What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can replace a Windows drive without reinstalling Windows by cloning the entire source disk to a compatible SSD, then starting the computer from that SSD. Before you begin, confirm the SSD fits and works with your PC, make and validate a backup, and check the cloning tool’s support limits. Cloning can erase everything already on the destination drive.
What cloning does—and what it does not do
A disk clone copies the source drive’s partitions, including the Windows and boot partitions needed to start the PC. Depending on the tool and configuration, it can carry over Windows, installed applications, and personal files. It is different from copying the visible contents of the C: drive, which does not by itself reproduce the complete bootable disk.

Cloning replaces the contents of the destination SSD, so treat it as a full-disk operation rather than a file transfer.
Check that the SSD will work in your PC
Look up your computer’s model and consult its manufacturer’s manual before choosing a drive. Confirm the supported interface—SATA or NVMe—physical form factor, and capacity. There is no universally compatible SSD for every computer.

- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
If your PC has only one internal drive bay, connect the new SSD temporarily with an adapter or enclosure that matches its interface. M.2/NVMe and mSATA drives may need a compatible adapter to connect during the clone. The target must have enough capacity for the data and partitions being transferred; check the cloning program’s requirements, especially if the new SSD is smaller than the old disk.
Prepare the source disk and choose a cloning tool
- Back up the entire source disk. Save the backup somewhere other than either drive being cloned, then verify that it can be accessed or restored. Acronis says to create a complete backup of the original disk as a safety precaution in its True Image 2026 disk-cloning guidance.
- Check the source drive for errors. Resolve disk problems before cloning; a failing or damaged source may prevent a reliable transfer. Close open applications to reduce the chance that files are changing during the operation.
- Check exact software compatibility. A drive maker’s migration app may only support particular target models, Windows releases, and source-drive configurations. A third-party utility can have different limits. Review the current documentation for your exact source, target, encryption, partition layout, and boot mode before starting.
- Connect the SSD and confirm both drives appear. Use the matching adapter or enclosure if the target is not yet installed internally. Identify the source and destination by model and capacity, not just by their drive letters.
For example, Samsung Data Migration is limited to listed Samsung target SSDs and its manual specifies Windows 7 SP1 through Windows 10; that older compatibility list does not establish support for newer Windows versions. The manual also says its utility cannot clone an encrypted source drive. Check the current Samsung instructions for your SSD and Windows configuration at Samsung Data Migration User Manual.

Clone the whole disk to the SSD
- Open the cloning utility and select the full source disk. Include the Windows, boot, and other system partitions, not just the C: partition. Make sure you have selected the drive Windows currently starts from.
- Select the new SSD as the destination. Check its model and capacity again. Read the warning about deleting existing partitions: cloning typically overwrites the destination’s current contents.
- Review the proposed partition layout. Check that required system partitions are included and that the destination layout fits the SSD. In Acronis’s cloning wizard, automatic mode is recommended for most cases; manual mode allows partition layout changes. Review the vendor’s disk-cloning instructions if you are using that utility.
- Start the clone and let it finish. Do not disconnect either drive, shut down the PC, or interrupt the process. Completion behavior varies by utility: Samsung’s guide says its software shuts down the computer when cloning finishes.
Install the SSD and boot Windows from it
- Shut down the computer and install the cloned SSD internally, following the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions. If the target was connected externally for cloning, disconnect it as needed and install it in the internal drive slot.
- Start the PC and check whether Windows loads. If it does not, open the BIOS or UEFI setup using the key specified by the computer or motherboard manual, then put the new SSD first in boot priority.
- Check that the boot mode and controller settings are appropriate for the original installation. If you used bootable cloning media, Acronis says it should use the same BIOS or UEFI mode as the source system.
- Once Windows starts from the SSD, confirm your files and applications are present before erasing, repurposing, or removing the original drive. Keeping the original unchanged until you have verified the new installation gives you a fallback if something is missing.
If the cloned SSD does not boot
- The PC keeps starting from the old drive: If both drives are connected, check BIOS/UEFI boot priority and select the SSD. Confirm that Windows actually started from the new drive before changing or wiping the old one.
- The SSD is not listed as a boot option: Confirm that it is installed and connected correctly, then check the PC’s drive and boot settings in its manual. Verify that the clone includes the system and boot partitions.
- The cloning tool will not proceed: Recheck that you chose the correct destination and that the software supports the target model, source layout, encryption status, and Windows configuration. Software-specific restrictions can include encrypted sources, certain multiboot or RAID setups, unsupported dynamic disks, or a mismatch in logical sector sizes. Acronis documents dynamic-disk and logical-sector limitations in its cloning guidance; other utilities may have different rules.
- The source disk has errors or is damaged: Stop rather than repeatedly attempting a clone that may fail or copy corrupted data. Preserve the backup and consider professional recovery if the files are important.
- You are moving the clone to a different computer: A drive cloned for one PC may not boot on different hardware without the required drivers and additional recovery steps. This procedure is intended for replacing a drive in the same computer.
When a simple clone may not be suitable
Check the utility’s documentation before proceeding if the source is encrypted, damaged, part of a multiboot or RAID configuration, or uses dynamic disks. For example, Samsung’s cited manual excludes encrypted sources and lists limitations for damaged sources, some multiboot configurations, and unsupported RAID setups. Acronis documents additional conditions, including matching logical-sector sizes and unsupported dynamic disks in its cloning wizard. These are tool-specific restrictions, not a single universal rule for every cloning program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a Windows installation on an external USB drive, do not assume that cloning it to another external drive will produce a bootable setup; Acronis recommends cloning to an internal drive and says the old and new drives should use the same controller mode. Consult your chosen utility’s current instructions if your configuration differs from a standard internal-drive replacement.
