Neither connection is universally better: the right choice depends on the ports and features on your exact TV and speaker. A wired AUX connection works only when the TV has an analog audio output and the speaker has a matching AUX input. Bluetooth works only if the TV can transmit audio to Bluetooth speakers, and lip sync can vary. If you want to use Echo speakers, distinguish Echo Input from Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater setup: they are different ways to connect audio.
First, check what “AUX input” means
An AUX input receives audio; it is not an AUX output. Amazon’s Echo Input setup describes connecting Echo Input to an external speaker’s AUX input with a 3.5 mm cable, or pairing it with a Bluetooth speaker. That does not establish that an Echo speaker has an analog output for a TV to use. Amazon describes Echo Input as a way to add Alexa to an external speaker: Echo Input setup and Echo Input overview.

So, do not choose a TV connection based on the words “Echo with AUX” alone. Check the actual ports on both devices. A speaker’s AUX input is useful only if the TV or another source can send analog audio out to it.

This is a compatibility comparison, not a sound-quality or latency test. Amazon documents pairing an external Bluetooth speaker with an Echo through the Alexa app, but that does not mean every TV can transmit audio to Bluetooth speakers. Echo Input connects to another speaker
Echo Input is the Amazon-documented case for using an Echo device with an external speaker’s AUX input or Bluetooth connection. Amazon’s instructions say to connect the cable to Echo Input first, then to the speaker’s AUX input; for Bluetooth, pair the external speaker after setup. This is not the same as connecting a TV to an Echo speaker by AUX.
Alexa Home Theater uses compatible Echo and Fire TV devices
Amazon’s documented Echo-based TV audio route is Alexa Home Theater, which pairs specific Echo speakers with compatible Fire TV devices. Compatibility is model- and generation-specific; it is not a general feature of every Echo or Fire TV. Check Amazon’s current Alexa Home Theater compatibility and setup guide before relying on a particular combination. The guide includes newer devices such as Echo Studio (2025 release) and Echo Dot Max with certain Fire TV models, alongside older supported combinations.

HDMI ARC can include TV and other HDMI-source audio
For eligible combinations, Amazon says a Fire TV and Echo setup connected through the TV’s HDMI ARC port can play audio from the TV and other HDMI sources, such as a game console. The exact Fire TV and Echo models matter, and the TV must support HDMI ARC. Amazon’s instructions also call out enabling ARC/CEC and adjusting audio-format settings where appropriate. Amazon also documents TV-audio routing for supported Fire TV smart TVs; that setup requires Wi-Fi and devices assigned to the same room. Its listed Fire TV setup path can combine a compatible Fire TV with up to two compatible Echo devices and an optional Echo Sub. How to choose for your setup
- Identify the exact TV model. Check its manual for analog audio outputs, Bluetooth audio-output support, and HDMI ARC support. A headphone jack or other analog output is not guaranteed on every TV.
- Check the speaker’s actual inputs. Confirm it accepts AUX audio or Bluetooth. Do not infer a port from the word “Echo” or from another Echo generation.
- If using Alexa Home Theater, verify both model generations. Match the exact Fire TV and Echo models against Amazon’s current compatibility list and follow the configuration for that combination.
- Test dialogue sync before settling on Bluetooth or Home Theater. Bluetooth delay varies by device, and Amazon provides a lip-sync adjustment in Fire TV’s Alexa Home Theater setup. The available documentation does not establish a universal AUX-versus-Bluetooth latency advantage.
- Choose based on the working connection and practical setup. Use AUX when matching analog ports are available and a cable is acceptable; use Bluetooth when both devices support the required audio direction and the delay is acceptable; choose Alexa Home Theater when your Fire TV and Echo combination is explicitly supported.
