These are not competing browser types. A safer agent deployment combines browser isolation with restricted access, careful handling of untrusted content, confirmation for consequential actions, and oversight.
What a browser sandbox protects against
A browser sandbox limits what a compromised renderer—the process that displays a page—can access on the device. Chromium describes Site Isolation as an additional layer: pages from different sites are placed in separate renderer processes, each running in a sandbox. This separation helps protect one site’s data from another site, including in some cases where an attacker exploits a renderer vulnerability. These controls concern the browser’s processes and their access to local resources and other sites. They do not determine how an AI model interprets text it reads or whether it will click a button, submit a form, or otherwise follow instructions found on a page.
Why an AI agent adds a different risk
An agent can encounter malicious instructions in ordinary page content, embedded documents, advertisements, dynamically loaded scripts, tool descriptions, or responses from third-party services. A page does not need to look suspicious for its content to be untrusted. If an agent treats that content as instructions, its available permissions determine what it can do next.

Browser agents may navigate, click, fill forms, and download files. In an authenticated session, an unintended action could affect an account or expose information available to that session. Chrome’s agent security guidance describes these instruction and action risks; Anthropic discusses similar risks in its browser-use prompt-injection guidance.
Can a prompt injection escape a browser sandbox? A prompt injection does not have to escape the renderer sandbox to influence an agent. The sandbox limits a compromised browser process; it is not a rule that tells the model to reject malicious page text. Whether the agent can then cause harm depends on its tools, permissions, access to data, and safeguards.

Compare the deployment, not the labels

What changes when an agent uses your logged-in browser?
Using an existing session can save you from signing in again, but it also gives the agent access to more of your browser’s active state. Chrome’s documentation for DevTools auto-connect says the agent inherits the active browser’s tabs, extensions, and live application state and can access profile data such as cookies and browser storage. That may be useful for an authenticated dashboard; it also raises the stakes of an agent mistake or a successful prompt injection. See Chrome’s auto-connect documentation.

Which safeguards make an agent deployment safer?
Chrome’s guidance recommends layered controls rather than relying on the model alone. These controls reduce risk; they do not guarantee that an agent will resist every malicious instruction.
- Limit access: Restrict which origins the agent can interact with and minimize the data and browser state it receives.
- Constrain actions: Keep permissions aligned with the task, and require user confirmation when an action could have significant consequences.
- Handle external content as untrusted: Apply safeguards to page content, tool descriptions, and tool outputs. Screening context and outputs, and checking whether a proposed tool call matches the user’s intent, are among the controls Chrome discusses.
- Review activity: Monitor what the agent reads and does, and test relevant prompt-injection and data-exfiltration scenarios in the environment where it will run.
Chrome’s June 9, 2026 guidance notes that model safety layers cannot guarantee safety inside the model itself because language-model behavior is probabilistic. Its agent security guidance describes additional measures such as input-volume limits, classifiers, and routine evaluation as parts of a defense-in-depth approach.

What published evaluations do—and do not—show
Vendor evaluations show that safeguards can reduce measured prompt-injection susceptibility, but their percentages are tied to specific models, attack sets, and mitigation configurations. They are not directly comparable rankings and should not be treated as a prediction for another person’s agent.
- Anthropic: In a November 24, 2025 post, Anthropic reported a 1% attack success rate for the cited Claude Opus 4.5 browser-use evaluation against its internal adaptive “Best-of-N” attacker. Anthropic said that this still represented meaningful risk and that no browser agent is immune. Read Anthropic’s evaluation and qualifications.
- OpenAI: The Operator System Card reports 23% susceptibility with the final model, compared with 62% with no mitigations and 47% with prompting alone, for the scenarios described in that card. It also reports 99% recall and 90% precision for its prompt-injection monitor on a set of 77 red-team attempts. These are results for OpenAI’s named system and evaluation, not a general rate for browser agents. Read the Operator System Card.
The measures and test designs differ, so comparing the headline percentages as if they came from one shared benchmark would be misleading. A low measured attack rate is evidence about a tested configuration, not proof of immunity.

What to do for ordinary browsing and agent use
For ordinary browsing
Keep your browser updated and use its built-in sandboxing and site-isolation protections. These help contain browser-process compromises; they are not controls on how a separate AI agent follows page instructions.
When using an agent
- Use a separate or restricted browser profile when the task does not require your personal signed-in session.
- Limit the agent to the sites, data, and actions needed for the task.
- Require confirmation before consequential actions, such as submitting a sensitive form or changing account settings.
- Review its activity, particularly when it has access to authenticated pages or can make changes.
If you build or deploy an agent
Evaluate prompt-injection and data-exfiltration scenarios in the actual deployment context. Test how input screening, output checks, tool-call review, and permission limits work together; a safeguard’s performance in one test set does not establish how it will perform with a different model, browser, or workflow. Chrome’s guidance and the Operator System Card provide examples of the kinds of controls and evaluations to consider.
