Apple Music playlists are collections of music; profiles let you share selected playlists and listening activity with other subscribers; recommendations help you find music based on your preferences and listening history. These features connect, but they have separate controls: a playlist can stay in your library without appearing on your profile, and listening-history settings affect recommendations, Replay, and what followers can see.
How the three features differ
| Feature | What it does | Main controls |
|---|---|---|
| Playlists | Collect songs and music videos for a mood, occasion, or personal library. Playlists can be assembled by you, created by Apple Music contributors, shared by people you follow, generated as Replay, or made collaboratively. | Choose what goes in a playlist; whether and how it is shared depends on the playlist and profile settings. |
| Profiles | Provide a social page where you can follow friends and show selected playlists or listening activity. | Choose who can follow you, which playlists appear, and whether listening activity is visible. |
| Recommendations | Surface music and playlists tailored to your listening and expressed preferences. | Choose favorite genres and artists, give like or dislike feedback, and manage Use Listening History. |
Apple describes recommendations as improving over time as subscribers listen, select favorite artists, and tell Apple Music what they like or dislike. Its documentation explains these user-facing inputs, not the technical design or ranking method of the recommendation system. Apple’s iPhone recommendations guide covers the preference controls.

How do I share an Apple Music playlist?
First decide whether you want a playlist in your own library or displayed for profile visitors. Those are different things: a playlist can be in your library without being featured on your profile. To share through your profile, create or open your Music Profile from the account control in Music, then choose which playlists to share. You can also follow friends and see playlists shared by subscribers you follow. Apple’s profile and sharing guide describes the profile controls.

Apple also lists collaborative playlists as a playlist type. The cited guidance does not establish the detailed participant permissions or setup steps, so do not assume that every shared playlist is collaborative or that sharing grants others the same editing access.

Can friends see what I’m listening to?
They may see listening activity if you have a Music Profile and have not hidden that activity. In profile settings, Apple provides controls for choosing an audience for follow requests, selecting which playlists to share, hiding an item from your profile, turning off “Listening To,” or blocking a follower. You can set followers to “People You Approve” rather than allowing anyone to follow. Availability of profile and social features can vary by plan and region; Apple Music is not available in every country or region. Apple’s profile guidance explains these options.
For a broader privacy change, turn off Use Listening History. Apple says this prevents listening habits from being used to adjust new recommendations and Replay contents, and hides music you play from followers. This is useful for listening you do not want to influence those surfaces. To change only what is displayed on your profile, use the profile visibility controls instead. Apple’s listening-history guidance explains the effect of this setting.

How do I improve Apple Music recommendations?
- Set initial preferences. On iPhone, choose favorite genres and artists when prompted in Music, or adjust the preferences available in the app.
- Give direct feedback. Mark music you like or dislike when those controls are available; Apple says this feedback helps tailor recommendations.
- Listen with history enabled when you want it to count. If Use Listening History is off, Apple says your listening habits will not adjust new recommendations or Replay contents.
- Check the right discovery area. Home includes tailored recommendations and recently played music. Made For You contains personalized playlists based on your listening profile and history.
In Apple Music on the web, personalized playlists appear in Made For You when you add them to your library. If a playlist is missing, check whether you added it and whether you are looking in Made For You rather than Home. Apple’s Apple Music on the web guide describes Home, Made For You, and adding personalized playlists.
What do Replay and Sync Library do?
Replay is a yearly view of listening insights and playlists highlighting the music you listened to most. Because Apple says turning off Use Listening History affects Replay contents, history settings matter if you want listening reflected there. Apple’s web guide to Apple Music describes Replay.

Sync Library is separate from profile sharing. With Sync Library on, library changes sync across your devices; profile settings determine which playlists you share with followers. Syncing a library does not by itself publish a playlist on your profile. Apple’s profile guidance covers sharing, and Apple’s iPhone guidance addresses Music settings.

Apple says that if you create your profile again within 90 days, your previous information and followers are restored. Treat this as Apple’s stated restoration window, not a guarantee beyond that period. See Apple’s profile and sharing support page for its profile guidance.
