The reliable way to compare an IT consulting company with competitors is to normalize four things before ranking anyone: the peer set, the reporting period and currency, the source of growth, and the definition of margin. Show reported, constant-currency and organic growth separately; reconcile acquisitions and divestitures; place gross, GAAP operating and adjusted operating margins in different columns; and explain segment mix before drawing a conclusion.
A company can lead on reported growth because it bought a large business, while another produces stronger organic growth. A firm with a higher gross margin may still have a lower operating margin because it spends more on sales, research or integration. The scorecard below is designed to keep those differences visible instead of hiding them in a single ranking.

1. Define what you are comparing
Start by writing a one-sentence scope statement. For example: “Compare full-year 2025 results for publicly traded firms that sell consulting, systems integration, managed services or closely related technology services to similar customers in North America and Europe.” This sentence fixes the period, geography, customer type and service boundary before you collect numbers.
Do not select peers simply because they are large. Size changes purchasing power and delivery economics, but it does not make two businesses comparable. A global systems integrator, a specialist engineering consultancy and a staffing-heavy government contractor can all report “IT services” while having very different revenue and margin profiles.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Build a matched peer set
Choose companies with overlapping work, customers and delivery models. For a broad technology-services firm, a defensible starting set can include Accenture, Atos, Capgemini, CGI, Deloitte Digital, DXC, EPAM, Genpact, HCL, IBM Consulting, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro, all identified as direct competitors in Cognizant’s 2025 Form 10-K. Remove any company that fails your stated service or geography test, and document why each remaining peer stays in the set.
- Services: Separate advisory and implementation consulting from application management, infrastructure operations, staffing and product revenue.
- Customers: Mark commercial, public-sector and mixed portfolios. Government contracts can have different labor rules, funding cycles and margin ceilings.
- Geography: Record the main billing and delivery regions. Currency exposure and wage structures differ materially between a primarily domestic firm and an offshore-enabled global provider.
- Scale: Use scale as a context variable, not as the selection rule. A smaller specialist may have faster growth but a narrower customer base.
Keep a written inclusion rule and apply it consistently. Changing the peer set after seeing the results creates a favorable but non-repeatable comparison.
2. Lock the period and currency
Use the same fiscal year or the same trailing-twelve-month window for every company. Fiscal years do not all end on the same date, so record each company’s year-end and the number of months covered. Do not place one company’s calendar-year results beside another company’s nine-month results and call the difference performance.
Show reported and constant-currency growth
Reported growth is the change in the currency used in the financial statements. Constant-currency growth attempts to remove the effect of exchange-rate movements so that operating performance can be compared more directly. Both are useful, but they answer different questions and must appear in separate columns.
Cognizant reported 2025 revenue of $21.108 billion and said revenue increased 7.0% on a reported basis or 6.4% in constant currency (Cognizant, 2025). Accenture reported 6% U.S.-dollar consulting growth and 5% local-currency consulting growth for fiscal 2025 (Accenture, FY2025). These figures are not interchangeable: Cognizant’s percentages describe company revenue, while Accenture’s figures describe consulting growth.
When a company provides only a constant-currency percentage, do not infer its reported rate. When it provides only a reported rate, leave the constant-currency cell as “not stated” and cite the filing or earnings release used. Currency adjustments can be calculated in different ways, so use management’s definition where available rather than applying your own exchange-rate model.
Make the currency conversion transparent
Keep each company’s reported figures in its presentation currency, then add a separate comparison column in a common currency if needed. State the exchange-rate convention, such as average annual rate for income-statement items or period-end rate for balance-sheet items. Never mix an average-rate revenue conversion with a period-end margin calculation without labeling the difference.

Use a bridge rather than a single percentage
A practical bridge is:
Reported growth ≈ constant-currency organic growth + acquisition contribution − divestiture effect + other disclosed items + currency effect
The components may not add perfectly because companies use different bases, rounding and definitions. Preserve the company’s own reconciliation and explain any residual rather than forcing the arithmetic to balance.
Cognizant said its Belcan acquisition contributed 260 basis points, or 2.6 percentage points, to 2025 revenue growth (Cognizant, 2025). Its investor supplement reported 3.8% constant-currency organic growth for the same year. Those disclosures show why the 7.0% reported growth rate should not be treated as purely organic expansion. The acquisition contribution and organic rate answer different questions: one describes the effect of purchased revenue, the other the performance of the continuing business after currency effects.
Measure acquisition dependence
Calculate acquisition contribution as a share of total constant-currency growth when the necessary figures are disclosed:
Acquisition share of growth = acquisition contribution in percentage points ÷ total constant-currency growth
Using Cognizant’s disclosed 260-basis-point Belcan contribution and 6.4% constant-currency growth gives an approximate 41% share. Label this as an analytical ratio based on the company’s disclosed components, not as a management-reported metric. If an acquisition closed partway through the year, note that the first-year contribution reflects only the months owned and may not represent a full run rate.
Also inspect the purchase accounting and integration notes. Acquired revenue can arrive with different gross margins, utilization, customer concentration and billing models. A deal that adds sales but lowers operating margin may still be strategically sound, but it should not be described as equivalent to internally generated growth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTrack divestitures and discontinued activities
A sale can make continuing-operations growth appear stronger or weaker depending on the size and timing of the divestiture. Use continuing-operations figures where the company provides them, and record the disposal date. Do not compare a restated prior year with an unadjusted current year.

4. Choose the margin that matches the question
Margins measure different layers of economics. The denominator is generally revenue, but the costs removed from revenue change by metric.
| Metric | What it includes | What it helps answer | Common comparability warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | Revenue minus direct delivery or cost-of-services expenses | How profitable the delivery engine is before corporate overhead | Cost classification differs; some firms place more delivery management or depreciation above gross profit |
| GAAP operating margin | Operating income under applicable accounting rules, after SG&A and other operating costs | What the reported business earned from operations | Includes restructuring, amortization and other operating charges recognized under GAAP |
| Adjusted operating margin | Operating income after management-defined exclusions | How management views ongoing operating performance | Exclusions are not standardized and may include recurring or cash costs |
Never compare one company’s gross margin with another company’s operating margin. Even two gross margins may not be fully comparable if one company classifies subcontractors, implementation travel or stock-based compensation differently.
Example of gross-margin context
ASGN reported a 28.9% consolidated gross margin in both 2025 and 2024, and a 32.8% commercial gross margin in 2025 (ASGN, 2025). The commercial figure is a segment measure, while the consolidated figure covers the broader company. Put them in separate rows or columns and identify the scope; do not use the commercial percentage as a proxy for the entire business.
5. Keep GAAP and adjusted operating margins in separate columns
GAAP (or the relevant statutory accounting standard outside the United States) is the reported accounting measure. Adjusted operating margin is a non-GAAP measure built from management’s reconciliation. Display both, then list every adjustment in a notes column.
Cognizant reported a 16.1% GAAP operating margin and a 15.8% adjusted operating margin in 2025 (Cognizant, 2025). Accenture reported a 14.7% operating margin and a 15.6% adjusted operating margin for fiscal 2025 (Accenture, FY2025). The direction of the difference is not the same: Cognizant’s adjusted figure was lower than its GAAP figure, while Accenture’s was higher. That is why a ranking based only on “adjusted margin” can reverse the ranking based on reported operating income.
Build an adjustment ledger
For each peer, record the description, amount, tax treatment if provided, and whether the item is cash or non-cash. Typical categories include:
- Restructuring and workforce-reduction charges
- Acquisition-related transaction and integration costs
- Amortization of acquired intangible assets
- Foreign-exchange gains or losses
- Optimization, transformation or facility-exit costs
- Stock-based compensation, if the company excludes it
Do not assume that an item described as “one-time” will occur only once. Compare the last three to five years of reconciliations and flag categories that recur. A recurring restructuring charge may still be economically relevant to the owner of the business even if management excludes it from adjusted results.

Margin change in basis points = (current margin − prior margin) × 100
If operating margin moves from 15.0% to 15.8%, the increase is 80 basis points. Keep the same metric on both sides of the calculation; do not calculate a change from GAAP in one year to adjusted in the next.
6. Explain mix before judging performance
Consolidated growth and margin can conceal divergent businesses. Break results into the dimensions the company discloses, then compare like with like.

Separate consulting, systems integration, application management, infrastructure or other managed services. Managed-services contracts often have recurring revenue and different utilization and pricing dynamics from project consulting. A company with slower consulting growth but a larger recurring base may have more predictable revenue than a faster-growing project business.
Commercial versus government
Public-sector work can be affected by appropriations, contract ceilings and procurement timing. ASGN’s 2025 consulting revenue was $2.5 billion, up 5.1%; commercial consulting rose 14.4% while federal consulting fell 3.3% (ASGN, 2025). The consolidated 5.1% rate therefore masks a substantial split in end-market performance.
Industry and customer concentration
Compare exposure to financial services, health care, manufacturing, communications, retail and public-sector customers where disclosed. Record the largest-customer share, renewal rates or backlog only when the company reports them on a comparable basis. A peer with faster growth driven by one customer or one industry may have less resilience than its headline rate suggests.
Geography and delivery model
Note onshore, nearshore and offshore delivery proportions, local wage inflation, utilization and subcontractor dependence. A higher offshore share can support gross margin, but it also introduces currency, attrition and geopolitical risks. Do not infer delivery mix from a company’s headquarters location; use the geographic and workforce disclosures.
7. Use a repeatable competitor scorecard
Create one row per company and one column per normalized metric. The following layout keeps growth, profitability, quality and resilience visible at the same time.
Best Value
| Company | Reported revenue growth | Constant-currency growth | Organic growth | Acquisition contribution | Gross margin | GAAP operating margin | Adjusted operating margin | Margin change (basis points) | Segment and one-time-item notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cognizant | 7.0% in 2025 | 6.4% in 2025 | 3.8% constant-currency organic growth in 2025 | Belcan contributed 260 basis points to 2025 revenue growth | Not stated in the cited 2025 figures | 16.1% in 2025 | 15.8% in 2025 | Calculate from the prior-year filing using the same definition | Revenue was $21.108 billion; acquisition and organic components should be shown separately |
| Accenture | 6% U.S.-dollar consulting growth in FY2025 | 5% local-currency consulting growth in FY2025 | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | 14.7% in FY2025 | 15.6% in FY2025 | Calculate from the prior-year fiscal-2025 comparison using the same definition | Growth figures are for consulting, not necessarily total company revenue |
| ASGN | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | 28.9% consolidated in 2025 and 2024; 32.8% commercial in 2025 | Not stated in the cited figures | Not stated in the cited figures | Calculate only when comparable operating-margin data is collected | Consulting revenue was $2.5 billion, up 5.1%; commercial +14.4%, federal −3.3% |
“Not stated” means the cited figures do not establish a comparable value; it is not an invitation to substitute an estimate. Add source date and page or section references in your internal workbook so another analyst can reproduce each cell.
Rank only after definitions align
Use a two-stage ranking. First, filter out mismatched metrics: total-company growth versus consulting-only growth, gross versus operating margin, or calendar year versus fiscal year. Second, rank the aligned measures. If definitions remain different, present separate leaderboards instead of forcing a composite score.
A weighted score can be useful for an internal decision, but publish the weights. For example, you might assign equal weight to constant-currency organic growth, GAAP operating margin, adjusted operating-margin change and a resilience assessment. The weights are a judgment, not an accounting fact, so show how changing them affects the result.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →8. Interpret the four comparison axes
Growth
Ask whether growth is reported, constant-currency or organic; whether it covers total revenue or one segment; and whether the period is full year or trailing twelve months. A narrow gap between reported and constant-currency growth suggests limited currency impact, while a large gap requires a currency explanation before performance is judged.
Profitability
Compare gross margin for delivery economics, GAAP operating margin for reported profitability and adjusted operating margin for management’s operating view. Examine margin direction, not only the level. A company gaining 80 basis points from better utilization may be improving more sustainably than one whose margin rose because of a temporary cost reversal.
Quality of growth
Estimate how much growth came from acquisitions, recurring managed-services contracts and price or volume changes when disclosed. Acquisition-heavy growth deserves a separate integration and retention review. Organic growth supported by renewals and broad customer demand is generally a different risk profile from growth concentrated in purchased revenue, even when the percentages match.
Resilience
Review customer concentration, industry mix, geographic diversification, government exposure, delivery locations and contract duration. Resilience is not a single ratio. Document the evidence and the uncertainty rather than turning it into an unsupported numeric score.

9. A practical workflow for analysts
- Write the scope. Specify services, geographies, customer segments, fiscal period and whether the analysis covers total company or a segment.
- Collect primary statements. Use annual reports, 10-K or equivalent filings, investor supplements and earnings materials for each peer.
- Build a raw-data sheet. Capture revenue, operating income, gross profit, segment revenue, reported growth, constant-currency growth and management reconciliations without changing the labels.
- Normalize definitions. Mark whether each number is GAAP, adjusted, reported, local-currency, constant-currency, organic, segment or consolidated.
- Construct the growth bridge. Add acquisition, divestiture and currency effects, and identify any unexplained residual.
- Calculate margins and basis-point changes. Use revenue from the same scope and period as the numerator’s income measure.
- Annotate mix. Add service, industry, geography, commercial-government and delivery-model notes beside the numerical ranking.
- Run sensitivity checks. Re-rank after excluding acquisition contribution, using GAAP instead of adjusted margin, and separating commercial from government work.
- Write the conclusion. State which company leads on each aligned axis and why no single overall winner follows if the metrics conflict.
10. Common errors and how to correct them
- Comparing different scopes: Replace total-company revenue with consulting-only revenue, or vice versa, so both sides cover the same business.
- Using currency-adjusted growth as if it were reported growth: Show both labels and preserve management’s definition.
- Calling all growth organic: Subtract disclosed acquisition and divestiture effects and identify the remaining organic rate.
- Mixing gross and operating margin: Put the metric name in every table heading and calculate separate rankings.
- Hiding adjustments: Add an adjustment ledger and test whether the same category recurs each year.
- Ignoring mix: Split commercial and government, consulting and managed services, and major industries before interpreting a consolidated result.
- Comparing fiscal periods casually: Record year-end dates and use a common trailing-twelve-month window when fiscal years are not aligned.
- Overstating precision: Preserve the company’s rounding and write “approximately” for ratios derived from rounded percentage points.
11. How to present the final judgment
Use a short narrative alongside the scorecard. Identify the leader on reported growth, then state whether that lead remains after constant-currency and organic adjustments. Identify the leader on GAAP operating margin, then explain how the adjusted figure changes the view. Finish with the mix and resilience factors that could make the numerical ranking less durable.
For example, a defensible conclusion might say that one company leads reported growth but receives a material acquisition contribution, another leads organic growth, and a third has the strongest delivery gross margin. That is more informative than declaring a single winner from one percentage.
Cognizant’s filing describes competition as being influenced by reputation and experience, strategic advisory capabilities, digital and AI capabilities, performance and reliability, responsiveness to customer needs, financial stability, corporate governance and competitive pricing. Those factors explain why financial metrics should be read with service mix and customer positioning rather than treated as a complete competitive analysis.
Quick Recap
12. What a good comparison should let a reader answer
- Which peers actually sell comparable services to comparable customers?
- Did each company grow on a reported, constant-currency or organic basis?
- How many percentage points of growth came from acquisitions or divestitures?
- Is the margin being compared gross, GAAP operating or adjusted operating?
- What adjustments separate GAAP from adjusted results, and do they recur?
- Which segments, geographies and customer groups produced the growth?
- Would the ranking change if acquisition-driven growth or government work were separated?
- What risks to customer, industry, geographic or delivery concentration could weaken the result?
