They are different balance-sheet models: Bajaj Finance is a diversified non-bank lender built for faster growth and high return on equity, while HDFC Bank is a deposit-funded commercial bank whose economics depend on its deposit franchise, net interest margin, capital and credit costs. Compare sustainable, risk-adjusted growth and the price you pay—not one year of profit or a headline P/E ratio.

Start with the business-model difference
A bank and an NBFC both lend money, but their funding, liquidity and regulatory economics are not identical. Treating them as interchangeable can make a high ROE look safer than it is, or make a stable deposit franchise look slower than its compounding potential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBajaj Finance: a diversified NBFC
Bajaj Finance raises money through a mix of borrowings and market-linked sources, including securitisation. It then lends across consumer, personal, commercial and other segments. This model can support rapid product launches and customer cross-selling, but funding costs and market access matter more than they do for a bank with a large pool of deposits. Consumer-credit losses can also rise quickly when household cash flows weaken.

Its stated strategic priorities are customer centricity, technology leadership and a lowest-risk orientation. The company’s FY2026 annual report describes technology, product breadth, customer franchise and risk management as areas where it intends to lead. That is a strategy statement, not proof that every product or cycle will perform equally well; test it against delinquency, credit-cost and funding data in each filing.
HDFC Bank: a deposit-funded commercial bank
HDFC Bank’s core funding advantage is its deposit franchise. Deposits can be more stable and less sensitive to wholesale-market sentiment than an NBFC’s market borrowings, although the bank must compete for deposits and manage the interest it pays on them. Its key operating questions are net interest margin (NIM), the mix and cost of deposits, fee income, capital adequacy and credit costs across a diversified loan book.
A bank can still face sector concentrations, integration challenges and liquidity pressure. A deposit label is not a guarantee of superior returns; it changes which risks deserve the most attention.

What the FY2026 disclosures actually show
Use the following figures as a dated starting point, not as a live valuation or a forecast. Bajaj Finance reports fiscal-year numbers; HDFC Bank’s operating snapshot combines Q4 FY2026 metrics with its audited FY2026 results, so do not compare a quarter with a full year as though they were the same period.
| Metric | Bajaj Finance | HDFC Bank | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scale | FY2026 assets under management (AUM): ₹509,975 crore | Q4 FY2026 average deposits: ₹28,511 billion; average advances under management: ₹29,644 billion | Shows the size of each franchise, but the units and reporting periods differ. |
| Income | FY2026 net total income: ₹53,324 crore | Q4 FY2026 net interest margin: 3.38% | An NBFC’s net total income and a bank’s NIM are not interchangeable measures. |
| Profit | FY2026 PAT: ₹20,689 crore, excluding specified one-time items | Q4 FY2026 PAT: ₹192 billion; FY2026 audited net profit: ₹74,671.29 million versus ₹67,347.36 million in FY2025 | Check recurring profit and the period covered before calculating growth. |
| Asset quality | FY2026 GNPA: 1.01%; NNPA: 0.41% | Q4 FY2026 gross NPA: 1.15%; FY2026 net NPA: 0.38% | Compare definitions, write-offs, recoveries and product mix, not only the headline percentages. |
| Returns | FY2026 ROE: 19.2% | Q4 FY2026 ROA: 1.96%; FY2026 average ROA: 1.94% | ROE and ROA answer different questions and are affected by leverage and capital. |
| Capital | Capital-adequacy figure: not stated in the cited FY2026 facts; obtain the latest filing | Q4 FY2026 capital adequacy: 19.7% | A return comparison is incomplete without each company’s capital buffer and regulatory requirement. |
| Housing subsidiary | Bajaj Housing Finance FY2026 AUM: ₹140,706 crore, up 23% year over year; net interest income: ₹3,752 crore, up 25% | Not applicable to this comparison | Consider subsidiary growth separately from the parent’s consolidated risk and valuation. |
The figures come from Bajaj Finance’s FY2026 disclosures and investor presentation and HDFC Bank’s FY2026/Q4 FY2026 disclosures. They establish a useful baseline but do not tell you what either share costs today or what the next credit cycle will look like.
A step-by-step comparison process
1. Define the decision before opening the spreadsheets
Write down your holding period, target annual return, tolerance for a temporary drawdown and the maximum exposure you want to one financial company. A long-term investor can accept a different mix of volatility and valuation risk than someone saving for a near-term goal. Without these parameters, “better” simply means “the stock that recently performed better.”
2. Align the periods and accounting definitions
Collect the latest annual report, quarterly investor presentation and results release for both companies. Compare the same quarter with the same quarter, and the same fiscal year with the same fiscal year. Mark whether each figure is consolidated or standalone, audited or unaudited, recurring or affected by a one-time item.

Do not put Bajaj Finance’s net total income beside HDFC Bank’s NIM and call the larger number superior. For every metric, record the company’s definition, average or period-end denominator and whether securitised or assigned loans remain on the balance sheet.
3. Analyse funding and liquidity first
For HDFC Bank, examine deposit growth, the current-account and savings-account (CASA) mix, term-deposit pricing, deposit concentration and the difference between deposit growth and advances growth. A bank that grows loans faster than deposits may need more expensive wholesale funding; a bank that raises deposit rates aggressively may protect liquidity at the expense of NIM.
For Bajaj Finance, map bank loans, bonds, commercial paper, deposits where applicable, securitisation and other borrowings. Track the weighted-average cost of funds, maturity profile, liquidity buffer, unutilised committed lines and the share of assets funded by short-term liabilities. Then test what happens if market spreads widen or securitisation volumes fall.
Review the asset-liability maturity table rather than relying on a single liquidity ratio. Ask whether cash inflows from loans arrive before major refinancing dates, whether interest rates are fixed or floating on each side of the balance sheet, and how quickly management could reduce originations without damaging collections.
4. Separate growth from growth quality
Loan growth is useful only when it produces risk-adjusted profit. Break growth into products, customer cohorts, ticket sizes, geography and acquisition channel. Look for repeat usage and cross-sell from existing customers, because a mature franchise can grow with lower acquisition cost than a lender constantly buying new customers.
For Bajaj Finance, pay particular attention to unsecured consumer and personal lending, new digital products and any rapid expansion into unfamiliar segments. For HDFC Bank, examine retail, small-business, corporate and rural mixes and the effect of any integration or portfolio-transfer activity. Growth that requires faster provisioning, unusually high incentives or relaxed underwriting is lower quality even when reported AUM or advances rise.
5. Compare margins and operating efficiency on each company’s own terms
For HDFC Bank, follow NIM, yield on advances, cost of deposits, CASA, fee income and operating expense to income. A stable NIM with strong fee income can be healthier than a temporarily high NIM produced by repricing loans faster than deposits. Check whether margin movement is caused by mix, funding cost, interest reversals or accounting changes.

For Bajaj Finance, track net interest margin or spread, borrowing cost, operating expense to income and credit cost. Digital acquisition can improve scale but may also increase fraud controls, technology spending and servicing expense. Compare operating leverage over several quarters instead of assuming that every additional rupee of AUM will carry the same margin.
6. Inspect asset quality beyond GNPA and NNPA
Gross NPA measures overdue loans before provisions; net NPA deducts provisions. Neither captures every emerging problem. Read 30-day and 90-day delinquency, restructured loans, write-offs, recoveries, provisioning coverage, credit cost and slippage trends. Ask whether a lower NPA ratio reflects genuine collections or aggressive write-offs and sales.
Bajaj Finance’s consumer exposure can be more cyclical because household borrowers may cut discretionary spending quickly during job or income shocks. HDFC Bank’s diversified book spreads exposure, but it can still experience stress in particular sectors or portfolios. Compare early-delinquency movement by product, not just the consolidated ratio.
Also examine overlays and management’s expected-loss assumptions. A provision taken today lowers current profit but may protect future capital; a delayed provision can make earnings look smoother while increasing later losses.
7. Put returns beside capital, not above it
ROE is attractive only when it is repeatable and supported by adequate capital. Decompose ROE into margin, asset turnover and leverage where disclosures permit. A lender can report a high ROE by operating with thinner capital, taking more risk or benefiting from a temporary credit-cost trough.
For HDFC Bank, use the disclosed capital-adequacy ratio, risk-weighted assets, common-equity tier and internal capital generation to judge room for growth. For Bajaj Finance, obtain the latest capital-adequacy and tier-capital data before making a like-for-like conclusion; the cited FY2026 facts do not provide that figure. Check whether growth will require an equity raise that dilutes existing shareholders.
Use ROA as a cross-check. It is less distorted by leverage than ROE, but it also depends on accounting classification and the average asset denominator. A rising ROE with falling ROA can indicate that leverage, rather than better lending economics, is doing the work.

8. Value the cash flows and the expectations embedded in the price
Refresh share price, market capitalisation, price-to-book (P/B), trailing and forward P/E, dividend yield, expected earnings growth and consensus credit-cost assumptions immediately before investing. The cited disclosures do not establish current market prices or valuation multiples, so no honest comparison can name a cheaper stock without a dated market-data check.
For a financial company, P/B is meaningful only when adjusted for sustainable ROE, growth and risk. A premium P/B can be justified by durable excess returns and low losses; it becomes dangerous when growth slows or credit costs normalise. P/E can mislead at the top of a credit cycle because provisions are temporarily low. Compare a range of normalised earnings and book-value growth rather than a single trailing year.
Build a simple expectation test: if the market price assumes a particular earnings growth rate and ROE, calculate what happens when growth is lower, credit cost is higher or the terminal P/B contracts. Buy only when the return under a reasonable downside case still meets your required return.
9. Review governance, controls and execution
Read audit qualifications, related-party disclosures, contingent liabilities, regulatory correspondence and management discussion of fraud, cyber incidents and technology outages. Check whether reported targets are met without repeated definition changes. A lender’s risk culture is visible in how it explains missed targets and recognises losses, not only in optimistic presentations.
Track regulatory actions from the Reserve Bank of India and other applicable authorities, changes in senior risk leadership, significant outsourcing arrangements and customer-protection incidents. A technology-led lender and a large bank both depend on resilient systems; the failure mode may differ, but the financial impact can be material.
10. Run a three-case stress test
Create base, upside and downside cases for five years. Vary loan growth, NIM or spread, operating expense, credit cost, tax, payout and dilution. In the downside case, assume slower growth, higher delinquencies, more provisions and a higher cost of funding for Bajaj Finance; for HDFC Bank, include deposit repricing, NIM compression, sector stress and integration costs.

How to assess Bajaj Finance on its own merits
What supports the case
- The FY2026 scale and profit figures show a large, diversified lending platform with a high reported ROE.
- Technology, customer franchise and product breadth can support cross-selling and lower marginal acquisition cost if credit controls keep pace.
- The associated housing-finance business reported FY2026 AUM growth of 23% year over year and net interest-income growth of 25%, providing another growth avenue within the broader group.
- Management explicitly places risk management and a lowest-risk orientation alongside growth and technology, giving investors clear operating priorities to monitor.
What can go wrong
- Consumer and personal-loan stress can rise quickly when employment, wages or discretionary spending weaken.
- Reliance on diversified borrowing and securitisation makes the cost and availability of funding important during market stress.
- Fast product launches can create underwriting, fraud, servicing or compliance problems before loss data become visible.
- High growth can require more capital; a future equity issue or slower balance-sheet expansion can reduce per-share compounding.
The company’s FY2026 annual report states: “At Bajaj Finance, we see this not as a disruption to navigate but as our moment to lead in the expanse of our product suite, customer franchise, technology deployment and risk management.” Treat this as management’s stated ambition and test it against subsequent execution, not as an investment conclusion.
How to assess HDFC Bank on its own merits
What supports the case
- A large deposit franchise can provide a comparatively stable funding base and supports a broad set of retail, commercial and corporate products.
- The Q4 FY2026 disclosure reports capital adequacy of 19.7%, giving investors a concrete starting point for analysing growth capacity and resilience.
- Its diversified loan book can reduce dependence on any single consumer product or geography, provided concentration and sector risks remain controlled.
- Tracking NIM, CASA, fee income and credit costs gives a clear bridge from deposit gathering to shareholder returns.
What can go wrong
- Deposit competition can raise funding costs and compress NIM even when loan demand remains strong.
- Sector-specific corporate, small-business or retail stress can appear despite overall diversification.
- Integration work, portfolio migration and technology changes can create temporary costs or control failures.
- A lower-growth bank can still be a poor investment if its P/B or P/E already assumes a rapid recovery in margins and earnings.
Use a decision matrix instead of a winner-takes-all ranking
| Question | Evidence to collect | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Who funds the assets? | HDFC deposits, CASA and deposit pricing; Bajaj Finance borrowings, securitisation, maturity gaps and liquidity buffer | Prefer the model whose funding remains dependable under your stress scenario. |
| Is growth profitable? | Product-level growth, repeat customers, NIM or spread, operating expense and credit cost | Reward growth that improves risk-adjusted earnings, not volume alone. |
| Are losses controlled? | GNPA, NNPA, slippages, 30/90-day delinquencies, provisions, write-offs and recoveries | Look for early deterioration and accounting effects before headline NPA rises. |
| Can the balance sheet absorb shocks? | Capital adequacy, tier capital, leverage, liquidity and planned equity needs | Higher returns are valuable only when capital and liquidity remain resilient. |
| What is already priced in? | Current P/B, P/E, market-cap-to-earnings, expected growth and normalised credit cost | A strong business can still deliver weak returns when expectations are excessive. |
| Can management execute? | Audit comments, related parties, regulatory actions, fraud and technology incidents | Give more weight to transparent remediation than to promotional targets. |
Which investor profile may fit each company?
Bajaj Finance may fit when
You are seeking faster potential compounding, can tolerate greater sensitivity to consumer credit and non-bank funding markets, and are willing to monitor product-level delinquencies and capital needs. You must also be comfortable with valuation volatility when growth expectations change.
HDFC Bank may fit when
You prefer a large deposit-funded bank, value diversified products and strong disclosed capital, and accept that deposit pricing and NIM cycles may make growth steadier rather than spectacular. You still need to verify that the entry valuation leaves room for an adequate return.

Checklist to complete before buying
- Download the latest annual report, quarterly results and investor presentation for both companies.
- Replace the FY2026 and Q4 FY2026 figures in your worksheet with the latest available quarter, preserving each company’s definitions.
- Record the current share price, shares outstanding, market capitalisation, P/B and P/E on the same date.
- Reconcile consolidated and standalone numbers and remove one-time gains or charges from your recurring-earnings estimate.
- Compare funding costs, deposit or borrowing mix, liquidity buffers and asset-liability maturities.
- Build product-level growth and delinquency tables, including write-offs, recoveries, restructuring and provisioning coverage.
- Check capital adequacy, tier capital, leverage and any announced fund-raising or dividend plans.
- Read audit qualifications, related-party notes, regulatory actions and management commentary on fraud or technology incidents.
- Run base, upside and downside valuation cases using normalised credit costs and a conservative terminal multiple.
- Set a position size and an explicit review trigger, such as a material rise in early delinquencies, a funding shock, capital dilution or a governance breach.
Bottom line: compare the price of risk-adjusted growth
Bajaj Finance offers the more growth-oriented NBFC profile, with FY2026 disclosures showing high reported ROE and a broad lending platform. HDFC Bank offers the deposit-funded bank profile, with disclosed capital strength, diversified products and a different set of margin and funding trade-offs. The right choice depends on whether the price you can pay compensates you for each model’s specific risks.
Make the decision only after updating the latest quarter, current valuation and regulatory developments. If your stress test requires uninterrupted high growth, permanently low credit costs or a multiple that never contracts, the investment case is too fragile—regardless of which company looks better on a snapshot.
