Close Paytm only after your balance is zero or transferred, your replacement UPI account is receiving payments, every bill and AutoPay mandate has been rebuilt, and any Paytm Payments Bank FASTag or NCMC product has been replaced. Paytm’s closure process invalidates the old login, so save statements, receipts and mandate details first.
Make a migration inventory before closing
Use the Paytm app while you can still sign in. Create a list of every service that depends on the account or its linked bank details. Download statements where available and take screenshots of items that may be difficult to retrieve later.

Keep copies in a secure location. Paytm says closing the account unlinks the phone number and makes the associated login ID and password invalid, so relying on the old sign-in to prove a later dispute is risky.
Move the Paytm wallet balance
First, bring the balance to zero
Paytm’s account-closure guidance says you should not have a balance when you request closure. Use the balance for permitted transactions, transfer it to another registered Paytm number, or transfer it to a bank account. The available transfer route and limits depend on the wallet’s KYC status and applicable regulations.

Full-KYC wallet
The Reserve Bank of India’s FAQ says a full-KYC wallet can be closed through Paytm Payments Bank or its banking app, with the balance transferred to an account maintained with another bank. Enter the destination bank details exactly as held by that bank and retain the transfer confirmation. A transfer may require account verification or other KYC checks; a failed transfer should be resolved with Paytm Payments Bank before you submit account closure.
Minimum-KYC wallet
RBI guidance says a minimum-KYC wallet can be used or a refund can be requested. Do not assume that a minimum-KYC wallet can be transferred in the same way as a full-KYC wallet. Submit the refund request through the currently available Paytm support route and save the request number, expected amount and any identity information requested.
Balances affected by the RBI restrictions
After the RBI restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank, Paytm support said the original wallet could not be topped up for new transactions. Eligible existing balances could still be used or withdrawn, and permitted refunds or cashback could still be credited. The RBI deadline for new deposits or top-ups to Paytm Payments Bank customer accounts, wallets, FASTags and NCMC instruments was March 15, 2024, subject to permitted refunds and cashback. Therefore, do not add money to test a transfer; work only with the balance and credits that are actually available.
Check for delayed credits
Before closure, review orders, merchant cancellations and card or UPI reversals that could produce a later wallet credit. Contact the merchant if a refund is pending and ask where it will be sent. If the refund is expected in the Paytm wallet, wait for it or obtain written confirmation of an alternative destination before closing the account.
Replace a Paytm Payments Bank FASTag or NCMC card
RBI and Paytm told FASTag and NCMC users to make alternative arrangements before March 15, 2024. A Paytm Payments Bank FASTag should therefore be treated as a separate migration, not as something that will automatically follow your new UPI account.

- Buy and activate a replacement FASTag from another issuer for the same vehicle, following that issuer’s KYC and vehicle-registration process.
- Remove the old tag from the windscreen only after the replacement is active and readable at a toll lane.
- Record the old tag number, remaining balance, unsettled tolls and any linked vehicle details.
- Use Paytm Payments Bank’s current support process to ask about transferring or refunding eligible remaining value. The available process can depend on the product status, so do not promise yourself an automatic refund.
- For an NCMC card, spend or recover the remaining value through the issuer’s current instructions before closing the account.
Do not assume the old FASTag will continue to accept top-ups. Keep the replacement activation confirmation and at least one successful toll transaction before you close Paytm.
Move UPI payments to a new bank or app
Link the destination bank account
Install or open the destination bank’s UPI app, or another UPI app you have chosen, and link the bank account using the mobile number registered with that bank. Paytm says that linking a bank account automatically creates a UPI ID. The app may send an SMS from the registered SIM to verify ownership, so keep that SIM active and able to send messages.

Confirm that the money reaches the intended bank account and that the displayed account name is correct. Only after this test should you change salary instructions, marketplace refunds or recurring merchant payments.
Notify people and merchants that pay you
Give the new UPI ID to employers, clients, family members, regular senders, online marketplaces and merchants that issue refunds. Update saved payment details in shopping, food-delivery, travel and other accounts. A sender who continues using the old UPI ID may receive a failure rather than an automatic redirect.
Unlink Paytm bank accounts
In Paytm, open UPI & Payment Settings, select each linked bank account and remove it. Paytm says that unlinking a bank account deactivates the UPI ID associated with it. If more than one bank is linked, repeat the action for every account you intend to remove. Capture the confirmation screen and check that no old account remains listed.

Unlinking does not move your transaction history or recurring mandates to the new app. It only disables the associated Paytm UPI ID, which is why the replacement account and notifications must be ready first.

Rebuild bills and UPI AutoPay mandates
Regular bill payments
For electricity, gas, water, mobile, broadband, insurance, loans and other bills, add the biller in the replacement UPI or banking app using the exact consumer number. Compare the biller name and service address before saving. Make a manual payment where possible and keep the receipt with the billing period and transaction ID.
Some billers are paid through a saved account on their own website rather than through Paytm’s biller list. Sign in to each merchant, replace the payment method there and remove the old Paytm method only after the new one has been accepted. A successful one-time bill payment does not prove that a recurring instruction has been replaced.
Find every existing mandate
In Paytm, open the UPI AutoPay or Automatic Payments area and list active, paused and pending mandates. For each one, record the merchant, maximum amount, debit frequency, next scheduled date and mandate reference. Include subscriptions that debit only occasionally; an annual renewal can fail months after you think the migration is complete.
Create the replacement mandate
- Open the merchant’s account or subscription settings.
- Choose the new bank account or UPI ID as the payment method.
- Approve a new UPI AutoPay mandate and verify its amount cap, frequency and validity period.
- Check that the merchant shows the new mandate as active and that your bank or UPI app displays the authorization.
- Wait for the first successful debit, or obtain an equivalent confirmation from the merchant if the schedule is distant.
- Return to Paytm’s Automatic Payments area and cancel the old mandate.
Paytm’s migration guidance says mandates remain tied to the old bank account and UPI ID; they do not migrate automatically. Its FAQ says cancelling a mandate stops future automatic payments, but cancellation does not reverse a debit that has already been initiated. Prioritize loan EMIs, insurance premiums, utilities and mobile or broadband services because a failed debit can trigger a late fee, lapse cover or interruption.

Verify cancellation
Save the old mandate’s cancellation confirmation and check the merchant’s page as well as the Paytm list. If a mandate remains pending, contact the merchant and Paytm support rather than assuming it is gone. Keep enough money in the new account for the first replacement debit.

After the wallet, UPI, bills, mandates and FASTag work is complete, use this Paytm support path:
- Log in with the old phone number.
- Tap the ☰ menu.
- Open 24×7 Help.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Choose I need to close/delete my account.
- Select I don’t use this Paytm account.
- Tap Message us and submit the closure request.
Paytm says its team verifies the request and then closes the account. Include a reachable contact number, explain that balances and linked services have been handled, and save the support conversation or reference number. Do not log out until you have captured the confirmation.
If your phone is lost or compromised
If you cannot safely sign in, use Paytm Payments Bank’s temporary-blocking and account-closure instructions at https://www.paytm.bank.in/close-account. Blocking access is an emergency containment step; follow the support team’s instructions for permanent closure after ownership is verified.

Once Paytm closes the account, the phone-number link is removed and the associated login ID and password are no longer valid. You will not be able to treat the old account as a live payment identity or expect its UPI ID to receive new payments.
Closure does not necessarily delete historical regulatory records. Paytm states that transaction logs may be retained for up to 10 years under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and prepaid-payment-instrument requirements. Keep your own statements, receipts, refund correspondence, mandate cancellations and replacement FASTag evidence for as long as you may need them for tax, warranty, dispute or compliance purposes.
Closing Paytm also does not cancel an external merchant subscription, loan instruction or insurance policy. Those relationships must be updated or cancelled with the merchant, lender or insurer.
Checks to perform after requesting closure
- Confirm the wallet balance is zero or that the transfer or refund has a recorded status.
- Check the destination bank account for the test UPI payment and any wallet transfer.
- Ask a trusted sender to use the new UPI ID and verify receipt.
- Open each biller’s page and confirm the replacement payment method and next due date.
- Verify that every new AutoPay mandate is active and every old mandate is cancelled.
- Test the replacement FASTag at a toll point before discarding the old tag.
- Store the closure reference, support messages, statements and screenshots in encrypted storage.
Common failure points and fixes
The wallet transfer is rejected
Check whether the wallet is full-KYC or minimum-KYC, whether the destination account name and number match, and whether a refund rather than a transfer is required. Stop trying random top-ups after the RBI restrictions; contact Paytm Payments Bank support with the wallet identifier and transaction evidence.

The new UPI ID cannot receive money
Confirm that the destination app is using the mobile number registered with the bank, that the correct SIM is active, and that the bank account appears as linked. Recheck the displayed UPI ID character by character and repeat a small test payment.
An AutoPay debit still points to Paytm
Look in both the merchant’s subscription settings and Paytm’s Automatic Payments list. Create the replacement mandate first, wait for a successful debit, then cancel the old one. For a debit already in processing, contact the merchant before cancelling anything else.
Closure cannot be completed
Resolve any outstanding balance, pending refund or verification request shown by support. If the phone is unavailable, use the temporary-blocking route at https://www.paytm.bank.in/close-account and provide the information needed to verify ownership.
How to choose a replacement bank or UPI app
The right destination depends on the payments you actually run, not just on the app interface. Compare these capabilities before moving everything:

| KYC and transfers | What verification is required for wallet-like balances, bank transfers and refunds? |
| Records | Can you export statements and retrieve transaction IDs when disputing a payment? |
| Escalation | Is there a documented support path and a reference number for unresolved payment failures? |
Move one category at a time and test it before closing the old account. That sequence limits the chance that a failed UPI link, bill mandate or refund leaves you without a working payment route.
