Compare a new game in this order: confirm the exact platforms and editions, check multiplayer compatibility, measure performance on the specific hardware, verify controls and accessibility, account for content and release timing, then calculate the complete regional cost. If your friends are split across systems, the publisher’s cross-play matrix is the first filter; only compare performance and price among platforms that can actually play together.
Start with the game’s official platform list
Open the developer or publisher’s product page and support documentation before comparing stores. Record the exact edition and generation: PS5 is not PS4, Xbox Series X|S is not Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch is not Switch 2. A listing may cover several generations while offering different graphics modes, features, save rules, or release dates.

- Platforms: write down every officially supported system and whether the listing is a native build, a backward-compatible version, or a cloud-streamed release.
- Edition: note Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate, launch bundles, season passes, and preorder bonuses separately.
- Release status: record the launch date for each platform, early-access period, patch level, and whether physical and digital versions contain the same build.
- Online rules: identify cross-play, cross-progression, account-linking requirements, voice chat, and any console online subscription.
Do not infer support from a store icon or from another game by the same publisher. Cross-play and save transfer are title-specific features that can differ by platform generation and even by game mode.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
| Axis | What to record for each version | Why it can change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Performance and image quality | Resolution mode, frame-rate mode, HDR, VRR, ray tracing, loading behavior, and same-version stability tests | A console’s maximum output is not proof of a game’s rendered resolution or sustained frame rate; PC results vary by configuration |
| Controls and accessibility | Controller layout, mouse and keyboard support, remapping, text size, color options, subtitles, audio controls, and platform features | The most powerful version is a poor choice if its input or accessibility options do not fit the player |
| Multiplayer and saves | Cross-play by platform and generation, cross-progression, account linking, voice chat, and online-subscription requirement | Friends may be unable to party together even when they own the same title |
| Content and timing | Included expansions, patches, mods, exclusives, release timing, and whether the build is complete or cloud-streamed | A later or lower-cost edition may omit downloadable content or arrive after the community has moved on |
| Portability and convenience | Handheld, tabletop, and TV use; suspend/resume; setup; storage; and loading | Convenience can outweigh visual fidelity for travel, shared rooms, or short play sessions |
| Total cost | Regional game price, edition, required subscription, storage expansion, display or controller needs, and accessories | The checkout price is only one part of the cost of owning and playing the version |
Compare PC requirements and real-world performance
Check the game’s published requirements
Copy the official minimum and recommended requirements into your notes. Compare them with the reader’s CPU, graphics card, RAM, available storage, operating-system version, and monitor. Treat minimum requirements as a baseline for launchability, not a promise of a particular resolution or frame rate. A recommended specification also does not guarantee a fixed target unless the developer states the test conditions.
Storage needs deserve special attention. Leave room for patches, shader caches, save files, and temporary installation space. A fast solid-state drive can reduce loading and streaming delays, but it cannot compensate for an underpowered GPU or CPU.
Make performance tests comparable
When performance determines the purchase, use a credible test of the same game version and record its conditions:
- Display resolution and refresh rate.
- Graphics preset and individual settings changed from that preset.
- Upscaling technology and quality mode.
- Ray tracing status.
- Frame-rate cap, average frame rate, and significant dips or stutter.
- Driver version, operating-system version, and patch level when the tester provides them.
Do not promise “144 FPS” or any other number from a different GPU, an older build, or an uncited benchmark. Adjustable settings and upgrade paths are PC advantages, but they also create more opportunities for driver conflicts, shader compilation stutter, incompatible features, and troubleshooting.
Account for PC-specific trade-offs
- Strengths: broad graphics controls, high-refresh and ultrawide display support where the game provides it, mouse and keyboard options, hardware upgrades, and mods where the developer and community support them.
- Costs: the game may require a more expensive upgrade, troubleshooting time, a compatible controller, or extra storage. Modded or unsupported configurations can complicate multiplayer and technical support.
- Best fit: players who already meet the requirements and value control over image quality, frame rate, display format, or community modifications.
Evaluate PlayStation 5 without confusing capability with a game mode
Sony’s PS5 specification manual lists a custom x86-64 AMD Zen 2 CPU and a 10 TFLOPS AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine. The platform supports 4K 120Hz televisions, 8K televisions, and variable refresh rate (VRR) when the game and display support those features. These are platform capabilities, not guarantees that a particular title renders natively at 4K, reaches 120 frames per second, or offers VRR.
Check the title’s PS5 modes
Look for the developer’s descriptions of Quality, Performance, 120Hz, HDR, ray-tracing, and VRR modes. Record whether changing modes alters resolution, lighting, crowd density, or other effects. If a PS4 version is included, verify whether the PS5 entitlement is automatic, paid, or absent and whether saves transfer in both directions.
Consider the PS5 living-room experience
PS5 is usually a strong choice for fixed hardware, couch play, quick setup, and an existing PlayStation friend or subscription ecosystem. Controller features should be counted only when the game supports them; the console’s hardware alone does not establish adaptive-trigger, haptic, motion, or speaker behavior.
Evaluate Xbox Series X and Series S separately
Xbox’s official technology overview gives Series X a performance target of 4K at 60 FPS and up to 120 FPS. The wording describes a hardware target, not a promise that every game renders at native 4K or sustains 120 FPS. Series S has a different performance and memory profile, so never treat “Xbox Series” as one uniform result.
Questions to ask about the Xbox release
- Does the game provide distinct Series X and Series S graphics or performance modes?
- Is the title optimized for current generation, or is it an Xbox One build running through compatibility?
- Does Smart Delivery provide the correct generation automatically, and does ownership include both versions?
- Are saves and achievements shared between Xbox One and Series X|S?
- Is an online subscription required for the game’s multiplayer mode?
Series X can suit players who want console simplicity and a high-refresh television, while Series S may be the lower-entry-cost route if its resolution, memory, and storage compromises are acceptable. The game’s own mode list and same-version tests decide the practical difference.
Understand what Switch and Switch 2 change
Nintendo Switch
For the original Switch, record whether the release is a native build, a reduced-feature port, or a cloud version. Check handheld and docked resolution, frame rate, loading, battery behavior, online features, and whether downloadable content is included. Do not assume parity with PC, PlayStation, or Xbox: lower settings, smaller crowds, delayed patches, or missing modes may be deliberate parts of the port.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo documents TV, tabletop, and handheld modes for Switch 2. Its built-in display is 7.9 inches at 1920×1080 with HDR10 and VRR up to 120Hz; internal storage is 256GB. Nintendo also documents accessibility options including adjustable fonts and color tone, text verbalization, and button customization. Supported games can output up to 4K when docked and reach frame rates up to 120 FPS, but the game must implement those modes and the television must support them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When comparing a Switch 2 version, record docked and handheld behavior separately. A game may use a higher resolution or frame-rate mode on a television while lowering settings in handheld mode to control heat, battery use, or performance. Also verify whether the title is a native Switch 2 release, an enhanced version, or a compatible original-Switch game.
Portability as a performance feature
Switch 2 is the clearest choice when handheld or tabletop play, Nintendo-specific content, or its documented accessibility options matter more than maximum adjustable graphics. Suspend and resume, local storage, battery life, and the ability to play away from a desk can be more valuable than a higher pixel count that is visible only on a large television.
Settle multiplayer, cross-play, and cross-progression first
Build a matrix using the game developer’s support page. List each platform generation as its own row and mark party play, matchmaking, voice chat, and save transfer separately. “Multiplayer” on a store page does not automatically mean cross-play.
| Question | Evidence to verify | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Can players party together? | Supported platform pairs and game modes | Assuming every console and PC version shares one matchmaking pool |
| Does cross-play include generations? | Exact combinations such as PS4–PS5 or Xbox One–Series X|S | Reading “PlayStation” or “Xbox” as one platform |
| Do saves and progression follow the player? | Account-linking rules, inventory and level transfer, and excluded currencies or modes | Confusing cross-save within one manufacturer with transfer between manufacturers |
| Is voice chat available? | In-game voice support, platform party chat, and parental controls | Assuming a platform party can replace in-game voice for cross-platform groups |
| Is an online subscription required? | Regional console policy and the specific game mode | Adding a subscription cost only after buying the game |
Two useful real-world contrasts
EA SPORTS FC currently groups PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for cross-play. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are not in that cross-play group. EA also gives examples of progression moving from PS4 to PS5 and from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, while progression does not transfer from PlayStation to Xbox. These rules show why “current generation” and “cross-progression” must be documented as separate claims.
Apex Legends is a contrasting example: EA says players can party across PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the EA App or Steam, with in-game voice chat. The lesson is not that every EA title works this way; it is that each title needs its own matrix.
Use friends’ systems as the first decision filter
If the people you play with are divided across platforms, eliminate versions that cannot join the same sessions before comparing graphics. Among the eligible versions, check input-based matchmaking, cross-progression limits, and whether a friend must create or link a publisher account. A platform with better visuals is irrelevant if it isolates your group.
Compare controls and accessibility deliberately
Make a feature checklist rather than assuming that a console port or PC build contains the same options. Verify:
- Full button remapping, toggle or hold behavior, stick sensitivity, dead zones, aim assistance, and vibration controls.
- Mouse and keyboard support on consoles, controller support on PC, gyro or motion input, and local multiplayer layouts.
- Subtitle size, speaker labels, background opacity, dialogue and effects sliders, visual indicators for important sounds, and screen-reader or text-to-speech support.
- Color-blind filters, contrast controls, font choices, color-tone adjustments, and options for flashing, camera shake, and motion blur.
- Platform-level features such as system remapping, screen magnification, voice control, and parental restrictions.
Switch 2’s documented adjustable fonts and color tone, text verbalization, and button customization may make it the best fit for a player who needs those features, even if another platform has higher image quality. Conversely, a feature listed by the platform manufacturer may still require developer support inside the game, so confirm it in the title’s settings or support documentation.

Check patch timing and feature parity. A simultaneous launch does not guarantee identical day-one patches, mod support, cross-generation saves, or performance modes. A Switch or Switch 2 version may be complete but technically different; a cloud build may depend on an internet connection and may not provide the same offline access as an installed copy.
For PC, verify launcher requirements, mod policy, anti-cheat compatibility, and whether updates can be rolled back. For consoles, verify whether the disc contains the playable build or requires a large download. These details affect preservation, travel, and what happens if a service is unavailable.

| Likely add-ons | Upgrade, SSD, controller, or monitor | Extra storage, second controller, or display | Extra storage, second controller, or display | microSD or other supported storage, case, controller, or dock accessories |
Include storage expansion when the installed game and update footprint would consume the available space. Include a display or controller only when the reader does not already own one. Do not treat a higher-priced edition as better value unless its included content is content the reader actually wants.
Follow this decision process
- Define the player and region. Record country, currency, existing hardware, display, storage, accessibility needs, and the people with whom the reader will play.
- Confirm supported builds. Use the official platform list and support page. Separate PS4 from PS5, Xbox One from Series X|S, Switch from Switch 2, and native from cloud versions.
- Build the multiplayer matrix. Mark cross-play, cross-generation play, cross-progression, account linking, voice chat, and subscription requirements.
- Remove incompatible choices. Eliminate platforms that cannot join the reader’s friends or cannot provide a required control or accessibility feature.
- Check performance evidence. For PC, compare the reader’s components with official requirements and same-version tests. For consoles, record the game’s actual modes rather than the platform’s maximum output.
- Audit content and timing. Compare edition contents, patches, DLC, mods, exclusives, and release dates. Confirm whether a late port is complete and supported.
- Test convenience. Decide how often the reader will use handheld, tabletop, TV, desk, suspend/resume, local multiplayer, or travel play.
- Add the complete cost. Include the game edition, subscription, storage, display, controller, and any upgrade needed to meet the chosen mode.
- Choose the version with the fewest compromises. Explain the trade-off in one sentence, such as “Choose Series X for the existing Xbox group and a fixed 4K television; choose Switch 2 if handheld play matters more than graphics settings.”
Quick recommendation framework
| Priorities | Most likely fit | Conditions to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable settings, high-refresh or ultrawide display, upgrades, and supported mods | PC | Hardware meets the game’s requirements; the desired features are supported and stable on the current build |
| Fixed hardware, couch play, quick setup, and an established PlayStation group | PS5 | Developer’s quality/performance modes, PS5 entitlement, and friends’ cross-play eligibility |
| Fixed hardware, couch play, and an established Xbox group | Xbox Series X|S | Series X versus Series S modes, Smart Delivery or entitlement rules, and online requirements |
| Handheld or tabletop play, Nintendo-specific content, or Switch 2 accessibility options | Switch 2 | Native or enhanced build, handheld/docked behavior, storage, battery, and cross-play limitations |
Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a console specification as a benchmark
“10 TFLOPS,” “4K at 60 FPS,” or “up to 120 FPS” describes platform capability or a target. It does not establish a game’s internal resolution, image reconstruction, frame-time consistency, or ray-tracing mode. Use the developer’s mode list and same-version testing.
Assuming cross-play means cross-progression
A player can sometimes join a friend without carrying levels, purchases, or saves to another system. Verify each progression category and the account-linking requirement independently.
Comparing generations as if they were one platform
PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Switch and Switch 2 can have different performance, content, patches, and entitlement rules. Put every generation in its own row.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring regional and recurring costs
A sale price is temporary, a subscription is recurring, and storage or hardware upgrades may be one-time costs. Label each amount by region, date, edition, and whether it recurs.
Treating a port as feature-identical
Check modes, DLC, online functions, accessibility, save transfer, and patch history on the actual build. Never infer parity from screenshots or from another platform’s listing.
Bottom line
Compare eligibility before fidelity: the publisher’s cross-play and progression rules determine which versions are viable for a multiplayer group. Then compare the game’s measured modes, controls, accessibility, content, portability, and complete regional cost. PC is the flexible choice for suitable hardware and adjustable settings; PS5 and Xbox are straightforward fixed-hardware options when your friends and ecosystem are there; Switch 2 is compelling when portability, tabletop play, Nintendo content, or its accessibility tools outweigh maximum graphics control. The correct purchase is the edition that satisfies the reader’s non-negotiables with the fewest ongoing compromises.
