The reliable way to tell whether Albertsons, Walmart, Kroger or Aldi is cheapest is to compare one identical basket at the same local store context. Record the exact brand, package size, advertised price, loyalty price, coupon requirement, stock status and pickup or delivery charge. Convert every item to a common unit, apply only discounts you can actually use, add travel and service costs, and check the result again on shopping day.
Why there is no universal cheapest grocery chain
Grocery prices vary by city, store, week, inventory and promotion. A chain that is least expensive for pantry staples may cost more for produce or meat in your neighborhood. A weekly-ad deal can also require a loyalty account, a clipped digital coupon, a minimum quantity or a specific shopping date.

That is why broad statements such as “Albertsons is cheaper than Walmart” or “Aldi always wins” are poor shopping advice. Your answer depends on your basket and the total cost of getting it home. Use the June 2024 Online Grocery Pricing Study only as historical context: its online sample found Kroger prices 5.3% above Walmart and Safeway, an Albertsons banner, 21.6% above Walmart. The study did not establish a comparable Aldi figure, and its results are not a current nationwide ranking. Local promotions, basket mix, fees and stock can reverse that order.
Set up a fair, repeatable comparison
1. Freeze the basket before opening an app
Write every item before checking prices. Include the required brand, flavor, grade, organic status, package count and size. Decide which substitutions are acceptable. A 12-ounce package and a 16-ounce package are not equivalent just because both are labeled “family size.”
For flexible items, define the rule in advance: for example, “any salted butter, 1 pound,” or “store-brand long-grain rice, 5 pounds.” For brand-required items, record the exact product name and barcode or description so every retailer is showing the same thing.

2. Use the same local store context
Set the same ZIP code, delivery address or store radius at all four retailers. Select the actual Albertsons, Walmart, Kroger and Aldi locations you could realistically visit. A weekly ad is store-specific, and online prices can change when you switch stores or accounts.
Capture the date and time, because ads, stock and coupon eligibility change. Save a screenshot or the product page address for any unusually low price so you can verify it at checkout.

Do not write down only the large sale number. Record the shelf or base price, the advertised price, the loyalty-account price, the coupon value and the conditions attached to each offer. Note whether the discount applies once, up to a stated quantity or only after buying multiple units.

Check each retailer’s price and promotion system
Albertsons
Start with the local weekly ad, then sign in to Albertsons for U before comparing the item list. The program presents personalized deals and points; points can be redeemed for cash off or grocery discounts. Pickup and delivery may be offered, with fees and minimum-order rules shown for the selected store and time slot.
Because the weekly-ad page uses a store context, confirm that your actual store is selected. A deal visible for one location may not appear at another. Record whether the displayed amount is the standard price, an Albertsons for U price or a clipped offer.
Walmart
Open the local Walmart grocery listing and choose the exact item, size and fulfillment method you would use. Compare pickup with delivery separately: the item price, substitutions, minimum order and service charges can differ. Do not assume a national loyalty or fee rule when the local checkout screen is the evidence available to you.

If Walmart shows several package sizes, use the same size as the other stores or convert each one to a unit price. A lower ticket price on a smaller package is not a lower cost for the same quantity.
Kroger
Open the local weekly ad and sign in to the digital account. Kroger’s weekly-ad pages show digital deals, and some offers require you to clip them before checkout. The account can also display personalized coupons and special offers.
Check quantity limits and purchase conditions line by line. A multi-buy price may require two or more units; if your list needs only one, use the single-unit eligible price. Keep the clipped-offer status in your notes so another shopper can reproduce the comparison.
Aldi
Use the Weekly Specials page, its clickable weekly ad, Price Drops and Aldi Finds listings. Item-level prices may be shown as a per-pound amount alongside an estimated package price, which helps with variable-weight products.

Treat them as availability-sensitive: verify that your store has the product before counting the advertised price in a planned basket. If the item is absent, price the substitute you defined before starting.
Convert every item to a common unit
Package price is not enough when sizes differ. Calculate the cost per ounce, pound, count, load or another unit that fits the product.

unit price = package price ÷ ouncesorpackage price ÷ pounds. - Count:
unit price = package price ÷ number of items. - Laundry: use price per load, not the bottle’s total price.
- Paper products: compare sheets or square feet when roll counts and sheet counts differ.
- Produce and meat: compare the same grade and use the displayed per-pound price; include an estimated package total only when the listing supplies one.
For an illustrative calculation, a 12-ounce package priced at $3 has a unit price of $0.25 per ounce; a 16-ounce package at $3.60 is $0.225 per ounce. The second package costs more at the shelf but less for each ounce. This arithmetic is a method example, not a reported retailer price.
Match organic certification, grade, flavor, count and package type before declaring a winner. “Per pound” for conventional ground beef is not directly comparable with “per pound” for organic or premium-grade beef.

After normalizing units, calculate the price you would actually pay:
- Add each item’s eligible price after applying only discounts available to your account.
- Add delivery, service, pickup, small-order and bag charges shown at checkout.
- Add fuel, parking, transit or other travel costs for the selected stores.
- Record minimum-order rules, delivery windows and any coupon quantity limits.
- Check whether a substitution changes the size, brand or unit price.
Use two totals when promotions are conditional: a base basket without loyalty or clipped coupons and an eligible basket using the offers you can claim. This shows how much of the difference depends on membership or digital work rather than the shelf price.
For online orders, the final cart is the authority. An item page may show a promotion that disappears after you change stores, choose delivery or exceed a quantity limit.
Decide whether a split shop is worth it
A split shop wins only when the savings exceed the cost of the extra stop. First identify the cheapest eligible price for each item. Then group the list by store and calculate the additional distance, travel time, parking and mental effort.

Give your time a consistent value if you want a rigorous calculation. For example, multiply the extra minutes by the hourly value you use for household tasks, then add fuel or transit. If the second store saves less than that combined cost, the single-store basket is economically cheaper even when individual items cost more.
Use the 2024 benchmark carefully
The June 2024 Online Grocery Pricing Study reported an online-sample premium of 5.3% for Kroger versus Walmart and 21.6% for Safeway, an Albertsons banner, versus Walmart. Those percentages describe that study’s basket, locations and measurement period. They do not establish today’s prices, a national Albertsons result or an Aldi ranking.

Recheck on shopping day
Prices and inventory can change between planning and checkout. Reopen each weekly ad, confirm the selected store, verify that digital coupons are still clipped and check the cart for changed fees. If a promotion expired, replace it with the current eligible price rather than preserving the old number in your comparison.
At pickup or delivery, inspect substitutions and weighted items. A substituted size or variable-weight package can change the unit price and the basket total. Accept the replacement only if it meets the substitution rule you set when freezing the basket.

Keep a price book for repeat purchases
A notebook or spreadsheet makes future comparisons faster. Record the product, normalized unit price, store, date, promotion condition and stock note. A price book organized by price per ounce, pound or unit lets you recognize a genuine bargain without relying on memory.

Update entries when package size, formulation or grade changes. A lower number is not a real improvement if the new package contains fewer ounces or a different product.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Comparing different package sizes
Problem: choosing the lowest sticker price. Fix: divide price by ounces, pounds, count or loads and compare equivalent quantities.

Counting a coupon you cannot use
Problem: treating a personalized or clipped offer as a public price. Fix: sign in, clip the offer and record its quantity, date and account requirements before using the discounted figure.
Ignoring fees and travel
Problem: selecting a store because its item subtotal is lowest. Fix: add delivery, pickup, service, small-order, fuel, parking and transit costs to obtain the landed total.
Using a different store for each chain
Problem: comparing a sale at one location with a regular price at another. Fix: use the same ZIP code or a realistic store radius and identify each exact location.
Assuming an advertised item is available
Problem: building a basket around an Aldi Find or another limited item that is sold out. Fix: check stock and apply your prewritten substitution rule; then recalculate the unit and basket prices.
A practical decision rule
- Freeze one identical basket and define substitutions.
- Collect local base and eligible prices from Albertsons, Walmart, Kroger and Aldi.
- Normalize every item to a common unit and verify equivalent quality and size.
- Add all account conditions, quantity limits, service charges and travel costs.
- Choose the single-store or split-shop plan with the lowest landed total that you can realistically complete.
- Recheck the result on shopping day and keep the date-stamped record for next time.
Bottom line
Albertsons is not automatically more or less expensive than Walmart, Kroger or Aldi. The defensible answer comes from one local, identical basket priced per unit, with only eligible promotions applied and every fee and extra trip counted. Historical online benchmarks can provide context, but your store, your coupons and your shopping day determine the winner.
