1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most reliable way to compare ASX-listed companies is to score each one on four connected questions: Is it growing, does that growth produce durable profit and cash, can its balance sheet withstand stress, and is the share price reasonable for the quality and risks? Use the latest annual report, interim report, financial-statement notes, cash-flow statement and ASX announcements before looking at a ratio. Then compare each measure with the company’s own history and with genuinely similar businesses.
No single “good” P/E, margin or debt-to-equity figure applies to every Australian share. A bank, iron-ore producer, regulated utility and subscription-software company have different economics and sensible leverage. The comparison is useful only when you define the numerator, denominator, period, currency and accounting policy, and when you explain what could make the reported trend change.

What you are actually comparing
A share represents part ownership of a company. As ASX investor education notes, there is no guarantee that a share will rise while you own it or that the company will prosper. Your task is therefore not to find a magic ratio; it is to estimate the business’s earning power, financial resilience and price-to-quality trade-off.

| Comparison axis | Core measures | Question the measure should answer |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | Revenue, earnings per share (EPS), operating cash flow, organic growth, reinvestment | Is the business expanding, and is expansion repeatable without disproportionate capital? |
| Profitability | Gross or operating margin, net margin, return on equity (ROE) or invested capital (ROIC), cash conversion | Does each dollar of sales and invested capital produce attractive, durable returns? |
| Debt resilience | Total and net debt, debt-to-equity, interest cover, liquidity, maturities, covenants | Can the company meet obligations through a weaker cycle or higher rates? |
| Valuation | P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-book, free-cash-flow yield, dividend measures | What expectations are already embedded in the current price? |
| Quality and risk | Accounting policies, segments, related parties, auditor comments, contingencies, governance | How trustworthy and durable are the reported numbers? |
Ratios are decision aids, not forecasts. ASX explains that analysts use them to compare a company with its previous results, competitors and industry averages, while warning that data can be imperfect or already reflected in the share price.
Gather the right ASX evidence first
Do not build a comparison from an app’s summary screen alone. ASIC describes a complete financial-report package as the statement of financial position, statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity, statement of cash flows, notes, directors’ declaration, directors’ report and auditor’s report. Read the notes because they explain revenue recognition, leases, impairments, provisions, share-based payments, acquisitions and segment results.
- Download the latest annual report. Capture the audited income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement, equity movements, accounting policies, segment information and debt note.
- Read the latest interim report. Check whether the annual trend is continuing, seasonal or reversing. Note any “significant matters” and changes in guidance.
- Review ASX announcements since the interim report. Include trading updates, capital raisings, acquisitions, divestments, contract wins, production reports, dividend declarations, director transactions and changes to guidance.
- Reconcile adjusted measures. For every “underlying” or “normalised” result, identify the excluded item, its cash effect, tax treatment and whether management has excluded a similar cost repeatedly.
- Write down dates and units. Label Australian dollars, other currencies, financial-year end, LTM period, shares outstanding and whether a figure is continuing operations only.
Company filings are primary evidence; broker forecasts and data services are estimates. Keep forecasts in a separate column and never present them as reported results.
How to compare growth without being misled
Measure several kinds of growth
Record year-on-year and compound annual growth for revenue, statutory net profit, EPS and operating cash flow. EPS matters because acquisitions, buybacks and capital raisings change the number of shares. Operating cash flow matters because a profit increase that never becomes cash may reflect working-capital build-up, capitalised costs or aggressive recognition.
A simple compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is:
CAGR = (ending value ÷ beginning value)1/number of years − 1
Use the same start and end definitions for every company. A negative or near-zero starting value makes CAGR unhelpful; show the annual path instead.
Separate organic growth from purchased or price-led growth
Read acquisition notes and segment disclosures to split growth into:

Acquisition-led expansion can be sensible, but test the purchase price, integration costs, goodwill, earn-outs and incremental debt. If management reports only combined growth, ask how much would have occurred without the acquisition.

Test the cost of growth
Compare growth with capital expenditure, acquisitions, working-capital investment and share issuance. A company growing sales 20% while repeatedly issuing shares may deliver much less growth per existing share. A miner or manufacturer may require substantial sustaining capital; an asset-light service company may convert more incremental revenue into cash. Neither is automatically superior, but the capital requirement must be visible.
Look for durability, not one strong year
Map the trend against the industry cycle, customer concentration, contract duration, renewal rates, order backlog and competitive response. A commodity producer’s revenue can rise because of price rather than volume; a retailer can report strong sales while margins compress; a software company can grow subscriptions while cash collection worsens. Explain which driver is recurring and which is exposed to reversal.
How to judge profitability and cash conversion
Use margins to understand the economics
Gross margin shows economics after direct costs where the company reports a meaningful cost of sales. Operating margin shows profit after operating expenses. Net margin includes financing, tax and non-operating items. Compare the trend, not just the latest percentage, and read the reconciliation for discontinued operations and exceptional items.
Margin expansion can come from scale, pricing, mix or cost reduction; it can also come from under-investment, capitalising expenses or a temporary input-cost benefit. A falling margin is not automatically a failure if the company is deliberately investing ahead of growth, but management should identify the expected payoff and time frame.
Calculate returns on capital carefully
ROE is generally net profit divided by average shareholder equity. High debt can inflate ROE by reducing the equity base, so pair it with leverage and interest coverage. ROIC typically compares after-tax operating profit with the capital invested in operations; define whether you include leases, goodwill, excess cash and minority interests. Use the company’s stated definition only after checking that it is consistent across years.
Compare returns with the company’s cost of capital and with peers that have similar asset intensity and risk. A 25% ROE at a highly leveraged cyclical business is not equivalent to a 15% ROIC at a debt-free, recurring-revenue business.
Reconcile profit to operating cash flow
Cash conversion can be expressed as:
Operating-cash-flow conversion = operating cash flow ÷ reported net profit
Interpret the ratio over several years. A single low year may reflect inventory purchased for a known launch; persistent low conversion requires an explanation. Inspect receivables ageing, contract assets, inventory, supplier financing, provisions, capitalised development and lease payments. Free cash flow is not a universal accounting number, so define it, for example as operating cash flow less sustaining capital expenditure, and use the same definition for every company.

How to assess debt and balance-sheet resilience
Build a complete debt picture
Record total borrowings, lease liabilities, cash, restricted cash, undrawn facilities and net debt. Include debt hidden in subsidiaries or project structures where the company is responsible for obligations. Note fixed versus floating rates, currency, security, maturity dates, refinancing windows and covenant definitions.
ASX defines debt-to-equity as total debt divided by shareholder equity:
Debt-to-equity = total debt ÷ shareholder equity
Use the same treatment of leases and hybrid securities for every company. A ratio calculated with interest-bearing borrowings only may differ materially from one that includes leases.
Check serviceability, not just leverage
Interest coverage is commonly operating profit or EBITDA divided by net interest expense. State the denominator and period because EBITDA can exclude material recurring costs and interest can be affected by capitalised amounts. Also calculate debt-to-EBITDA where meaningful, but avoid applying it mechanically to banks, insurers or businesses with unusual regulatory capital structures.
- Liquidity: compare cash and committed undrawn facilities with near-term maturities and expected cash burn.
- Maturity risk: list each significant repayment and refinancing date rather than relying on a single weighted average.
- Covenant headroom: read the covenant formula, current headroom and the effect of a weaker earnings scenario.
- Rate sensitivity: estimate the cash and profit effect of higher variable rates or refinancing spreads.
- Currency exposure: identify foreign-currency debt and whether operating cash flows hedge it.
Compare leverage with similar companies. Banks, miners, utilities and software companies naturally use different balance-sheet structures; a cross-sector ranking can create false alarms or false comfort.
Stress the balance sheet
Model at least one downside case: lower revenue or commodity prices, a margin decline, slower receivables collection and higher interest rates. Check whether the company still meets covenants, funds essential capital expenditure and avoids an emergency equity raising. A balance sheet that works only under management’s central forecast is fragile.
How to compare valuation fairly
Choose a multiple that fits the business
| Measure | Formula and suitable use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| P/E | Share price ÷ EPS; useful for companies with stable, positive earnings | Distorted by cyclicality, unusual tax, leverage, buybacks and negative earnings |
| EV/EBITDA | Enterprise value ÷ EBITDA; helps compare different debt levels | Ignores capital expenditure, working capital, leases and some recurring costs |
| Price-to-book | Market capitalisation ÷ equity; often relevant to asset-heavy or financial businesses | Book values may not reflect current asset economics or intangible value |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ market capitalisation | Highly dependent on the definition of maintenance capital expenditure and cycle point |
| Dividend yield | Expected annual dividend ÷ share price | Past or declared dividends may not be sustainable; franking and payout policy matter |
ASIC cautions that market capitalisation is generally not a stand-alone fair-value estimate. Enterprise value usually adds net debt and other claims to equity value, but use the exact definition consistently. For a loss-making growth company, P/E is unavailable; revenue or gross-profit multiples may be used only with a clear path to cash generation and a closely comparable peer set.

Compare with peers and the company’s own history
Select peers with similar products, markets, cost structures, funding, growth, margins and geography. Compare current and forward multiples only when the earnings period and forecast source are clear. Then compare the company with its own historical range, explaining structural changes that make the past less comparable.

A low multiple can signal undervaluation, cyclically high earnings, governance concerns, debt risk or a shrinking market. A high multiple can reflect durable growth and returns, or simply excessive expectations. Write the expectation implied by the price: for example, “the current multiple requires sustained double-digit EPS growth and stable margins.” Do not call a share cheap or expensive without identifying the assumption that would make the conclusion wrong.
Use sensitivity analysis
ASIC stresses that valuation assumptions and sensitivity analysis should be detailed enough for users to understand the judgements involved. Vary revenue growth, operating margin, tax, capital expenditure, discount rate, terminal growth and net debt. Show a range rather than a spurious single-point target, and label every input as reported, estimated or scenario-based.

- Define the peer group. Exclude companies whose business model, geography, regulation or capital intensity makes the comparison misleading.
- Normalise the periods. Use the same financial year, LTM window, currency and continuing-operations basis.
- Enter reported history. Capture revenue, EPS, operating cash flow, margins, ROE or ROIC, debt, cash, interest and share count for at least three years where available.
- Explain changes. Tag acquisitions, disposals, currency, price, volume, impairments, restructuring, accounting-policy changes and one-off gains or losses.
- Check cash quality. Reconcile profit with operating cash flow and free cash flow; investigate persistent gaps.
- Map debt obligations. List maturities, rates, currencies, covenants, liquidity and lease commitments.
- Calculate comparable valuation. Use only metrics that fit the sector and keep definitions identical across peers.
- Read qualitative disclosures. Review segments, related parties, auditor commentary, contingent liabilities, capital expenditure and management assumptions.
- Run downside cases. Test weaker prices, lower margins, slower cash collection and higher rates.
- Write a decision memo. State the strongest evidence, the key uncertainty, the valuation assumption and the event that would invalidate the thesis.
Adjust the method for different ASX sectors
Banks and insurers
Debt-to-equity and EBITDA are not interpreted like industrial-company measures because funding is part of the operating model and regulatory capital is central. Focus on asset quality, provisioning, net interest margin, capital ratios, liquidity, underwriting results and book-value measures. Compare institutions with similar regulation and customer mix.
Miners and energy producers
Separate production volume from realised price, cash costs, sustaining capital, reserves, project capital and reclamation obligations. Use a cycle-aware valuation and stress commodity prices, exchange rates and delays. A peak-margin P/E can make a cyclical producer look deceptively cheap.
Utilities and infrastructure
Examine regulated versus contracted revenue, allowed returns, inflation linkage, capex commitments, refinancing dates and counterparty quality. High leverage may be structural, but maturity concentration and rate sensitivity still determine resilience.
Software and other growth companies
Track recurring-revenue retention, customer concentration, gross margin, sales efficiency, stock-based compensation, capitalised development and cash burn. A high revenue multiple is defensible only if growth, margins and eventual cash returns can support it.
Retailers and manufacturers
Watch comparable-store or volume growth, inventory turns, markdowns, supplier terms, lease liabilities and maintenance capital expenditure. Sales growth with rising inventory and falling cash flow can precede a profit reversal.

Quality, governance and red flags
Numbers deserve less confidence when disclosures are difficult to reconcile. Read the auditor’s report for emphasis-of-matter paragraphs, going-concern language and significant estimates. Check related-party transactions, director remuneration, unusual receivables, contingent liabilities, legal claims, environmental obligations and off-balance-sheet commitments.
Best Value
- Profit rises while operating cash flow remains weak for several periods.
- “Underlying” earnings exclude a cost that appears every year.
- Receivables or contract assets grow much faster than sales.
- Goodwill rises after acquisitions while returns on capital fall.
- Debt maturities cluster soon after the reporting date with little committed liquidity.
- Management changes non-GAAP definitions, segment boundaries or KPI labels without a clear bridge.
- Frequent equity raisings dilute EPS despite reported revenue growth.
- A single customer, commodity, contract or jurisdiction dominates results.
These are prompts for investigation, not automatic sell signals. Read the note, quantify the effect and decide whether the risk is already reflected in the price.
Portfolio context and decision discipline
A company can be attractive in isolation and still be unsuitable for a portfolio concentrated in the same sector, country or economic driver. Moneysmart presents diversification across companies, sectors, countries and asset types as a way to avoid relying on one investment. Record how a new holding changes exposure to interest rates, commodity prices, currencies, regulation and business cycles.
Before buying, write four statements:
- Business case: what durable advantage should produce growth?
- Financial case: which margin, return and cash-flow measures demonstrate quality?
- Balance-sheet case: how does the company fund a bad year?
- Valuation case: what expectations are in the price, and what evidence would disprove them?
Set review triggers rather than relying on a vague intention to “watch the stock.” Examples include a specified decline in cash conversion, a covenant breach, an acquisition outside the stated strategy, a material guidance cut or a valuation entering a range that requires unrealistic growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many years of ASX financial history should I compare?
Use at least three years and preferably five when the company has reported that long. Add the latest annual and interim periods, then explain any acquisition, disposal, accounting change or cycle break that makes earlier years less comparable.
Which valuation ratio works for every ASX sector?
None. P/E suits positive, reasonably stable earnings; EV/EBITDA helps some industrial comparisons; price-to-book can matter for financial or asset-heavy companies; and free-cash-flow yield requires a consistent definition of maintenance capital. Select the metric that matches the business model and compare it with close peers and the company’s own history.
Is a low debt-to-equity ratio always safer?
No. The ratio can exclude leases or other obligations, and a company may still face weak liquidity, short maturities or poor interest coverage. Check total and net debt, cash, covenants, refinancing dates and a stressed earnings case.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I compare a growth company’s P/E with a miner’s P/E?
Usually not without major qualification. Growth companies may have immature or negative earnings, while miners’ profits move with commodity prices. Compare companies with similar economics and stress the assumptions that drive each valuation.
