To get more useful results from AI, say what you want it to do, give it the context and materials it needs, specify the audience and output, then review and refine its response. Clear communication helps guide a model; it does not guarantee that the answer will be correct.

What makes an AI request useful?

A useful request makes the goal clear enough that the model can tell what work to do and what a successful result should look like. “Make this better” leaves the goal open to interpretation. “Shorten this email and make the next step explicit” identifies two concrete changes.

OpenAI defines prompt engineering as designing and optimizing input prompts to guide a language model’s responses. Its ChatGPT prompting guidance recommends clear, specific prompts with enough context. In practice, treat prompting as communication and revision—not a search for magic words.

How to write a clear prompt

  1. Name the task and outcome

Use a direct verb such as draft, summarize, compare, explain, or revise. State what the result should help someone do: for example, “Summarize these meeting notes so the team can see the decisions and owners.”

  2. Supply relevant context and materials

Include the information that could change the answer: who it is for, its purpose, relevant facts, source text, and any constraints. For a response based on supplied material, say so explicitly, such as “Use only the notes below; do not add outside facts.” Provide the material the model needs rather than assuming it already knows your situation.

  3. Describe the audience and answer format

Specify who will read or use the result and what shape it should take. Depending on the task, that might mean an email, a one-page update, an FAQ, or slide copy. Add useful constraints such as length, tone, reading level, or required sections. These details are especially helpful when different formats would produce materially different answers.

  4. Break complex work into stages

For a large assignment, separate the work into focused steps: first identify key points, then organize them, then draft, then edit. You can also provide a short example when the model needs to follow a particular pattern or style. OpenAI’s developer guide and Anthropic’s Claude prompting guide both discuss techniques for shaping model responses; details can vary by provider and model.

  5. Review the answer and give targeted feedback

Check whether the response meets your goal, follows the constraints, and accurately handles the supplied facts. Then ask for a specific change: “Keep the risk section, shorten the opening, and name the owner for the next step.” This tells the model what to preserve and what to revise, rather than restarting without direction.

A reusable prompt pattern

Adapt this pattern to the task; omit any part that is not relevant:

Help me [task]. This is for [audience and purpose]. Use this context: [relevant facts or material]. Return [format and length]. Keep [tone or style] and respect these constraints: [requirements]. If important information is missing, ask me before assuming.

For a longer assignment, ask for one stage at a time and review each result before moving on. The pattern is a practical way to organize a request, not a guarantee of a better answer across every model or task.

Example: turn a vague request into a useful one

Vague: “Write an update about the project.”

More specific: “Draft a concise email to the project sponsor using the notes below. Include completed work, the main risk, and the decision needed this week. Keep it under 200 words, use a neutral tone, and end with the requested next step.”

After reviewing the draft, you could follow up with: “Keep the risk section, shorten the opening, and name the owner for the next step.” Each instruction addresses a specific part of the result.

Why clear prompts still need fact-checking

Even a carefully written request does not make generated content dependable by itself. OpenAI’s developer documentation notes that model output is non-deterministic and that prompting techniques can work differently across model types and snapshots. Anthropic’s guide likewise includes model-specific advice alongside general techniques. Treat prompt tips as guidance to adapt, not universal rules.

Review important claims before relying on them, particularly numbers, policies, and other details where an error could matter. Check those claims against an appropriate source or the materials you supplied. You remain responsible for deciding whether the output is accurate and fit for use.
