Yes. Samsung Data Migration clones an operating-system drive to a supported Samsung SSD, transferring Windows, applications, and user data. It is not a general-purpose backup tool: the target drive is erased, and the utility requires an OS-installed source and an eligible Samsung SSD. Samsung now integrates Data Migration into Samsung Magician; check Samsung’s current compatibility information before starting.
What Samsung Data Migration copies—and what it does not
The utility is intended to migrate an existing Windows installation and its data to a supported Samsung SSD. Samsung’s manual says it cannot clone a source drive that has no operating system installed, and it supports only target models listed in the applicable requirements—not every Samsung-branded or OEM drive.

In the configuration described in Samsung’s manual and Magician 8.3.0 installation guide, it copies the Windows C: volume and up to two additional volumes; the System Reserved partition is copied automatically. Computer-maker recovery partitions generally are not copied, with exceptions for certain Samsung Recovery Solution configurations. Page and hibernation files may be omitted, so the amount of data transferred can differ from the source drive’s used space by several gigabytes.

Check compatibility before you connect the drives
Confirm the exact Samsung SSD model
Check the target model against Samsung’s current software and tools page and applicable documentation. Samsung’s older manual lists models including the 870 EVO and 980 series, but a model appearing in an older manual does not establish current eligibility for every software version or market. Samsung’s download page displayed Magician 9.0.1 for Windows and macOS when checked on October 7, 2026, and recommends using the latest version. The older manual’s Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10 list should not be treated as a guarantee of present-day operating-system support.
Match the drive, connection, and capacity
- Choose a supported SSD whose interface and form factor fit your computer and intended installation.
- Make sure the target has enough capacity for the data being migrated.
- If you must connect the target externally, use an adapter or enclosure that matches the SSD’s interface, such as SATA-to-USB for a SATA drive or an appropriate M.2 PCIe-to-USB enclosure. Samsung warns that some portable USB adapters can prevent the feature from working properly, so an external connection is not guaranteed to work.
Resolve known source-drive or setup issues
- Remove encryption protection and any password before cloning; encrypted source drives cannot be cloned until protection is removed.
- Multiple operating-system installations, dynamic disks, damaged drives or bad sectors, outdated chipset drivers, and some instant-recovery software can cause migration problems or an unusable clone.
- Samsung’s Magician 8.3.0 guide says the feature supports NTFS and FAT file systems and notes additional conditions for portable SSD use. These are version-specific details; consult the documentation for the version you install.
How to clone your drive with Samsung Data Migration
- Identify both drives. Note the source drive containing Windows and the exact Samsung SSD model you intend to use as the target. Verify the target’s capacity and connection type.
- Back up important files. Save a separate copy of important source data, and copy anything you need from the target elsewhere. Samsung warns that migration erases all data on the target and that the tool cannot recover it.
- Connect the target SSD. Install it internally or connect it through a compatible adapter or enclosure. If it is not detected, check the connection and adapter compatibility before proceeding.
- Open Samsung Magician. Samsung’s current software page identifies Magician as the integration point for Data Migration. Download the current version from Samsung’s official tools page, install it, and open the Data Migration feature.
- Refresh and inspect the drive list. Refresh detected drives if needed. Select the intended target and verify the source and target identities and capacities carefully. Do not start if the selected target is the wrong drive.
- Start migration and wait for completion. Follow the on-screen workflow. Do not disconnect either drive or interrupt the process while it is running.
- Boot from the migrated SSD and verify it. Shut down, then use the computer manufacturer’s instructions to select the new drive as the boot device if necessary. Firmware and installation arrangements differ, so there is no single universal BIOS/UEFI procedure. Check that Windows starts and that your files and applications are present before removing, wiping, or reusing the original drive.
What to do if the migration fails or the clone will not boot
If the target is not detected
Check that the SSD is connected securely, refresh the drive list, and confirm that the adapter matches the drive’s interface. Because Samsung says some portable USB adapters can cause problems, try a compatible internal connection or another suitable adapter if available.

If migration stops or reports an error
Check for encryption, multiple operating systems, dynamic disks, source-drive errors, outdated chipset drivers, and instant-recovery software. Samsung identifies these as possible compatibility or failure factors. Do not assume a failed attempt left the target’s previous contents intact: the target is subject to erasure during migration. Samsung’s manual says a failed clone does not affect the source data, but maintain your independent backup.

If a large drive has unallocated space
Samsung’s older manual warns that cloning an older operating system without GPT to a drive larger than 2 TB may leave space beyond 2 TB unallocated when the disk uses MBR. Treat this as a documented limitation for that setup, not as a universal behavior of current systems.

If the computer starts from the old drive instead
Check the boot-device selection using the computer maker’s instructions and confirm the new SSD is detected. Do not erase or repurpose the source until you have successfully booted from the migrated SSD and verified your data.
