How to Compare Airline Stocks Using Earnings, Margins, and Operating Costs

The most useful airline-stock comparison combines reported earnings with unit economics. Start with operating revenue, operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share, then normalize each carrier by available seat miles (ASM). Compare revenue per ASM (RASM) with cost per ASM (CASM), use CASM excluding fuel to examine non-fuel execution, and test whether margins can survive changes in fuel prices, wages, capacity and interest expense. A low CASM or high margin is not automatically superior if it reflects a different network, unusually favorable fuel costs, weaker service or underinvestment.

What you are actually comparing

An airline stock represents a claim on future cash flows, not just the latest quarterly profit. Two carriers can report similar net income while facing very different fuel exposure, labor contracts, aircraft commitments, route economics and balance-sheet risk. A sound comparison therefore has five connected parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Reported earnings: revenue, operating income, operating margin, net income and diluted EPS.
  • Unit economics: RASM, CASM and, where available, CASM excluding fuel.
  • Revenue quality: load factor, yield, premium-cabin and ancillary revenue, cargo mix and capacity growth.
  • Cost and margin durability: labor, fuel, maintenance, airport fees, ownership costs and the ability to hold a spread through different conditions.
  • Financial and operating risk: debt, liquidity, aircraft commitments, fleet transitions, reliability and network concentration.

The goal is not to crown a permanent “best” airline. It is to identify which carrier is producing an attractive operating spread, why that spread exists and how much of it is likely to remain after normal costs and financing obligations are recognized.

Start with the reported income statement

Collect the same period and the same accounting basis for every carrier. Use audited annual reports when possible, then use quarterly filings to identify recent changes. Keep GAAP figures separate from management’s adjusted presentation until you have read the reconciliation.

Metric What it measures How to use it
Operating revenue Revenue generated by the airline’s operating activities Establishes the scale of the business and the base for RASM.
Operating income Profit after operating expenses but before interest and taxes Best starting point for judging the airline operation itself.
Operating margin Operating income divided by operating revenue Shows how much revenue remains after operating costs.
Net income Profit after interest, taxes and non-operating items Shows what remains for shareholders, but can be heavily affected by financing and special items.
Diluted EPS Net income allocated over diluted shares Useful for shareholder impact; check share-count changes and one-time items.

Operating margin should be your first profitability checkpoint. Net income can fall even when the airline operation improves if interest expense rises, taxes change or fleet financing becomes more expensive. Conversely, net income can look strong after a nonrecurring gain while the underlying operation weakens. Read the income statement, footnotes and cash-flow statement together.

Separate recurring results from special items

Airlines frequently present adjusted operating income or adjusted EPS alongside GAAP results. Adjustments can include restructuring, fleet-transition costs, impairment charges, unusual labor settlements or other items that management considers exceptional. The correct procedure is to start with GAAP, identify every adjustment, and decide whether it is genuinely nonrecurring. A cost that appears every year because the carrier is continually changing fleets or integrating operations should not automatically be treated as irrelevant.

Normalize different-size airlines with available seat miles

Total dollars favor the largest carrier. Available seat miles solve that problem by measuring the seats offered multiplied by the miles flown. ASM is a capacity denominator, so it allows a large network and a smaller network to be compared on a common production base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The core formulas are:

  • RASM: operating revenue ÷ available seat miles.
  • CASM: operating expenses ÷ available seat miles.
  • Operating spread: RASM − CASM.
  • Operating margin: operating income ÷ operating revenue.

Use matching definitions and periods. A carrier’s RASM should be compared with its own operating CASM calculated over the same ASMs, and peer figures should use the same unit convention, usually cents per ASM. Check whether a company includes regional operations, cargo-related activity or other items in the numerator and denominator before drawing a conclusion.

Measure Why it matters Question to ask
RASM Revenue generated for each unit of capacity Is revenue per seat mile rising because of pricing, fuller aircraft, premium demand, ancillary sales or a favorable network mix?
CASM Total operating cost for each unit of capacity Are costs falling through productivity, or merely benefiting from temporary fuel or capacity effects?
CASM excluding fuel Non-fuel operating cost per ASM Does the carrier control labor, maintenance, airport and overhead costs better than peers?
RASM minus CASM Unit operating spread before non-operating items Is the spread widening for durable reasons, and does it reconcile with reported operating margin?

Reconcile the unit spread to the income statement

RASM minus CASM is a unit measure, not a substitute for GAAP earnings. A widening spread should normally support a higher operating margin, but the relationship can be affected by the exact revenue and expense definitions, regional accounting, capacity changes and rounding. After calculating the spread, compare it with operating income and margin. If the two stories diverge, inspect the filing for items excluded from a company’s non-GAAP metric or for differences in how capacity and expenses are presented.

Use RASM to examine revenue quality

RASM tells you how much operating revenue the airline produces from each ASM, but it does not explain why. Break the result into its commercial drivers rather than treating a higher number as proof of superior execution.

Load factor and yield

Load factor measures the share of available seats that are filled. Yield measures passenger revenue for the traffic carried, commonly on a passenger-mile basis. A high load factor with weak yield can produce disappointing RASM if the carrier filled seats through discounting. A lower load factor can still be economically attractive when pricing and premium mix are strong. Compare both measures and examine how they changed with capacity.

Premium and ancillary revenue

Premium-cabin demand, seat fees, baggage charges, loyalty activity and other ancillary revenue can lift RASM without a proportional increase in ASMs. Look for the share and growth of these streams, but check their costs and durability. A revenue gain dependent on temporary promotions or a narrow premium market may not persist when demand normalizes.

Cargo and network mix

Cargo contribution can matter greatly for an airline with a large wide-body or international operation, while a primarily domestic carrier may have a different revenue profile. Hub geography, stage length and route mix also affect RASM. Compare carriers with similar networks first, then explain why a structurally different network earns a different unit revenue rather than labeling the difference good or bad.

Capacity growth

Capacity growth can dilute RASM if new seats enter markets faster than demand, even when total revenue rises. Conversely, adding capacity to constrained, high-demand routes can support both revenue and margin. Read RASM alongside ASM growth, load factor and management’s explanation of schedule changes.

Understand CASM and CASM excluding fuel

CASM is the traditional measure of airline unit operating cost. It captures the total cost of producing available seat miles, including labor, fuel, maintenance, airport and handling charges, aircraft ownership and other operating expenses. Airlines for America’s Passenger Airline Cost Index tracks labor, fuel, food, aircraft ownership, airport landing fees, insurance, utilities and interest as production-input categories, illustrating why fuel alone cannot explain the entire cost structure.

CASM-ex isolates non-fuel execution, but it is not standardized

CASM excluding fuel is often called CASM-ex or CASM-X. It can make labor, maintenance, airport and overhead performance easier to see when fuel prices move sharply. However, it is non-GAAP and issuer-defined. One carrier may exclude a different set of items or classify regional expenses differently from another. Always read the reconciliation and list of exclusions before comparing CASM-ex across companies.

Delta’s 2025 filing reported total CASM of 19.31 cents and CASM-Ex of 13.86 cents. The filing said total CASM was comparable with 2024 because lower fuel expense and a 3% increase in capacity offset higher employee costs. The statement is useful as a bridge between the headline unit-cost number and the underlying drivers, but the figures should not be treated as a universal industry definition of CASM-ex.

Read the cost categories behind CASM

  • Labor: salaries, wages, benefits, staffing levels, overtime, productivity and recently ratified contracts.
  • Fuel: price per gallon, consumption, hedging policy where disclosed, fleet type and fuel efficiency.
  • Maintenance: engine and airframe work, spare-parts costs, shop capacity and the age or complexity of the fleet.
  • Airport and handling: landing fees, terminal charges, ground handling and congestion-related expenses.
  • Aircraft ownership: depreciation, leases, financing and the timing of deliveries or retirements.
  • Other operating expenses: technology, distribution, customer service, insurance and irregular-operations costs.

American’s annual-report disclosure defines total operating CASM as total operating expenses divided by ASMs and identifies salaries, wages and benefits, regional expenses and other operating costs as important drivers. Use that definition as a reminder to trace the denominator and the expense categories rather than relying on a single headline percentage.

Stress fuel exposure instead of assuming fuel explains everything

Fuel is a large and volatile expense, but its effect depends on consumption, aircraft type, route length and the ability to pass costs through to fares. Delta stated that a one-cent increase in jet-fuel cost per gallon would produce approximately $40 million of additional annual fuel expense, based on about four billion gallons of annual consumption. That sensitivity was disclosed by Delta Air Lines in 2024 and applies to the stated consumption base; it is not a universal estimate for every airline.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  • Would the airline’s RASM likely move with fuel through fare changes or surcharges?
  • Is the fleet becoming more or less fuel efficient?
  • Does capacity growth increase total fuel consumption even when fuel cost per ASM falls?
  • Are fuel savings offset by higher labor or maintenance costs?

A period of falling fuel prices can make total CASM look better while CASM-ex worsens. That is why comparing both measures and reconciling them to operating margin is more informative than ranking airlines by total CASM alone.

Make labor a central part of the comparison

Labor is generally a recurring cost, not a one-quarter anomaly. Wage rates, contract settlements, staffing ratios and productivity can change the cost base for years. Compare labor expense per ASM where disclosed, the timing of ratified agreements, headcount growth relative to capacity and management’s productivity targets.

Southwest’s 2025 filing said labor costs from ratified contracts and rate inflation had negatively affected its cost structure. It also described continuing fuel-consumption and fuel-efficiency initiatives. The lesson for peer analysis is to examine wage agreements and staffing productivity alongside fuel programs. A carrier with lower fuel expense but rapidly rising labor CASM may not have a durable cost advantage.

Judge margin durability across changing conditions

A single annual margin is a snapshot. A stronger test is how operating margin behaves when fuel, demand and capacity conditions change. Build a history covering multiple periods and mark events that can distort comparisons, such as pandemic-related disruptions, major fleet transitions, labor settlements or unusual gains.

Separate operating performance from financing

Operating income and operating margin show the core airline operation before interest and taxes. Net income adds interest expense, taxes and non-operating items. Two carriers with similar operating margins can produce very different EPS if one carries more debt, leases more aircraft or pays materially higher interest. Review interest expense and cash interest alongside the operating trend.

Check whether growth creates or destroys value

Capacity growth can raise total operating income while lowering unit revenue, or improve unit economics when added seats are deployed into strong markets. Compare the change in ASMs with RASM, CASM, load factor and operating margin. A margin gain that disappears when capacity returns to normal is less durable than one achieved while the network expands.

Inspect adjusted results carefully

When management highlights adjusted margins, reconcile every adjustment to GAAP. Treat recurring restructuring, fleet-transition and integration spending with skepticism if the company has a history of reporting them as exceptional. The purpose is not to reject adjusted metrics, but to understand which cash costs shareholders should expect to bear.

Put the balance sheet beside the income statement

Airlines are capital-intensive and sensitive to downturns. A ranking based only on RASM, CASM and operating margin can miss financial risk that overwhelms an operating advantage. Review:

  • Net debt and liquidity: debt maturities, unrestricted cash and available credit relative to expected obligations.
  • Interest burden: interest expense as a share of operating income or cash generation, especially when rates reset.
  • Aircraft purchase commitments: future deliveries require deposits and capital even if demand softens.
  • Lease obligations: operating and finance leases can create fixed payments that do not appear in a simple debt comparison.
  • Pension and labor obligations: funding requirements and contractual wage increases can constrain cash flow.
  • Fleet-transition spending: new aircraft may lower fuel burn but require upfront capital, training and maintenance changes.

Liquidity is particularly important when margins are cyclical. A carrier with a slightly weaker current operating margin may be more resilient if it has manageable maturities and commitments, while a high-margin carrier with aggressive fixed obligations can be more exposed in a downturn.

Assess network, fleet and execution risk

Unit metrics reflect the network being operated, so compare the operating context before declaring one carrier more efficient.

Fleet age and utilization

Newer aircraft can reduce fuel burn and maintenance needs, but a large delivery program raises ownership and financing costs. Older fleets may have lower near-term capital requirements while carrying higher maintenance or fuel costs. Examine aircraft utilization, spare capacity and the timing of retirements and deliveries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hub concentration and route mix

A concentrated hub system can create strong connecting traffic and scale benefits, but it can also increase exposure to local weather, congestion or a single regional economy. International, domestic, short-haul and long-haul routes have different stage lengths and cost structures. Compare like with like or explain the structural difference.

Reliability and disruption costs

Irregular operations can create compensation, rebooking, hotel, crew and maintenance costs that are not visible in a simple fuel comparison. Review reliability disclosures, cancellation trends where provided and management commentary on operational-control investments. A low CASM achieved with strained staffing or fragile schedules may not be durable.

How to compare airlines of different sizes

Use total dollars to understand scale and cash commitments, but use per-ASM metrics to compare production efficiency. A practical sequence is:

  1. Compare operating revenue, operating income and operating margin for the same period.
  2. Check ASMs and calculate or verify RASM and CASM using matching definitions.
  3. Compare the RASM-minus-CASM spread, then reconcile it with GAAP operating margin.
  4. Review CASM-ex and its reconciliation to identify non-fuel cost execution.
  5. Adjust your interpretation for network mix, stage length, premium exposure, cargo and capacity growth.
  6. Compare labor, fuel, maintenance, airport and ownership costs as separate drivers.
  7. Stress the result against fuel sensitivity, wage settlements, demand changes and interest expense.
  8. Finish with liquidity, debt, leases, aircraft commitments and fleet-transition requirements.

This sequence prevents the largest carrier from winning simply because it reports the most dollars and prevents the lowest-CASM carrier from winning simply because it operates a different network.

A practical filing-based workflow

Step 1: Build a consistent data sheet

For each airline, record the reporting period, operating revenue, operating expenses, operating income, operating margin, net income, diluted EPS, ASMs, RASM, CASM and CASM-ex. Note whether each number is GAAP, adjusted or company-defined, and retain the footnote explaining the calculation.

Step 2: Verify denominators and scope

Confirm that ASMs cover the same operations as the expense numerator. Check treatment of regional carriers, cargo, loyalty activities and other revenue. A small definitional difference can make a peer comparison appear more precise than it is.

Step 3: Explain the year-over-year movement

For every major change, assign a driver: price, load factor, premium mix, ancillary revenue, capacity, fuel, labor, maintenance, airport costs or ownership. Use management’s filing explanation, but test it against the numbers. For example, a stable total CASM with lower fuel and higher employee costs implies that non-fuel pressure absorbed the fuel benefit.

Step 4: Test durability

Ask what happens when fuel returns to a normal range, a labor agreement resets, capacity grows faster than demand or interest rates remain high. The more of the margin that depends on one favorable input, the less confidence you should place in the headline result.

Step 5: Rank the quality of earnings, not just the level

Prefer an operating spread supported by repeatable revenue, controlled non-fuel costs, realistic capacity growth and a balance sheet that can fund the fleet. Treat a one-period margin record, an unexplained adjusted figure or a low CASM with weak reliability as incomplete evidence.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing total revenue without capacity: larger airlines naturally report more dollars.
  • Using CASM-ex as if it were GAAP: exclusions differ by issuer and can change the apparent ranking.
  • Ignoring load factor and yield: a fuller aircraft is not automatically more profitable if fares are heavily discounted.
  • Attributing every cost change to fuel: labor, maintenance, airport and ownership costs can offset fuel savings.
  • Using one quarter as a cycle: seasonality, disruptions and temporary pricing can distort results.
  • Ranking on operating margin while ignoring interest: financing can determine whether operating gains reach shareholders.
  • Accepting every “one-time” adjustment: recurring fleet or restructuring costs still consume cash.
  • Overlooking capacity growth: adding seats can increase revenue while weakening RASM and margin.
  • Comparing unlike networks: stage length, hub structure, premium exposure and cargo mix affect both revenue and cost.

A decision framework for airline-stock research

After collecting the metrics, classify each carrier in four dimensions:

  • Revenue power: RASM trend, yield, load factor, premium and ancillary contribution, and the quality of capacity growth.
  • Cost control: total CASM, CASM-ex, labor productivity, fuel efficiency and the trajectory of maintenance and airport costs.
  • Durability: operating-margin performance across different fuel, demand and capacity conditions, with special items removed only when justified.
  • Resilience: liquidity, net debt, interest burden, aircraft commitments, labor obligations and execution reliability.

The strongest candidate is not necessarily the airline with the highest current margin or lowest CASM. It is the one whose RASM supports a durable spread, whose non-fuel costs are controlled, whose earnings reconcile to GAAP, and whose balance sheet can withstand the next adverse cycle.

Bottom line

Compare airline stocks from the income statement outward: operating margin establishes the core result, ASM-based RASM and CASM make carriers comparable, and CASM-ex helps isolate non-fuel execution when its issuer-specific exclusions are understood. Then test the spread against fuel and labor sensitivity, capacity changes, network and fleet realities, special items, interest expense and fixed commitments. That process produces a more reliable ranking than any single margin, earnings-per-share figure or cost-per-seat-mile statistic.
