The cheapest AI model is not the one with the lowest advertised input-token rate. A defensible comparison uses the same workload, counts input and output separately, models cache and service-tier charges, includes tools and platform fees, and records region and price date. Then it checks effective monthly cost against quality, latency, context limits and reliability.
This guide gives you a repeatable way to compare API pricing from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, whether you call a first-party endpoint or deploy through a cloud platform.

What a useful AI pricing comparison measures
Provider rate cards describe different products and billing dimensions. One may publish separate cache-write and cache-read prices; another may bundle a mode into a broader service tier. Some services add charges for grounding, storage, images, audio or video. A single “price per million tokens” list therefore cannot answer what your application will cost.

Use one representative workload
Define the workload before opening a rate card. Record:
- Requests per day and per month, including expected retries.
- Average and high-percentile input and output tokens per request.
- Whether requests contain text, images, audio or video.
- Maximum context required, not just the average prompt size.
- Latency target, concurrency and uptime or reliability requirement.
- Required geography, data-residency boundary and currency.
- Tools, retrieval, web search, code execution or other metered features.
- Expected cache-hit rate and the amount of data written to a cache.
- The fraction of traffic eligible for batch, flex, priority or fast processing.
Use production telemetry when available. For a new product, create a conservative estimate with low, typical and high cases rather than pretending one average request represents every user.
Separate traffic classes
Do not force interactive chat, offline summarization and long-context document processing into one average. Give each class its own row in your model. A low-latency support request may need a priority tier, while a nightly import can use batch pricing. Combining them can hide a meaningful premium or discount.
Capture the exact rate-card context
Before copying a number, save the details that make it reproducible. Prices change, and the same model family can have different rates by endpoint, region or platform.
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Provider and model ID | Exact published model identifier, including version or dated alias | Aliases can move to a newer model while a dated ID remains stable. |
| Endpoint and service tier | API or cloud service, plus Standard, Batch, Flex, Priority, Fast or equivalent mode | The mode can change both price and scheduling behavior. |
| Geography | Region, processing location and currency | Regional or partner-operated prices may differ from first-party rates. |
| Price effective date | Date the rate card says the price applies | It distinguishes a current rate from an old screenshot or cached page. |
| Retrieval timestamp | Date and time you captured the page | It lets finance or engineering reproduce the decision later. |
| Billing dimensions | Input, cached input, cache write, output, tool, grounding, storage and platform charges | Omitted dimensions are a common source of underestimation. |
| Context band | Short- and long-context column, if the provider publishes both | A long prompt can move into a different price band. |
Keep first-party API and cloud-platform entries in separate rows even when their model names look identical. AWS documentation, for example, explains that models offered through Amazon Bedrock are billed through AWS and that regional-processing services use regional rates. Anthropic also notes that partner-operated platforms can have independent regional pricing.
Normalize prices without losing important distinctions
For token-billed products, normalize the base rates to dollars per 1 million tokens. Keep separate columns for input, cached input or cache read, cache write, and output. Do not collapse them into one blended rate until after you have applied your workload’s proportions.
The per-request formula
For a request with token counts and published rates, calculate:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
(input_tokens / 1,000,000 × input_rate) + (output_tokens / 1,000,000 × output_rate)
Add cache, tool, grounding, storage and platform charges that apply to that request. Multiply the resulting request cost by expected monthly request volume. If a provider bills a component per call rather than per token, calculate that component separately and add it to the same request total.

Illustrative arithmetic
The following numbers are deliberately hypothetical; they show the method, not a provider quotation. Suppose one workload uses 2,000,000 input tokens and 500,000 output tokens each month. At an illustrative input rate of $2 per million and output rate of $8 per million:
- Input: 2 × $2 = $4.
- Output: 0.5 × $8 = $4.
- Token subtotal: $8 per month.
If 70% of the input is a cache hit and the illustrative cache-read rate is $0.50 per million, the uncached 0.6 million tokens cost 0.6 × $2 = $1.20, while the cached 1.4 million cost 1.4 × $0.50 = $0.70. The revised input total is $1.90, reducing the token subtotal to $5.90 before any cache-write, tool or platform charges. Your sheet should calculate this from cells, not from a rounded headline percentage.
Token counts are provider-specific
Tokens are the small units models process and generate. The same text can tokenize differently across model families, and reasoning effort can create additional output consumption. Measure actual usage from each provider’s response metadata where possible. For planning, use the provider’s tokenizer or a conservative range and label the estimate as such.
Google’s billing documentation describes Gemini API pricing as based on input-token count and output-token count. OpenAI’s documentation likewise distinguishes input, cached input and output usage and notes that higher reasoning effort can change token consumption and total cost.
Model caching explicitly
Caching is not a universal discount. A rate card may distinguish cache writes from cache reads, and some systems impose minimum cache duration, size or eligibility rules. Record all of these conditions in your calculator.
Cache-write cost
Count tokens written to the cache when a long system prompt, document prefix or repeated context is first stored. Apply the cache-write rate, which can differ from both ordinary input and cache-read rates. If the provider charges storage time, include the duration and stored-token quantity as another line item.

Cache-hit cost
Estimate a hit rate by traffic class. A 90% hit rate on a small repeated prefix is not equivalent to a 90% hit rate on the whole request. Calculate cached and uncached tokens separately, and run a zero-hit case so your application still has a valid cost estimate after cache eviction or a keying mistake.
Cache-key design affects the bill
Put stable instructions and repeated reference material in the cacheable portion of a request. Keep user-specific text outside it when the provider’s rules require an exact prefix match. Monitor cache-hit ratios and cache-write volume; a low hit rate with frequent writes can cost more than ordinary input processing.
Account for service modes and latency trade-offs
Providers commonly offer Standard and one or more alternatives such as Batch, Flex, Priority or Fast. Treat each as a separate price-and-performance option.

| Mode | Typical use | What to model |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Interactive or mixed traffic | Published input, output and cache rates; quotas and concurrency. |
| Batch | Offline jobs where delayed completion is acceptable | Batch-specific token rates, eligibility, maximum job duration and the share of work that can wait. |
| Flex | Lower-cost work that can tolerate variable capacity | Flex rate, scheduling uncertainty, retry policy and deadline risk. |
| Priority or Fast | Requests with tighter latency or capacity requirements | Premium rate, reserved or accelerated capacity terms and the percentage of traffic that truly needs it. |
Do not apply a batch discount to traffic that must answer immediately. Conversely, do not price a nightly report at an interactive premium merely because your prototype used the standard endpoint. Include expected retries when a flexible or capacity-constrained mode can defer or fail work.
Include non-token charges
Token arithmetic is only the base. Make a separate column for every metered feature your workload invokes.
- Tools and function calls: A model tokenizes the tool description and result, while the tool itself may have a per-call or infrastructure charge.
- Grounding and web search: Requests can be billed independently of model tokens.
- Images, audio and video: Providers may meter input and output in modality-specific units or convert them to tokens. Use the rate card’s stated unit rather than assuming text pricing.
- Storage: Cached prompts, files, vector indexes or retained conversation state can incur time-based or capacity-based charges.
- Platform fees: A cloud marketplace, managed endpoint or observability layer can add a markup or infrastructure charge.
- Quotas and overages: A plan limit can stop requests or move them to a different billing rule. Model the operational response, not just the nominal overage.
Grounding example
Google states that Google Search grounding includes 5,000 free requests per month for applicable models, then costs $14 per 1,000 requests. Apply the allowance to the eligible grounding requests, not to all Gemini calls. If a workload makes 6,200 grounded searches, the billable portion is 1,200 requests; at the stated rate that component is 1.2 × $14 = $16.80, before model-token charges. Confirm that your chosen model and region qualify, because the allowance is not a universal credit for every request.
Keep first-party and cloud-platform prices distinct
The same underlying model can appear in a provider’s own API and on a partner cloud. Create separate rows for each route and capture region, currency, network path, quota and support terms. A cloud route may satisfy a data-residency requirement while adding a regional-processing rate or platform fee. A first-party route may have a different quota or feature set.
Anthropic’s pricing information separates standard and batch token prices, cache-write and cache-hit categories, and regional or partner-platform pricing. OpenAI separates input, cached input, cache writes and output and publishes distinct Standard, Batch, Flex and Fast-mode tables, including short- and long-context columns. OpenAI also states that the Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch and Assistants APIs are not priced as separate products; usage is billed at the selected model’s rates. That statement does not remove other charges such as tools or platform fees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild a comparison worksheet
A spreadsheet or small script should calculate every candidate from the same workload inputs. Use one row per provider, model, endpoint, region and service tier.
| Column group | Recommended fields |
|---|---|
| Workload | Requests/month, input tokens/request, output tokens/request, retries, modality and context band |
| Base rates | Input, output, cache read, cache write, batch, flex, priority or fast rates |
| Usage mix | Standard share, batch share, priority share, cache-hit percentage and grounded-request count |
| Add-ons | Tool calls, grounding, image/audio/video units, storage and platform fees |
| Commercial metadata | Model ID, endpoint, region, currency, effective date and retrieval timestamp |
| Outcome measures | Effective cost/request, monthly cost, latency target, context limit, quality score and reliability result |
Use formulas rather than typed totals. Add validation rules that flag a missing rate, an impossible percentage above 100%, or a context length outside the model’s limit. Preserve the original rate-card snapshot or a dated internal record so a later price change can be diffed.
Run sensitivity cases before choosing a model
Your conclusion should survive plausible changes in traffic. At minimum, recalculate these cases:
- Input-heavy: Long documents with short answers.
- Output-heavy: Coding, extraction or agent tasks that generate long responses.
- Cache-off: Zero cache hits and full ordinary-input billing.
- Cache-optimistic: The measured or planned hit rate.
- Batch-shift: The largest share that can legally or operationally move to batch.
- Retry surge: Increased calls during transient failures or tool errors.
- Context expansion: A prompt that crosses a provider’s short-to-long-context threshold.
- Regional move: The required processing region or a failover region.
Plot monthly cost against input/output mix and cache-hit rate. A model that wins at 90% cache hits may lose at 20%; a low-output-rate model may be expensive for a generation-heavy task. Report the break-even point instead of declaring one universal winner.

Compare cost with quality, latency and reliability
Price is an input to the decision, not the decision itself. Evaluate representative tasks using the same prompts, context and acceptance criteria. Record factual accuracy, instruction following, structured-output validity, safety behavior and human correction time. Keep these results separate from published prices because they are workload-specific.
Measure latency at the percentile your users experience, not only an average. Include time to first token and total completion time where streaming matters. Check rate limits, concurrency, timeout behavior, retry guidance and documented model retirement risk. The editorial evidence available for this comparison does not establish an independent benchmark or hands-on latency result, so those claims must come from your own test or provider-specific evidence.

A practical selection sequence
- Write the workload specification and divide it into traffic classes.
- Collect current rate-card fields for each exact model, endpoint, region and tier.
- Normalize token rates to dollars per million while retaining cache and mode columns.
- Enter observed or estimated token counts, cache behavior, retries and add-on usage.
- Calculate per-request and monthly totals with the formula shown above.
- Run input/output, cache, batch, context, retry and region sensitivity cases.
- Test quality and latency on representative tasks and record reliability constraints.
- Choose the lowest-cost option that meets the acceptance criteria, not the lowest headline rate.
- Save a dated snapshot and schedule a rate-card review before launch and whenever usage or provider terms change.
What to retain for an auditable decision
Store the workload assumptions, raw usage samples, tokenizer or measurement method, rate-card fields, formulas, sensitivity outputs and quality-test results. Note which values are estimates and which came from billing records. Recheck the official rate card before publication or purchase; model catalogs, prices and service modes can change without preserving the assumptions behind an old spreadsheet.
The Bottom Line
Compare complete, dated workloads—not isolated token prices. Keep cache, mode, tool, grounding, storage, geography and platform charges visible, then select the model that meets your quality and latency requirements at a sustainable effective monthly cost.
