A TV is usually the better fit for bright rooms, daytime viewing, and low-effort everyday use. A portable projector makes more sense when you want a much larger, movable image and can control the light, provide a suitable surface, and place it at the right distance. The room—not a universal winner—should decide.
What matters most: your room and viewing habits
Start with when and where you watch. TVs are designed to compete with ambient light; projected images can look washed out when daylight or lamps remain in the room. LG notes that even a projector producing substantial light can lose image impact under ambient light (LG’s projector guide). A large image is appealing, but it does not compensate for a room that is too bright for comfortable viewing.

For a rough point of reference, Samsung UK suggests 1,500–2,500 lumens for a controlled-light home theatre and 3,000 or more where large windows affect viewing (Samsung’s projector buying guide; publication date not stated, accessed 2026). These are broad manufacturer recommendations, not guaranteed thresholds. Brightness depends on the specific model, image size, screen surface, room light, and the measurement standard used. Lumen figures from different standards should not be assumed to be directly comparable.
When a TV is the better choice
- Your room stays bright. Windows, daylight, or lights left on tend to make a TV the more dependable option.
- You watch during the day. A television is generally better suited to daytime viewing than a projected image competing with ambient light.
- You want a consistent picture with minimal adjustment. A TV stays in place, while projection depends on positioning, alignment, distance, and the surface.
- The screen is for frequent shared use. For routine viewing, a fixed display is usually simpler than setting up a portable device each time.
LG STORY says many modern TVs produce 500–1,000 nits, a general manufacturer statement rather than a specification for every current TV (LG STORY, December 2025). This figure is not a direct comparison with projector lumens: the units describe different measures, and the sources do not establish a like-for-like brightness conversion.

When a portable projector is worth considering
Consider a portable projector if flexibility and a much larger image matter more than effortless everyday use. Projection can exceed 100 inches, while a TV has a fixed display size (LG India’s projector guide). A larger picture is useful for movie-focused viewing, but it needs a suitable surface, enough placement distance, and seating that works with the image size.
Portability is most valuable if you will actually move the projector, put it away between uses, or use it in more than one location. Before treating it as a TV replacement, check the model’s brightness, battery capability, and placement requirements against your intended room and how often you watch (Samsung’s projector buying guide).

Check placement, surface, and image size before buying
Measure the throw distance
A projector needs a placement distance matched to its throw ratio and the image you want. Short-throw models can help when the projector cannot sit far from the wall; standard-throw models suit rooms with more placement distance. Check the exact model’s specifications or manufacturer calculator against your available space before buying (LG India’s projector guide).
Assess the wall or screen
A smooth, light-colored wall may work, but the projected image depends on the surface. A dedicated screen can provide a more suitable projection surface. If the wall is uneven, strongly colored, or otherwise unsuitable, factor in a portable screen rather than assuming the projector will look its best on any wall.

Match the image to your seating
Projection gives you flexibility over image size, but the larger image still needs to suit the viewing distance and available surface. Decide where viewers will sit and how wide an image that position can comfortably accommodate before choosing a projector or screen.
Use this quick decision checklist
- Note the lighting. Identify whether you will watch in daylight, with lamps on, or in a room where light can be reduced.
- Choose the image size you actually want. A large projected picture is a benefit only if your wall or screen and seating can support it.
- Measure the available placement distance and target image width. Compare those measurements with the specific projector’s throw specifications or calculator.
- Inspect the projection surface. Decide whether a smooth, neutral-colored wall is adequate or a screen is needed.
- Compare brightness claims carefully. Check the stated measurement standard and do not treat different standards’ lumen figures as directly interchangeable.
- Consider how often you will use it. Frequent everyday viewing in a bright room points toward a TV; occasional, flexible large-image viewing in a controllable room may suit a portable projector.
Is a projector cheaper than a TV for a large image?
There is no neutral, independently verified like-for-like total-cost figure established for a TV and projector in the same room. The sources therefore do not support a universal cost-per-inch winner. The room setup matters too: a projector may call for a screen or changes to reduce daylight, while the comparison also depends on the specific display models.

Which should you choose?
Choose a TV for reliable viewing in a bright room, daytime use, and a consistent picture without repositioning. Choose a portable projector when a larger, movable image is the priority and you can manage room light, surface, and placement. As LG puts it, “The best choice depends more on your viewing habits than on technical specs” (LG’s projector guide).
