Commission a VTuber model as a written production project, not an informal art purchase. Before any deposit, agree on the model type, body coverage, art and rigging scope, expressions, physics, outfits, target software, schedule, payment gates, revision limits, ownership and license terms, and the exact files you will receive. Use approval checkpoints from sketch through a tested runtime export, and release the final payment only after the folder works in your intended software.
Decide what you are commissioning
A quote is meaningful only when both sides describe the same deliverable. “A VTuber model” can mean a character illustration, a separated art file ready for rigging, a fully rigged Live2D model, a 3D avatar, or a package that also includes expressions, outfit toggles and setup support. Write down the package before comparing artists.

Choose the model format
- Live2D: A two-dimensional model built from layered artwork and rigged for face, head and body movement. Confirm whether the artist is creating the artwork, the rig, or both.
- 3D: A three-dimensional avatar with a different production pipeline, file set and tracking target. Ask which runtime software and export format are supported.
- Art-only: You receive a character design or layered illustration, but a separate rigger must turn it into a tracking model. Your contract should permit that handoff if you plan to hire another specialist.
- Art and rigging: One provider handles the character artwork and the Live2D setup. This can simplify accountability, but the contract still needs separate approval gates for art and rigging.
Specify coverage and features
State whether the model is bust, half body, waist up, or full body. List every required expression, mouth or eye variation, hand gesture, outfit, hairstyle, prop and toggle. Identify physics for hair, clothing and accessories, plus any animations or special effects. The contract-template guidance from VTuberModelCommissions.com specifically calls for the model type, body coverage, rigging level, expression count, physics, outfit variations and file formats.
Also name the tracking target. If you intend to use VTube Studio, say so before work begins and identify the camera or face-tracking behavior you expect. A model optimized for one runtime may need different parameter mapping or export settings for another.

Prepare a commission brief before contacting artists
A concise brief prevents expensive interpretation disputes. Attach a reference sheet or character turnaround when available, and separate requirements from preferences so the artist knows which details cannot change.
Include these brief sections
- Character: Colors, markings, age presentation, proportions, hairstyle, materials, accessories and any non-negotiable design features.
- Framing: Bust, half body or full body; neutral pose; hand visibility; and whether the model must support a particular camera crop.
- Expressions and toggles: List each named expression, outfit, hairstyle, prop, animation and hotkey behavior.
- Tracking goals: Head angles, eye and mouth movement, hair and clothing physics, body turns, breathing and any special parameter behavior.
- Runtime: VTube Studio or another named application, plus the operating system and any version requirement that matters to your setup.
- Use and rights: Monetized streams, sponsorships, merchandise, advertisements, fan works, edits by another rigger and possible resale or transfer.
- Schedule: Desired start, debut or launch date, blackout dates and how quickly you can review drafts.
- Budget: A total ceiling or a request for a line-item quote separating art, rigging, extras, source files and rush work.
Ask for comparable examples
Request samples that match your intended scope, not merely a gallery of unrelated illustrations. Look for separated-art quality, clean deformations, convincing head angles, stable eye and mouth tracking, natural physics and useful toggles. Ask whether each sample was made by the person quoting your project and whether the shown features are included in the quoted package.
Ask about the current queue, estimated start date, checkpoint dates, communication channel, payment processor, cancellation policy, revision rules and whether source files are included. A short written answer is more useful than a broad statement that the artist is “flexible.”
Put the production agreement in writing
The agreement can be a contract, order form or signed statement of work, but it should identify the parties and describe the work precisely. Keep the artist’s quote, your brief, reference images and later change orders with the signed document so the approved scope is traceable.

Do not rely on a portfolio page or chat message to fill an omitted term. If a feature, file or right is important, write it into the agreement or mark it as excluded.
Use approval gates and milestone payments
A staged workflow lets you catch an incorrect silhouette before detailed rigging makes it costly to change. A practical sequence is concept or sketch, separated art and base colors, final art, rigging passes, tracking test and final export.

Delivery means the artist sent files; acceptance means those files meet the written specification. Set an acceptance period, such as a stated number of business days, during which you will report reproducible defects. Identify what happens if the artist does not respond, and do not let silence accidentally approve a model unless that rule is explicit.

Control revisions and change requests
Require one consolidated feedback message at each checkpoint. Number comments or annotate the relevant image so the artist can confirm which items were fixed. Keep approved stages locked unless both sides agree to reopen them.
What normally belongs in an included revision
- A correction that brings the work back to the approved brief.
- A color, proportion or layer-separation adjustment identified during the scheduled review.
- A rigging fix where a named parameter does not behave as specified.
- A minor alignment, clipping or naming correction found during acceptance.
What should trigger a written change order
- A new outfit, hairstyle, prop, pose or expression not in the brief.
- A major redesign after concept approval.
- Reopening an approved art stage because the direction changed.
- Adding a new animation, body turn, physics system or runtime target.
- Feedback delivered after the agreed deadline that requires rework or schedule changes.
The change order should state the added fee, schedule impact, revised deliverables and new approval date. One typeou.dev policy says minor revisions are free while major revisions may incur fees depending on complexity; other artist terms allow fee-based major changes. Neither wording creates a universal industry rule, so your contract must supply the actual number of rounds and rates.
Include a short post-delivery correction window for defects in the delivered build. A DailyBirba order form, for example, allows requests for revisions to a finished commission within two weeks of delivery. That is an example of a stated policy, not a general entitlement; write your own deadline and define whether it covers only errors or also creative changes.

Specify the delivery folder and every file
Ask for a file inventory before acceptance. Digital delivery is standard: an artist may use a secure download link, email, cloud drive or ZIP archive. A DailyBirba order form states that commission deliverables are digital and that no physical material is shipped. Download the archive promptly, verify it, and keep an independent backup.

Do not infer that editable sources are included because you received a compiled model. Terms from studios and order forms commonly distinguish runtime files from PSD, CLIP, CMO3 or CAN3 sources. If you want source files, list each one and the additional fee, if any, before paying.

- Preserve the original: Download the delivery archive, record its checksum or archive name, and make two backups in separate locations. Work from a copy.
- Read the instructions: Check the readme for the intended software, folder structure, hotkeys, credits and known limitations.
- Install in a clean location: Put the model folder where the target runtime expects it without renaming referenced files.
- Load the model: Open it in VTube Studio or the other agreed application. Confirm that the model3.json, MOC3, textures and physics files resolve without missing-file errors.
- Exercise tracking: Move through neutral, left and right head angles, up and down tilt, eye directions, blinks, mouth shapes and body movement. Watch for clipping, jumps, inverted parameters or collapsed meshes.
- Test physics: Move deliberately and then stop. Hair, clothing and accessories should settle without runaway oscillation or visible intersections beyond the agreed tolerance.
- Trigger every feature: Use each expression, outfit, hairstyle, prop, animation and hotkey listed in the contract. Record a screen capture and a defect list.
- Check repeatability: Close and reopen the runtime, test the model at the intended camera resolution and verify that settings persist.
- Send one acceptance report: Identify the file, parameter or hotkey, describe the expected and observed behavior, and attach a short reproduction clip.
- Accept and archive: After corrections, save the final folder, readme, license and signed acceptance record together. Release the final payment only at the agreed acceptance trigger.
Clarify ownership and commercial use
Separate the rights involved instead of asking only, “Do I own the model?” A single commission can contain a character concept, illustration copyright, rigging work, editable source files and a runtime export, each governed by different terms.
Questions the rights clause should answer
- Who owns the underlying character design and artwork copyright?
- Do you receive an exclusive assignment, a broad license, or a personal-use license?
- Are monetized streams, advertisements, sponsorships and platform subscriptions allowed?
- May you sell merchandise, use the model in promotional material or license it to a production partner?
- May another artist edit, re-rig, optimize or convert the files?
- Can you transfer or resell the model, and what happens to the license if you stop using it?
- Are source files yours to retain, or merely delivered for limited use?
- May the artist display the work in a portfolio, post work-in-progress images or reveal it before debut?
- Must you provide a credit, where must it appear, and can the artist reuse generic assets?
Some artists retain copyright while granting commercial streaming rights; others offer broader assignments for a different fee. The contract should name the permitted uses in plain language and identify any geographic, time or platform limits. Keep the signed rights statement with the delivery archive so a future editor, sponsor or platform partner can verify your permission.

Plan for delays, cancellation and failed handoffs
If the schedule slips
Use the checkpoint dates to identify the missed stage, ask for a revised date in writing and pause the next payment until the agreed gate is complete. Do not silently expand the scope while expecting the original deadline. If the delay affects a debut, invoke the contract’s rescheduling or cancellation clause rather than relying on informal promises.
If the artist stops responding
Send the contractually required notice through the stated channel. Request the current work, a status report and a proposed recovery date. If the agreement addresses abandonment, follow its refund and file-release process. Avoid commissioning a replacement artist before confirming what files and rights you are entitled to receive.
If the delivered folder does not work
Compare the folder with the inventory, restore the original archive, and send a reproducible defect list during the support or correction window. Ask for missing JSON references, textures, configuration files or source files by name. If the problem is a new feature request rather than a defect, obtain a change-order quote instead of describing it as a bug.
Compare quotes on risk, not just price
There is no representative industry-wide price or revision average established by the available examples. Individual artist policies, such as a two-week correction window or a particular rigging estimate, should not be treated as market statistics. Compare proposals using the same scope and these decision points:

Ask each candidate to price the same base package and list extras separately. A lower quote that omits source files, physics, expressions, revisions or commercial rights is not equivalent to a higher quote that includes them.
