How to Compare Asian Technology Stocks Across Markets

Compare Asian technology stocks only after making their businesses, financial statements, currencies, share counts and trading access comparable. The practical sequence is: group companies by business model, normalize reporting, reconcile ADRs and share classes, separate local operating results from currency returns, apply sector-appropriate metrics, then score valuation, ownership, liquidity, governance and country risk together.

Why a simple cross-market ranking fails

A semiconductor foundry, a handset assembler, a cloud-software provider and an online marketplace can all be called “technology” while having very different economics. Their sensible margins, capital needs, growth rates and valuation multiples are not interchangeable. A single price-to-earnings ranking therefore rewards accounting and business-model differences rather than identifying the better investment.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Cross-border comparisons add another layer of distortion. Fiscal years may end in different months; one company may report under IFRS while another uses a local or modified IFRS framework; a listed receipt may represent a fraction of a home-market share; and an investor’s return in dollars, euros or another home currency can diverge sharply from the stock’s local-currency return. Free-float limits, foreign-ownership caps and thin trading can make a cheap-looking share difficult or costly to own.

The goal is not to erase every difference. It is to make each difference visible, quantify what can be normalized and carry the remaining uncertainty into the valuation and risk score.

Step 1: Define genuinely comparable businesses

Start with a peer group built around how a company makes money, not its exchange listing or a broad technology label. Put each issuer into a primary model and, where necessary, a secondary exposure.

Semiconductors and equipment

Separate foundries, integrated device manufacturers, fabless designers, memory producers, semiconductor-equipment makers and outsourced assembly and testing firms. Foundries depend on wafer utilization, process yields, customer concentration and enormous capital expenditure. Fabless designers carry more intellectual-property and product-cycle risk but usually require less manufacturing capital. Equipment companies are exposed to customer capex cycles and export controls.

Hardware and devices

Compare handset, personal-computer, networking, electronics-manufacturing and component companies with peers that share similar bill-of-materials exposure and channel structure. Revenue growth without inventory discipline or durable pricing power can be misleading in a component upcycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software and internet platforms

Distinguish subscription software, advertising platforms, enterprise services, gaming, social networks and infrastructure software. A recurring-revenue model should be evaluated through retention and customer economics, while an advertising platform needs measures such as user engagement, ad load and monetization.

E-commerce and fintech

Marketplaces, first-party retailers, payment networks, digital lenders and brokers have different revenue definitions and balance-sheet risks. A marketplace’s gross merchandise value is not revenue; a lender’s loan growth can increase credit risk rather than value.

Telecom equipment

Use peers with similar carrier exposure, contract duration, export restrictions and research-and-development intensity. Government procurement and geopolitical restrictions can matter as much as product specifications.

Write down the inclusion rule before looking at valuation. A peer set that changes whenever a multiple looks attractive creates a selection bias that no spreadsheet can fix.

Step 2: Normalize the reported numbers

Build a common data sheet before calculating ratios. Keep the original local-currency figures beside each normalized figure so that translation choices remain auditable.

Align fiscal periods

Match trailing or forecast periods by economic date, not by the label “2025” or “2026.” If one issuer’s fiscal year ends in March and another’s in December, identify the months included in each period. For fast-changing businesses, a nine-month mismatch can materially alter growth and margin comparisons. Use the latest period available for every company and disclose any remaining timing gap.

Choose a consistent currency

Store revenue, operating profit, net income and free cash flow in the reporting currency first. Translate them into a comparison currency using a stated convention: average exchange rates for income-statement flows and period-end rates for balance-sheet items are common choices. Do not mix an average-rate revenue figure with a year-end-rate profit without documenting it.

Reconcile shares and capital structure

  • Use basic or diluted shares consistently. Diluted shares should include in-the-money options, convertibles and other potential shares when the comparison uses diluted earnings.
  • Adjust historical per-share data for stock splits, consolidations, rights issues and bonus shares.
  • Identify multiple ordinary-share classes and voting differences. Economic ownership and voting control may not be the same.
  • Remove minority interests from equity-value calculations when the operating profit includes subsidiaries that are not wholly owned.
  • Define net debt consistently, stating whether leases, restricted cash, pension obligations or short-term investments are included.
  • Separate recurring operations from restructuring, impairment, litigation, disposal gains and other one-off items. Show reported and adjusted figures rather than silently replacing one with the other.

Record the accounting framework

Label each issuer as reporting under IFRS, a local framework or a modified IFRS framework. The OECD’s Equity markets: Asia Capital Markets Report 2025 notes that Asian jurisdictions differ materially in accounting adoption and implementation, raising cross-border due-diligence costs. Differences in revenue recognition, development-cost capitalization, lease treatment, impairment testing and financial-asset classification can change both earnings and book value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the accounting-policy notes for the specific issuer. A framework label is a starting point, not proof that two line items have identical economic meaning.

Step 3: Reconcile ADRs, GDRs and share classes

A depositary receipt is a claim issued in a market outside the company’s home exchange. The SEC’s Investor.gov explains: Each ADR represents one or more shares of foreign stock or a fraction of a share. The ratio must be built into every price, market-capitalization and per-share calculation.

  1. Record the depositary receipt ticker, home-market ticker and the exact ADR-to-share ratio.
  2. Convert the receipt price into an equivalent home-share price: ADR price ÷ ADR shares represented = home-share price before currency conversion.
  3. Convert the home-share price into the receipt-market currency using the same timestamp or a clearly stated reference rate.
  4. Compare the resulting value with the home-market quote, allowing for depositary fees, taxes, settlement timing, market hours and temporary premiums or discounts.
  5. Use the home-share count, not the receipt count, when calculating total equity value. Multiply receipt units by the number of underlying shares each receipt represents.

Also check whether the receipt is sponsored, which depositary handles it, where it settles and whether cancellation or creation is available. A restricted or thinly traded receipt can remain away from parity longer than a liquid one. Home-market ordinary shares may have different voting rights, foreign-ownership eligibility or dividend withholding from another listed class.

Step 4: Separate operating performance from foreign exchange

Present two return series: the company’s local-currency operating results and the investor’s translated return. A business can grow revenue and cash flow in its own currency while producing a loss in the investor’s currency if that currency depreciates. The reverse can also happen.

Three useful views

  • Local-currency growth: compares the operation without exchange-rate translation.
  • Constant-currency growth: holds exchange rates at a chosen base period to isolate underlying growth.
  • Investor-currency growth: translates reported results and share-price returns into the investor’s currency, showing the experience that matters for portfolio performance.

Explain whether the company hedges transaction exposure, where its costs are incurred, and whether cash can be converted and repatriated. A dollar-revenue exporter with local-currency costs has a different sensitivity from a domestic platform that earns and spends in the same currency. Note central-bank controls, settlement restrictions and the possibility that an official exchange rate differs from an investable offshore rate.

For valuation, keep the numerator, denominator and exchange rate consistent. A price translated at today’s spot rate should not be compared with earnings translated at a different historical rate unless the resulting distortion is intentional and disclosed.

Step 5: Use operating metrics that fit the model

Software and internet companies

  • Recurring or transaction revenue: identify how much sales repeat automatically and how much depends on new bookings or one-time activity.
  • Retention: track gross and net revenue retention where disclosed; clarify whether churn, downgrades and expansion are included.
  • Take rate: for marketplaces and payment platforms, divide recognized revenue by the relevant transaction volume, while keeping gross merchandise value separate.
  • Gross margin: compare hosting, content, payment-processing and support costs consistently.
  • Sales efficiency: relate incremental gross profit or recurring revenue to selling and marketing expenditure.
  • R&D intensity: measure research and development as a share of revenue and inspect capitalization policies.
  • Free-cash-flow conversion: compare free cash flow with operating profit or net income, explaining working-capital swings, stock-based compensation and capitalized development.
  • Customer concentration: identify dependence on a few enterprise customers, app stores, cloud providers, advertisers or distribution partners.

Hardware and semiconductor companies

  • Utilization and yields: low utilization or poor yields can compress margins before revenue declines.
  • Inventory turns and days: rising inventory can indicate a planned build, a product launch or weakening demand; read the management explanation.
  • Capital-expenditure intensity: compare capex with revenue and depreciation, distinguishing maintenance from expansion spending.
  • Design wins and product mix: assess whether new designs are durable, high-volume programs or short-lived launches.
  • Cycle exposure: map sensitivity to memory, handset, server, automotive or consumer-electronics cycles.
  • Export and supply-chain risk: identify dependence on restricted technologies, single-country production or concentrated suppliers.

Step 6: Select a valuation method that matches the economics

Every multiple should state its forecast year, currency, share count, treatment of exceptional items and whether the denominator is reported or adjusted.

Measure Best use Checks before comparing
Price/earnings Profitable companies with reasonably stable earnings Normalize tax rates, dilution, one-off items and cyclical peak or trough earnings.
EV/EBITDA Businesses where capital structure and depreciation differ but operating cash economics are comparable Define net debt, lease liabilities, minority interests and depreciation policy consistently.
EV/sales or price/sales Earlier-stage or temporarily unprofitable companies Pair the multiple with gross margin, growth, retention and a credible path to cash generation.
Free-cash-flow yield Companies with sustainable, measurable cash generation Adjust for working-capital reversals, stock compensation, maintenance capex and one-time cash receipts.

Compare valuation with growth and quality rather than declaring the lowest multiple the winner. A high-growth platform with durable retention can justify a higher sales multiple than a slower company with weak cash conversion. Conversely, a low P/E may reflect governance, ownership, regulatory or currency risk that is not visible in the earnings line.

Step 7: Adjust for ownership, free float and liquidity

Market capitalization is not the same as investable capitalization. Record the percentage of shares available to public investors, foreign-ownership headroom, average daily value traded, bid-ask spread, settlement cycle and any price-limit rules. Estimate the position’s expected market impact instead of assuming that the screen price is executable.

The STOXX Asia Technology 100 methodology uses free-float weighting, foreign-ownership adjustments and liquidity criteria. Those filters illustrate why an index weight or valuation based on all issued shares can overstate what an international investor can actually buy.

Ownership concentration is itself a risk variable. The OECD’s Asia Capital Markets Report 2026 reports that, in Asia excluding China and Japan, the three largest shareholders hold more than half of equity in 52% of listed companies, versus 44% globally. Concentrated ownership can align a controlling shareholder with long-term strategy, but it can also reduce minority influence, limit float and increase related-party or tunneling risk.

Step 8: Score governance and country risk

Read beyond a company’s investor presentation. Score the following items separately so a strong product business cannot hide a weak shareholder-protection profile.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • Related-party transactions, transfer pricing and purchases or sales involving controlling shareholders.
  • State ownership, government-directed lending and the possibility of policy objectives overriding returns.
  • Board independence, audit quality, director elections and disclosure of beneficial ownership.
  • Minority-shareholder rights, pre-emptive rights, dividend policy and the ability to challenge abusive transactions.
  • Data-localization, privacy, antitrust, content and platform regulation.
  • Export controls, sanctions, intellectual-property enforcement and restrictions on technology transfer.
  • Geopolitical concentration in customers, suppliers, fabs, data centers or logistics routes.
  • Capital controls, tax changes, dividend repatriation and foreign-exchange convertibility.

Convert the review into a documented risk adjustment rather than an unexplained discount. State which risk is being priced, what evidence would reduce it and what event would invalidate the investment case.

Step 9: Build a repeatable cross-market scorecard

Use one row per company and keep raw figures, normalized figures and qualitative judgments in separate fields. The following columns cover the minimum decision set.

Scorecard column What to record
Business model and competitive position Primary segment, peers, switching costs, network effects, capacity or product advantages.
Local-currency growth Revenue, operating profit and free-cash-flow growth with fiscal-period dates.
Common-currency growth Translated growth using the stated exchange-rate convention.
Margins and cash conversion Gross, operating and free-cash-flow margins; explain major adjustments.
Leverage and resilience Net debt, lease obligations, interest coverage, liquidity and maturity schedule.
Valuation P/E, EV/EBITDA, EV/sales or free-cash-flow yield with forecast year and assumptions.
Free float and liquidity Investable share percentage, foreign-ownership headroom, trading value and spread.
Governance Control structure, board independence, related-party exposure and minority rights.
Regulation and country risk Data, antitrust, export, sanctions, tax, capital-control and geopolitical exposures.
FX exposure Revenue and cost currencies, hedging, convertibility and repatriation constraints.

Use base, bear and bull cases

Change operating assumptions, not just the target multiple. In the base case, use the most supportable growth, margin and exchange-rate path. In the bear case, test weaker demand, lower utilization, regulatory intervention, currency depreciation, higher funding costs or a liquidity discount. In the bull case, require a specific catalyst such as a design win, utilization recovery, improved retention or a governance reform. Record the implied valuation and the probability or confidence assigned to each case.

What regional benchmarks do—and do not—tell you

The OECD’s Asia Capital Markets Report 2026 reports a 4% annualised return for Asian markets excluding Japan from 2011 to 2026, compared with 9% globally, using benchmark indices and specified dates. This is a market-level historical comparison, not a forecast for an individual technology company and not a substitute for total-return calculations that include dividends, taxes and trading costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same report says 39% of Asian companies excluding China and Japan traded below book value, versus 34% globally. A below-book statistic can signal pessimism or an opportunity, but book value is especially difficult to compare when goodwill, development costs, financial subsidiaries and asset revaluations follow different rules.

Japan and Korea value-up initiatives recorded annualised equity-market gains of 31% and 14%, respectively, after launch, according to the OECD; valuation improvements were uneven. Treat these figures as event-period observations. They do not prove that every company in either market benefited or that the gains will persist.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Ranking unadjusted P/E ratios

Problem: fiscal timing, one-off earnings and currency differences make the ranking artificial.
Correction: align periods, normalize exceptional items and show the forecast year and translation rate.

Ignoring the ADR ratio

Problem: the receipt appears dramatically cheaper or more expensive than the home share.
Correction: convert price, share count and market capitalization through the exact depositary ratio before comparing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating revenue growth as operating quality

Problem: growth may come from low-margin volume, acquisitions, inventory loading or credit expansion.
Correction: pair growth with margins, retention, working capital, leverage and free-cash-flow conversion.

Using translated figures without FX context

Problem: currency moves are mistaken for operational improvement or deterioration.
Correction: show local, constant-currency and investor-currency results separately.

Assuming issued shares are investable

Problem: controlling holders, state stakes or foreign-ownership caps reduce the practical float.
Correction: apply free-float and foreign-ownership adjustments and test liquidity for the intended position size.

Discounting governance as a vague “country risk”

Problem: a broad label hides the specific event that could damage value.
Correction: identify the transaction, regulation, control right or convertibility issue and model its financial effect.

A practical review workflow

  1. Define the business model and write the peer-inclusion rule.
  2. Collect filings for the same economic period and record each accounting framework.
  3. Normalize currency, fiscal dates, shares, splits, ADR ratios, minority interests, net debt and exceptional items.
  4. Calculate sector-appropriate operating metrics before opening the valuation tab.
  5. Translate results into the investor’s currency while preserving local-currency data.
  6. Apply valuation methods that match profitability, capital intensity and cash-generation reliability.
  7. Adjust for free float, foreign-ownership limits, liquidity and expected execution cost.
  8. Score governance, regulation, country and geopolitical exposures.
  9. Run base, bear and bull cases and document the assumptions that change the outcome.
  10. Set a review trigger for new filings, exchange-rate moves, ownership changes, regulatory actions and liquidity deterioration.
