For a fair console comparison, measure the same game in the same version and mode on each system. Record what the game actually does—frame-rate behavior, rendering resolution, and repeatable load times—rather than treating hardware specifications or a “4K” label as proof of how it performs in play.
Start with the game version, not the console generation
The most useful comparison unit is a particular game build running on a particular console. A last-generation release played through backward compatibility, a patched release, and a native newer-generation edition are different test cases. If the two consoles cannot run the same edition, call the comparison illustrative; differences may reflect the game version as well as the hardware.

Before testing, log the title and edition, patch, console model, system software version if available, graphics mode, display settings, and storage location. For each result, also note the save, route, or scene used and the measurement source and date. These details make it possible to understand what the comparison does—and does not—show.
How to make the comparison repeatable
- Choose matching conditions. Use the same game edition and patch where possible, the same graphics mode, and equivalent display output and refresh settings. Record any differences you cannot match.
- Pick a repeatable sequence. Choose a defined activity, such as a specific gameplay route or fast-travel destination. Use the same starting save and actions on each console where feasible.
- Define the measurement. For a load test, specify the exact start and end points—for example, from selecting a save to regaining control. For performance, identify the scene or gameplay segment being observed.
- Repeat short tests. Report the observed range or whether results were consistent across attempts, rather than presenting one run as universal. Keep startup, save loading, and fast travel as separate activities.
- Label the evidence. Keep manufacturer specifications, publisher claims, independent technical analysis, and your own measurements distinct. Include the measurement date and relevant test conditions with results.
Microsoft’s developer guidance recommends matching actions, routes, and gameplay progression across Series S and Series X where feasible, while noting that graphics modes can affect resolution and frame rate. Its stated purpose is sustainability measurement, not a complete cross-generation benchmarking standard, but the controlled-comparison principle applies. Microsoft Learn’s platform-baseline guidance explains that approach. PSFoundry also describes fields such as graphics mode, frame-rate target, internal and output resolution, reconstruction, ray tracing, and measured loads in its methodology and glossary; that is one specialist database’s method, not a universal standard.

Compare frame rate as a target and an observed result
A mode’s target frame rate is not evidence that the game holds that rate throughout play. Record the stated target separately from observed behavior in representative scenes. If the analysis provides them, include frame-time consistency and the circumstances in which drops occur; a headline target alone cannot describe smoothness or stability.
Graphics modes are trade-offs, not a simple ranking of consoles. A mode may prioritize frame rate, resolution, ray tracing, or other visual settings. Compare equivalent modes when possible, and name the settings instead of declaring one system categorically superior. If the modes are not equivalent, describe the mismatch clearly.
Separate rendered resolution from the signal sent to the display
Output resolution describes the video signal sent to the screen; it does not establish the resolution at which a game rendered every frame. A game can output a 4K signal while rendering internally at a lower or changing resolution, or reconstructing and upscaling the image. When the evidence provides the details, report output resolution separately from internal or dynamic resolution and name the reconstruction or upscaling method. If those details have not been established, do not infer them from the display’s signal or a visual impression.

Record ray tracing and other mode-specific visual settings where they are reported. These can help explain why two modes—or two game versions—look or perform differently, but they do not by themselves establish a system-wide advantage.
Measure loading with defined endpoints
A load time is the wait measured for one game activity under stated conditions, not a general score for a console or its storage device. The result can depend on the game’s code, patch, assets, route, and storage as well as the console. For each result, record the activity, start and end definitions, game version and patch, storage location, and test date. Test more than one repeatable activity, such as startup, loading a save, or fast travel, and keep their results separate.
A GameSpot comparison of five backward-compatible games on PS5 and Xbox Series X measured from game start to the first controllable moment and noted that it used the latest non-enhanced patches available at the time. That example shows why endpoints and patch state belong beside any load-time figure; its results should not be treated as measurements of current patched versions. Interpret backward compatibility carefully
A backward-compatible game may load faster or run more consistently on newer hardware without using all the capabilities of a native newer-generation release. Compatibility behavior varies by title, so identify whether you tested an old-generation build, a backward-compatible build, a performance update, or a native edition.

Sony says PS4 and PlayStation VR games load more quickly from the PS5 internal SSD, while not leveraging the SSD’s full next-generation capabilities. Its PS5 FAQ describes this distinction, and its hardware announcement presents the ultra-high-speed SSD and custom I/O system as designed with the goal of removing loading screens—not as a guarantee that every game eliminates waits. Sony’s PS5 FAQ and PS5 hardware specifications announcement provide the platform context.
Microsoft describes possible backward-compatibility improvements for supported titles, including faster loads, steadier frame rates, improved resolution, and image quality; selected games may also receive frame-rate doubling. Use visual impressions for what they can establish
Side-by-side viewing can help describe visible differences, but it cannot reliably establish precise resolution or frame-rate behavior on its own. Tom’s Guide’s 2025 PS5-versus-Xbox Series X comparison acknowledges the limits of qualitative testing without specialized measurement equipment. Treat impressions as subjective observations, not technical measurements. Tom’s Guide’s comparison discusses that limitation.
A compact comparison record
Use one record per game and platform so unlike versions or test conditions do not disappear inside a broad console-versus-console verdict.
