You do not always need an Xbox console to play Xbox games: Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream supported games to certain phones, tablets, PCs, TVs, Fire TV devices, and other supported hardware. To start, you generally need an eligible Game Pass plan, a supported game and region, a compatible device and controller, and a reliable internet connection. Playing directly on an Xbox console instead requires access to an Xbox console, but the setup and game requirements depend on what you want to play.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming runs a game on Xbox’s servers and streams the result to your device. That means you can play without owning a console, provided your device, region, subscription, and chosen game are supported. Xbox’s live Cloud Gaming page lists current compatibility and requirements.

- An eligible plan or an exception: Most cloud games require an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential subscription. Xbox says select free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in a supported region.
- A supported game and region: Not every Xbox game is available to stream, and availability varies by region, plan, and platform. Check the game and current Xbox availability information before choosing a setup.
- A supported device: Xbox lists categories including Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select LG, Samsung, and VIDAA OS TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and select Meta Quest headsets. Exact models and regional availability can change.
- A controller, in most cases: Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB. Select games offer touch controls, but that is a game-specific alternative, not a general replacement for a controller.
- A supported browser when playing on xbox.com: Browser compatibility is part of the requirements for browser-based play; consult Xbox’s current page for supported options.
Internet speed: minimum versus Xbox’s quality guidance
Xbox lists 10 Mbps download as the minimum for cloud play, says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Its general best-performance guidance is 10 Mbps for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets. These are Xbox recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play: connection quality, location, device, and other factors also affect the stream.

Streaming can also differ from playing locally. Xbox notes that cloud play may have limitations such as lower video resolution, cloud-only saves, limited audio outputs, or limited accessory support. Check whether those restrictions matter for the particular game and setup you have in mind.

What you need to play on a TV
For direct cloud gaming on a television, you need a supported LG or Samsung smart TV or Amazon Fire TV device, a compatible controller, and a Game Pass subscription for most games. Xbox’s TV guidance calls for a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi with 20 Mbps download speed. Select free-to-play games and supported games may be exceptions to the general subscription requirement. Because support depends on TV or Fire TV generation, market, and game, confirm your exact device on Xbox’s Xbox on TVs page.
What you need for console gaming
Playing directly on a console means using an Xbox, such as an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. The main distinction is that a console is required for this route; a supported phone, PC, or TV can be enough for cloud play. A compatible controller is relevant to both approaches, and you may already own one.

Xbox’s cloud and product pages do not provide a complete universal first-time console setup checklist. Requirements beyond having access to a console depend on the game and how you plan to use it, so do not assume every console game requires Game Pass or a constant internet connection. Check the requirements for the specific game and features you want.

| Question | Xbox Cloud Gaming | Playing on an Xbox console | Xbox Remote Play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do you need an Xbox console? | No, if you have another supported device and the game and service are available to you. | Yes: use an Xbox console such as Series X|S or Xbox One. | Yes. Your console is the host that streams the game. |
| Where does the game run? | On Xbox’s cloud service. | On the console you are playing on. | On your own console; the client device receives a stream. |
| Subscription and game access | Most games require an eligible Game Pass plan; select free-to-play games are an exception. | Depends on the game and features; a subscription is not established as universally necessary. | Streams games installed on your console; access depends on the game and your setup. |
| Internet guidance in Xbox’s current pages | 10 Mbps minimum; Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and notes some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. | Xbox’s cited cloud pages do not specify a general internet requirement for all local console play. | Xbox lists 10 Mbps down over 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. |
Remote Play is not Cloud Gaming
Remote Play is often mistaken for playing Xbox without a console. It streams games installed on your own Xbox to a compatible TV, VR headset, PC, phone, or tablet, so the console remains necessary as the host. Xbox lists a Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled, a compatible client device, a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, and 10 Mbps download over 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. See the current Xbox Remote Play requirements for supported devices and setup details.

Which setup should you choose?
- Choose Cloud Gaming if you want to try supported games on a device you already own and do not want a console to be a prerequisite. First verify your region, plan, game, device, controller, and connection.
- Choose a console if you want to play directly on Xbox hardware. Confirm the needs of your chosen games and features rather than assuming a subscription is required for every use.
- Choose Remote Play if you already have an Xbox and want to stream games installed on it to another compatible screen. It does not eliminate the need for a console.
