A discount badge or lower headline price alone does not settle the question.
1. Confirm you are comparing the same item
Start with the product’s brand and model number, then check its size, color, quantity, condition, and included accessories. Similar-looking products may be different variants, and a retailer-exclusive model may not be directly comparable.

2. Compare the checkout cost, not just the displayed price
For each retailer, record the item price and add shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes where shown, and any other applicable fees. Note conditions attached to the offer: a coupon, membership, bundle, minimum purchase, or other requirement may be needed to get the advertised amount. The FTC recommends checking the total cost and reading the deal terms.

- Record whether a coupon must be selected or entered.
- Check whether the price requires a membership or a qualifying purchase.
- Include shipping and other charges, and compare taxes when the retailer displays them.
- Check whether the stated delivery option changes the cost or arrival date.
3. Put the Amazon price in context
On eligible product pages in the U.S., UK, and India, Amazon says shoppers can view 30-, 90-, and 365-day price-history periods. Check the available history on the specific listing: the feature is not guaranteed on every product page. A longer view can help show whether the current offer is near a recent low, but it does not establish that the price is the best available across retailers. Amazon describes the feature in its price-history announcement.
Treat a “was” price, list price, or strikethrough amount as context rather than proof of a bargain. Under U.S. FTC guidance, an advertised former price is a legitimate comparison point when it was a bona fide price offered regularly for a reasonably substantial period. The FTC’s regulation, 16 CFR § 233.1(a), says: “If the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time, it provides a legitimate basis for the advertising of a price comparison.” This is U.S. federal guidance; rules elsewhere may differ. Compare the live offers and available price history rather than relying on the claimed discount alone.

4. Check the seller, fulfillment, and purchase terms
On Amazon, distinguish an offer sold by Amazon from one sold by a marketplace seller. Record who sells and fulfills the item, its condition and stock status, the delivery promise, and the return terms. Amazon says its selling partners independently set prices, shipping fees, delivery promises, and return policies; its cited explanation concerns Amazon Europe, so details may vary across marketplaces. Compare warranty coverage, return window, and any bundle or minimum-purchase condition at each store. A slightly higher offer may be preferable if its terms better fit your needs; weigh those terms explicitly instead of treating unlike offers as identical.

5. Verify comparison results and price-match rules
Comparison sites can help you find candidate offers, but their listings may be sponsored, incomplete, or out of date. Open the retailer’s own product page and confirm the exact model, current price, seller, availability, shipping, and terms before buying.
Do not assume a store will match Amazon’s price. Policies vary by retailer and channel, and eligibility can depend on the exact item and who sells or fulfills it. For example, Target’s price-match policy allows qualifying matches for certain identical products sold and fulfilled by Amazon or Walmart, subject to its conditions and exclusions. Walmart’s U.S. policy says it does not match competitor prices for purchases on Walmart.com; see Walmart’s price-matching policy. Check the current policy for the relevant store and channel before relying on a match.

A practical comparison checklist
- Identity: brand, model, variant, size, color, quantity, condition, and included accessories.
- Total cost: item price, discounts and their conditions, shipping, fees, and taxes where shown.
- Price context: Amazon’s available history and whether the reference price reflects a genuine prior offer.
- Fulfillment: seller, fulfiller, stock status, delivery estimate, and shipping cost.
- Terms: returns, warranty, bundles, minimum purchase, and any applicable price-match or adjustment policy.
- Verification: current details on the retailer’s own listing, not just a comparison-site result.
