The most reliable pre-match comparison is not an all-map ranking. Use the same date range and filters for both teams, measure each map’s pick, ban, side and opponent context, then check whether the players’ roles still fit the current lineup. Finish by modeling the veto: the maps that can actually be played determine which statistical strengths matter.

A practical report combines a 30–90-day form window with a 6–12-month stability check, separates match results from map results, and labels every small sample or roster change. This approach turns scattered CS2 statistics into a matchup-specific probability rather than a misleading headline percentage.

Set one comparison frame before collecting numbers

Comparing two teams with different filters produces false precision. Write down the frame first and apply it identically to both sides.

Filter Recommended setting Why it matters
Primary time window Last 30–90 days Captures the current tactical and roster state.
Stability window Last 6–12 months Shows whether a current streak is repeatable when the short sample is thin.
Event tier Keep LAN, premier online and lower-tier events in separate views A long run against weak opposition is not equivalent to playoff wins.
Opponent band Use the same ranking range for both teams Prevents a schedule-strength advantage from looking like better form.
Format Separate best-of-one, best-of-three and best-of-five Series depth and veto decisions differ by format.
Roster Record the active five and the dates of substitutions Results from a previous lineup may not describe the current team.
Setting Tag LAN and online matches Travel, stage conditions and server conditions can change performance.

HLTV’s map, team, match, ranking, event, format and time filters let you reproduce this frame. The same filters should be used for every later calculation, and the access date should be recorded because databases change.

Measure map-pool depth instead of chasing one win-rate number

Build a map record for every relevant map

For each map in the active pool, record maps played, share of the team’s matches, wins and losses, win rate, round differential, pick or ban status, side splits and opponent strength. Include the sample count beside every percentage. A 75% win rate over four maps is a different claim from 58% over 24 maps.

Map evidence What to calculate Question it answers
Usage Maps played and percentage of all maps Is this a practiced identity or an occasional choice?
Results Map win rate and round differential How decisively does the team perform?
Pick performance Record on own picks Can the team convert its preferred map?
Opponent-pick performance Record when the opponent chooses the map Can it survive outside its comfort zone?
Decider performance Wins and losses on deciding maps Does pressure reveal a weakness after both picks are removed?
Side performance CT and T round win rates or differentials Is the map strong on both halves or dependent on one side?
Veto behavior Ban frequency and first-ban pattern Which maps can an opponent remove immediately?
Context Ranking band and sample size How trustworthy is the observed strength?

Define a deep pool by veto resilience

A deep pool has two or three dependable picks, a playable third map and no automatic ban that gives opponents an easy route through the veto. It is possible for a team with a lower all-map average to be harder to prepare for if its useful maps cover more veto outcomes.

Weight recent maps more heavily when the lineup or tactical system is current, but flag any map with a very small sample. Do not average maps blindly: a 90% result on a map played twice should not outweigh a stable 60% result over a substantial schedule. Round differential helps distinguish narrow wins from control, while side splits can expose a team that must build a large lead on one half to survive.

Separate picks, opponent picks and deciders

Own-pick data measures preparation and confidence. Opponent-pick data measures adaptability. Decider data measures the remaining map after each team has removed its preferred weaknesses. Keep those records in separate columns; combining them hides the exact veto situation a match will create.

HLTV’s map view provides distributions, side-win displays, time windows and ranking filters. A database snapshot showed 197,257 map records at access time in 2026; that is a count of records in the database, not a season total or a claim about the number of current professional maps.

Audit roles and role fit on the current five

Map the responsibilities, not just the names

List the in-game leader (IGL), primary AWPer, entry or space-maker, trade and support player, lurk or flex player, and site anchors for each map. A player can occupy more than one category, and responsibilities can change between sides or maps. Confirm the assignments from current roster announcements, demos or team reporting; statistical databases generally do not label roles reliably for a specific lineup.

Role Evidence to inspect Fit question
IGL Calling responsibility, utility patterns, mid-round decisions and fragging output Can the leader maintain useful calls without the team losing too much firepower?
Primary AWPer Weapon usage, opening attempts, saved impact and side positioning Does the AWPer have a stable job on both sides and across the vetoed maps?
Entry or space-maker Opening-duel attempts and first-contact routes Who creates the first-man advantage, and is that player supported?
Trader or support Trade percentage, flash assists, utility damage and refrag routes Who reliably converts an entry into a second kill?
Lurk or flex Late-round positioning, rotations and ability to change roles Can the player create pressure without breaking the team’s timing?
Anchor Site assignments, multi-kill resistance and retake survival Who absorbs the hardest defensive duty when opponents target a site?

Use ratings as evidence, not as a role verdict

Player-level rating, ADR, KAST, K/D, opening-duel and clutch figures are useful context. They do not measure every contribution equally. An entry may carry a poor K/D while creating the space that lets a star trade; an anchor may post fewer opening kills because the role requires surviving isolated holds; an IGL may sacrifice personal attempts to preserve utility and mid-round control.

The CS2 Stats API exposes player and team fields that can support this audit. Combine those fields with demo or team evidence to identify who starts fights, who trades, who supplies utility and who anchors. Compare each player with others performing the same job rather than ranking all five by one score.

Check role continuity after a change

A substitute, promotion or role swap can alter a team’s map identity before the win-loss record fully reflects it. Mark the date of the change, split pre-change and post-change records, and note whether the AWPer, IGL or entry duties moved. A new player who raises raw rating may still reduce cohesion if established trade paths and anchor coverage disappear.

Separate recent match form from map form

Report both levels

Match form is the series record: series wins and losses, event tier, format and opponent band. Map form is the underlying map wins and losses, map differential and round differential. A team can win a best-of-three 2–1 while losing the total round count, or post a strong map record through many best-of-ones without proving it can close a series.

Form measure Include Interpretation
Series record Wins, losses and format Measures ability to complete a match structure.
Map record Maps won, lost and differential Shows breadth beneath the series result.
Round record Round differential, plus CT/T splits where available Shows margin and half-specific reliability.
Schedule context Opponent-ranking band and event tier Separates quality from opportunity.
Continuity Lineup and role changes during the window Indicates whether the form belongs to the team that will play.

Use two windows and label confidence

Use the short 30–90-day window for current confidence and the 6–12-month window for stability. If the short window contains only a handful of series or maps, treat it as a signal rather than proof of a durable improvement. A five-map streak can reflect a favorable veto, weak opposition or variance.

Split results by LAN and online setting, event tier and best-of format. HLTV supports time, opponent-ranking, event, format and Valve-ranked filters, making these splits reproducible. Keep the same categories for both teams; otherwise one side may appear stronger simply because its results were collected under easier conditions.

Model the veto and the matchup interaction

Write the likely sequence

Start with each team’s first-ban pattern, then identify the maps each side is most likely to pick, the opponent’s likely pick and the remaining decider. Valve’s map-pick documentation describes the mechanics for the relevant format; your comparison should mirror that sequence rather than treating all seven maps as equally likely.

  1. Remove automatic bans. Note the map each team routinely eliminates and whether the opponent can predict it.
  2. Assign Team A’s likely pick. Use recent own-pick frequency, win rate, round margin and current lineup continuity.
  3. Assign Team B’s likely pick. Apply the same evidence and filters.
  4. Evaluate the decider. Use decider records, side balance and the depth of each team’s preparation on the remaining map.
  5. Stress-test alternatives. If a team changes its first ban or pick, recalculate which third map appears.

Prioritize playable maps over all-map averages

The central question is not “Who has the higher all-map percentage?” It is “Which maps are likely to be played, and whose roles and preparation are strongest on those maps?” A team with one elite map and two fragile maps may be favored only when it controls the first pick. A broader team can gain value when the opponent’s ban pattern leaves a decider it practices regularly.

Published research on map selection found that modeling the choice process improved predicted map-win probability by up to 11% and overall match-win probability by 19.8% for evenly matched teams. Those figures describe that study’s modeling result, not a universal edge for every match or a guarantee that a particular veto will improve prediction.

Form Recent series/maps, opponent strength and event tier Recent series/maps, opponent strength and event tier Measures current level with context.
Stability Roster continuity, role changes and map-practice continuity Roster continuity, role changes and map-practice continuity Separates repeatable strength from noise.
Veto leverage Picks, bans, decider and overlap Picks, bans, decider and overlap Converts statistics into matchup probability.

Follow this repeatable pre-match process

  1. Freeze the scope. Record the access date, short and long windows, event tiers, opponent band, formats, setting and active roster.
  2. Export the match list. Keep series and individual maps in separate rows so a 2–1 result is not mistaken for a single observation.
  3. Calculate map usage and results. Add map share, win rate, round differential, pick, opponent-pick, decider and side columns.
  4. Mark uncertainty. Flag maps with very few appearances and any result produced by a previous lineup.
  5. Map roles. Confirm IGL, AWPer, entry, trader/support, lurk or flex and anchors for each likely map.
  6. Split form. Report series form, map form, opponent strength, event tier and best-of format separately.
  7. Simulate the veto. Apply likely bans and picks, then inspect the remaining decider and alternative ban paths.
  8. Write a conditional verdict. State which team benefits from the expected veto, which map is the swing point and how small samples or lineup changes reduce confidence.

Common comparison errors and their fixes

  • Using one all-map percentage: replace it with map-specific picks, bans, sides and round margins.
  • Mixing weak online matches with elite LAN series: split by setting and event tier before drawing a conclusion.
  • Ignoring the opponent: apply the same ranking band or disclose that the schedules differ.
  • Treating a five-map streak as a trend: compare it with the longer window and state the sample count.
  • Ranking players by rating alone: evaluate entries, trades, support, anchors and IGL work within role.
  • Using old lineup results: split the record at the roster or role-change date.
  • Assuming the veto is fixed: test alternate first bans and picks because a single change can expose a different decider.
  • Inventing a universal cutoff: no authoritative source establishes a single “good” map-pool size, role balance or recent-form threshold; use the records and explain uncertainty.

How to state the final matchup judgment

Finish with a map-by-map explanation rather than a generic team ranking. Identify the likely Team A pick, likely Team B pick and decider; explain the role interaction on each; then state whether the evidence is strong, moderate or fragile based on sample size, opponent quality and roster continuity. If the expected veto changes, say which team gains the alternative path.

A useful conclusion can therefore say that one team has the deeper veto because it owns two reliable picks and a serviceable decider, while the other has the higher recent rating but depends on one map and a newly changed entry role. That is more actionable than declaring a winner from an all-map percentage, and it remains honest when the available sample is small.
