Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The fairest way to compare AI chip stocks is to put every company on the same fiscal period, currency, accounting basis and valuation date, then score four things separately: comparable growth, durable margins and cash conversion, the price paid for those results, and the risks that could interrupt them. Do not treat all reported revenue as AI revenue. NVIDIA reports a very large Data Center business; AMD reports Data Center alongside Client, Gaming and Embedded; Broadcom combines semiconductors with infrastructure software; and TSMC manufactures chips for other companies. A useful comparison therefore combines reported company growth with the most clearly disclosed AI or Data Center measure, rather than forcing unlike businesses into one ranking.
What an apples-to-apples AI-chip comparison looks like
Start with a data sheet for NVIDIA, AMD, Broadcom and TSMC covering the same reporting window. Record the fiscal quarter or year, currency, diluted share count, GAAP or adjusted accounting, and whether a figure is company-wide or segment-only. Then move through growth, profitability, cash flow, valuation and risk in that order.

The purpose is not to name a permanent winner. AI infrastructure demand, product cycles, customer purchasing and share prices change quickly. The purpose is to identify which earnings are growing, how much of each dollar becomes profit and cash, what expectations the stock price already discounts, and which operational or geopolitical event could break the thesis.
Separate business models before comparing numbers
- NVIDIA: designs accelerated-computing platforms, including GPUs, networking and software. Data Center is its principal AI exposure, but company-wide results also include other platforms.
- AMD: reports Data Center, Client and Gaming, and Embedded segments. EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators drive the Data Center comparison; the other segments can raise or reduce total-company growth.
- Broadcom: combines semiconductor products with infrastructure software. AI-related semiconductor growth should not be confused with the growth rate of the consolidated company.
- TSMC: is a contract foundry. It earns manufacturing revenue from customers’ designs, so its AI exposure appears through wafer demand, process-node mix and advanced packaging rather than a merchant-accelerator segment.
Build the scorecard in a consistent order
- Lock the period: use the latest full fiscal year or the latest quarter available for all four companies, and label fiscal-year differences explicitly.
- Normalize currency: keep reported U.S.-dollar figures in dollars or convert every company with one documented exchange-rate method. Do not mix a reported dollar number with a translated local-currency number.
- Record reported growth: calculate year-over-year revenue growth from the same type of period. Add sequential growth only as a separate measure.
- Isolate AI exposure: use Data Center, accelerator, networking, advanced-node or packaging disclosure where available. Mark the scope instead of estimating an undisclosed AI share.
- Measure profitability: capture GAAP gross margin, GAAP operating margin and free-cash-flow margin. Put adjusted measures in separate columns.
- Calculate valuation: use the same-day share price, latest diluted share count, net cash or debt and a clearly identified forward or trailing earnings period.
- Stress-test risks: examine customer concentration, China and other export exposure, manufacturing capacity, custom silicon, inventory, product transitions and execution.
- Score durability: give more weight to recurring software or networking revenue, design wins, switching costs, process leadership and cash generation than to a single launch or quarter.
Current growth evidence for the major companies
NVIDIA: company-wide growth is already heavily AI-linked
NVIDIA reported fiscal-2026 revenue of $215.938 billion, up 65% for the year. Full-year Data Center revenue was $193.7 billion, up 68%. Its fourth-quarter release reported record revenue of $62.3 billion, up 22% from the previous quarter and 75% from a year earlier, driven by accelerated computing and AI platform shifts.

For a scorecard, use the 68% Data Center growth rate as the cleaner AI indicator and retain 65% as the consolidated company rate. The small difference matters: it shows that the AI-heavy segment is growing at least as fast as the whole business in the cited fiscal year. Check whether subsequent quarters show the same mix, because a change in networking, gaming or other businesses can alter company-wide margins and valuation.
AMD: Data Center growth must be separated from the rest of the portfolio
AMD’s quarter ended June 27, 2026 produced $11.5 billion of revenue, up 50% year over year, with demand from EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 GPUs contributing to Data Center performance. AMD reported a 54% gross margin and $2.0 billion of operating income for that quarter.
For 2025, AMD reported $34.6 billion of revenue, up 34%, while Data Center revenue reached $16.6 billion, up 32%. Put the 32% segment rate beside the 34% company rate instead of claiming that all AMD revenue is AI revenue. A buyer comparing AMD with NVIDIA should also check accelerator availability, software adoption and the proportion of Data Center growth coming from CPUs versus GPUs.
Broadcom: do not let semiconductor growth hide the software mix
Broadcom’s fiscal-2026 second-quarter release described record revenue and accelerating AI-semiconductor growth. Its fiscal-2026 third-quarter revenue guide was $29.4 billion. The disclosed figures establish direction and a forward guide, but they do not provide a directly comparable consolidated growth percentage, gross margin or operating margin in the supplied evidence.
Use Broadcom’s semiconductor AI growth as a segment indicator and keep infrastructure software in a separate line. A scorecard that treats the combined company as a pure AI-chip supplier will misstate both growth and margins. Look for custom-accelerator design wins, networking demand, software renewal rates and the effect of acquisitions on reported comparisons.
TSMC: process-node and packaging demand are the AI indicators
TSMC’s revenue increased 35.9% in 2025 in U.S.-dollar terms. Its 3-nanometer process represented 24% of 2025 wafer revenue, and 2-nanometer entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025. The company said advanced technologies and advanced packaging are addressing demand, with the 2-nanometer ramp continuing in 2026.

TSMC does not report an AI-revenue segment comparable to NVIDIA’s Data Center line. Use overall revenue growth, advanced-node share, packaging capacity and customer demand as proxies, and state clearly that they are proxies. Process leadership can benefit many AI customers, but a foundry’s earnings also depend on non-AI devices, utilization, pricing and capital intensity.

Data date and accounting basis: the figures above come from fiscal-2025 and fiscal-2026 disclosures identified in the company materials, including AMD’s quarter ended June 27, 2026, NVIDIA fiscal 2026, Broadcom’s fiscal-2026 Q2 release and TSMC’s 2025 results. NVIDIA’s margin and operating-income figures are non-GAAP; AMD’s cited quarter figures are reported without an adjusted label in the supplied material. Do not rank the margins until you have put all companies on one accounting basis.
How to compare margins and cash generation
Gross margin shows pricing power and mix
Gross margin is revenue minus the cost of products and services, divided by revenue. It captures selling prices, component costs, manufacturing arrangements, inventory charges and product mix. NVIDIA’s fiscal-2026 non-GAAP gross margin was 71.3%, while AMD reported 54% for the June 27, 2026 quarter. Those figures are not directly interchangeable: they cover different periods and accounting bases, and NVIDIA’s figure is non-GAAP.
Normalize by using GAAP for every company, or show GAAP and adjusted columns side by side. Explain large differences caused by stock compensation, amortization, acquisition accounting, warranty charges or inventory provisions rather than treating an adjusted margin as a superior economic truth.
Operating margin tests the cost of staying ahead
Operating margin subtracts research and development, sales and administration from gross profit. A company can have excellent product pricing but a lower operating margin if it is investing heavily in software, new architectures, customer support or manufacturing qualification. Record both operating dollars and the percentage of revenue; the dollar amount shows scale, while the percentage shows efficiency.

AMD’s June 27, 2026 quarter included $2.0 billion of operating income. NVIDIA reported $137.3 billion of non-GAAP operating income for fiscal 2026. Convert each to an operating margin using the revenue from the same period before making a comparison.
Free-cash-flow margin reveals cash conversion
Calculate free-cash-flow margin as operating cash flow minus capital expenditure, divided by revenue. Use the same definition for all four companies and disclose whether capitalized software, finance leases or other items are included. High accounting profit with weak free cash flow can indicate inventory buildup, receivables growth, large capacity commitments or acquisition spending.
Compare a multi-year average with the latest period. One quarter can be distorted by customer prepayments, tax timing or a capacity deposit. A durable AI supplier should convert a substantial share of operating profit into cash while still funding necessary research, tooling and capacity.

Valuation: calculate the multiple instead of guessing it
The supplied operating figures do not include live share prices or diluted share counts, so a fair current valuation cannot be stated without creating a false precision. Pull those inputs immediately before publication and time-stamp them.
Use a fixed calculation sheet
- Record the closing share price on one date for all four companies.
- Use the latest diluted weighted-average share count, or a current diluted count if the company provides one, and document the choice.
- Compute market capitalization as price multiplied by diluted shares.
- Add debt and subtract cash and short-term investments to obtain enterprise value; state whether leases or minority interests are included.
- Choose trailing-twelve-month and next-fiscal-year earnings consistently. Label GAAP net income, adjusted net income and analyst-consensus figures separately.
- Calculate P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-sales and free-cash-flow yield. For yield, divide free cash flow by market capitalization, not enterprise value.
Interpret the multiple with growth and durability
A low P/E can signal cyclicality, export exposure, customer concentration, weaker economics or earnings that are temporarily elevated. A high multiple can be justified by faster growth, higher margins, recurring software or networking revenue, and a longer competitive runway, but only if those advantages survive a slowdown.
For NVIDIA, test how much of the price assumes continued Data Center growth near the fiscal-2026 rate. For AMD, test whether accelerator adoption can lift Data Center growth above the 32% 2025 rate without sacrificing margin. For Broadcom, value semiconductor and infrastructure-software cash flows separately before applying a blended multiple. For TSMC, include capital intensity, node-ramp costs, utilization and geopolitical risk in the earnings scenario.

Risk checklist that can overturn an AI-chip thesis
Customer and platform concentration
Identify the largest customers and programs in filings, then quantify their share of revenue where disclosed. A supplier can report rapid growth while depending on a few hyperscalers or one accelerator generation. Check purchase commitments, backlog quality, cancellation terms and whether a customer is dual-sourcing.
Recommended Free Tools
Export and geopolitical exposure
Map products to destination restrictions rather than using a single company-wide label. NVIDIA’s fiscal-2027 first-quarter outlook assumes no Data Center compute revenue from China, an explicit illustration of how controls can affect guidance. Recheck rules, licenses and product thresholds after every regulatory change, and model a downside case in which a restricted market contributes zero revenue.
Supply, yields and advanced packaging
AI accelerators require leading-edge wafers, high-bandwidth memory, substrates and advanced packaging. TSMC’s 2-nanometer ramp and packaging expansion can support demand, but new-node yields, allocation and cycle times determine when booked demand becomes revenue. For every chip designer, ask which manufacturing partner, package and memory supply are required and whether a constraint could delay shipments.
Custom-silicon competition
Hyperscalers may move workloads from merchant GPUs to internally designed accelerators. Test whether a company has durable design wins, a software ecosystem, networking revenue or a platform relationship that remains valuable when the compute engine changes. A one-time accelerator sale is less defensible than a system, software and networking stack embedded in a customer’s operating model.
Cycle, inventory and capex risk
Review inventory days, customer receivables, channel inventory, purchase commitments and capital expenditure. AI infrastructure spending can be front-loaded; a pause can expose excess components and pressure prices. Compare backlog with actual cash collection rather than treating announced orders as guaranteed earnings.
Execution and product transitions
Check roadmap cadence, software releases, qualification milestones, yields and customer production deployment. Launch claims are not evidence of revenue until customers accept the product and shipments appear in reported results. Watch gross-margin guidance during transitions because a new product can carry launch costs or an unfavorable mix before scale improves economics.
Best Value
A practical scoring framework
Use a 100-point worksheet so a spectacular growth number cannot dominate every other consideration.
| Category | Suggested weight | What to score |
|---|---|---|
| Comparable growth | 30 points | Company revenue growth, disclosed AI or Data Center growth, and evidence that growth is broadening beyond one program |
| Margins and cash | 25 points | Normalized gross and operating margins, free-cash-flow margin, and multi-year stability |
| Valuation | 20 points | Trailing and forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-sales and FCF yield relative to growth and balance-sheet strength |
| Competitive durability | 15 points | Software, networking, process technology, switching costs, design wins and recurring revenue |
| Risk control | 10 points | Customer concentration, export exposure, supply resilience, inventory and execution record |
Score each category against your own required return and risk tolerance, not against a fixed “buy” threshold. A mature foundry, a merchant GPU designer and a diversified semiconductor-and-software supplier should not receive identical growth expectations.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling all revenue AI revenue: use segment disclosures and label proxies.
- Mixing GAAP and adjusted margins: show the accounting basis beside every percentage.
- Comparing fiscal quarters as if they were calendar quarters: write the exact period end date.
- Using a stale multiple: update price, diluted shares, net debt and the earnings denominator together.
- Ignoring currency: TSMC’s 35.9% 2025 growth is explicitly in U.S.-dollar terms; do not compare it with an unconverted local-currency rate.
- Ranking a foundry by GPU sales: evaluate process nodes, utilization, packaging, capex and customer concentration instead.
- Treating guidance as achieved revenue: keep Broadcom’s $29.4 billion Q3 guide in a forward column and do not blend it with reported results.
- Hiding uncertainty in a composite score: show the underlying numbers and the assumptions that drive each score.
How to update the comparison each quarter
- Replace each company’s latest quarter and trailing-twelve-month figures while preserving the prior period in a change column.
- Recalculate segment growth, margins, cash flow and valuation on the same date.
- Record guidance changes, major customer announcements, export restrictions, capacity updates and product-qualification events.
- Run a base case, a demand slowdown case and a supply or export shock case.
- Lower a score only when the new evidence changes earnings power or risk; do not react to a share-price move without updating the fundamentals.
Bottom line: what the evidence supports
NVIDIA currently shows the strongest disclosed AI concentration and growth in this set, with $193.7 billion of fiscal-2026 Data Center revenue growing 68%, but its valuation must be tested against the very high expectations embedded in the price and its China exposure. AMD offers a broader product portfolio and reported a 50% year-over-year quarterly increase, while its 2025 Data Center growth was 32%; the key question is whether Instinct and EPYC momentum can compound without eroding margins. Broadcom requires a split analysis of AI semiconductors, networking and infrastructure software because the consolidated business is not a pure chip comparison. TSMC is the manufacturing and process-leadership exposure, with 35.9% 2025 dollar revenue growth, 3-nanometer at 24% of wafer revenue and a 2-nanometer ramp, but it carries foundry, capacity and geopolitical risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no defensible “fairly valued” winner without same-day prices, diluted shares, net debt and a stated earnings forecast. Use the scorecard, normalize the accounting, and choose the company whose growth, cash conversion and competitive durability still justify its multiple after the downside cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare quarterly or annual figures?
Use annual figures for the primary ranking because they reduce seasonality, then add the latest quarter to detect acceleration or slowdown. Keep the fiscal period end date visible because companies use different calendars.
How should I handle TSMC when it does not report AI revenue?
Treat advanced-node share, advanced-packaging demand and total foundry growth as AI-exposure indicators, and label them as proxies rather than direct AI revenue.
What is the quickest way to detect an overstated AI-growth claim?
Reconcile the headline with the segment note: compare company-wide growth with the disclosed Data Center or semiconductor growth, then check whether customer concentration or a one-time program explains the increase.
When should a high P/E be rejected?
Reject it when the required growth cannot be supported by capacity, customers, margins and cash generation in your base case, or when a downside case produces a permanent earnings impairment rather than a temporary slowdown.
