The most reliable way to compare electric-vehicle stocks is to examine three linked questions in order: Is revenue growing for durable reasons? Are margins moving toward profitable unit economics? and Does the business convert sales into cash after the capital spending needed to keep operating? Growth by itself can be misleading. Lucid’s 2025 revenue rose 68% to $1,353.8 million, yet its gross margin was negative 92.8%. Tesla’s 2025 filing, by contrast, reported $94.827 billion of revenue, an 18.0% total gross margin and $6.217 billion of calculated free cash flow. Those figures illustrate why a useful comparison combines growth quality, margin direction, cash conversion, liquidity and business mix rather than ranking companies by sales growth alone.
What a sound EV-stock comparison should tell you
An EV manufacturer can report fast sales growth while losing money on every vehicle, spending heavily on new factories or relying on outside financing. Your comparison should therefore produce answers to four questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Growth quality: Are additional sales coming from more vehicles, higher prices, recurring software or services, energy products, or one-time regulatory credits?
- Profitability path: Do gross margins improve as production scales, and are operating expenses growing slower than gross profit?
- Cash durability: After operating cash flow and capital expenditures are considered, how quickly is cash being consumed?
- Business mix and scale: Is the company primarily an automaker, or do energy storage, software and services materially change its economics?
Use the latest completed annual filing as the base period. Then add quarterly data to identify inflection points without treating one quarter as a final verdict.
Build an apples-to-apples comparison table
Collect the same fields for every company and use the same fiscal year, currency and accounting basis. Mark whether each number is reported by the company or calculated from reported figures.

| Category | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Period and currency | Fiscal year, fiscal year-end and reporting currency | Prevents mixing 12-month periods or currencies that are not comparable |
| Revenue | Total revenue; automotive revenue; energy, software and services revenue | Shows scale and whether non-vehicle activities are material |
| Growth | Year-over-year growth and, when three years of data are available, three-year CAGR | Separates recent acceleration from a sustained record |
| Margins | Total gross margin, automotive gross margin, operating margin | Reveals product economics and the cost of running the company |
| Cash generation | Operating cash flow, capital expenditures, calculated free cash flow and free-cash-flow margin | Measures cash left after necessary investment |
| Funding position | Cash and investments, debt, credit facilities and other financing | Indicates how long losses and expansion can be funded |
| Operating scale | Vehicle deliveries, production, factories and major programs | Provides context for fixed-cost absorption and capacity spending |
| Non-recurring items | Restructuring, inventory write-downs, ramp costs, unusual credits and settlements | Stops temporary effects from being mistaken for a trend |
If a filing does not disclose a comparable value, write not stated rather than estimating it. Keep GAAP figures in one set of columns and any non-GAAP measures in separate columns.
Measure revenue growth, then test its quality
Calculate the basic rates
Year-over-year revenue growth is:
(Current-year revenue − Prior-year revenue) ÷ Prior-year revenue × 100
For a three-year compound annual growth rate, use:
(Current revenue ÷ Revenue three years earlier)^(1/3) − 1

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A three-year CAGR is useful when a single year was affected by a launch, a supply disruption or an unusually low comparison base. If three complete years are unavailable, do not manufacture a CAGR.
Split growth into its economic drivers
Read the revenue footnotes and management discussion to separate:
- Vehicle volume: More deliveries usually indicate expanding demand, but discounts or low-margin fleet sales can dilute economics.
- Price and mix: Higher transaction prices can lift revenue without adding vehicles; promotions and lower-priced trims have the opposite effect.
- Regulatory credits: Credits can carry very high margins but depend on regulation and competitors’ compliance needs. Treat them separately from vehicle sales.
- Energy generation and storage: Battery-storage deployments can grow faster or carry different margins than cars.
- Software and services: Subscription, charging, maintenance and other recurring lines may improve revenue stability, but their costs and recognition rules differ from vehicle sales.
Tesla’s 2025 filing reports total revenue of $94.827 billion and reports automotive, energy-generation-and-storage, and services-and-other revenue separately. That segmentation lets you ask whether growth is broad-based or concentrated in one business.
Why a high growth rate can be a warning
Lucid reported 2025 annual revenue of $1,353.8 million, up 68% from 2024. Its 2025 gross margin was negative 92.8%, although that improved from negative 114.3% in 2024. The combination means sales expanded rapidly while direct costs still substantially exceeded revenue. In a comparison, place that growth beside vehicle deliveries, average selling price, production utilization, warranty costs and cash burn rather than treating 68% as a standalone ranking.

Use gross margin to examine product economics
Total and segment gross margin
Gross margin is:
(Revenue − Cost of revenue) ÷ Revenue × 100
It measures how much revenue remains after direct production and delivery costs, before research and development, selling expenses and corporate overhead. Compare both the consolidated figure and the automotive figure when a company has energy or software operations. A profitable energy segment can mask weak vehicle economics in the total margin.
Tesla reported a 2025 total gross margin of 18.0% and a 17.8% total automotive gross margin. The narrow difference suggests that, for that year, the consolidated result was close to the automotive result; nevertheless, the segment disclosures should still be checked for mix and regulatory-credit effects.
Read the direction, not just the level
Plot at least three annual points and several quarters. Improving margin can result from manufacturing learning, lower battery costs, higher utilization or a richer product mix. Declining margin can reflect price cuts, commodity inflation, launch inefficiencies, warranty provisions or inventory write-downs.
Do not infer profitability from gross margin alone. A company can improve gross margin while still losing money because it is funding factories, engineering, software, retail locations or charging infrastructure.
Follow operating margin to the bottom of the income statement
Operating margin includes research and development, selling and administrative expenses and other operating costs:
Operating margin = Operating income ÷ Revenue × 100
Compare the margin trajectory with revenue growth. If revenue rises 30% while operating expenses rise 50%, scale is not yet producing leverage. Break out R&D, sales and marketing, general and administrative costs, restructuring and impairment charges where the filing provides them.

Production ramps often make operating results look worse before they improve. New plants, tooling and engineering teams create costs ahead of volume. That explanation is credible only when utilization, deliveries, gross margin and cash consumption subsequently move in the expected direction.
Calculate free cash flow and cash-conversion margin
The core calculation
Use reported cash-flow figures, not net income:
Free cash flow = Net cash provided by operating activities − Capital expenditures
Free-cash-flow margin = Free cash flow ÷ Revenue × 100
Capital expenditures should represent purchases of property, plant and equipment and other necessary investment as presented in the cash-flow statement. Keep acquisitions, investments and financing transactions separate unless the company defines them as capital expenditures.
Worked example: Tesla’s 2025 figures
Tesla reported $14.747 billion of operating cash flow and $8.53 billion of capital expenditures for 2025. Subtracting the latter from the former gives calculated free cash flow of $6.217 billion. Dividing $6.217 billion by $94.827 billion of revenue produces a calculated free-cash-flow margin of approximately 6.6%. The result is a calculation from reported figures, not a separately reported non-GAAP measure.
Why cash flow can diverge from earnings
Working-capital movements can temporarily boost or depress operating cash flow. Inspect changes in accounts receivable, inventory, accounts payable, customer deposits and supplier-financing arrangements. A delivery surge funded by customer deposits may produce cash before the related revenue is recognized; an inventory build can consume cash before a vehicle is sold.
Depreciation and stock-based compensation are non-cash expenses in the period recorded, but they still matter for interpretation. Rivian’s 2025 filing identifies $72 million of depreciation and amortization and $306 million of stock-based compensation within research and development. Record these items when assessing how much reported operating performance depends on non-cash adjustments and how much future dilution or replacement investment may be required.

Compare Tesla and Lucid without forcing a stock ranking
The available 2025 figures illustrate how the framework works, but they are not a complete peer screen. Several requested fields are not stated in the cited figures and should be collected from each company’s full filing before making a broader comparison.
| Metric (fiscal 2025) | Tesla | Lucid | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $94.827 billion, reported | $1,353.8 million, reported | Scale differs dramatically; compare growth and unit economics as well as absolute sales |
| Revenue growth | Not stated in the cited figures | 68% year over year, reported | Lucid’s growth must be tested against its negative gross margin |
| Total gross margin | 18.0%, reported | −92.8%, reported | Shows a major difference in direct-cost coverage |
| Automotive gross margin | 17.8%, reported | Not stated in the cited figures | Use segment data where available; consolidated margins can hide mix |
| Operating margin | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Retrieve operating income and calculate the margin on the same basis |
| Operating cash flow | $14.747 billion, reported | Not stated in the cited figures | Check working-capital footnotes before calling cash generation durable |
| Capital expenditures | $8.53 billion, reported | Not stated in the cited figures | Use the same capex definition for every company |
| Free cash flow | $6.217 billion, calculated | Not stated in the cited figures | Calculate as operating cash flow less capex |
| Free-cash-flow margin | Approximately 6.6%, calculated | Not stated in the cited figures | Divide calculated FCF by reported revenue |
| Cash, investments, debt and deliveries | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | These are required to assess liquidity runway and operating scale |
The correct conclusion from this limited set is methodological: Lucid’s high revenue growth does not outweigh a deeply negative gross margin, while Tesla’s positive gross and calculated free-cash-flow margins indicate a more mature current economics profile. A full investment comparison would still require valuation, balance-sheet, delivery and forward-guidance data that are not included here.

Keep GAAP and non-GAAP measures separate
Companies can define adjusted EBITDA, adjusted operating income, adjusted free cash flow and key operating measures differently. Lucid explicitly cautions that companies, including others in the EV industry, may calculate non-GAAP measures differently. Use the reported GAAP income statement and cash-flow statement as the common foundation, then show reconciliations for adjusted figures.
Check the footnotes before judging cash quality
- Separate recurring customer deposits from temporary order activity.
- Identify supplier financing that delays cash payments.
- Review inventory write-downs and warranty provisions.
- Distinguish normal depreciation from accelerated charges related to idle or retooled plants.
- Flag restructuring, litigation, grant income and unusual regulatory-credit sales.
- Note stock-based compensation and its potential dilution.
A single year with unusually favorable working capital or a large one-time credit should not be annualized as a permanent cash yield.
Evaluate liquidity and cash-burn durability
For a company with negative free cash flow, calculate a simple runway estimate:
Approximate runway in years = Cash and liquid investments ÷ Average annual cash burn

Then add committed credit lines, restricted cash, debt maturities and expected capital spending. A company can have substantial cash yet face a near-term funding need if debt repayments or factory commitments arrive before it reaches positive operating cash flow.
Best Value
Compare cash burn with the milestones management says will improve economics: production volume, plant utilization, battery cost, software adoption or model launches. If the milestones repeatedly move out while spending rises, external financing risk is increasing.
Use business mix and scale as separate comparison axes
Two companies with identical automotive gross margins may have different risk profiles because one sells energy storage or software. Record the proportion of revenue and gross profit from each segment when disclosed. Ask whether the non-automotive business is recurring, capital intensive, regulated or dependent on the same manufacturing assets.
Scale also changes the interpretation of margins. Fixed factory, tooling, engineering and service-network costs are spread across more vehicles as deliveries rise. Conversely, rapid capacity expansion can depress free cash flow for years. Compare deliveries and production with installed capacity, not just headline revenue.

After building the annual base table, review each quarterly release for changes in:
- Sequential deliveries and production
- Automotive and consolidated gross margin
- Operating expenses as a percentage of revenue
- Operating cash flow and capital expenditures
- Inventory, customer deposits and accounts payable
- Cash, debt and newly announced financing
Tesla’s second-quarter 2025 investor summary presents sequential quarterly gross-margin, operating-margin and free-cash-flow figures. Such a sequence is useful for identifying a trend, but one quarter can be affected by product transitions, shipping timing, incentives or factory downtime. Confirm an apparent inflection in the next reporting period.
A practical decision framework
For each EV stock, answer the following in writing before comparing prices or valuation multiples:
- Growth: What was year-over-year growth, and what is the three-year CAGR if available?
- Composition: How much came from volume, price, regulatory credits, energy, software and services?
- Gross economics: What are total and automotive gross margins, and are they improving over several periods?
- Operating leverage: Are R&D, sales and administrative costs growing slower or faster than gross profit?
- Cash conversion: What are operating cash flow, capex, calculated FCF and FCF margin?
- Quality of cash: Were results helped by deposits, supplier financing, inventory liquidation or one-time items?
- Funding: How much cash and debt does the company have, and when are major financing needs due?
- Execution: Are production, deliveries, utilization and cost targets progressing on schedule?
Only after these answers should you add valuation measures such as enterprise value to sales or price to free cash flow. Multiples are meaningful only when the underlying revenue, margins and cash flows are comparable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon comparison mistakes
- Ranking by revenue growth alone: Fast growth can coexist with negative gross margins, as Lucid’s 2025 figures demonstrate.
- Using consolidated margin for every company: Energy or software revenue can conceal automotive weakness.
- Mixing annual and quarterly data: Use matching periods and label seasonality.
- Calling adjusted cash flow GAAP cash flow: Preserve the company’s reconciliation and definitions.
- Ignoring capital intensity: An automaker may need years of heavy factory and tooling investment.
- Treating regulatory credits as recurring demand: Track them separately from vehicle revenue.
- Annualizing one favorable working-capital swing: Inspect deposits, inventory and supplier terms first.
- Ignoring dilution: Stock-based compensation lowers cash costs today but can increase the share count.
- Comparing different currencies or fiscal years: Convert consistently and disclose the method.
- Confusing a better margin with a profitable company: Gross margin excludes operating expenses and financing needs.
What this framework can and cannot establish
Revenue growth, margins and cash flow can show whether an EV business is scaling toward self-funded operations and whether recent growth has credible economic support. They cannot, by themselves, determine a fair share price, forecast demand, assess battery technology, or provide a buy or sell recommendation. Those questions require a defined peer universe, current market prices, complete balance-sheet data, delivery forecasts and an explicit valuation method.
Use the annual filing for the comparable base, refresh the table each quarter, preserve the distinction between reported and calculated numbers, and let the direction of unit economics and cash durability carry more weight than a single headline growth rate.
