report “adjusted EPS” that are not economically comparable even when their GAAP EPS are.
Set a like-for-like comparison before reading the numbers
Most errors occur before the arithmetic. Create a data sheet with one column per company and verify every field below before comparing growth rates or valuation multiples.
| Comparison field | What to match | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal period | Same quarter, half-year or fiscal year, with fiscal year-end dates recorded | A 52-week period, a 53-week period and a calendar-year period can contain different operating days and seasonality. |
| Operations basis | Continuing operations or total company, including the treatment of discontinued operations | Removing a sold business from one company but not another distorts both earnings and growth. |
| Currency | Reported currency and, if translated, the same translation convention | Currency translation can change both the numerator and the apparent growth rate. |
| Profit measure | GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders and diluted EPS | Net income attributable to all owners is not interchangeable with income available to common shareholders. |
| Share denominator | Diluted weighted-average shares, including the treatment of options, awards and convertibles | The same adjusted income can produce different EPS when dilution differs. |
| Noncontrolling interests | Whether income attributable to noncontrolling interests is removed | Ownership structure changes the income available to the parent’s common shareholders. |
| Tax convention | Reported tax effects for each adjustment and the resulting effective tax rate | Comparing pretax exclusions with after-tax exclusions overstates or understates adjusted earnings. |
| Definition | Every inclusion and exclusion in the reconciliation | The same label, such as “restructuring,” can cover very different economics. |
A repeatable workflow for comparing companies
1. Collect the primary disclosures
- Download the annual or quarterly filing and the earnings release for the same period.
- Record GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders, GAAP diluted EPS and diluted weighted-average shares exactly as reported.
- Locate the adjusted-net-income or adjusted-EPS reconciliation, including footnotes and any supplemental schedule.
- Save the prior-year reconciliation so that recurring exclusions can be identified.
Do not substitute a headline adjusted EPS figure for the reconciliation. The headline may omit the tax rate, share count or a separately disclosed adjustment that is necessary to reproduce the number.
2. Anchor the worksheet on GAAP
Use GAAP diluted net income as the first row and GAAP diluted EPS as the control total. If the issuer starts its reconciliation with a different GAAP subtotal, such as income from continuing operations, record that basis and do not mix it with total-company income elsewhere in the comparison.

3. Rebuild the bridge one row at a time
Enter each adjustment separately rather than accepting a combined “other” line. A complete bridge should contain these columns:
| Column | Entry |
|---|---|
| Adjustment label | The issuer’s exact description, such as acquisition and integration, impairment or litigation. |
| Pretax amount | The charge or gain before tax, with a sign showing whether it raises or lowers GAAP income. |
| Tax effect | Current and deferred tax effects disclosed for that item; mark “not separately stated” when the filing does not provide it. |
| After-tax amount | Pretax adjustment less or plus its tax effect, using the issuer’s sign convention. |
| Per-share effect | After-tax amount divided using the applicable diluted denominator, or the issuer’s disclosed per-share amount. |
| Running adjusted total | GAAP diluted net income plus or minus every accepted adjustment. |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | The final running total divided by the same period’s adjusted diluted share basis. |
Recalculate the final EPS independently. A small difference can result from rounding, but a material difference signals a missing adjustment, a tax mismatch, a basic-versus-diluted error or a different denominator.
4. Read management’s stated rationale
For every line, capture the explanation management provides for why the item is not representative of ongoing performance. The rationale is evidence about management’s intended use, not proof that the exclusion is economically valid. Item 10(e) requires an explanation of usefulness; your worksheet should preserve that explanation next to the number.
Classify each adjustment by its economics
Classification prevents a label from doing the analytical work. Mark every line on two or more dimensions: recurrence, cash effect, operating or financing connection, and the type of event.
| Adjustment family | Questions to ask | Analytical treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Acquisition and integration | Is the company completing one transaction or a continuing acquisition program? Are integration staff and systems costs repeating? | Separate transaction-specific costs from a standing cost of the company’s growth strategy. |
| Restructuring and severance | Does the company announce a new plan every year? Are severance payments and facility closures cash costs? | Keep recurring restructuring economics in a normalized measure even when an individual plan is unusual. |
| Amortization or purchase accounting | Is the charge tied to an acquired asset that supports current revenue? Is it non-cash in the current period? | Show both views. Non-cash does not mean costless: the acquisition required capital and the asset is being consumed. |
| Stock-based compensation | Are awards a regular part of employee pay and do they dilute shareholders? | Usually test an analyst-defined measure that leaves the expense in earnings, while showing the issuer’s exclusion separately. |
| Impairment | What asset or reporting unit lost value, and does the impairment reveal poor prior capital allocation? | Do not remove the charge without discussing the economic information in the write-down. |
| Litigation or settlements | Is this a discrete case or a pattern of claims in the company’s business? | Assess recurrence and operating responsibility; legal costs can be an ordinary cost of operating in a regulated industry. |
| Disposals | Is the gain or loss connected to a completed sale, and are related operations discontinued? | Match the adjustment with the continuing-operations basis and avoid counting a disposal gain as recurring profit. |
| Debt extinguishment | Was debt refinanced once or is the issuer repeatedly restructuring its capital? | Separate financing events from operating performance, but retain the cash cost in liquidity analysis. |
| Tax items | Is the tax benefit or charge a discrete law change, a valuation allowance, or a recurring rate effect? | Reconcile after tax; never add a pretax charge back without its tax consequence. |
Use both “cash versus non-cash” and “unusual versus recurring.” They are different tests. A cash charge can be genuinely unusual, and a non-cash charge can recur or reflect a real economic cost.

Test whether “one-time” exclusions keep returning
Search the same company’s prior annual and quarterly reconciliations for the exact adjustment and related wording. Create a history with the period, amount, label and stated reason. Repeated exclusions are evidence that the item may be part of normal economics, even if each event has a different immediate trigger.

Patterns that weaken an exclusion
- Restructuring appears in several consecutive years.
- Acquisition and integration costs recur because acquisitions are a continuing strategy.
- Litigation or regulatory settlements appear regularly in an inherently exposed business.
- Stock-based compensation is granted every period and is a predictable part of employee compensation.
- Impairments follow repeated underperformance in the same segment or asset class.
When a pattern appears, build a normalized measure that keeps the recurring portion in earnings. You can still display the issuer-reported adjusted figure, but do not treat it as the only answer.
Normalize the measure for an S&P 500 peer group
There are two defensible ways to compare adjusted results. The first is to compare only companies whose issuer-defined measures have genuinely similar scopes. The second is to create an analyst-defined measure with one inclusion policy and apply it identically to every company.
Issuer-reported comparison
Use this when studying how management communicates recurring operations. Place the reconciliation scope beside the EPS number and flag differences such as one company excluding stock compensation while another includes it. Do not rank the figures as though the labels were standardized.
Common-policy normalization
Define the policy before looking at the outcome. For example, you might retain stock-based compensation, recurring restructuring, ordinary litigation costs and recurring amortization, while excluding a clearly discrete disposal gain or a separately identified one-off law change. Apply the same rule to every issuer, document judgment calls, and preserve the original issuer-reported measure beside the normalized result.

Do not force an adjustment into a category when the filing does not provide enough detail. Record “not stated” and explain the limitation rather than estimating a tax effect or share impact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare growth and valuation through both lenses
Growth
Calculate year-over-year change in GAAP diluted EPS and adjusted diluted EPS separately. If adjusted EPS growth is materially higher, identify which exclusions create the gap. A widening gap caused by recurring stock compensation or recurring restructuring is different from a gap caused by a single, clearly discrete disposal loss.
Margins and operating performance
Use GAAP margins to retain the full cost structure. Use adjusted margins to examine management’s view of ongoing operations, but list every excluded cost below the margin. An adjusted operating margin that rises only because a recurring expense is removed does not show the same operating improvement as a GAAP margin increase.
Valuation multiples
Calculate the price-to-earnings multiple on GAAP diluted EPS and on the adjusted measure, using the same share price date and the same trailing or forward period. A lower adjusted P/E is not automatically evidence of cheapness: it may reflect exclusions that will recur, omit dilution or receive unusually favorable tax treatment. State which denominator you use and show the reconciliation that explains the difference.

| Reported profitability | What profit did the company report under accounting standards? | Not the primary purpose. |
| Trend integrity | Preserves recurring costs and gains in the time series. | Can improve period comparability when a genuinely discrete event distorts one period. |
| Balance-sheet-linked costs | Includes impairments, amortization and other charges tied to assets and financing. | May remove them, so inspect the economic reason before relying on the result. |
| Management’s operating view | May include events management regards as unusual. | Shows the issuer’s selected view of recurring operations. |
| Peer comparability | Common accounting anchor, subject to accounting estimates and business-model differences. | Requires a common adjustment policy; issuer labels alone are insufficient. |
Regulatory guardrails and warning signs
SEC guidance defines a non-GAAP financial measure as a numerical measure of historical or future financial performance, financial position or cash flow. Regulation G applies when a registrant publicly discloses material information containing a non-GAAP measure. The issuer must present the most directly comparable GAAP measure and reconcile the differences. Item 10(e) adds the equal-or-greater-prominence, usefulness and additional-purpose requirements.
Best Value
Regulation S-K also restricts practices that can mislead investors. Examples include excluding cash-settled charges from non-GAAP liquidity measures, subject to specified EBIT or EBITDA treatment; using misleading titles; and making adjustments that smooth recurring or recently recurring items.
Red flags in a reconciliation
- The adjusted measure appears before the GAAP measure or receives substantially more prominence.
- A large “other” line prevents identification of individual adjustments.
- The reconciliation changes its definition without explaining the change.
- A supposedly non-recurring charge appears in most annual periods.
- Tax effects are omitted or applied at a rate that cannot be reconciled.
- The adjusted EPS denominator is basic while the GAAP control figure is diluted.
- Cash costs are removed from a liquidity measure without the applicable regulatory treatment.
- The title implies a standardized metric when the measure is issuer-specific.
Special issues when comparing S&P 500 issuers
Different business models create different recurring costs
An acquisition-heavy consolidator may report integration costs every year, while an organic-growth company may not. A technology or professional-services company may use substantial stock-based compensation; a manufacturer may have larger impairment or restructuring charges. The difference is not merely industry terminology. It changes which exclusions represent the cost of producing future revenue.
Supplemental schedules can contain several “adjusted” measures
S&P Global’s fiscal 2025 supplement lists adjusted operating profit and margin, adjusted net income, adjusted diluted EPS, free-cash-flow variants, EBITDA and adjusted EBITDA, adjusted net debt, and adjusted deal-related amortization. Its earnings releases and supplement include reconciliations to corresponding GAAP measures. Treat each measure separately: an adjusted operating profit bridge cannot automatically be used to recreate adjusted net income, and an adjusted net-debt definition is not an earnings measure.
No single S&P 500 adjustment statistic answers the question
There is no broadly applicable S&P 500-wide prevalence or aggregate adjustment figure established by the authoritative material available for this topic. Issuer-specific reconciliations are the appropriate evidence for a company-level comparison; do not infer a portfolio-wide percentage or dollar total from a handful of filings.
A practical worksheet and review checklist
Use one worksheet per period and retain the underlying filing reference for every row.
- Write the fiscal period, filing date, currency and operations basis at the top.
- Enter GAAP diluted net income, GAAP diluted EPS and diluted weighted-average shares.
- Copy every reconciliation line exactly, preserving signs and labels.
- Enter pretax, tax, after-tax and per-share effects for each line.
- Recompute adjusted net income and adjusted diluted EPS.
- Compare your result with the issuer’s disclosed figure and investigate any material difference.
- Classify each line as recurring or unusual, cash or non-cash, and operating, financing, acquisition, restructuring, compensation, impairment, litigation, disposal or tax.
- Review prior periods for repeated exclusions.
- Apply the same normalization rule to each peer, documenting exceptions and “not stated” fields.
- Report GAAP and adjusted growth, margins and valuation multiples together.
Minimum quality checks before publishing a comparison
- Every adjusted number reconciles numerically to the closest GAAP number.
- The numerator and denominator use the same period and operations basis.
- Diluted shares, noncontrolling interests and discontinued operations are treated consistently.
- Tax effects are included or explicitly disclosed as unavailable.
- Recurring exclusions are identified from prior filings.
- Issuer-reported and analyst-normalized figures are clearly labeled.
- No conclusion relies solely on a company’s “one-time” description.
How to present the final conclusion
State the GAAP result first, then explain how each material adjustment changes the adjusted result. Describe whether the gap is driven by a discrete event, a repeated operating cost, a non-cash but economically meaningful charge, a tax item or a denominator difference. If a normalized peer measure differs from the issuer’s figure, show the policy and the affected lines instead of presenting the normalized number as an official company metric.
The most informative conclusion often has two sentences: GAAP shows the reported profitability and full cost burden; adjusted earnings show management’s selected view of recurring operations, subject to the quality and persistence of its exclusions. Investors can use both, but only after the bridge, history and denominator have been checked.
