Compare the actual total cost, not just the listing price
Start with the current prices of the two listings you are considering. Add shipping and tax, then include the cost of anything missing that you need, such as a compatible disc drive or stand. Do not treat a used listing’s lower sticker price as savings until you have counted those costs.

Sony recommends authorized retailers for new purchases because they can support authenticity, functionality, return policy, and warranty coverage. A marketplace listing is not automatically an authorized-retailer purchase.
Check that the PS5 Pro suits your games and setup
Sony’s US product listing identifies the PS5 Pro as a 2TB console. Its enhanced ray tracing, image clarity, and high-frame-rate features apply to select PS5 Pro-enhanced games and vary by title; they are not guaranteed upgrades for every game. Sony also notes that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible. Check the games you actually play before paying extra for the Pro model. Sony’s PS5 Pro 2TB listing describes the model’s stated features.
Resolution claims also depend on the content and setup: Sony’s compatibility guide says select games can support up to 8K, while system and media apps support up to 4K. These are capability ceilings, not promises that a particular game will run at a specific resolution or frame rate. Check Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility guidance for game and accessory details.
Confirm the drive and accessories
Do not assume a PS5 Pro listing includes a disc drive. Sony says the compatible disc drive must be paired during setup with internet access. If you use physical games or discs, confirm whether the drive is included and account for its cost if it is not.

Sony lists the disc drive with cover, vertical stand, and horizontal stand feet as compatible with PS5 Pro. Covers and the base from earlier PS5 model groups are not compatible. Compatibility information does not confirm what a particular seller has packed in the box, so request a precise inventory and photos.

Sony’s US buying guide recommends asking for video proof of the console’s ports, buttons, disc drive where applicable, power-on, and internet connection. A fresh video is useful screening, but it is not a substitute for testing the actual unit yourself when possible. Review the seller’s ratings and arrange enough time to check it without pressure.

- Before meeting: Ask for a video showing the console powering on, connecting to the internet, and tests of its ports, buttons, and disc drive if one is included.
- Inspect the hardware: Look for physical damage, broken warranty seals, and a present, legible serial number. Check image quality on a display and watch for signs of overheating during operation.
- Repeat the functional checks: Test the ports and buttons, confirm the image is stable, and test the drive if included. Connect to the internet and verify the console can access and use PlayStation services.
- Resolve account access: Ask the seller to deactivate the console and relinquish access. Do not complete the purchase if the seller cannot demonstrate the basics or pressures you to skip checks.
Walk away or pause the transaction if the serial number is removed, online access cannot be tested, there is a lost-or-stolen concern, or the seller refuses reasonable inspection. A video cannot establish every aspect of a console’s condition; the in-person check is what lets you assess the actual unit.

Sony’s US buying guide states: “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*.” The guide separately notes that certified-refurbished products do include warranty. For Sony’s US PS5 hardware warranty, the current terms describe one year from the original purchase for the original purchaser, apply only in the US and Canada, and require the original bill of sale or retailer receipt showing the purchase date for service. Ask for the original receipt, but do not treat it as proof that manufacturer coverage transfers to a later owner. Confirm any seller-provided warranty and return window in writing. Warranty and consumer protections can differ outside the US and Canada; check the terms that apply where you live.

Distinguish certified refurbished from marketplace used
Sony Direct says its certified-refurbished products have a one-year limited warranty. That policy does not establish that a refurbished PS5 Pro is currently available: the Sony listing reviewed was for a refurbished slim PS5, not a Pro. Sony Direct’s refurbished-program policy explains its warranty, and its refurbished slim PS5 listing is an example of a different model.
Make the decision using your own risk threshold
- Choose new when you want a more straightforward route to retailer support, a return policy, and applicable original-purchaser warranty coverage.
- Consider third-party used only when the unit passes inspection, the seller’s return terms are acceptable, all required accessories are accounted for, and the verified delivered-price advantage is worth the added risk.
- Keep comparing if the seller will not allow testing, the account or service state is unclear, the serial number is missing, or the savings disappear after shipping, tax, and replacements.
There is no reliable universal used-price discount to apply here. Base the decision on the two current listings, your need for discs and accessories, and whether you can tolerate having no Sony warranty on a third-party used unit.
